Poti Tweaks Groin (Updated)

Defenseman Tom Poti played only five shifts before leaving today's game with a strained groin muscle. I'll try to get an update on his status after the game.

Update:Poti did not return to the game and is day-to-day with a groin muscle strain.

The team is off tomorrow, so there may not be an update until Monday.

Yeah, whats the word on Poti? Maybe thats why Green is getting all that T.O.I if they are down another d-man. He just needs to be carefull with the puck.

This group has been making one great comeback after another all year. I know they have it in them to do it again. Isn't that old addage "worst lead in hockey is a THREE goal lead"?

I would curse and scream about how can Nittymaki be playing this well, but then I remembered 2006 and well. I guess the MVP of the Torino Olympics men's hockey tournament can probably play pretty well. Not-so-fun fact about him, he was the first pro goalie to score in OT. According to Wikipedia, "Niittymäki scored a game-winning, empty net, overtime, shorthanded, unassisted goal on April 11, 2004 versus the Hershey Bears. The game ended 3–2, with Niittymäki recording 32 saves as well, which finished the 12–0 Philadelphia season sweep of the Bears."
And there's the problem. He's a Bear killer. Our team? Mainly Bears. &@#$%!!!

Boo- when the boys come back and win this, tales of this game will be told for years to come.

Posted by: tURBO8 | December 20, 2008 2:56 PM | Report abuse

Why is it that the Caps can only win 5 games in a row? Maybe we will win the next 5 games, because I really don't see Nitty giving up 4 goals today. I have my fingers crossed, but...

Missed the first period. Unfortunately got to see the second. What is up with all of the wimpy pass attempts? Hope they turn it around in the third. Would at least like to avoid getting shut out.

Carolina and Boston are tied. Go Boston. In regulation, please.

(Tongue-in-cheek)- Does BB start Varley against the Rangers? Wonder if GMGM has already driven up to Hershey and his hurridly throwing Varleys clothes into an over night bag and pushing him out the door.

Can Varlamov be here by Saturday?

Just like last year's playoff series: Capitals are a better team but can't finish. I would trade 10 wins against Columbus, NY Isles etc. for one against Philly.

This sucks!

Posted by: elicea | December 20, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

I absolutely L O V E the way The Flyers execute their power play. Jam the crease! Jam the crease some more! Harrass the goalie. It's certinally not "Pretty," but it's OH, So EFFECTIVE. No high - lite, scintillating passes. Just in - your - face hockey. That's the way it's supposed to be played.

does anyone else think those Flyer jerseys are god awful ugly?

Posted by: HBFan | December 20, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

I would assume the only reason that Green has logged so many minutes is that they have to fill in for Poti getting hurt.

This is a clear example of the injuries coming home to roost.

Annnndddd- boom, there's Jose's third.

wow this is a horrible game. Lets just pray they get through this without anymore injuries.

Posted by: HBFan | December 20, 2008 3:18 PM | Report abuse

Johnson 3-13
Theo 2-8

Nitty 1-41

sheesh, our goaltending is not good enough period.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 20, 2008 3:18 PM | Report abuse

All right... the mission now is to finish healthy. Don't care if they score 7 or 8 just don't get injured, regroup, and prepare for next game.

Posted by: mauree | December 20, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

That's it, I'm turning this off. What a disgusting game. Can't finish even though they are dominating, our best looking goaltender of late is in Hershey, total collapse in the third, and Jose has let in another 3 goals... What is his save percentage going to look like after this game?

Posted by: isaacc7 | December 20, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

See you all back here on Tuesday, when hopefully we can do a little better on the scoreboard against the Rangers. Tuesday at 7PM on CSN (and CSN-HD, but only in widescreen, not HD).

Posted by: saintex | December 20, 2008 3:29 PM | Report abuse

I think we are seeing our glaring deficiencies today.

Defense and goaltending.

I know Giroux is not a D man but did you see him get undressed in the 1st goal?

Flyers 2nd goal, who didnt the D close the gap??? They gave Carter room and he took a great shot.

Green is brutal on the d side of the puck.

What do you mean can't be drunk in an afternoon game? Guess I better put down my beer.

Hope Ovi is just out because there is no point further risking the machine in this one.

Guess we were due. Maybe a good tush kicking is what they need. Hope they do not forget how this game feels for a while.

The reason I said Go Boston, is that I really want us to at least have home ice advantage this playoffs. With our goaltending situation, I think that winning the Southeast is our best bet.

My daughter just yelled that Hartnell made it good for all the fans that threw their hats.

Hell, right now I bet GMGM is already unloading Varly's gear at Kettler. Surely the team is coming home before the 23rd.

