Practice cancelled today

The Washington Capitals cancelled their practice that originally was scheduled to begin at noon today, but Coach Bruce Boudreau and players will be available to the media at that time. Check back later this afternoon for video of Boudreau's news conference, plus reaction from Game 4 and a look ahead to Friday's Game 5 against Montreal from the players' perspective.

Have a nice rest, boys. You've earned it. And, be ready for tomorrow night. There is a wounded animal out there that needs to be put out of its misery.

Bring on the negative comments about practice being cancelled. Just know that we don't know what is going on, whether the team met, or anything else.

Fantastic win, once again. C'mon Game 5.

Well deserved. Enjoy the rest. Let's not have a repeat of what happened against Buffalo in game 5 back in 98. End it tomorrow!

Their flight from Montreal got diverted to BWI last night so they didn't get home until really late considering they had to arrange last second transportation from BWI in the at one in the morning. I think that had something to do with practice being canceled.

I meant "from BWI at one in the morning"

sorry, but the suggestion to take Noobs off the top line is just SILLY!!! And Flash should sit. Wasting a lineup spot so far.

When asked if Game 5 is his last game as a New Jersey Devil.

"No. Because we're going to win tomorrow," Kovalchuk said.

And that's why he is the man. (Bring on the Kovy hate, which seems to be so ingrained in this blog!)

And before someone asks, the flight got diverted because of heavy fog at Dulles.

I know it is an off day, and everyone is sick of the Crosby comes up big in big games argument. I just read that in another TSN thread. That forced me to dig up the numbers from last year's finals because Crosby was ineffective is my estimation. The stats prove just how bad he was when the games were their biggest.

Skaters Tm GP G A PTS +/- PIM TOI PPG PPA SOG SPCT
1 Malkin Pit 7 2 6 8 0 29 20:10 2 2 24 8.3
2 Talbot Pit 7 4 2 6 4 14 16:35 0 0 14 28.6
3 Zetterberg Det 7 2 4 6 3 7 22:15 1 2 23 8.7
4 Franzen Det 7 2 2 4 -1 2 19:27 1 1 20 10
5 Rafalski Det 7 1 3 4 3 0 21:44 1 0 5 20
6 Letang Pit 7 1 3 4 -2 0 19:09 1 2 11 9.1
7 Kennedy Pit 7 2 1 3 2 0 12:50 0 0 17 11.8
8 Ericsson Det 7 2 1 3 1 4 16:04 0 0 8 25
9 Staal Pit 7 2 1 3 0 2 18:20 0 1 17 11.8
10 Fedotenko Pit 7 1 2 3 3 0 15:43 0 0 15 6.7
11 Crosby Pit 7 1 2 3 -3 2 18:39 0 1 16 6.3

The numbers are a little out of whack but if you know the typical stats you can figure it out. This shows that Crosby was a virtual no-show for the Finals last year. Just as I thought, they got to the Finals because of him but won without much help from him at all.

Mike Green flat out said they only won because of him. I'm not denying the retarded saves Marty, Rask, or Miller have made so far, but Varlamov last night through the first 2 periods was outstanding.

Posted by: rademaar | April 22, 2010 11:54 AM

The fog was insane last night. I stepped outside to have a smoke before bed, and I couldn't even see to the end of the block- which is about 50 yards. It was creepy, but awesome.

Posted by: Fro_ | April 22, 2010 12:18 PM | Report abuse

Fog WAS crazy. In our area (Calvert county) it was just as thick. I was out at 3:00a and couldn't see 15 feet. But the bull 1/2 mi down the road was making happy? noises to the cows and it was creepy.

Posted by: jdhoover | April 22, 2010 12:23 PM | Report abuse

I was looking more at the Shot stats. I think I don't like way they keep them. I understand only counting shots that hit the goalie or net, but shouldn't there be a list of attempts? It seems crazy to say Ovi was held without a shot when you watch him wind up all game. Is misleading to me.

Yes!

1) Lets worry about next season right now!
2) Heck lets sit Flash & Semin NOW so we can put a combine 10 goals in for the 60+ that is the liability.

hmmm...me thinks the above analyst lies not the data.
Or maybe the math is bad & the smaller number must be better than the larger number.

So does that mean 3 is worse than 1 in this series?

I dunno. They pulled their goalie again. Having coached various youth sports, I understand the "sportsmanlike" aspect. But, sometimes you need to punish the puppy more than once.

I think the second line is suffering. But I lay that particular problem on the coach reluctance to establish a steady group. This line is very talented but there is no group cohesiveness, I think it is too much to ask of a line that is made up of cast-offs from other lines to jell together in a few games.

Posted by: LesGrossman | April 22, 2010 1:04 PM | Report abuse

@SoaringCaps

I know, I'm just messing.

I will remind you that not only is Semin a 40-goal scorer, but he is also a pt/player in the playoffs, this series withstanding until it finishes.

The only time his name should be considered in a trade is next year's deadline. And that depends heavily on what he wants to do and what GMGM wants to do. Since it's so far away, and lots of stuff can happen until then, I'm not seeing the dire need to discuss trades during a playoff series.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 22, 2010 1:10 PM | Report abuse

People need to lay off Semin. He is a great, great player. He obviously suffers from the fact that he plays with and is compared to the greatest player in the world. Anyone can go 4 games without a goal. Well, maybe anyone but Ovi. As has been pointed out here today (and frequently last year), Crosby positively disappeared in the finals last year. I don't suspect anyone in Pittsburgh was looking to trade him. I will be shocked if the Caps don't get him signed to a long term deal next year. And, if he goes, you will all really miss his skill.

You do that at the end of the win number four. When it's your 3rd win, you score as many as you can any way you can.
