Poti Practicing (Updated)

The Caps are back on the ice, and defenseman Tom Poti, who has missed five games with with a groin muscle strain, is practicing with his teammates for the first time since suffering the injury in Pittsburgh.

Coach Bruce Boudreau said on Tuesday that he wanted to see Poti get through at least a couple of practices before pronouncing him ready to return to the lineup. So if he makes through today and tomorrow, it's likely he'll be ready to go on Saturday in Buffalo.

We'll see.

Alex Ovechkin, Sergei Fedorov and Viktor Kozlov are not out there. Ovechkin is still in Russia and Kozlov has been battling soreness in his sprained left knee. Not sure what's up Fedorov, but he could just be getting a rest.

A few quick notes from practice:

*Boudreau said he's hopeful Poti will be able to return on Saturday, adding that Poti's return will help him bring down Mike Green's minutes, which has become a concern. Green ranks fourth in the league in minutes played at 27:33.

*A young boy, who attended practice with his mom last season, held up a sign on the outside of the KCI glass reminding Boudreau that he had promised to take him to lunch. Well, Boudreau made good on that promise today, much to the delight of the boy and his mom. Boudreau just walked by the kid and his mom (and another mom and three other kids) and said, "You ready to roll? What do you guys want? And don't say steak."

Boudreau then led them out of the rink toward the elevator that leads to the mall.

*Boudreau also said he's noticed that Chris Clark, who missed almost all of last season with a groin injury, is starting to rediscover his form -- even if the captain's one assist in nine games doesn't illustrate that very well.

"The same with Nicky, if he gets that first goal, that first multi-point game he'll be off to the races," McPhee said. "I'm sure he wants to see that great speed he's had in the past. He's probably at 85 or 90 percent, he's not there yet."

*As for Ovechkin's return, there really is no updated timetable. I was told a few days ago that he was scheduled to come back on Sunday, meaning he'll miss Saturday's game. And that doesn't appear to have changed.

*Boudreau wouldn't say what's wrong with Kozlov or Fedorov. But he did say they'll play in Buffalo.

Glad to see Poti getting close. The caution is a good thing after last years issues.

As far as we know, we're still not expecting Ovechkin back until around Sunday, right?

Let's hope Poti's healed -- we could really use him right now.

Tarik, have you heard anything about Ovechkin? How is his grandfather doing? It sounded pretty dire initially... :-(

Glad to hear Poti is practicing - I'm looking forward to seeing him back on the ice.

Kozlov... sprained knee, could be 8 weeks to fully heal, and that would suck, but there you have it.

Yeah, we could definitely use TP to help clean up the holes in our defensive end..

Tarik,

Im really confused on Erskine getting the extended contract? Does this mean it allows Alzner more time in Hershey if needed? Or are there other plans for guys like Morrison/Jurcina basically anybody but Green on the Blue line?

Or is this saying they want more time for guys like Sloan and Lepisto???

Erskine hasnt showed me anything in 2 yrs... and Morrison is struggling alot so far?? Jurcina at least is playing more physical.. I just dont see what the Caps like in Big John????

I'm not comfortable asking what is up with Ovi's family. If he wants people to know, he'll tell us. He'll come back to us when it's all settled, and we'll soldier on in the meantime. We're not a one-trick pony by any means, and Ovi shouldn't be worrying about hockey or his team. As Ted said, family first.

Kozlov: aie, bad news. Well, he's got several days off to get it straightened out. Let's keep it from being a recurring problem, shall we?

Poti: Good news, glad to hear it.

From a previous thread: I'd still like to see a story on what the players think of some of the fan chants, "unleash the fury" in particular. What's it like to be on the ice and hear that?

Great news about Poti. He and Schultz are better than Schultz and Sloan as a combination. Not beating up on Schultz or Sloan, but two fairly unexperienced defenders as the second pairing is not the best option.

I usually try to catch a glimpse of practice on work days. Was off today, but wanted to get a skate in and check out practice. I saw the sign the kid had up for the promised lunch and was interested to see what the outcome may be.

I have been lucky enough to have, on very limited occasions, witness interactions of players and coaches with fans.

I love sports, mostly hockey. The main reason is that when I try to catch up on news in hockey, the news is about hockey! Other major sports cannot make the same claim.

Hence, Coach Boudreau's actions. Here's a guy that has enjoyed immense success and limelight. It didn't happen overnight. He had to be successful over and over again before the limelight shone on him.

What an ambassador for the sport! Think of the impact he is making. For all that thought Ted and George had lost their collective minds for bringing Bruce up, what do you think now?

Ovie may be the franchise. Ted owns the franchise. George guides the franchise.

Bruce is the personality of the team!