Posted by: Kim-3 | December 20, 2008 3:32 PM | Report abuse

What a disaster of a night huh... I actually do blame Johnny... the first two goals were softies, and happened right when we had the most pressure... lost all momentum, twice. Hard to come back from that. Then Green did the rest... but I don't blame is as much, he had to cover for Poti.

Anyway, give some credit to the Flyers, who lately play like Rocky... get a lot of punches early on, then they grow on you and win.

@Elicea-

Couldn't agree more. There is still al long way to go in the regular season. Cant get too upset or be too happy. There is another game on the horizon.

That however does not excuse the horrible play of Jose' and Mike Green. Green was turning it over left and right for the 3rd game in a row. Theodore is just not even close to being fundamentaly sound or in the right position to make saves.

I DO believe that had a couple of those in the first gone in, we would all be saying how great the boys played. Johnnie just couldn't get into a rythem.

It's tuff to get into the flow if Johnnie is only seeing 13 shots.

This is the game where we are reminded of our goaltender situation. Johnson has been a backup his entire career, and Theodore is possibly the worst goalie ever to fall out after a vezina, even if its been a while.

our D played out of position tonight many times. I only watched the third period (when it was only 0-3) and saw so many mistakes. I have no idea why they threw away the third period. Nittymaki stellar in the first? who cares, we have no excuse for that third period.

remember people, the San Jose Sharks got pummelled 6-0 the other day by Detroit. their season is not over, and neither is ours.

@lamplighter

I agree about Theodore and Green. Both were horrible.

I think Green's shoulder is hurting more than he is letting on. If such is the case, he needs to sit out until he is 100%. He is just hurting the team.

I'm slowly losing my patience for Theodore. What was it? 4 goals in the 3rd? Just pathetic, to say the least.

hahahaha that is hillarious! Breaking out the Myth Busters is comedic gold!

The guys have been whistling past the grave yard with these injuries all year. I think we all knew that at some point it was gonna catch up with us. Tonight it was just one of thoe nights when the roof caved in. Poti goes down, Green has to play too much, Johnnie sees 13 shots, we hit posts and not twine....and so it goes.

I blame Boswell in the Post. No one has written about this team all year...today he puts a column in and this happens.

Stupid Boswell! Tell him I said that Tarik!

Backs didn't play most of the 3rd pd. Of course the idiots Joe B and Locker never mentioned it. All they said was that it looks like 1 more player was missing but never made the effort of figuring out who it was.

@ windjammersouth:

You are not a Caps fan. You can't say "we" anything when talking about this team. You only show up to make negative comments after losing - thats not being a fan, it's being obnoxious and trying to incite a reaction. Please, go home to your mother where you belong.

As far as the game, it was disappointing we couldn't get any shots IN the net. The D and goaltending continue to be weak. Mike Green and Jose Theo continue to be not worth the salaries we are paying them. ShaMo, I love him but not impressed - he's been taking some stupid penalties this season. Ovie was, as usual, a bright spot - as was Brash's beating of Cote, even though that didnt help us gain any points. It was still satisfying to see him land all those punches.

So let me get this straight...johnson has his first bad game in about a month (plus nursing hip) and this board craps all over him in terms of being able to tend for us moving forward? Dispicable. That said, he did basically lose THIS game for us. It's just sad. We came out so incredibly strong and got nothing to show for it. Then the hockey gods took it to us for our inability to score in a major way. Theo was rotten. Green simply gave up on the carter shorty and the rest is history. I'm so SICK of these injuries. We play every game with five defensemen. Awful. Can't win that way. And semin not playing changes our entire offense. Silver lining? Brashear and another great game from alzner and juice

Posted by: MTB7 | December 20, 2008 4:08 PM | Report abuse

@HBfan- if you pay attention, he wont go away. Everyone knows he is retarded, so we dont mock the retard. Thats not cool. We just let him sit there in his corner, like a little baby throwing things, pooping in his diaper and struggling to get attention. Every now and then you turn and say, "oh look. did the little baby poop his pants?" and then you put him in the crib for a nap.

Johnson has played 2 bad games in a row. This was a huge game. Every player came out to play in the 1st period except Johnson. He's a good backup but we can't rely on him as our starter in the playoffs.

Posted by: VegasCapsFan | December 20, 2008 4:10 PM | Report abuse

@MTB

uhm...johnson's whole career has been as a backup. it's really not all to hard to see that he was playing on a hot streak. of course, i would've left BJ in, but he left in some softies.

Posted by: richmondphil | December 20, 2008 4:12 PM | Report abuse

when you set out to out-punk a bunch of punks, you will often get punked yourself. Same thing happened in the playoffs last year.

