Poti pulled from warmups (updated)

Tom Poti came out for warmups, but when I looked up a few moments later, the veteran defenseman had been pulled from the ice. I don't want to speculate here, but it certainly is curious considering tomorrow is the NHL trade deadline.

Update:As of 7:34, there still is no word on Poti's status. He could be sick or injured. But maybe not. Stay tuned.

Is it possible that he's nursing an injury and didn't feel 100% and came off willingly, or was he actually pulled off the ice by someone else?

Posted by: Jordana20 | March 3, 2009 6:47 PM | Report abuse

OMG Poti is gonna be traded! jk

Posted by: rachel216 | March 3, 2009 6:47 PM | Report abuse

NOOOO

Not Poti, he is a FIRST line D-man!

Posted by: Wemiss21 | March 3, 2009 6:47 PM | Report abuse

eh?! I actually like Poti. I wasn't thrilled initially with the move to get Poti but McPhee and his boyz made the right call. Poti has looked shaky since he's been back in the lineup after his injury but overall I trust him more than anyone else defensively. He moves the puck well and he's aware of his defensive responsibilities.

Just dump Schultz please. I don't know if any team would even want him

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2009 6:48 PM | Report abuse

What?! NO!

Posted by: elicea | March 3, 2009 6:49 PM | Report abuse

Oooohhh, meme likey! I look at Poti as 3-4 d-man at best. Intersting!

Posted by: Leeguru | March 3, 2009 6:49 PM | Report abuse

Wemiss21: that's why other teams want him.. Schultz can't be traded because no team wants him.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 3, 2009 6:49 PM | Report abuse

WTH?

Posted by: ratgurl46 | March 3, 2009 6:51 PM | Report abuse

It's going to be funny when Crosby gets traded. Listening to XM, and they have been talking all day about how the Pens are better without him

Posted by: Leeguru | March 3, 2009 6:51 PM | Report abuse

i guarantee poti is not on the move. GMGM isn't going to move the caps only proven veteran defensmen.

Posted by: andy19 | March 3, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

Why is everyone freaking out? Maybe this is why Erskine is taking warmups because Poti is nursing an injury, as is Erskine...but Poti's is just worse

Posted by: rdy4all2000 | March 3, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

"Boudreau also said that John Erskine will take the warmup and "might" play. He wouldn't give a reason, but I'm assuming that means another defenseman is nursing an injury."

Guess no one read that part of Tarik's previous post?

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | March 3, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

i must trust GMGM, he will make the right decisions for us. GO GMGM! :)

Posted by: rachel216 | March 3, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Melrose said the Caps might be interested in Gerrin. But we can't trade a top D-man for a forward????? Can we???

We need another top 4 defenseman, we can't lose one....

Posted by: Wemiss21 | March 3, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Poti for Crosby?

I would HATE that deal

Posted by: Leeguru | March 3, 2009 6:53 PM | Report abuse

I don't get their various "signals." What does it mean when they pull Poti and, especially, when they do not use Nylander for so long? Is it hoping that Nyls will ask to be released or is it a signal to other teams that he is available or do we credit them with more strategic thinking than they they actually apply?

I feel bad for Nyls. It looked like he was doing well until his surgery and BB. There is one player who did not flourish under Boudreau--the only one I know of. I really think that in a different situation he would flourish. It looks like BB has given up on him, unless it is a technique he uses to motivate him.

Posted by: caraveli | March 3, 2009 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Eklund has Nylander to the Habs for Dandenault (unconfirmed)

http://tinyurl.com/ckuksk

Better than a bag o'pucks but barely. Biggest benefit would be the salary dump.

Dandenault = 1.75m
Nyls = 5.5m

Posted by: RicketyCricket | March 3, 2009 6:58 PM | Report abuse

Caraveli,

Nyls has a no-trade clause. So one theory is that if we refuse to play him, he would approve a trade.

The other theory is that you scratch him so that he can't get injured, which assumes that someone is interested....

Posted by: Wemiss21 | March 3, 2009 7:00 PM | Report abuse

A Eklund rumor is unconfirmed? I can't believe it...

Posted by: VegasCapsFan | March 3, 2009 7:00 PM | Report abuse

Poti may be part of a trade for a different blueliner who has more of an upside for what the Caps need. Perhaps Pronger??? Or maybe he is nursing a sore groin.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | March 3, 2009 7:02 PM | Report abuse

I have a feeling we're going to light it up tonight. I don't expect a shutout or anything but we're going to light the lamp a lot tonight. Just a feeling.

Pre-Trade Deadline Caps D Drinking Game!
Using our D as a screen to score: drink
Breakaway goal from someone misjudging a loose puck at mid-field: drink
Turnover in the defensive zone: drink
Deflection off a Caps player into our goal: drink
Delay of game penalty: drink
Allowing a garbage goal without punishing the scorer: drink
This game is null and void forever starting at 12:01 am Thursday March 5
These are the Hurricanes, they are not doormats, but we should be able to handle them.

austinsteve:
of course you must mean that the actual caps Dman that commits this 'party' foul - goes directly to the bench - chugs 12oz - then heads right back onto the ice - all in hopes of 'better' play?

