Poti Says He'll Play

Defenseman Tom Poti was knocked woozy late in the third period when he accidentally was whacked over the head by teammate Brooks Laich's stick. Poti went to the bench briefly and returned to the game. He said he has a bit of a headache, but expects to be in the lineup tonight.

I hope to check in from the morning skate at Kettler. If I'm awake, that is. I might not get home until 4 a.m.

Appreciate the hard work - any word on Green's injury?

Thanks for the hard work, Tarik!

Hopefully the Capitals give you several more rounds of late nights!

@ Zack

According to the post-game comments from coach BB, Green is fine. He had a lot of problems with his skates, which kept him off the ice for a lengthy time in the third period, but he's healthy. He even skated a full shift around the final minute of the game :)

Tarik,

Sorry I'll miss you at the morning skate later today. Late night at work...we had inventory. Had to listen to the game on the radio, but glad to get the reception on 106.7.

Saw highlight of Ovie's breakaway. SICK!

Will be at the Phone Booth with the RED on. I may get a five-minute major before the game starts if I see any orange.

I love these guys!

GO CAPS!

No posts on Wednesday...will have no voice left.

Good to hear Poti expects to play. What's the news on Schultz?

Posted by: ultra | April 22, 2008 1:11 AM | Report abuse

Travis,
I've seen a couple of guys around campus with jerseys/hoodies/hats/etc on. Not many, maybe enough to start a pick-up game. I've made it up twice in the past season (Dec & Feb), but with the Caps getting attention, it got harder to reliably get Student Rush tickets. I also work full-time, so that interferes with driving to DC for the whole day. I'll make it to as many games as I can next season, but unfortunately my plan to set my schedule so I could make it to games didn't work out too well. Congrats on your acceptance, welcome to the cult! If you ever need somewhere to watch the games, let me know! I figure by then, I'll know every place in town to watch games and the Caps will be big enough that they'll actually put games on at B-Dubbs. Hams already will.

Let's go Caps!!!

Will be rocking the red tomorrow night! Just bought four tickets in the lower level for tomorrow night at what is called "rape" prices in the sneaker collecting world.

GO CAPS GO!! FRY THE FLYERS!!

And I need an opinion, What jersey to buy tomorrow for my red rocking? Semin has really shown up this series. I'm thinking Semin or Ovechkin, will be a tough choice and a game-time decision. Wish they'd have a Fehr one.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | April 22, 2008 1:24 AM | Report abuse

CCD,
Semin! I'm only completely partial. Everybody's got an Ovechkin jersey. La Lapin has been completely clutch in the series and deserves your love and affection. He's my favorite Cap, even when he's being La Lapin.

Just curious (and you don't have to answer), but how much? But even then, that's four seats that won't go to Flyers fans! Way to take one for the team!

Let's go Caps!!

The only reason I'm worried about getting a Semin jersey is that he's only got another 2 years left on his deal... oh well!! We'll hopefully re-up him again, and he's been SICK this series. Really has come to life

Jmu_capsgirl - hey, I live up the road in Winchester, about an hour away. I go to SU, and we're kinda starting a roller hockey thing, also am always looking for people to watch the game with. I got friends down there, so I might stop by once - if you're up for some hockeys lemme know.

Cool! I was up past there this weekend. I've got some friends in Winchester, too. I will confess to not having skated/bladed in years, or having played in longer. However, I will watch any hockey anytime, so if you need a cheering section for your games, let me know details! I'll be in H-burg all summer, hopefully getting some time between class and work to make it up and watch rookie camp.

My playoff tally so far:

- (Small) hole kicked in loveseat (Kozlov call).

- A hundred (100) instances of my girlfriend asking me, "Why do you get so worked up over a team?"

- Two (2) bottles of post-game melancholy Maker's Mark (not cheap on my salary)

- Three (3) sore throats from yelling and scaring my neighbors when I yell, "Neeeeeeeeeeeeeeklassssss!"

And I still believe. Mostly. I have lapses whenever the Caps' defense decides to picnic at center ice instead of playing correctly, but I... believe. I haven't been this happy for my long-suffering team since pre-Jagr.

