Post Practice Briefing

In case you missed it earlier, the Caps demoted Keith Aucoin and cut loose invitee Jakub Cutta, thus reducing the camp roster to 29 players (not including Brian Pothier).

And if you take out Tyler Sloan, Simeon Varlamov and Grant McNeill - all of whom appear to be Hershey-bound - that leaves the Caps with 26 players and three cuts left to make. It's looking like Chris Bourque and Quintin Laing will need to force their way into the forward lineup and Sami Lepisto and Karl Alzner are battling for the last spot on defense. It's possible that both Lepisto and Alzner will make it, but that would require one of them to displace an incumbent.

"It's always tough," Boudreau said, speaking in general terms as to not tip his hand. "It's the one part of the job no one likes because you're telling very good people, people you really like, that they haven't achieved their goal fully. But they're close."

*The Caps' power play ranks first in the league this preseason, scoring at an impressive 38.1-percent clip (8 for 21). Boudreau isn't getting too excited, however.

"It' preseason," he said. "We could be great. But come Oct. 15, if we're 1 for 23, people are going to going to be saying what the hell is going on?"

*Ovechkin was back on the penalty kill last night and scored shorthanded thanks to a
nifty return pass from David Steckel. This morning, Ovechkin was openly lobbying for some more time on the PK, Boudreau said.

"Alex is asking all the time," Boudreau said. "The first thing he said when we got out there this morning was, 'How did you like my goal? How did you like my goal?' He's always pushing for more [ice time]. It's hard to deny when he does stuff well."

Asked if he might get some time there during the regular season, Boudreau sounded more open to the idea than he has in the past, saying, "I don't know. We'll play it by ear."

Will the Caps still own Cutta's NHL rights, or does his release mean they've cut the ties? Not that I'm dying to see him in a Caps uniform again; just curious.

Posted by: blanket | September 30, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

I know he's released from the tryout... not sure what the expiratioin date for Cutta's rights is... Anyone?

Posted by: FrankM73 | September 30, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

Sounds like BOTH Lepisto and Alzner will be here.

Maybe that's bad news for Erskine and/or Jurcina.

Bourque and Laing will be the 1st two called up, but will most likely start in Hershey.

We'll see if Kozlov can stay healthy.

Posted by: CantMissKid | September 30, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

I have one idea for discussion. Why not dress 7 defensemen and one less wing. Let OV double shift. He does any way. Why not encourage him to take shorter shifts, knowing he will be right back out there. Any thoughts?

Posted by: Rich C | September 30, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

@ #94,

I don't know what the heck is going on at TSN. They also had a headline that said something sililar to "The Capitals Improve to 5-2."

Seems like some folks are enjoying their Labatt's Blue just a LITTLE too much North o' the Border...ya think?!

Posted by: OleMiss | September 30, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

If you get a forward leaving the game hurt, then you have three lines and a spare dude instead of just rotating 5 D if a D goes down. It's probably pretty risky in that way.

Posted by: Jordan | September 30, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Hey Tarik,

Any comment from GMGM on the Hockey News rumors from Chicago? I'd kinda like taking Byfuglien if we had to lose Nylander, but that's just me.

Posted by: Section 117 | September 30, 2008 1:37 PM | Report abuse

I love how Coach BB keeps it real.

I think Ovie would play the full 60 minutes if he could.

Posted by: Jill | September 30, 2008 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Is it possible that we bring up both Lepisto and Alzner, cut (I assume) Jurcina, and simply bear the brunt of whatever penalty we get?

Isn't it possible to assume that Ted would be willing to pay a fine to field the best possible team?

(Is that the penalty for being over the cap? Did we ever establish what the actual penalty was?)

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | September 30, 2008 1:47 PM | Report abuse

I am not positive, but I heard that the penalty for being over the cap is forfeiting games until you are under the cap.

Posted by: Tim | September 30, 2008 1:50 PM | Report abuse

"but that would require one of them to displace an incumbent."

This is how you know you are writing for a DC newspaper ...

