Poti aggravates groin injury

According to the Caps, defenseman Tom Poti was pulled from warmups because of a groin muscle injury. Poti, as you no doubt know, has been hampered by groin pulls all season.

I'll try to get a further update on his status after the game.

I can't watch this. It make me want to puke.

Posted by: ERHDC1 | March 3, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

ouch. Second SH goal but the Canes.
Carolina obviously watched tapes of our PP and of our defense. Caps need to step it up.

Posted by: Sonyask | March 3, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Done. This team needs to get their stuff together, they're falling apart. We don't want a Rangers-esque slide of losing the next 13 of 15.

Posted by: KurtNYC | March 3, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

What's record for most shorties allowed in one game? NOT SO FAST...

Posted by: jburksva | March 3, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Ummmmm, so whats happening? I just got home and ouch. I can't watch the game either, just listening.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 3, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, you're ruining my Poti for Clemmensen unfounded rumor with your facts and all.

Feel better, Tom. Now, can someone please kick our team's behind into gear?

Posted by: EricCarr | March 3, 2009 8:17 PM | Report abuse

Unbelievable. Canes up 3-0 and they still look like they more hungry. Unbelievable. WAKE UP CAPS!!

rachel, I don't think these goals were all Neuvirth's fault. But do you see the point that any goalie would look bad in front of these kind of performance?

Posted by: mauree | March 3, 2009 8:20 PM | Report abuse

So where is everyone that was saying "it's only one game" after the Avs game and the Panthers game?

Games like this have been ocurring more and more lately. This is worrying me.

mauree: YEAP. Totally seein' it now. We are very out of sync.. what has gotten into this team? Where is the hunger and the energy they used to have?

Posted by: rachel216 | March 3, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Man, Schultz sucks. A penalty shot he should have stopped and two SHGs that Ovi let go because he wasn't manning the point. Give it a break.

Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Unreal - with this performance tonight put a few more guys on edge tomorrow and put them out there to be traded. Ok that was sarcasm but one guy chases a penalty killer while three other guys stand around and watch? I hope Carolina does what Florida did. This team's getting a good wake up call and obviously didn't get the message from the other night. This is pathetic. All of the sudden now they get a little pressure on the PP and they don't know what to do.

Take note Coach Boudreau - you see how effective a penalty kill can be when you ATTACK the high men at the points and all over instead of sitting in that RIDICULOUS passive box.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | March 3, 2009 8:22 PM | Report abuse

Everyone is right here. Detroit lost 6 in a row and lost 8-0 to nashville. so what.

yeah, our bad games seem to be more frequent now, but its still not anything what you guys paint a picture of.

mauree, Its saying its unavailable. Is there something I need to do?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 3, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Semin is the only one who came to play today. Maybe Fleishman too - but that's it.

Posted by: patrone | March 3, 2009 8:18 PM
----------
I would add Bradley and Gordon to that list. They're not seeing much ice time because of the penalties but when they're out there, they're working hard.

Posted by: tess2201 | March 3, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

To be fair with Schultz, none of the goals was on him. He also made a good play on a 2 on 2 rush by the Canes (but he did lose the puck twice).

Posted by: mauree | March 3, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are playing irresponsible hockey. Previously stupid penalties, now selling out offensively and giving up easy scoring chances. They act like they are a fast breaking showtime basketball team. Those teams win alot of games but flame out when the playoffs go half court. No grit, not presence in front of the net. No taking the body and other teams go to our net with the puck at will. This team needs a serious attitude adjustment, not new players.

Posted by: michaelcoh | March 3, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

They don't seem to have that fire anymore. They are so sluggish. We'll be lucky to score 1 tonight. Why does no one stand in front of Ward? I see a downward spiral...

Posted by: rachel216 | March 3, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Alright, blinding anger subsiding ... calmer thinking says a quick fluke goal gets us back into this thing.

Double deflection off a bomb from the point by Greenie? Please?

Posted by: terrapin2930 | March 3, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

So what? The Caps are not the Red Wings; they are more likely to follow the route of the Rangers. I bet BB gets them back in gear, but this is a bad trend.

This team that I've been watching lately isn't the team I know. This can't be the Caps. What's gotten into them? Do they just don't care anymore? They said last game that they can't play like that again but they're playing the same way.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 3, 2009 8:31 PM | Report abuse

Sources are telling me that we are trying to give the Panthers and Canes extra points, so they can make it into the playoffs and hopefully rid everyone of the PENS.