I'm showing up a half-hour late to a grad class (I'm in PST land) for this team. In grad school, if you're late to or miss ANY classes, you need a good reason. I have a great reason. Go Caps!

In a nice gesture to the GREAT fans that are in Philly.... The Flyers organization will refund 15% of your ticket costs if you left with 10 minutes remaining in the 3rd.

The organization strives to put a great product on the ice, and if that fans arent happy, we will reimburse them.

The only exception is that you give back your orange Vengence Now T-Shirt so they can be re-used for next year, as our need for Vengence will only grow.

I am so proud of these guys. They have shown such amazing heart.

What in the heck has gotten into Semin? I always believed he had it in him, but man. The little retalitory thing was pushing it a little, but at least he was standing up for himself and his team.

Okay, we definitely need to make signing Green, Mo, and Laich a priority. Anyone else see an A in the future for Mr. Laich? He has really stepped up and shown leadership and amazing hockey smarts.

Ovie #1 NHL star last night. SEMIN #3 star last night :)

Just some fun facts for this morning:

Home teams have a 77-44 record in Game 7

The Flyers are 1-3 in Game 7s on the road.

Biron is 0-5 on the second night of back-to-back starts this season.

828,
ummm....yeah. 1-9:30. I'm going to be completely useless by 6:30 and probably hyperventilating by the time I actually leave.
Boo!, I believe Pierre McGuire is frightened because this means he has to go back to the Phone Booth at least one more time this season. He's worried we'll turn into blood thirsty savages and decapitate him and Milbury at center ice, or in the restroom. He's also frightened of the aura of amazingness emanating from the Capitals, particularly Backs & Lapin. It blinds him and he's afraid that his affection for the Penguinos will be replaced by Capitalism.

WOW!!! Check this out - from the Philly Inquirer (go here for the rest of the column - http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/17997499.html):

...

The Flyers' hard-earned advantage in this series? Gone.

The Flyers' momentum? Gone.

That muzzle they'd fastened around the Caps' bear of a Russian winger, Alexander Ovechkin? Gone.

The doubt planted in the minds of the young Caps as they were out-everythinged by the Flyers in the early going? That doubt is now firmly lodged in the minds of the Flyers.

...

There is no blaming the usual suspects - the goaltender or the officials - for this one. Marty Biron was great at times and good enough at others. The referees handed the Flyers a five-on-three opportunity in the third period. They squandered it.

By then, they looked like a beaten team. The story line of this series has proven to be pretty basic. The Capitals were young and inexperienced, and were not prepared for the intensity of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Flyers took advantage and built a three-games-to-one lead.

But the Caps started figuring things out. The question was whether the Flyers could close them out before they clawed their way back to even. The Flyers had three chances to do just that.

Now they're down to one.

"It's an opportunity we let slip away," Stevens said. "There will be no excuses [tonight]. We'll find out what we're made of."

The fear, for all of them, is that they found out last night. They have Game 7 to prove that's not the case.

I watched the first period online before going to bed. It was almost 1am and as my boss doesn't share my love of the Caps, I had to get up for work early. I taped coverage of a game on the one free to air channel that shows NHL games over here. It didn't start until 1.30am, the game is shown "as live", they just edit out the intermissions. However, there was no details as to what game it would be, so I gambled it would be the Caps and not MLT/BOS.

I checked this morning to see what I had recorded and luckily it was the Caps. I fast forwarded to the start of the second with the intention of watching the first couple of minutes to see if we would kill the penalty to Semin that over lapped periods 1 and 2. Problem was I couldn't stop watching, even when that little toe-rag Briere scored. I still thought we we were not dead.

Backstrom's goal was a thing of beauty and Ovie's break-away, lifting the leg before topshelfing it, was gorgeous. Needless to say I was late for work.

Putting plans into place to watch Game 7 tonight, either on the Net (Mauree, I'm looking at you!) or on the subscription channel I have. I think I may be late tomorrow.