Posted by: pricklypanda | September 30, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

These Nylander trade rumors just won't die. I really hope we keep him but who knows what GMGM has up his sleeve. If Lepisto and Alzner stay, Nylander and Jurcina could get packaged together in a trade. Stranger things have happened.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | September 30, 2008 2:05 PM | Report abuse

I wouldn't put Ovie on the PK much at all, if ever. Definitly only against teams with no mega-powerful shots, a la Kovulchuk. Ovechkin WILL block shots and that means potentially (inevitably? after all, this is still the Caps we're talking about) taking one on the ankle, foot, knee... I really don't think its worth it. We have other guys who are more than qualified to handle those duties. I don't see Semin blocking shots as readily, and he shouldn't.
I'm getting an ulcer just thinking about it.

Posted by: oo7 | September 30, 2008 2:05 PM | Report abuse

I hope Bourque makes it into the line up.

Posted by: MNMNT | September 30, 2008 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Lose both Juice and Erksine -- umm who's left to clean out the crease on the PK? I'm not a big fan of the sexy lumberjack (no idea how that nickname started but it's super funny), and Juice has his issues with passing, but Sami and Alzner are not exactly earthgraders on the ice (mixed metaphor must be for lunch). I think the Caps need to keep Juice and wave bye-bye to Erksine -- my two cents

Posted by: JIM | September 30, 2008 2:19 PM | Report abuse

guys taking over 1 minute shifts is crazy whether it is ov or semin or anyone
it is selfish and needs to be addressed

Posted by: wendel | September 30, 2008 2:20 PM | Report abuse

I don't want Nyls or Juice gone. I think people want change bringing in those new guys just for the sake of change in those cases. Especially in the case of Lepisto.

@ DrinkingPartner

It is not possible to go into the season over the Cap. Bill Daley was on NHL live yesterday and said you cannot go into the season over. so that means that when season starts you have to make the movement to get under the cap.Your hand gets forced then.

The WaPo Caps Circus 1st annual FHL draft took place Sunday night. The Front Page hosted the event and after a few technical glitches the draft started and Keef has the much anticipated 1st pick overall.

Creamy Snack Packs = keef
Games Misconduct = go skins go
Stanton Park Ice Raiders = Edgecomb
Mi5 Murderers = oo7
Baltimore Sombreros = Sombrero Guy
Banzai Alexandria = Jordan
Foggy Bottom Boys = honed
Cucamunga Cracker Killers = MNMNT
Ben Loves Bacon = TFL
Fairfax Madrachim = Yosh
Lorton 828 Chiefs = 828
Odeon Sex Panthers = JSchon
Ice Breakers Goal Shakers = capscorndog
Drunken Lullabies = fullright

1.1 keef
LW Alex Ovechkin - Anyone not taking him in Capitals fan draft first, should be lambasted and sent to Pittsburgh.

1.2 go skins go
C Sidney Crosby - 1st d0uche b@g taken. However, if healthy, top 2 fantasy player. I didnt want the 2nd pick.

1.3 edgecomb
LW Jarome Iginla - Not a goaltender here, but very solid PF numbers. First brother taken and last.

1.4 oo7
C Evgeni Malkin - 2nd d0uche b@g taken. Can he produce with a healthy Crosby and weaker wings? Yet to be seen. The ugliest player in the draft.

1.5 Sombrero Guy
C Joe Thornton - Kinda of a surprise here, top goalies still available and there are only 6 elite goalies. Thornton should provide lots of assists and power play points. Kind of a boring pick.

1.6 Jordan
LW Henrik Zetterberg - He is the best player on the best team, solid fantasy numbers except PIMs. Jared Leto will play him in any movie about Zetterberg.

1.7 Honed
D Dion Phanuef - Wow, this is really early for a blueliner, but you can't argue he's the best fantasy d-man. What kind of name is Phaneuf.

G Martin Brodeur - Finally, the first goalie taken. Brodeur has been a stats monger for a decade now. AARP knocking on the door.

1.9 TFL
LW Dany Heatley - Fell into his lap was the best offensive player in the Worlds. Excellent driving skills.

1.10 Yosh
G Robert Luongo - Might be the best goalies but is an awful team. 2nd ugliest player on the team.

1.11 828
G Evgeni Nabokov - Here go the goalies and its about time. Not quite as good as Luongo but on a much better team. 2 Evgeni's taken already.

