Pothier: 'I Feel Better Every Game'

Tarik's story for tomorrow's paper looks at the progress of veteran defenseman Brian Pothier, who's played in three games with the Caps since returning from post-concussion syndrome.

Here's an early look:

In the final minutes of last Thursday's game in Tampa, the Washington Capitals' Brian Pothier was crushed in the corner by 6-foot-5, 254-pound Lightning winger Evgeny Artyukhin.
The Capitals' coaches and players looked on anxiously, but they were relieved moments later when the defenseman popped up and skated away. Pothier was fine and, more important, had passed another test in his return from post-concussion syndrome.
"He got me pretty good," Pothier said with smile this week.
Now comes the difficult part in Pothier's long road back to the NHL: becoming the player he was before the devastating injury that nearly ended his career.

Lindsay,

Thanks for posting the links to Tarik's WaPo articles. The RSS feeds don't work for them. Can someone check on that.

P.S. you've the typo in headline: PothIer

I don't know why, but this line made me chuckle.

point production from a defenseman not named Mike Green

Sad, I know.

I know I am comparing the NHL and the AHL but Gerber gets a 3 game suspension and Rask gets nothing? I know it's the AHL but Rask's tirade was much worse than Gerber's...

Posted by: rachel216 | March 25, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

O never mind, I answered my own question. Gerber "physically threatened" the refs, Rask didn't.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 25, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

When Rask threw his stick I thought it was going to hit his teammate on the ice, went right over his head. haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 25, 2009 7:23 PM | Report abuse

Ludeman95: Yeah, Rask could of killed someone! The funniest part was when he slipped. When he tossed the crate, his teammates were just standing there, shocked.

For anyone interested in the out of town scoreboard, Buffalo scores one late in the 1st, and FLA-BUF is tied 1-1 at the end of 1. OTT-CAR is scoreless at the end of 1.

Remember that a Florida regulation loss clinches a playoff spot. And of course, a Carolina loss is good too, as that brings us closer to the division title.

Good comments on the video's Greg? some are even on your side!

"What I like is that when he has the time and space, he can make that long pass and he sees the offensive side of the game really well," Boudreau said. "That's one of his assets -- his puck-moving ability, that first pass right onto someone's tape. It's something not everyone can do, and no team has enough of them."

thats all i need to read. WHEN Pothier has time and space he's capable. So that means when he has pressure on him from a forecheck he crumbles like a house of cards. Now let me ask this....how many times in a playoff game does a defenseman have pressure on him? The answer is T O N S

Meaning, a ton of times Brian Pothier will be making defensive mistakes galore. Just like he did pre-concussion. There's a ton of AHL defensemen who also do pretty well when they have time and space with regards to making a good outlet pass. This nonsense about McPhee staying pat at the deadline due to Pothier's imminent return is self-serving garbage that makes me want to puke. McPhee didn't try to stay pat, he just couldn't get anything done. And Pothier was never a great defensemen pre-injury and he's not suddenly going to morph into one now. His pre-concussion weakenesses still exist. And Bruce subconsciously alluded to that in his comments.

Personally, I'd like to see the Panthers make the playoffs. Good for the SE.

Zednik scores one for Florida, who leads 2-1 at the end of 2. The Carolina game is scoreless through 2.

Miss the Zed

Posted by: Sonyask | March 25, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

Sonyask: Same here. Heck, I'd be okay with Florida winning tonight actually. That means that we could clinch the playoff spot ourselves on Friday night at home.

Can't wait for Fri. night! Rock the red!

i dont know about the rest of you, but after looking at those video's, i'm convinced that ovie is a lazy, selfish player who doesnt back check. i mean, of the 400 plus games he's played, there is video evidence of 2 plays where he didnt play defense. shameful. hart, richard trophies are nice, but i want a selke winner. maybe a lady byng too...

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | March 25, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

Zednik got a puck off the bridge of his nose; he was standing behind the net on a shot... Ouch. Off to the dressing room for repair. Florida leads 3-1 with 14 min left, but Buffalo scored as I'm typing this. Pominville on a great redirection from Connolly, 3-2 with 13 min left.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 25, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

And by Connolly, I mean Tallinder...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 25, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

...And just now, MacArthur scores one five-hole on Vokoun, the game is tied with 12:55 left. Sheesh.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 25, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

And a PPG for Buffalo with a deflection in front! This game has gone berserk! Buffalo leads 4-3 with 11:39 to play. Buffalo scores 3 goals in 2:07!

If anyone is reading this and has Center Ice, check this game out.

In case of Rask the ref should have gotten suspension.

Florida just recieved 3 goals in 3 mins...

Forgive me if this has already been talked about. The Caps signed a guy to a one-year contract and he's going to Hershey. But I thought we were at our contract limit. Has anyone heard anything about the specifics? I'm not sure how this works.

Caps just made the playoffs...

Posted by: _828 | March 25, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

Afinogenov scored an empty netter to ice this one, and then he got clobbered by Horton well after the play was over. That started a minor melee, let's say.

Buffalo scores four unanswered goals in the 3rd period to defeat Florida 5-3, and two teams just clinched playoff spots: the Washington Capitals and the New Jersey Devils.

Go Caps! Let's lock up the division next! :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 25, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Right, and like Rachel said, Carolina won tonight, so our magic points number against Carolina is 3. Let's bring it to 1 on Friday night! :)

_828: really?

rachel, yes the Caps just officially made the playoffs. :) And the division to come soon after!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 25, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Greg, the magic number is still 5 with Carolina... they won... as long as they keep winning the number is 5. If we win, that number goes to 3, if they lose and we win, that number goes to 1. Make sense?

Posted by: _828 | March 25, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Yay the standings are updated! The X in front of Washington Capitals! :) Now let's beat Tampa! Hurry up Friday!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 25, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

828, total brainfart on my part, you're right it's still 5.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 25, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

It's by total points - Carolina has 89 points right now... they have 6 games left, so the maximum number of points they can get is 101. The Caps are at 97 right now, we need 5 to get to 102. That all depends if Carolina loses... each game they lose, their total points go down by 2.

Posted by: _828 | March 25, 2009 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Haha... I wish it were only 3. Either way, I think we can manage 5 points. Islanders, Atlanta, and Tampa should get us 6 points - easy.

I apologize is this was brought up already (missed the game last night), but had a question for Tarik...or anyone else who might know. How does a player get a game misconduct, 3 game suspension, yet no penalty is called in the game??? was that a complete botch job by the refs, or is there something that actually allows them to do that in the game. my assumption would be a penalty would be issued right away and then it would build up from there. just thinking that would have been a huge changing point in the game last night. thanks in advance.

Posted by: CapsSkins | March 25, 2009 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Can I just say how many empty netters the Pens have just missed? Like 5. Add in the attempt Fleury had that Malkin knocked down. Geez.

oo7,
It's all about maximum games. I actually already told Jschon and Sombrero about the secret - should have waited until I beat either one of them next round. You can set it up so that you get more players than the maximum amount of players... just gotta be good with math! ;)

Posted by: _828 | March 25, 2009 10:05 PM | Report abuse

haha

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 25, 2009 10:07 PM | Report abuse

what?!?!?

Posted by: oo7 | March 25, 2009 10:10 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, check out my max players... it won't pick just any player when you go over the max amount - it gives you all their stats the day of. You gotta set it up so a bunch of your players play the day you go over the max - check out my defense tonight... and went 3 games over the max amount - all stats count.

CapsSkins:
the game misconduct was called for pushing the official - none of his actions caused a disadvantage to the caps (to many men on ice, puck over the boards, tripping, hooking, etc). the infraction did not warrent any penalty box time.