The feed I watched seemed to be local to Philly as the commentators were very pro Philly (wasn't Vs or NBC). They almost exploded when Briere scored and hardly registered when the Caps scored. When Biron coughed up a massive rebound for Semin to equalise they were saying what a great save the initial stop was and how it wasn't really Biron's fault. He looked pretty much at fault to me.

BB deserves all the creidt in the world for putting the Semin/Backs/Laich line together. They were immense and dragged us back from the brink. Brashear continues to be solid and he, Davey and Eric worked their backsides off. The pressure and cycling that lead up to the equaliser was superb.

Not wishing to sound pessimistic but if the worst happens tonight and we don't advance then this team can have nothing but pride in the way they have fought, both to make the postseason and then to extend it to at least 7 games. I'm a very proud Caps fan today and will be one tomorrow whatever the result tonight.

Repaired the ceiling yet? I don't see the "frightening" comment as anti Caps. I see it as a compliment, i.e. its frightening how good these guys are for their age, it's frightening to think they will get better than this, it's frightening that these two (Backs/Semin) aren't even the biggest threats on this team. All that is pretty damm frightening for the rest of the league.

Steve R... not sure if I will have time to make a sign. I will basically have an hour or so to make it and paint the face. I NEED MORE TIME! For God's sake Steve, I'm a doctor not a boyscout!

We shall see - not sure what I was going to put on it... why o why did I give my last sign to the Philly fan - could have used it tonight.

I was thinking of a few others - BUT, I don't want to be too cocky with them. That is the hard part. Plus, where I will be sitting (as of now) there is no way I will NOT get on TV. Right next to the Budlight sign as the Caps come out of the locker rooms.

I hear ya, DrinkingPartner. I'll be watching the Caps tonight. I got a reschedule at work to see this one. I just wish I could go to the phonebooth. I was there for game 2, which left a bitter taste in my mouth and not from the Pilsner Urquell (sp?). I want to see the Caps win in person this year. I'll have to go to the Igloo to see the Caps win in Pissburgh. I couldn't get to a game in Philthy.

Best part of the game last night, the silencing of the crowd. Vengance Now will have to wait! Anyone see Ovie's presser, he still looks pissed, I think tonight they put away the Flyers early and take it too them.

Posted by: David | April 22, 2008 9:49 AM | Report abuse

@ David : I saw it and I was encouraged by it.

I think the thing that everyone, including us fans, have to remember is they haven't won anything yet. Gabby said it best after last nights game, its not even close to being over. Everyone needs to get VC rocking early, and the boys need to come out and put the flyers away early tonight.

Posted by: SuperCaps | April 22, 2008 9:55 AM | Report abuse

Anyone else not quite sure that Green's problem was his skates? He got smoked behind the net in the third period and seemed to have a hard time picking himself up. I didn't see him skate the late third period shift that someone else mentioned, but I hope it is true.

We need Green and Poti. The Flyers are on the run, but we can't afford mistakes on the back line that could give them some hope.

CHEER NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS TONIGHT!!!!

Wachovia shut down for most of the game... Keep VC rocking tonight, win, lose or draw...

Our boys deserve it for what they have given us all year... We should all be proud...

See some of you at practice and the game tonight...

JIM,

If you have comcast...and the correct features, there was a pop-up note in the corner of the screen last night that said that game 6 was going to be "on demand".

Hope that helps.

Great players raise their level when it counts the most. I expect the Caps to win games 6 & 7 and I expect Ovie to score at least 5 goals in those two games combined. I don't even doubt this, I know it will happen.

@Tokyofan

Hey, I was actually thinking of moving to Japan myself (and then i got a job, damn it), but one of my concerns was honestly the availability of hockey, in any form, over there. (I would still have gone in a heartbeat if it'd worked out, and now it'll be a tad longer til I go -- but it's okay, I'm only 22.)

How is it over there? We all know Ovie is world-reknown, but is he even on the radar over there? Anything? I doubt it, but I'd be fascinated to know.

I was also wondering how the local hockey was. I know that Tyson Nash and Jamie McLennan are playing over there (i think for the team in Tokyo, maybe), and was wondering if you'd had a chance to experience the Hockey of the Rising Sun, yet?