1.12 JSchon
G Jean-Sebastian Gigueere - Rated as the 2nd best goalie in most FHL circles, good team with a good defense and high powered offense. 1st player with 3 names taken.

1.13 capscorndoog
G Jose Theodore - Goalies are going like flies. Jose should benefit from a high powered offense and win a lot of games. 2nd Capital taken in 1st round.

1.14 fullright
C Olie Jokinen - Gets a much need change of scenary but not a lot to work with since their best 3 skaters are natural centers. 3 ugliest player in the league.

Posted by: JSchon | September 30, 2008 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Golly Wendel, you are right. Let us bench OV since he ridiculously takes shifts over 1 minute long.

Whil it is in the best interest of the player to probably keep your shifts to 45 second or so, can anyone remember a situation where OV's fatigue was the cause of a late game letdown?

Posted by: Leeguru | September 30, 2008 2:48 PM | Report abuse

2.15 fullright
LW Ilya Kovalchuk - He will get 50 goals, but also get you -30, better pick up a couple Red Wings to compensate.

2.16 capscorndog
G Carey Price - Montreal provides a great place for Price to excel, forget his youth he is really good.

2.17 JSchon
C Pavel Datysuk - I was lucky to have him available here. He will be centering Hossa and should rack up a ton of points.

2.18 828
RW Marian Hossa - Speaking of Hossa, he should flourish in Detroit, more so than in Pittsburgh.

2.19 Yosh
D Mike Green - Way to early for Greeny in normal drafts, but in here not surprising. Should come close to 20 goals and 60 points.

2.20 TFL
G Marc-Andre Fleury - Should win a lot of games and post decent numbers. Unattractive pick.

2.21 MNMNT
C Vinny Lecavilier - Fantasy points should be awesome with the exception of +/- and PIM's.

2.22 Honed
G Henrik Lundqvist - King Henrik will be called on to win a lot of games with a overhauled lineup in front of him.

2.23 Jordan
D Nicklas Lidstrom - What can you say about this guy? And he can play for another 5 years.

2.24 Sombrero Guy
G Chris Osgood - Had to pick up a goalie here and why not Osgood? Should win a lot and benefit from the best defense in the league.

2.25 oo7
C Niklas Backstrom - I had him ranked pretty high but not this high. He should improve on his numbers from last year, I'm thinking 18G and 62A.

2.26 Edgecomb
G Ilya Bryzgalov - The much ballyhooed Ilya taken here. He was the #1 fantasy hockey mid season pick up last year.

2.27 go skins go
RW Jonathan Cheechoo - He is looking for a bounce back year this year. Very good RW.

2.28 keef
G Cristobal Huet - One of last years hero's gets taken here, good pick.

3.34 Jordan - RW Daniel Alfredsson
3.35 honed - LW Brendan Morrow

great idea let ov do what he wants even though bb wants shorter shifts
after all he is ov
what stupid logic u use leeguru
he doenst have to do what the coach says..great plan for team chemistry

Posted by: wendel | September 30, 2008 2:58 PM | Report abuse

So instead of recapping the draft, I'll just post the teams...

We'll start with

Creamy Snack Packs
Owner - Keef
Bobby Gould Division

C Jonathan Toews
C Saku Koivu
LW Alexander Ovechkin
LW Daniel Carcillo
RW Martin Havlat
RW Petr Sykora
D Zdeno Chara
D Tobias Enstrom
D Andrej Meszaros
D Mattias Ohlund
Daniel Briere
Pierre-Marc Bouchard
Andrew Cogliano
Brooks Orpik

Cristobal Huet
Tomas Vokoun

Obviously the star player here is Ovechkin, he's going to be a monster. The question is what else is here? My answer is nothing special. Toews and Koivu are an average C paring. Carcillo only gives you PIM's and nothing else. Chara is nice, but the rest of the blueline is average. Huet should win some games but Florida isnt going to win much for Vokoun.

Posted by: JSchon | September 30, 2008 3:00 PM | Report abuse

Question regarding this Nyls nonsense. If losing Nylander would be a serious blow to the Caps, as it states in the article, why would we do it when we don't have to?