This team HAS personality.

ROCK THE RED!

Very true Boo.

So to get the ball rolling, what do you think of Brash? Overpaid or worth every penny?

He's a demon on the forecheck & he keeps teams very honest when we play them, so I'd lean toward worth every penny. He contributes with out having to drop the gloves every game, plus he's a leader. Just my $.02

The Caps are playing a little too well for us to yell for heads to roll, and it's too early to be talking about playoff scenarios.

Maybe Bruce can come give us more manageable griping goals/windows throughout the season to maintain a consistently high level of commenting.

@austinsteve: What, Mo's performance, Backstrom having gained weight and Ovie having just two goals in eight games isn't enough fodder for cries of "the world is ending"? Oh wait. I forgot Theodore's soft goals, Erskine and dumb penalties ....

I'm not worried about commenting yet. There's a lot of people who aren't even paying attention to hockey yet - football season is in full swing! I'm also not worried about people finding things to gripe about - it's human nature to find things to complain about, whether we're winning or not.

Posted by: kittypawz | October 30, 2008 6:48 PM | Report abuse

Maybe we can discuss any diet plans, weight loss regimes, or family recipes we may know of for Backstrom...

I think they signed Erskine to put the pressure on. We've got options in the bullpen and there aren't enought chairs to go around when the music stops.

You can think otherwise though :)

In Dallas Brashear picked a fight immediately after Dallas scored a tying goal late in the 2nd after we'd been lazy all period. The crowd stopped cheering the goal and everybody acted all bewildered about the fight(which Brashear clearly won). After that we played as hard as we did any time that night til the end of the 2nd. How much money is that worth?

This is off subject, but if you're looking to watch a little hockey, go to nhl.com and click on the NHL GameCenter link at the top of the page. You can get a free view of the Buffalo-Tampa Bay game. It is 3-1 Tampa, after the first period. Olie is in goal. Pettinger is also playing for the Lightning.

I caught the second and third periods of the Tampa versus Buffalo game. Kolzig looked fine. He seems to me that he's a little quicker, especially when he gets up from the butterfly position. Is he in better shape or is it my imagination? I also saw some of the game he played overseas. He looked fine in that game as well. He seems to have found his game through games, anyway. Good for him. I have nothing but the upmost respect for Olie on and off the ice. It was time for a change. I'm looking forward to his return to DC and how he fares should he get the start.

@wendel2

I like Brash, he's the only consistently present graybeard we've had over the last few years, yes? It'd be hard for me to let him go but we do have a lot of Bears banging on the door.

Wasn't there a story about him keeping things light in the locker room before the playoff games like a papa bear? Joking and playing tricks? Maybe I made that up. That's another thing hard to measure. A cheaper younger goon wouldn't have the street cred to pull that off. But again, how much is that worth?

Speaking of bears, my bro had Russian foreign exchange student roommates ("bear" with me). We had a number of cool "Russian" friends. One was on the Moldovan (not Moldavia, Moldova) national judo team. Those big Russians are total and complete mama's boys. Ovie's funk could last a while depending on how things go with his grandfather. Maybe another surrogate role only Brash can handle...

But like I know how Ovie and Brash relate!

Personally I like Brashear... not only he "enforces" but he plays good forechecking and sometimes even score.

But even if I didn't like him. We need him. Especially later in the season. We WILL NEED HIM. Unless you want Bradley to get his ass kicked every time (sorry Bradley, I like you but please don't fight again... or take fightin lesson or something....)

Posted by: mauree | October 31, 2008 1:42 AM | Report abuse

Every time Brash comes up like this I think back to The Hockey News article where a poll of active NHL players voted Brash in the top three of NHL enforcers for both fighting ability and playing skill. He may fit the "goon" definition for some of you, but I think we, as non players, have to stop and recognize that maybe the coaches and management staff might have a slightly better understanding of a given player's influence on the team. Failing to recognize that means you are not taking yourself very seriously and therefore please don't expect us to.

all the so-called experts are getting kind of annoying. what happened to all the semin-haters? you pick on JT when he's still getting acclimated to the team and vice versa, now Brashear?

if you want to complain about being non-existent in the playoffs, start complaining about the defense. They didn't do anything when the other team was messing with Huet, they made costly mistakes that cost us games. And defense is shaky now. They're not covering people like they should be.

I want to see all the people hating on Semin to come back on and see what you all have to say now.

Well Tampa woke up. Just in time to come here. Actually, I am also glad to see Kolzig play well. He is due a stinker though. How about on Nov 10th?

Would so love to have an indepth interview with Semin. But do not expect it to happen soonest. Love the guy, but he just does not seem comfortable in front of the camera. His post game interview the other day was great. Maybe if he does a few more of those he will start to feel better.