Oh I thought my prediction was going to start early.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 3, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

I'm interested to see how this game goes. Watching at home due to illness. My rule is if you're too sick to go to work, you're too sick to go to hockey game. :(

Pretty funny that CSN just did a mic check during the intro. Oops.

Go Caps!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | March 3, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

No use speculating, but fun!

Except obviously for Boo...

GMGM could do nothing on trade day as far as we see. But behind the scenes maybe he's jacked up the price on a player like Pronger so that if the Bruins or Flyers want him they have to break their team to get him.

check, check, check.....

out of all the guys in our shaky D, Poti is one of the ones that I would not be happy giving up. we should get rid of guys like schultz and morrisson, who have shown no improvement whatsoever.

Oh hey, I responded to that Capt_Kirk on the other thread, just got home:

I said it could also be that if a Caps D man commits the foul it's a sign that he has perhaps partaken of a drink before stepping on the ice too, or maybe the scorer had a good buzz going. Whichever the reader finds most amusing or least offensive
:)

Posted by: austinsteve | March 3, 2009 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Bryan Burke on what it would take to trade Kaberle:

"The minimum would be this: a minimum of a first-round pick, a guy that can play on our team right now and a top prospect"

Tom Poti can play right now.

Posted by: large23220 | March 3, 2009 7:14 PM | Report abuse

I certainly hope this isn't about a trade unless we're getting a big time defenseman back. Whenever we loose Poti to injury our PK gets shot to sh!t. He's by no means glamorous, but he gets the job done defensively better then anyone else on the team.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2009 7:51 PM | Report abuse

Re: Poti. He may not be the best defenseman around, but he's damn near the best one in a Caps uniform. If we are trading him - IF - it better be for Brodeur or something else stupid like that. We need a defenseman, not "we have too many defensemen."

That said, in GMGM we trust. GMGM knows what he's doing. His mission: get us past the Flyers. Get other teams out of our heads. Who knows - maybe Poti went to GMGM after last week and said, "OMG we can't beat Philly!"

Posted by: EricCarr | March 3, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: EricCarr | March 3, 2009 7:57 PM | Report abuse

Been a long time since I've seen us score a true dirty goal. Not enough guys going to the net or taking the right kind of shots. I'd take a 2 pack of Laich stuffing rebounds so we can bring back the "go to the net..." quote.

neuvy didnt even see it.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2009 7:58 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy the kid was doing pretty well until the penalty shot. I think he got unnerved. This is one situation that Theo is pretty good at handling.

Please let's not stink tonight for the second consecutive game. I was especially concerned when Boudreau said that he was discouraged after last game.

By the way, doesn't Boudreau have any say in trades? Surely he knows what is needed to build that team better than anyone else.

Posted by: mauree | March 3, 2009 8:11 PM | Report abuse

EricCarr- I think Poti and a decent prospect and/or a draft pick for Pronger would be something the Ducks would do. They downgrade a little at the position, but Poti is cheaper and 3 years younger, and Pronger re-signing would not be a guarantee. Niedermayer is likely to retire, so they could use another veteran D with some type of captain experience to fill that void of losing Niedermayer and Pronger. I don't know, that's just the first thing I thought of when I asked myself who McPhee would possibly give up Poti for, considering his value at a position of relative weakness. I thought it must be another D, and it must be some sort of upgrade. I hadn't even thought of Clemmensen though, and I personally would like that better for us.

Laziest team in the nhl? maybe. Worst defensive team in the NHL who is in the playoff race? Absolutely. This team will have to score 5 goals a game just to win in the playoffs. And that offense-first defense be damned mentality comes from Boudreau.

Aside from Ovi's late goal, that's nine straight goals given up at home. The Caps need to tighten up.

saintex, you're wrong about the first one. that was all green's fault.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 3, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

The Caps can't win physical games, and when the refs put the whistle away in the playoffs, this is what every game will look like

Trading Poti for a standup defenseman would be awesome

When the refs put their whistle away in the playoffs it can only help us right now...not so much tonight but every other game taking 7+ penalties a night.

i blame this (and the fla game) all on WJS and his 'stretch run' posts!!

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 3, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Unreal - with this performance tonight put a few more guys on edge tomorrow and put them out there to be traded. Ok that was sarcasm but one guy chases a penalty killer while three other guys stand around and watch? I hope Carolina does what Florida did. This team's getting a good wake up call and obviously didn't get the message from the other night. This is pathetic. All of the sudden now they get a little pressure on the PP and they don't know what to do.

Take note Coach Boudreau - you see how effective a penalty kill can be when you ATTACK the high men at the points and all over instead of sitting in that RIDICULOUS passive box.

Posted by: Jonathan6 | March 3, 2009 8:21 PM | Report abuse

He shouldn't be a head coach, he should be an asst coach that works on creative playmaking. Thats his strength. He obviously cares not about defensive hockey in the least.