Posted by: CT Caps Fan | September 30, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Game Misconduct
Owner - go skins go
Jason Doig Division

C Sidney Crosby
C Eric Staal
LW Michael Cammalleri
LW Ryan Malone
RW Jonathan Cheechoo
RW Mike Knuble
D Andrei Markov
D Tomas Kaberle
D Kimmo Timonen
D Braydon Coburn
Antoine Vermette
Sheldon Souray
Jarret Stoll
Sergei Samsonov

Martin Biron
Martin Gerber

Great C's here and for the most part solid skaters. Not sure if getting both Timonen and Coburn is smart thing, but it could work out. The big weakness is in net, both Biron and Gerber were both tettering on being replaced last season.

Uh oh ... wendel is picking on Leeguru again (when will he learn that he's messin' with the guru?!?).

Is it just me or did Tarik write a couple of subtle "Cutta" puns?

If you are not drafting from those teams, then who the heck do ya got? Some big boys from Manchester and a bunch of no names? Maybe you need to pass on the fantasy league next season ... ;-)

Posted by: Boo! | September 30, 2008 3:24 PM | Report abuse

Stanton Park ice Raiders
Owner - Edgecomb
Bobby Gould Division

C Joe Sakic
C R.J. Umberger
LW Paul Kariya
RW Jarome Iginla
RW Daniel Cleary
D Chris Pronger
D Philippe Boucher
D Jaroslav Spacek
D Mike Komisarek
Tomas Holmstrom
Paul Stastny
Jack Johnson
Andrei Kostitsyn

Ilya Bryzgalov
Manny Legace
Andrew Raycroft

This would be a great team if it were 2002, Sakic, Kariya, Pronger and Homstrom? Lets add Bure, Molgilny and Amonte to that list. Nothing on this wows me, should be middle of the road.

Posted by: JSchon | September 30, 2008 3:29 PM | Report abuse

Mi5 Murderers
Owner - oo7
Jason Doig Division

C Evgeni Malkin
C Nicklas Backstrom
LW Patrick Sharp
LW Zach Parise
RW Martin St. Louis
RW Chris Clark
D Brent Burns
D Mark Streit
D Tom Poti
D Brent Seabrook
Sergei Fedorov
Sam Gagner
Dustin Penner
P.J. Axelsson

Tim Thomas
Niklas Backstrom

Malkin and Backstrom are very good up the middle. The wings are good too, picking Clark was definitely a stretch. The blueline is middle of the road. Tim Thomas and Manny Fernandez will split time in Boston.

Posted by: JSchon | September 30, 2008 3:35 PM | Report abuse

Baltimore Sombreros
Owner - Sombrero Guy

C Joe Thornton
C Jason Spezza

RW Marian Gaborik
RW Miroslav Satan
D Scott Niedermayer
D Jay Bouwmeester
D Rob Blake
D Brad Stuart
Michael Nylander
Simon Gagne
Patrick O'Sullivan
Fabian Brunnstrom

Chris Osgood
Marty Turco

This is a very sound team from top to bottom. Goaltending should be one of the best in the league for wins and bench player Gagne could be great once again.

Hey did anyone post that Gonch will most of the season (4-6 months) with shoulder surgery. The Pens may be getting their dose of the post losing the cup curse that seems to affect so many teams. They are also without Ray Whitney and lost Malone and Hossa to free agency.

D Ryan Suter
D Tom Gilbert
Maxim Afinogenov
Shawn Horcoff
Marco Sturm
Mike Modano

Mathieu Garon
Pascal Leclaire

Some strong pieces here but also some glaring weaknesses. Lidstrom, Alfredsonn and Zetterberg are top notch but the goalie situation is shaky. LeClaire is nice but Columbus wont make the playoffs and Garon is guaranteed the job in Edmonton.

Heath! Schutlz needs to be up here. Send Juice somewhere else. (was seasoning what you were doing when you held out? :) )

For those that don't care about the fantasy hockey stuff, there is a scrolling wheel on your mouse. Use it. I do. I do like Jschon's comments at the end of each team though.