Well, what do the players THINK is going to happen if they don't try any harder? Magical turnaround? Goal fairies delivering the tying goal? Ovie breaking out for six goals?

Maybe they need a bag skate, since they don't want to work on the ice for the 60 minutes we pay for.

The difference between the Caps and Red Wings is the WIngs are a veteran championship team, with multiple future members of the HOF. The Caps arent there yet, and besides AO, can we say for sure any cuurent Cap will be in the HOF ?

Can the web producer play goal in the third ?

@large23220 - calm your nerves. The sky is not falling. You've just been spoiled by watching a good hockey team be dominant. There is cause for concern now that two divisional opponents have come in here and handed the Caps their butts.

The sky is falling if they follow this up with 2 or 3 more games like this in a row.

Posted by: saintex | March 3, 2009 8:41 PM | Report abuse

to be fair, can't blame neuvy for all the goals, he's pretty much gotten zero help from the D. if anything, this game is a team effort, no one is into it and the blame should be shared by everyone. except a few who actually did come out to play tonight (semin, flash, brads, gordo)

Posted by: jogabonito | March 3, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: ERHDC1 | March 3, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

jmu:

he battled for the puck on the boards, felt on his knees. Still handled the puck and shot - still from his knees. It was lucky to go in, but still an awesome goal :)

Posted by: mauree | March 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

Not watching the game, but just checked the box score: 2 shorthanded goals, 1 power play goal, and a penalty shot... What is going on? Talk about special teams. Hope the Mites on Ice is more entertaining. Be interesting to see if these last two games has more/less impact on the trading deadline tomorrow. Personally, they should just stick with what they have as no team with Stanley Cup aspirations appear this bad in the past two games.

Let's get 4 goals in the third... if only we weren't putting ourselves in these huge holes and then trying to comeback in the 3rd. Also, is the 2nd period our worst period EVER? what is it about the second period? We suck so bad in the 2nd.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

I think we need Nylander back in the line-up. Maybe we are "throwing" a few to try to keep the pens out?????

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | March 3, 2009 8:43 PM | Report abuse

JMU,

Semin goes after the puck near the boards, falls on his knees, stickhandles to get a shooting lane. Once he does, he shoots, and next thing you see is the puck in the back of the net. I think it went 5-hole on Ward..

Posted by: elicea | March 3, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

@Large23220 - don't mock me pal. I didn't attack you with my post. I'm keeping it realistic. Believe it or not good teams can have crappy stretches. It's two games. If they play like this on Thursday and Sunday coming up then I'm going to hit the panic button. I've watched hockey long enough. This team is facing some adversity. WHo knows what the Semin goal does?

But don't come back at me mocking me. I didn't attack you. But if you want to go there - go right ahead. Real classy.

GMGM and Ted must be looking at each other and wondering what the hell do we do? Does this team need a spark or an influx of talent? How much does not having a captain affect the leadership? As currently constructed we will be lucky to win a playoff series and that's assuming we regain our confidence and effort. Otherwise a collapse is coming.

A young team that thinks they will coast into the playoffs. Here are my grit players to bring in tomorrow before 3pm. There are no Scott Stevens' out there but here are a few guys that can help stabilize this team.

Mark Recchi
Chris Pronger
Sean O'Donnell

While he has not lit up the score sheet, look what Matts Sundin has done to stabilize the Canucks. Experience is key in the playoffs.

The sky is not falling but we are talking about professional hockey players. Professionals need to put forth effort on a regular basis. Caps have won alot of games late and they act like they can win when they need to with a late goal. Last 8 home games 4-4 against lower shelf teams.

Posted by: michaelcoh | March 3, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

The USS Washington Capitals has sprung a leak. No energy, no cohesiveness. BB has not encountered this with this club. We'll see how he handles the adversity. A 15 point lead on Saturday is now down to 11, barring a comeback by the Thrashers tonight, (Fla 4-2 in the 3rd). If they continue on this course, the last game on the schedule in Florida could actually mean something. Somebody needs to step up in the clubhouse and say enough is enough. Where is the leadership?

I forgot about Federov. I meant the young developing players.