"Bring on the Pens" on the back

By the way I think I saw you and your sign pre-gaming it at Bar Louie on Saturday at one of the tables on the terrace. I was with a couple of buddies and pointed out your sign when we walked up. Keep up the hype. This year is so much cooler than past playoff series where our building was 30% Pens fans. I hope if we advance we freeze out the Pens fans in the next round just like we did to Flyers fans in this round.

Glad you're interested in coming to Japan. It's a great place. As for hockey here, I actually played on a team for a few years but then they folded! We had intense practices (heavy on the skating drills) and scrimmaged against other clubs but no league play. Hockey is a niche sport here and hard to find. Ovie would only be known by the few Japanese that play. There is a pro Asian Hockey League with a few ex-NHLers involved. I caught a game this year and it was fun to watch but the play was sub-AHL level. Also, lots of Japanese universities have teams and they skate very well. Their conditioning is great and they understand the game - but there's very little checking (and everyone bows at the end of the game).

Here's a link on the pro league: http://www.alhockey.com/

I know it is hard for us to comprehend the Flyers fans booing last night. Especially since they have been so stellar at home for the last two months. But if you think about it it makes perfect sense. Philly is not a very enjoyable place to live and most everyone is miserable. That is why they desparately need their sports teams to win. It replaces all the misery of everyday life. So when the home team loses (Eagles/Flyers/Sixers/Phillies sure don't have great track records for winning) it reminds the fans of their loser lives and they have to lash out. There is no other sports town like Philly. They eat their own. Caps fans will cheer to the end. But I have to give them props on one front. At least they care. LA is the most apathetic sports town I have ever seen.

Habs are #1 seed so they play the lowest seed left after the first round, which would be the Rangers in the #5 position when the Caps win. Leaving the two middle seeds #2 and #3 to go at it...

Walking towards the gate for my flight, I was behind a couple and the woman had a sombrero hanging around her neck. A RED sombrero. Not something you expect to see in Atlanta. I immediately called all my friends and told them not to worry.

I'll be up in 433 or 429 tonight. My seats for the playoffs are 433, but I bought a block of seats for my family in 429 and might switch back and forth.

@Tokyo Fan

I guess that's both a little expected and a little surprising. With the overall western influence, and amount of westerners there, I'd figure that there'd be decent development to get them closer to AHL. But then again, the AHL is a good, good league.

And "Let's Good Luck Caps" ? Lol. At least, that's what my sub-par translation tells me. I know that ganbarimasu is "good luck." Kind of like, "tesuto wa ganbarimasu yo" -- Good luck [on the] test!

...also, don't forget your 8:00 am tee time tomorrow with the Sens!

Everything that's been said about Clark and Pothier is not encouraging. Pothier is concussed and Clark is not making headway in his skating, or something.

Nylander, on the other hand, just maybe, maybe make it in if the Caps survive long enough. I don't know if that means they'd have to make it to the finals or just to next week, but he sounds like he's actually healing, as opposed to the other two.

We'll see Clark and Pothier next year.

I'm at the Kettler Complex... Here is a good sign...

Hi, my name is Vengence...

Do you need a fourth?

Posted by: JSchon | April 22, 2008 11:28 AM | Report abuse

Clark's shoulder still is suffering from a concussion so stop asking that question for the millionth time.

Ovie's breakaway last night led to one of the greater man hugs in history. Can't wait for tonight.

If I had the time I would blow up a picture of the Donald with the playoff beard with "Who wants a taste?" Cote surely doesn't.

I kinda still like "First in Choking, Worst in Teeth"

JSchon's quote would be funny!!!

Just scored two tickets!!!! I am so there!

Everyone going to that game tonight better not have any lungs left. I'll be down here in sunny Florida sending warmth up your way with a Caps contingent.

If you thought Verizon Center was loud the last couple of times..I'm putting a challenge out to all fans to make it even louder. I don't want you to be able to even hear yourself screaming.