@Boo! Wendell isn't picking on me. I baited the boy. HE thinks OV should be disciplined for staying on the ice too long. I asked him a question, he chose to not answer. Too easy

Columbus beat Chicago 8-1

"All of Columbus' goals came against Cristobal Huet, a free agent signed to a four-year, $22.5 million deal in July. Huet, who finished with 15 saves, is the Blackhawks' new top goalie, likely taking over for Nikolai Khabibulin, who was placed on waivers Monday. Khabibulin is entering the final season of a four-year, $27 million contract."

I did answer but i guess u didnt get it hurts the team if he ignores what bb wants to install If he is such a leader he should be a team player not selfishly floating around the offensive end trying for 1 more shot then floating back for a change while the other team heads into our end. If u think it is ok for ov to do his own thing thats your call. But i think it needs to be addressed and so does bb since he mentioned the situation in the press. We need less i i i and more we we from everyone even or especially ov

Quick someone kick Kozlov in the groin so that he would go on LTIR and we can give his slot to Bourque. Caps problem solved.

Let's assume that Fehr and Stecks can't be sent down without clearing waivers. If they can then they both go down and are insurance. But I don't want to lose this level of prospect. Send Alzner and Lepisto down. Trade Kozlov and Nylander for a top four defenseman and a prospect or two. This way you have made room for assets that you don't want to lose, created a stronger D group and set up a future group of several Hershey D to take the place of Poti/Jurcina/Erskine next year. This leaves you with cap space for deals in season and the following lineup:

The top three right wings are really interchangeable. BB can mix and match. For me, I really like this lineup. I would prefer Feds on the third line to protect him from wearing out, but that doesn't seem to be a concern for BB at the moment. This lineup could make Bourque more of a reality as well. Otherwise you have a lot of Ted's money sitting in the pressbox.

D looks like this:

Poti-new guy

If you want your really young d-guys to get minutes, you don't want them up until they can get top 4 minutes, thus Alzner and Lepisto are in Hershey.

But next year you have Green, Mo, Schultz, Alzner, Lepisto, Godfrey and maybe even Carlson. WOW!

You're giving away 40+ goals and well over 100 assists for a D-guy that we don't need and prospects that we don't need.

This is instead of having three lines that can be a legitimate score threat, getting Alzner NHL time he needs and deserves, and be set for the future. I say keep the roster how it is as much as they possibly can

Posted by: Boo! | September 30, 2008 6:26 PM | Report abuse

@DC FURY and Jordan,

I understand what you are saying about the D. But Green and Mo are already our top two D. What I am saying is that we have some good young talent (Stecks and Fehr) that are not going to get minutes. If they can go down then great. We will have a strong SC contender this year with VERY capable backups in Hershey. But if they can't then we have to decide if we want to go for it this year and lose the potential that we have with those players and our future. I can tell you this, Stecks, Fehr, Flash and any other young gun like that will NOT clear waivers. Frankly, (if we cannot make a trade for Kozzie/Nyls) as much as I like players like Gordon and Bradley, I would rather cut them or trade them than lose players like Steckel and Fehr.

I like the idea of a Bowmeester type of Dman coming back our way and I like the idea of watching guys like Fehr and Stecks continue to develop. Personally, I think either of those players can take Kozlov's roster spot. Nylander is the concern here. Frankly, I would rather have Nylander on the second line and Feds would leave, based on pure performance. But Feds brings some intangibles (mentoring, winning history) that we don't have anywhere else in the lineup.

The bottom line is that if we keep all of the vet forwards we currently have, we will lose young guys with real potential if they cannot go to Hershey without passing through waivers. i am not prepared to do that.

I also think that a top four dman and those two young guys can make up for what we lose in Kozlov and Nylander. Schultz can get his 5 goals in the third pairing.

Posted by: kenwood | September 30, 2008 6:28 PM | Report abuse

Who said a goalie coulnt be captain?
The team gives it to the person they see as their best leader.

Posted by: JD | September 30, 2008 6:34 PM | Report abuse

Why do we need to get rid of someone? Why not keep the roster as is, be completely stacked at center, and have Fehr and Flash, Gordon and Steckle fight over spots. Who ever is performing better plays the other is scratched. With Pothier on LTIR we're under the cap so a trade is completely unnecessary. Everyone would like a Bowmeester type Dman, but the Panthers aren't likely to trade him now and even less likely to trade him to another SE division team. On top of the Alzner could be a Bowmeester type player if we let him play. Why are you so quick to put NHL caliber players in the AHL when we don't even need to?