I've followed the Caps since the mid-80s, spent most of high school and college listening to Ron Webber call games, and as much I've enoyed the recent success, it does seem like history repeating itself with the playoff failure last year. A team that cant score who makes even an average goaltender look like the second coming of Hextall, Fuhr, Roy, or Brodeur.

And I attended Maryland in the immediate aftermath of the Len Bias tragedy, so I have a pretty fair idea of what awful sports teams look like.

Not defending the teams lack of effort, but with the comfortable lead they managed to build and an almost assured spot in the playoffs, it's inevitable there would be a let down in effort at some point. Be somewhat happy it's occuring now and not 15 games from now. The Caps are still in 1st and likely to stay there barring a total collapse. Playoff seeding makes little difference anymore as every year there are upsets and teams with much better regular season records go by the wayside. So, as long as the boys right the ship over the next month, we'll be just fine.

If Detroit can lay an egg and lose 8-0, then the Caps can certainly be expected to have a few listless efforts in the countdown to the playoffs. And, as we all know, that's the season that really counts. So, everyone cheer up as we already know we'll have home playoff games come mid-April. Last season at this time, that was but a dream. Cheers!

Question for Caps fans. Why do the Caps only play hard when they go down multipl goals? I see them doing this over and over again

Posted by: maven1918 | March 3, 2009 9:14 PM | Report abuse

well if you think the caps only play hard when they go down by multiple goals, you mustve missed about 35 of our wins.

caps look like the pens tonight? that can't be, because the pens are winning their 6th out of their last 7 games while the caps are getting smoked the second game in row, and the 4th time in their last seven

Posted by: puckheaded1 | March 3, 2009 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Two bomb of games in a row and nothing but up and down for the last three weeks has given me major concern. Defence still concerns me. I don't care who we get as long as they bring a veteren presence and somebody who can just shadow the other team's best player.

Posted by: blanknerc | March 3, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

This is not how a championship team plays. Yes, they will lose a few, and maybe even 2 or 3 in a row.

The difference here is that the Caps aren't skating, not hitting, playing as individuals, and spending a lot of time watching the other players.

This will be the second game in a row like that.

It's not the loss that bothers me. It's the lack of effort that ticks me off. It's paying Green $5M to watch the game.

We had so many before but now it's different. it makes me depressed, i want to be all happy cause help might be coming tomorrow but now i'm all worried about this team heading into the playoffs. Their play is slipping, i don't know what's wrong. i hope GMGM is at least spending some time watching this game cause we need major defensive help. and i'm sick of all these players trying to dangle and snip all the time, they're trying to be so fancy and it never works. Too often you watch the Caps and you wonder how much they get by just on skill alone without having to outwork the opposition. Lately we're seeing the results of that. They don't do well under pressure either. And if another team doesn't give us plenty of PPs then we look very ordinary

Two things to keep in perspective

1. The Caps are not the only team to have a hit a bit of a rough patch. The Bruins have, the Red Wings have, even the Sharks have. This was bound to happen, but this is a good team, it will pass.

2. In some respects, it's sort of a good thing for a team to go through a spell like this. It teaches a team how to deal with a losing streak and what they need to do to bounce back so that if this were to happen in the playoffs, they might have something to draw back on. I'm a Celtics fan too and even though they won it all last year, I felt like they had some trouble in the playoffs because they lost a few games in the first round and it was like they didn't know how to bounce back immediately because they hadnt had that sort of test in the regular season. Just a thought.

-Poor Neuvy. Left out to dry on most of the goals. Hopefully he doesn't let this get into his head and ruin his confidence.

30 teams play 82 games for the right to get to the season that matters, the playoffs. Even the eventual Stanley Cup champion will have a few crappy games along the way. Not excuses by weak fans, just the plain facts. The Panthers and 'Canes are fighting for a spot in the playoffs and came out with their 'A' games. Noone should be suprised by that as the Caps were in the same position last year. There is still more than a month to figure things out before the team is involved in games that really matter. So, everyone needs to relax. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Enjoy the ride.

rachel216,

They had at least two stinkers in a row on that West Coast swing early in the season. And you can have stinkers that you end up winning.

Every team goes through lulls. It's the frequency and the duration of those lulls that is telling.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 3, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

I'm actually kinda disappointed he's not getting traded. Not because I don't like him but because he's such an asset to us at our weakest position that the fact that we'd trade him pretty much ensures a really nice player in return.