If you have not seen it, there is a Halloween spot on Caps page asking guys what professional athlete they would be. Fun to watch some of them pick on my boy Matt Bradley. Also, Schultz seems to have a strange sense of humor.

MNMNT:
I don't recall any real Semin haters. Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought there were just a lot of people like me who thought/think that he is one of the most talented guys on the team (and in the league), but get frustrated when he plays half-hearted or has tantrums and does things like throwing the puck. That all made him very inconsistent; he really needed to harness his tremendous potential and his attitude. I always chalked it up to maturity. But he has been pretty consistent since late last season. I think he is finally settling down/in and that his game has matured a great deal. He is now my DH's favorite player - I like to remind him that I was singing his praises years ago, before anyone was saying boo about him (not that I'd ever say "I told ya so" ... and no pun intended ;-)). I'm glad to see him coming into his own.

For the record, I was kidding about doubling Brash's salary and signing him to a five year extension. I have mixed feelings about him, but recognize his role on the team. I will be curious to see what happens with him next year (his contract is up then, isn't it?).

Posted by: Boo- | October 31, 2008 7:43 AM | Report abuse

@wendel2

Brash's line was one of the best vs. Philly in the playoffs. I remember Philly message boards saying, "when did Brashear learn how to play hockey?" Philly fans were impressed with that line.

You dont have to look at pts and goals. They controlled the puck, and wore down Philly in just about every game of the series. They also provide a spark for the scoring lines.

I remember several people complaining about Semin and his capabilities. Didn't someone say he had the brain of a rabbit? That, and then all the people that wanted to trade Nylander, and questioned Flash. Kozlov came up recently. Boo, I wasn't addressing you at all.

Then when we lost three games in a row, the sky was falling and people were questioning BB. Eight games in and people were throwing the towel in. I just don't get some of the people on here at all. Then you have Chief I mean Ken posting with four to five aliases and then pretending it's not him.

And then you get people like Jill with her hoity toity attitude, that because she worked for the Caps and then is now a STH that gives her superior intellect in her eyes and supreme fan status even though she's never played hockey at all, and the same goes for Ken aka Chief.

And I love all the old school fans, but I hate it when they post how long they've been fans for, or how long they've been STHolders for.

I just wish people would stop being so annoying.

Steve_R

I think Brash is worth every penny. He brings veteran leadership, aggressive forchecking, and unmatched toughness. I've seen guys trying to push, shove, and start trouble only to stop immediately and skate away when Brash joins the scrum. He is also very well liked in the dressing room. I remember him showing up at practice last year during the Caps great run wearing yellow laces and a tinted visor. The guys all got a big kick out of it, especially Ovie. Things like that go a long way to keeping the mood light during stressful times. These young kids need a guy like that. And when the gloves come off, you want Brash your side! He doesn't even have to throw punches. Sometimes he just grabs under their shoulder pads and shakes them into submission!

Ouch!!! What do you have to say about me, my friend! ;-)

I gotta say, I don't recall Jill being "hoity toity". Even if she has not played hockey, it does not mean that she does not know what she's talking about. I've never played (I know, shocking! ;-)) and I like to think that I know a thing or two about the game. Frankly, I would guess that most people here have not played (the same probably holds true to most fans of most sports).

I agree that it is annoying when people throw in the towel so quickly. I've been known to 'say it like it is' after a bad game, but I don't give up on the team. Frankly, I don't understand why some people have to be so negative all of the time.

You mentioned Flash - I was less than a fan of Flash last season and was not thrilled to see him sticking around this season. However, I have had to admit that he may have found his game this season. I hope he continues to surprise me.

By the way -- Brash showed in his fight against Barch why he is respected throughout the league. Barch isn't exactly a known fighter, and when they showed the replay of the fight you could see Brash waiting for Barch to drop the gloves and make a move towards him before he dropped his. To me he was giving Barch the chance to back out instead of forcing him to fight by dropping his gloves first.

I know it's not a big deal in the big scheme of things, but I noticed it and wanted to give a nod to his class even tho many people (not necessarily on this board) simply consider him a goon.

It backs up to the ticket windows. Lodge a complaint telling them you want the boardwalk fries back. I talked with the guy who did the kiosk last year and he wants it back as well. The other night he was at the BBQ kiosk. The complaint is with VC, not the Caps.

"The fastest I ever drove? About 160. Ovechkin and I were actually driving together on a highway at around 1 a.m. He was in his car, and I was in mine."

I wonder what Ted, GMGM, and Boudreau think about when they hear statements like this from their top players....and I loved what he had to say about Crosby.

GO CAPS!!!