You are officially the first American to ever utter the sentence:
"Sunderland here we come"

I guarantee that.

I guess its unusual for a goalie to be captain but not impossible. Practically not sure how that works. Often captains will talk to officials, try to clear up why a call was made (not made) during a break in play. If the face off is due to take place at centre ice or in the opposition end how is Luongo going to get involved? Most goalies during breaks use the time to re-position themselves and re-focus.

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | September 30, 2008 6:46 PM | Report abuse

You are really high if you think Steckel or Fehr can step in and get the same numbers as Kozlov of Nylander. And Steckel played like every game last year, didn't he? He's getting plenty of ice time.

Posted by: Jordan | September 30, 2008 6:46 PM | Report abuse

@ Kenwood -- If the Caps trade away home grown talent for a mercenary free agent, then you screw up the farmteam vibe. Also the Caps and every team will need people who are not on the opening night line-up -- injuries happen, unfortunately. Your logic would have led to trading away Green and Schultz and Backstrom as having not lived up to their potential yet. The Caps are growing a team from the bottom up which tends to keep salaries down (home-town discount). The NHL may even take a cue from the NBA and allow teams to go over the cap if they resign current players (who knows). Finally, an expensive FA blueliner would put the Caps over the cap. This team should be able to make a good run this year with the players they have.

Why would the caps trade nylander away? First he has a NO TRADE CLAUSE. Second he has three more years on his contract. He is a good asset on the caps. He will be a good fit on that second line with semin.

As for Alzner getting moved to the A:
THe caps are paying him somewhere around 1.235 a year for the next 3 years. The only reason they would send him down is for like 5 games to get some experience. I would be very surprised if they sent him down to begin with though.

I've been thinking about the rankings. Yeah, got some idle time on my hands. In the "for what it's worth" column which frankly is not much.

1. Montreal - They will be very tough to beat this year. I think they could go to the finals this year.

2. Philly - Hate to say it, but they didn't lose much and gained a lot. They play tough and can score.

3. Caps - I don't see Carolina beating us this year, and Tampa has - well - issues. Defense remains suspect. I think second round this time.

4. Pittsburgh
5. NJ Devils
6. Boston
7. Rangers
8. Ottawa

Those last three are questionable. I just don't see anyone else in the SE getting in. The Atlantic Div is very strong. NE is stronger than our SE div, but it's pretty much a crap shoot.

1. Detroit - Duh! They just got stronger in the off season. I pick them to repeat. This time against Montreal.

2. San Jose - Annual underachievers in the past will go pretty deep with McClellan at the helm. I don't think he'll give the players any slack, and he's a master tactician.

3. Calgary - I really hate Keenan and Bertuzzi, but the team will win their division. They have good guns and made some defensive moves in the off.

4. Edmonton
5. Chicago
6. Anaheim
7. Dallas
8. Colorado

Again, the last 3 are a crap shoot, but I think this is pretty close.

@ DC FURY, Jordan, crazedfan and Jim,

First off, i wasn't talking about Bowmeester specifically. Someone in their contract year is not what i had in mind. Second, Steckel got a lot of minutes last year because of injuries. Where is he going to play? Where is Fehr going to play? If they don't go down to Hershey we have three options: trade some people, cut some or sit some. If you sit young players they can't develop and that hurts you in the future. I understand the future is now, but the goal is sustained success, right? You also need to read my post more carefully. I am not trading away homegrown talent, I am making room for homegrown talent. I don't want to trade young guys, I want them to play and grow.

So what would you do? You can't sit the young guys (Flash, Fehr, Stecks, etc) in the press box and you can't send them to Hershey. What do you do to give the team the best chance to win this year, yet continue to grow for the future?

Of course all this is moot as soon as we have a couple of injuries. Hopefully something will break loose before we lose a portion of our future. The bottom line is where do you play everybody? I feel I have identified the weak links (Kozzie-production, Nyls-age)for the top nine forwards. Another option would be to put the guys on the fourth line and sit Brash and Brads. Against certain finesse teams that makes for a VERY good lineup.