For the Caps to consistently beat the Flyers, they must beat play a Caps game, not a Flyers game. Philly is too good at a scrambling game. The Caps used to have trouble with the lowly Darcy Tucker Toronto teams for the same reason, until they got the clue.

Bruce, please give them a clue.

Posted by: perspective6 | December 20, 2008 4:13 PM | Report abuse

regarding Backstrom-

I would assume that he had another migrane attack. Probably that and BB didn't see the point of pushing him if he wasn't 100% at that point.

@mtb and vegas- I have been trying to defend Johnnie all game. I don't think it was a matter of poor play as much as it was the inabillity to get into a flow or groove. Nost goal tenders will say that once they get a couple hits or big saves, they settle in and see the game better.

Doesn't excuse the complete collapse in the third, but at that point I think the collective attitude was aww "F" this game.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 20, 2008 4:16 PM | Report abuse

brutal game. Just brutal.
Flyers a really good team. They're big, physical, and skilled. THey take the body all the time.
BUT THE CAPS have GOT to CRash THe FRickeN Net! FOr christs sake, crash the net and bang it out. Thats the difference: The Caps (minus Ovie, Brash and Bradley) play soft and don't want to get physical. THey won't occupy the crease, they all hang back and take blistering shots. THey just don't change things on the fly to compensate for their opponents play. The Flyers should have lost the game in the 1st period. They got a whiff of fate on their side.
SOmetimes, thats all you need.

Posted by: oo7 | December 20, 2008 4:16 PM | Report abuse

the last image in my mind of Backstrom on the ice was him dumping the puck in at center ice and taking a big hit against the boards. I wonder if it had to do with that.

It is just one game. Yea it sucks today but tomorrow we can focus on the next game. We do need good goaltending.

Posted by: vik191 | December 20, 2008 4:32 PM | Report abuse

Regarding this goaltending situation.

As has been mentioned earlier, if Johnson had made the save on Philly's first two goals, the game would be much more different. But he didn't, and we can't do anything about it. It's just how it goes sometimes. Every goaltender has there bad games, and sometimes, even stretches of bad games. All we can do is watch and hope the team in front do their job. Unfortunately today, that was not the case.

For Theodore, while giving 4 goals in one period is nothing short of mediocre, I can't be too angry at him. By the time he came in for Brent, the team in front looked as though they've already given up. You could see by the way they were playing the puck, and how they marked Philly's players that they just didn't care what happened, anymore.

I don't really think it's all that good of an idea to bring Varlamov up. While he played stellar in his first two NHL games, he is still 'unseasoned'. He's still not used to the North American style of hockey. Reading Bruce's and McPhee's quotes saying Varlamov gets so fatigued after each game was a very good indication that the kid is quite not ready to handle the work load of a #1 netminder.

I have the Charlie Brown Xmas special recorded and decided to turn it into a drinking game to ease my pain. Here's how it goes:

Charlie Brown Drinking Game:

Lucy does/says something mean: drink
Charlie Brown says something derogatory about himself: drink
Snoopy gets in a fight with Woodstock: drink
They play that weird trumpet sound in place of an adult’s voice: drink
Linus has something insightful to say: drink
Sally asks for way too much from Santa: drink
Peppermint Patty and Marcy give off a “strange” vibe: drink
Charlie Brown gets teased/insulted by the other kids: drink

Ok, just got done watching the game on the DVR. A few things and then I am out of here. First, Johnson and Theodore need to figure this crap out. They are both playing horrible. Anyone that has played and then coached hockey they will tell you that the team begins with goaltending. When the team does not believe or trust in their goaltending they play differently. If I were Boudreau and GMGM I would take them into an office at Kettler and tell both of them that they need to figure this out. If they are injured come clean and say their injured, if their not than they better start playing hockey, NOW!!!!!

@windjammer: I skimmed through and say that you said was Ovechkin was hurt because he wasn't playing. Stop being an idiot on these posts and putting out information as if it were true. We actually get eyes on information from people so some believe your junk. OV WAS NOT hurt, he was on the ice after your post with 2 minutes left. He wasn't being played because the game turned into a retro game and the Caps were losing too badly to have OV on the ice.

Puckguru: You talk about toughness and how the Caps won't win one until they get it. Also that the Flyers are tough and they crash the net. BLAH BLAH BLAH. The tough teams, as far as bruisers are concerned, do not win Stanley Cups anymore. Those teams stop winning in the early 80's when European players starting coming over and showing the Canadiens how to play the game. You trash the team constantly, cheer for someone else please, just like you did last year at this time. You probably latched on to our beloved Caps in March when the run to the playoffs started. The Flyers are not a better team than the Capitals. They had a crap goaltender have a hot day, PERIOD!