Posted by: dcfury | March 3, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

Let's face it, it was just too much to ask this current team to try to win the Stanley Cup this year. Let's just get more experience in the playoffs and add more pieces to the foundation of Ovechkin, Semin, Green and Backstrom over the next few years. They are so young that it is just unrealistic to expect them to play consistently. It seems like they have also hit some sort of a wall (Maybe the trading deadline blues or something) and are just going through the motions the last 2 games. In fact, I have notice a lack of follow through on many checks until they are so far behind in the score board.

Fedorov is one of the classiest guys in the league. I would be shocked if what we saw was anything more than Fedorov slipping and falling on the ice like half of our team was doing all night.

It's sad that so many fans are jumping to the wrong conclusion. The board at washingtoncaps.com has an entire thread dedicated to the incident without a single person proposing the possibility that Fedorov slipped and fell. Sad...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 3, 2009 9:53 PM | Report abuse

And for those citing Fedorov laughing as he was getting up, it could have just been a reaction to the slipping and falling.

Until proven otherwise, Fedorov slipped and fell on hiw own or as a result of Semin and whoever else coming over to congratulate. The typical bad ice likely contributed as well.

Oh, I have no problem with people who just start to follow hockey or the Caps. I love it honestly, but I just don't understand what these people expect of this team. We aren't even done with our rebuild. Hell, our our goalie picks for our rebuild still have 2 years of development. I mean, even you who admits is new to hockey, can see our blue line/goalie problem without the solution being to throw our rebuild under the bus. This year, lets face it, was somewhat of a fluke and at the very least surprising. I was expecting a 6-8 playoff seed; not domination through the first 2/3rds of the regular season. They can't say that the past teams are different than the ones we have now, because our past teams HAD grit, HAD shutdown d men, HAD bondra, and we still lost.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 3, 2009 10:17 PM | Report abuse

richmondphil, It will definitely be an interesting rest-of-the-season. I agree though, we still have time. Its not like the core of our team is all late twenties and fading. I think I expected a 3-6 spot, but I never expected we'd be looking at the #1 spot with the thought of, "hey, maybe we *can* do that" at any point this season.
And I'm not new to hockey so much as the Caps. I *am* Canadian. lol But this is the first team I've cared about enough to really pick up the technical stuff. But I don't know the history of the team. I missed a lot of the stuff older fans can take for granted. Heck, I was eleven when they went to the finals. I don't have that past to look back on, so I look forward. And I honestly think the core of this team is perfectly capable of winning a Cup. Finding the little pieces to surround them is GMGM's job. And I'm going to trust him to do it.

I don't know about all y'all, but I know one thing: if Theodore has the flu, it's entirely possible he isn't alone. Not sure, but I spent enough time in rinks as a kid to pick up the basics. Honestly, my brother was a Habs fan until Roy went to the Avs, and sort of split his allegiance for a while, so I had absolutely no expectations for JT after hearing his whining and the whining of my Avs fan friend. :-P I really hoped JT would show up for the season and for the most part, he sort of has. I guess when you're expecting nothing, everything is an improvement. And I'm all for them flubbing stuff sooner rather than later.
And I'm busy all day tomorrow. I don't know why the world doesn't just stop on deadline day. Its highly inconveniencing to have stuff to do!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 3, 2009 10:33 PM | Report abuse

A terribly ugly game. Not that Neuvirth deserves too much blame, but the kid needs to work on that glove hand. As a goalie I can tell you a ton of make glove saves (including the flashy ones) is the position you hold it in. Neuvirth's glove was waaaaaay too low today and the Canes exploited it for three of their goals, and you could see them shooting there in the 3rd hoping for more.

The only positives I take from this game are these: Semin continues to play with that fire we saw in the playoffs last year. Kronwall looked good out there, hitting and joining the rush well. And finally the third period... We seemed to wake up a little in the third, and I'm hoping that trend continues and we get our game back on track.

Otherwise another ugly loss. 20 in regulation time now.

I am very optomistic about this team's prospects for the rest of this year and the coming years. I don't mind if they lose IF the effort is there. These last 2 games was just lazy play. Almost like their success has gone to their heads. That's a problem with a young team. There are a few vets out there, though. Fedorov should be talking. Poti should be trying to focus them more.