Posted by: kenwood | October 1, 2008 6:34 AM | Report abuse

regardless of Nyls's age, he can and will be productive this year, and may be the key to getting Flash to break out at the NHL level. At least it has seemed that way in the pre season.

I do understand people being frustrated with Kozlov's performance in the playoffs, and his tendency to disappear at times but I also would not be so quick to just throw him away.

It seems at the moment that Fehr is a man without a line, but I have a hard time arguing the logic of trading away established NHL vets with the ability to produce for an unknown.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | October 1, 2008 7:21 AM | Report abuse

Say what you will, but I think the Florida Panthers have the potential for SE 2nd place this year. Maybe its because coming originally from Long Island, it is in my blood to hate Laviolette. However, Vokoun is easily the best keeper in the SE Divison. Panthers also might have the most solid D.

I have no fear of Hurricanes.

Posted by: Caps 423 | October 1, 2008 7:32 AM | Report abuse

@Kenwood -- Fehr and Flash have to pass through waivers to be sent down, so that's as good as getting rid of them -- not a great idea. With injuries and slumps, some of the younger players will get a chance to come in and shine, so they will not always be in the press box. Kozlov opens up a lot of space for other players on his line. He can hold onto the puck, pull players to him and aim a laser pass to Backs or Ovie -- how do you think his +/- was so high? He's not perfect, but he is a very good compliment to OV and he is fairly inexpensive at 2.5 for a first line wing/center. As Tommy Boy says, "Let it go, Richard."

Posted by: JIM | October 1, 2008 7:46 AM | Report abuse

@ Greg S

I think Boston barely gets in at 8 and NJD don't make it for the first time in an epoch, letting the Canes slip in at 7. I agree that the Pens will slump with their fa loses and injuries to Whitney and Gonchar. I think you are right that TBL win the free agency season and stink up the joint in the regular season, i.e. no playoffs and Melrose is back to commentating at the end of the year.

I "choose" to read your post - Amen, brother! :-) Most of us go off on tangents from time to time (especially in the summer). In the infamous words of our friend "who cares?", WHO CARES?!? If I don't care about what someone posted, I skip it. But very often the banter in this unusual community of ours is most amusing! So have at it and stop me before I go off on a "free country" rant (I don't want to exclude our friends in the UK and elsewhere!). Suffice it to say, if someone has something to say, they have every right to be heard - it is up to you whether or not you want to listen.

I've seen a couple predictions of Buffalo making the playoffs ...

Wow, I hope not.

Of course, I dislike half the teams in the East (Phi, Pit, NYR, Buf, Car, Atl ...)

So you said you were always "trying" - were you ever successful? :-) Either way, I may need photographic proof! ;-)

Dave, Tarik said Johnson will be starting this game while JT will be starting the final two preseason games.

At least, that's what I remember. It's hard to focus, when everyone is posting other information. Geez, can't we just talk about what Tarik writes about.

Pitt Fans are getting a little bit nervous about their injury situation. Do you think that not having Gonchar and Whitney from the start will cost them 10 points in the standings??? Ten points from last year s total puts them on the outside looking in for the play-offs. Just a thought!

Rock the Red!

I'll be interested in seeing the starting lineups from Tarik. I'd love to see the Caps win the East, but I don't think that will happen this year. Hope I'm wrong, but...

Thanks for the reminder about starting goalies.

Fortunately no photographic evidence exists.

Does anybody think tha Jurcina should be cut so we can fit both Alzner and Lepisto? I never liked Jurcina and I don't think he is getting any better...lets start really training these new defensive prospects!

I think I am one of the few who has not written off Juice. I thought he was pretty good when he came to the Caps (and actually wondered why the Bruins let him go). But last season he was non-existent. I am hoping that he was lost in the shuffle last season, and that he will settle down and play to his potential. He is still young, and he is a big guy. Kinda like Flash - I have never been a big fan of his (and never even thought he played "pretty good"), but he is young and big - he has potential. I give them both this season before I write them off. I get the feeling that Alzner and Lepisto are just a smidge immature for the bigs, but I have not seen either one of them play a lot, so I can't even say that with a great deal of confidence. No matter how it plays out, I think we will still be weak on the blue line this season (not terrible, just not strong). We are definitely more of an offensive than a defensive threat.