Posted by: big1timer | December 20, 2008 5:12 PM | Report abuse

I don't understand the "Don't blame Johnson, he couldn't get into a groove" excuse. Are you telling me that it would actually be better to give up more shots on goal so our goalie can "get into a groove?" I'll tell you how they get into a groove, BY STOPPING THE EFFING PUCK! They need to stop the pucks that come at them, weather it is 4 or 30. That is their job. I understand that it's difficult, I understand that you can't stop all of them, but a good goalie stops 90%+, we don't have anyone like that right now...

Posted by: isaacc7 | December 20, 2008 5:24 PM | Report abuse

My final thoughts...In a game where the flyers scored 7 goals, a few interesting "evens" in the plus/minus column:

Alzner (24 mins) - even
Steckel - even
Laich - even
Fehr - even
Brashear (only 7 mins) - even

...and then there's Collins who was +1! Our two grinder lines were by far the best for us tonight. Working all game and downright dominant in the first. Backie has had a couple dud games in a row now. Love Backie but he needs to pick it back up. KILLS NOT HAVING SEMIN ON THE ICE.

@ perspective

You are completely right. It seems that Philly just has a way of messing with the Caps' heads. They rattle our guys before they've even done anything, in a way that very few other teams seem to be able to do. Not even other former Patrick Division rivals get to the Caps this badly.

I bet every coach has said it at some point: "Play your game."

Flyers and Caps are pretty evenly matched..sure, half the game the Caps outplayed philly but the other half the Flyers outplayed the Caps. So you cant really unequivocally say they Caps are better than the Flyers.

This game really showed something..take away a guy like OV and What are we left with? A team with no real identity and bad goaltending

Posted by: rdy4all2000 | December 20, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

A couple of observations on the game today:

1, The Caps are brittle as anything. I'm tired of watching guys go down and be unable to finish.

2, I'm tired of watching Mo be out of position and either get beat badly or take a stupid penalty.

3, Won't be too harsh on Green because he's hurt and trying to do too much.

4, Collins played a solid first few games, but it seems to me that he's struggled lately. Probably because he has to play too many minutes.

5, I'm tired of watching Nylander mail it in. The guy just skates in circles and gets knocked off the puck or makes a bad pass to the other team.

That said, today was just not their day. In the first period when they kept coming up empty on all those scoring chances, and the Flyers score on their second shot of the game, you knew it wasn't going to end well. It really seems like the Caps put 60 minutes worth of effort into the first period, and had nothing left for the rest of the game.

tear Johnny and JT up, but the real culprit was the D. they left both goalies out to dry way too much. our D was really bad. and who was the worst: Mo-Green. no goaltending. Johnson let in 2 lame goals that took us out of the game. was there a NHL quality legitimate goal scored today? what i saw the Fyers score were weak goals. Three-or-more managed to live up to his reputation in only 1 period. Johnson was lame also. This had best change in New York on Tuesday and I have no reason to think it will. Varmalov will be back sooner than we think. its really a battle for backup right now, Varmalov will be the starter before the end of the season.

I won't try to defend Theordore overall because he has definitely not lived up to his contract or the billing of a #1 goalie in any way. However, I don't think he should get too much finger pointing today. We mailed it in in the third, he didn't have a chance. Two of the goals were because we refuse to clean out people in front of the net and two of the goals were nice passing plays that he didn't have a prayer on.

The dumbest / most ignorant post here.

Make sure you tell the Ducks (most fighting majors) to return their Stanley Cup.

I can't believe not a single post asking why the rookie goalie was sent back down ??

I applaud the loss, Caps GM is an absolute classless individual.

If it's not broke, DON'T fix it.

Philly has team toughness, Caps have better skill but can't compete when it's on the line, great regular season entertainment and that's it.

Oh the famous Cheef has reared his brainless head. Did you earn the name Cheef through earning rank in the military or did you earn the nickname because people sarcastically refer to you as Cheef in person? Or did you just forget how to spell Chef? Explain what the post was so dumb.

You don't think Johnson's 2nd weak goal ended the game?

You don't think that weak goaltending brings a team down no matter what level of talent is in front of them?

You don't think Johnson and Theodore should be pulled on the carpet by their bosses?

You don't think windjammer is an idiot for putting injury reports out as gospel?

You don't think puckguru and his constant slamming of the team isn't annoying? Even when they were on a 5 game winning streak he had dumb things to say.

Now I see why stupid posts are compared to past Cheef posts.

Posted by: fanohock1 | December 20, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse

Ya, just ignore the point about the Ducks.

Ignore how making changes to a winning combination is stupid.

Forget today, the big picture is clear, Caps are well built to entertain as a regular season team, that's it.

These guys are nowhere close to contending for a championship and they will NEVER succeed with the same front office.