Laich may say that they're all professionals and adults and know what needs to be done, but even professionals have bosses, and adults need leaders to get stuff done.

So who's going to be the leader? This isn't anything fans, management or coaches can decide. The players need to.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 3, 2009 10:41 PM | Report abuse

Someone who I thought has been stepping up and proving his presence was Backstrom. He is a great two-way forward now at only 21. But even he was invisible for the past 2 days. God knows Semin, the only guy who has been on, hasnt historically shown that "leader" role but Datsyuk did say that Semin would emerge as a leader for whatever team he peaks on....

It's not that the Caps have lost two in a row, it's how they've lost two in a row. It's embarrassing. Against the Panthers, it was a terrible PK. Against the Hurricanes it was an awful PP. In both games, they've looked lackadaisical and sloppy. This is the stretch run of games, when teams really gear up for a playoff push. So while other teams are giving a maximum effort, the Caps are loafing. They need to right this ship sooner rather than later because this kind of effort and attitude can carry over into the playoffs, when all teams play to the best of their abilities. Maybe the Caps don't know how to play from a position of strength. Last year, they had nothing to lose and crawled all the way back. This year during the stretch run, they don't seem to have the same edge. (And I'm not referencing only the last two games. The month of February, in general, had stinkers against the Kings, Rangers, Avalanche, Flyers, Panthers and Thrashers.)

This is a talented team, but it needs to get its swagger and confidence back. This is the time of year when teams need to peak, not regress.

Just got back from the game and just finished reading most of this rubbish.
I always try and look at the positive side of things. Like I said before, I'm not a half empty type of guy.
So, with that being said... it's better that this stuff happens now instead of mid April.
You all need to remember - the Caps are not the hunter anymore... they are the hunted. You will have to get used to it and so will they. Again, it's a learning process for both the fans and the players.

I guess I could see Semin as the leader. Only problem is he needs an interpreter. He was one of the few with some jump out there tonight. That goal from his knees was incredible!

my belief is starting to shift. seeing how stinky our defense is, any goalie would struggle... why does everyone just STAND there? it's mind-boggling. COME ON MIRACLE, i need a miracle.

rachel216 - come to the light - come to the light
you do have valid complaints about theo - but this D, at times, could make brodeur look bad too.

Has anyone noticed how much Mike Green is getting schooled defensively these days?
Perhaps he thinks too highly of himself and needs an attitude adjustment? Bruce should consider sitting him a game to make a point.

I am at a loss guys...got back from the game...they started off so well...all the folks around us were saying how jazzed they were playing energy wise at the start..then...

Green had an awful game.
Is Ovie hurt? His skating seems a little off...anyone else notice?

Anyway...we need a little adversity before April. Lets hope we learn. I think we can.

Just got home from the game. Haven't seen such an ugly game for a long time. It's hard to feel too optimistic afterwards.

Caps, please, at least make sure you win the division this year.

Not sure how the rest of you feel, but the "21 game salute" has been a disappointment so far......I was really thinking we woild be in our wheel house by now.....

This is our slump, every team has one. atleast we still have time to rally the troups and march into the play-offs.

clearly the sky fell tonight. i can't see this team ending up ahead of the NYI

the home record of 25-8-1 is in the crapper now

GMGM has lost his mind - he should have started the cloning of langway years ago

i think most of the D has been trying to force GMGM's hand - to get more help on D

anything less than 58 wins this year should be considered an utter failure

GMGM: "Bruce - what do we need!"
BB: "A defensive lobotomy"
GMGM: "How can that help?"
BB: "If they can't remember how they've played this year - they can only get better"
GMGM: "Good point - I'll go get the scalpel - you go scrub up"

So who were those guys who are always all like: "you guys are the worst fans! alarmists! calm down! we are awesome! we lose a couple games and you are think the sky is falling! take chill pill!"
Where are you geniuses now?
The sky is falling.
This team sucks.

Posted by: large23220 | March 3, 2009 8:33 PM

@large23220: We're right here. Sadly, this is the reason why people think we're all hype. That the "Caps fans" on here are bandwagon fans. You just proved them right by saying the team sucks. For the record, you are overreacting. Take a chill pill. The worst thing that could happen after they lose shouldn't be you going all postal. *rolls eyes* When they recover, we better not see you all "I love the Caps". I'll be the first in line to remind you of what you just said. For the record, Boston also lost recently.