I'm 31 and the last OT game winner I saw for the Caps was Todd Krygier in OT in Game 2 of the Conf. Finals against Buffalo in '98. Before that - I was sitting front row and remember Dale Hunter pointing his stick out for Larry Murphy to lead him on a breakaway in Game 7 back in 1988 - the rest was history.

Time to finish the comeback tonight. Enjoy it. Let's Go Caps :) DROP THE PUCK ALREADY!!!

Think I am going with this:

"Vengeance Later..Golf Now"

Or - JSchon is onto something:

Hi, My name is Vengeance...
What's your handicap?

OR

Hi, My name is Vengeance...
Can I drive the golf cart?

@ FRICKN...

'Orange with a yellow streak' is hilarious!

Going alone w/ my single ducket. Any good suggestions on where to grab a bite? I'd like to switch it up.

@ #94 : I found the "Vengence Later - Golf Now" one creative

Posted by: SuperCaps | April 22, 2008 11:39 AM | Report abuse

Ok let me try that again -

'Orange: Red with a yellow streak' is hilarious.

Posted by: kenwood | April 22, 2008 11:39 AM | Report abuse

OR?

What is Vengeance's handicap?

Posted by: 828 | April 22, 2008 11:40 AM | Report abuse

@Josh
At this point don't care who we face, just want to face someone (every team in our division is hoping we loose) you can bet on that.
LET'S GO CAPIES!
@Roger and Kazistan
That is my favorite one so far......
"JESUS SAVES......BUT OVECHKIN PUTS IN THE REBOUND!!!!!"

@ Kim on Travel in AL
Your more than welcome to come and watch the game with us down here in Gulfport. We will have oour own version of a "Red Out" going while watching the game on the dish!
LETS GO CAPS!
Score early and often......we need a no stress game!

No chance for Pothier or Clark to come back. Nylander only in S - CUP finals. HOWEVER, Karl Alzer may be available soon and the way our D keeps getting injured, he may be needed. Calcary Hitmen are down 2-0 and he still needs to sign an entry-level (which has not been too hard for GMGM) but he would make instant impact!

828, gotta meet up tonight

Posted by: fat jack | April 22, 2008 11:44 AM | Report abuse

@husky hockey
Go to the Texas BBQ place (Capital Q?) in Chinatown (right near the Starbucks). Get the beef brisket. Go early and then get to your seat and then scream your head off. GO CAPS!

@Huskey Hockey my favorite place to eat before CAPS games in D.C. was Fado's - they have the best beer battered chicken fingers around - plus New Castle on tap!!
Does it get any better than that???
Wish I was in D.C. - have to suffer with the versus channel tonight here is Myrtle Beach! Cheer loud for me!!!

@828

OOOOOOOOOO! Will you please, please use my Vengeance later ... Golf now idea?? I was telling my girlfriend about it last night and she LOVED it, but unfortunately, we won't be at the game tonight. You'd be scoring a fellow Caps fan MAJOR MAJOR points if you make that sign for me! ;-)

Please let me know if you decide to do it - your last sign was terrific!

Posted by: NoCountryForCapsFans | April 22, 2008 11:53 AM | Report abuse

@Tokyo Fan

Appreciate the suggestion. Will definitely be there early and I plan on having no voice about halfway through warm-ups.

Posted by: Husky Hockey | April 22, 2008 11:53 AM | Report abuse

HuskyHockey: Capitol Q at 707 H is pretty good barbecue (go with the brisket) and they serve Shiner Bock which is lucky beer because I was drinking it for game 5.

Posted by: uncatim | April 22, 2008 11:56 AM | Report abuse

Husky - enjoy it (the Q and the game). I'm countin' on you. GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: tokyo fan | April 22, 2008 12:23 PM | Report abuse

@828

How about a variation of the Vengeance Later - Golf Now sign.

Just have a normal Vengeance Now sign and draw a red line through Vengeance with a handwritten Golf next to it.

Posted by: Go Caps Go | April 22, 2008 1:37 PM | Report abuse

I really like the Orange is just red with a yellow streak sign message -- very creative and is based in the truth, both scientifically and metaphorically.

My favorite sign I have seen this series though is the Hip Hip Huet sign -- I think that is a great one...