McPhee's been sitting on his hands all season proud as a peacock thinking he's got the Cup all wrapped up. He's overestimated his team and understimated their defensive problems. Now they're having a hard time scoring because teams maybe are figuring them out and being overly aggressive against the PP.

Blame Semin for that goal. He totally screwed up with the puck, he blew a chance to clear it and tahts what kept the play alive. That play is 100% Semin's fault for not clearing it when he had the puck with no one around him. Thats what boudreau gets for employing Semin on the PK. High risk player.

Then again cstanton...when you're down 4-0 I completely agree with semin trying to spring whoever was on the other wing there for a short handed chance. It eventually culminated in their goal, but down 4-0 you're going to have to try to make that pass.

This team may be soft but that goal was Semin's fault. He had the puck at the other team's blueline and failed to dump it, he tried to thread the puck thru another palyer and he failed, that led the play back the other way and they scored eventually.

Semin just scored. HE should be playing at even strength and on the PP, just take him off the damn PK. He doesn't make the simple clear, he gets too fancy and we end up paying.

Isn't it 3 out of the last 5 or something? Avs, and now the last 2 games.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

Wonder if Poti got hurt from that hit he took against the Flyers last week? He got blasted behind the net by Richards.

Posted by: geauxcaps | March 3, 2009 7:36 PM

Would seem odd to trade Poti. Boudreau called him his most reliable defenseman and even though he's been shaky since his return he's still better at 50% than half our defense.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 3, 2009 8:44 PM | Report abuse

He was at center already trying to make that play...I've seen him plenty of times just dump it from center and go for the line change on the PK. That time he saw both guys coming to him and our other forward streaking, didn't connect. We had our PK setup in the zone after that happened...Laich tried to dive to clear the puck and he didn't get it out. Boom, goal. Semin's missed pass at center was not the end all be all of how that goal got scored.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 3, 2009 8:45 PM | Report abuse

Actually the Avs game was 6 games ago. But I guess that's close enough for 3 out of 5 right?

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 3, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | March 3, 2009 8:48 PM | Report abuse

If Semin misses a play, does that mean the goalie runs to the bench and it's an empty net?

Or the d-men drop their sticks and hide in the corner. It's a team game, and the Caps lack a D-man to atone for a forwards mistake. Green included.

another embarassing home loss

Posted by: wendel2 | March 3, 2009 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Five goals on 20 shots--4 of them in one period. I rest my case!!!!!!!!!!! The most glaring hole is the lack of a stellar goalie and I am stunned that the GM is not making this a priority.

You can blame anyone you want, and I know many are at fault. But how do you think the game would be looking now if Brodeur, Backstrom, Mason, or Huet for that matter, had been in goal. It was after the penalty goal that the team unravelled, echoing Neuvy's looking more and more uncomfortable. If an experienced and great goalie held them scoreless for a period or two, the team could have found its rhythm and built momentum.

That's my take and I am sticking to it until we have a streak of 8-10 consecutive wins with our current goalies and/or make it through the first two rounds in playoffs. Then I will happily eat my words and crawl on my knees in humility.

Posted by: caraveli | March 3, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

I don't think many goalies at all would have had a shot at either of Eaves' goals. Those were straight top corner rips both of them.

Also even if we go on to lose tonight, our HORRIFIC play of late is a 6-4 record over our last 10 games. Time to panic indeed...

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 3, 2009 8:59 PM | Report abuse

I dunno, Detroit got thumped 8-0 the other day. Boston went through a rough patch as did San Jose a couple weeks back. It's a long season and teams will hit rough patches.

Posted by: ebolean | March 3, 2009 9:24 PM | Report abuse

I am not sure how to look at results. If you look at the last 6 games (not including today) we are 3-3-0 -- not good. If you look at the month of February we were 9-3-1--not bad. Month-by-month, February was better than Jan. and we have not had a month that really stunk.

But we used to have longer winning streaks--with the longest between the end of Dec. & the beginning of Jan. (7 games). Since then our longest streak has been 3 games at most.

However Detroit had at least two winning streaks of 9 games each and Boston 9 and 10-game winning streaks. Not sure what counts the most but it seem to me that the longer you sustain winning streaks the more consistency you show.

Bad game! Bad stretch! What is wrong with this team?

Okay, having Poti out with an injury and Theodore with the flu doesn't help.

If I were Nylander right now, I'd really be p'ed. Loging 3 out of 4. A healthy scratch. And, worst of all, the management would rather bring up a grinding forward, like Beagle, to play instead of him. When Kozlov was originally out, I had assumed the logical move would be to put Nylander in somewhere, like centering a line between Flash and Fehr.

At this point, I'll settle for the Caps winning their division (and hopefully going beyond Round 1 of the playoffs).

poti is one injury away from being worthless...why keep him here when we have Karl Alzner, who's absolutely better, sitting in Hershey? get rid of poti, get a forward and call down alzner today and problems solved
