Poll: Ovechkin's Creativity (Updated)

Alex Ovechkin's reputation as the NHL's most colorful personality was affirmed in the Breakway Challenge tonight.

After missing his first three attempts, the Caps' winger returned to the bench, and with the help of his friend-turned-enemy-turned-friend again Evgeni Malkin, put on a pair of white sunglasses, a floppy, safari-style khaki hat (with a tiny Canadian flag sticking out of it), took a squit of Gatorade (from Malkin) and grabbed two sticks, carrying one in each hand.

Ovechkin then dribbled the puck between the sticks and scored on the rebound with his left hand, drawing a huge applause from the capacity crowd at Bell Centre.

He also attempted to recreate 'The Goal' from Phoenix a few years back.

The winner has not been announced yet since it's being done by fan vote (via text message).

Also, I apologize for the lack of entries today. But as I explained earlier, the wireless is weaking havoc with my laptop. Hopefully, I'll be able to blog at least once more tonight.

Updated:As expected, Ovechkin won his second straight Breakaway Challenge title, earning more than 40-percent of the vote.

Finally some fair voting in Montreal. Way to go Ovie!

With 42% of the vote. Makes up a little for prior favoritism.

Congrats, people were talking about him using props a couple weeks ago, I wonder if Getzlaf will say his shots were "overated"?

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 24, 2009 8:50 PM | Report abuse

If money wasn't an option, I could be okay with Malkin playing here. Especially now that it seems he and Ovi aren't going to kill each other. Next Pens-Caps game will be interesting to see, though.

wut.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 24, 2009 8:56 PM | Report abuse

i thought the 2nd move that hit the post was was absolutely sick (back hand, put the puck behind him, shoot from behind his legs).

since ovy has been determined to put malkin's head on a stick the caps are 2 for 2 (record not so great the previous years)...i'd like to see the attempted killing continue.

Kudos to Chara for putting some use into an otherwise useless, yet entertaining, distraction. I hope the charity idea catches on for next year's events.

Ovie rocks!

Posted by: UnionStation | January 24, 2009 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Not only do we have the BEST player in the NHL, but we also have the most entertaining player in the NHL.

BTW, until they outlaw giants, aka MAN MOUNTAINS from the hardest shot...Chara.

Goal by Giroux. Bears up 2-1. 10 and change left in the game.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 24, 2009 9:10 PM | Report abuse

Ovie needs to work on his shootout skills!

Rachel216, Amen!

Hahaha! Awkward semi-brilliant Bruins-Caps game commercial.
Bears win 2-1! Neuvirth with 30 saves.

Ovie was wearing a Tilly hat...made in Canada. Great performance!

Posted by: luvdcaps | January 24, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

I liked Getzlaf's moves, but Ovi definitely had the best performance.

Posted by: jen-s | January 24, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Love my Tilly hat!

Oh, and Ludeman95

"I wonder if Getzlaf will say his shots were "overated"?"

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 24, 2009 8:50 PM

fellow blogger richmandphil beat him to it.

"weak.

I guess he doesn't understand the showmanship aspect of this spectacle.

Posted by: Greg S. | January 24, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

you are an idiot.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 24, 2009 9:55 PM | Report abuse

Anyone who calls someone else an idiot on this blog for posting his opinion is a super-sized idiot.

Children, behave yourselves. No need for the name calling.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 24, 2009 10:06 PM | Report abuse

Exactly my point.

Posted by: waitingsince75 | January 24, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else sense just a bit of the ghost of Southeast Jerome?

Posted by: AlexVa1 | January 24, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil

? why you name calling?

Posted by: mauree | January 24, 2009 10:08 PM | Report abuse

going out of his way to call me out on an illogical inference from a very simple statement. getzlaf behind the net goal was awesome. st louis's was also awesome. ovechkin was funny.
i think st louis or getzlaf shouldve won. big deal. that is my opinion, he didnt have to go out of his way to call me out with an inference that doesnt even have any correlation or make any sense.

in the end, cry about it.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 24, 2009 10:18 PM | Report abuse

My comment was made in response to Getzlafs comments about Ov's spin-o-rama from last year. If anything I liked Kane's use of the knob of his stick. And St Louis had the goalie looking up at the rafters when his dropped it, haha
