Quick practice update

Defenseman Tom Poti, who was a late scratch last night because of a groin injury, is not on the ice for practice. Everyone else, including Jose Theodore -- a late scratch because of the flu against Carolina -- is out there.

Stay tuned. It could be an interesting day out here.

Can we get the team to wear the Michael Jackson surgical mask until everyone is healthy?

Posted by: superpaqman | March 4, 2009 11:22 AM | Report abuse

I don't see any big moves today, but some nibbling around the edges. Bouwmeester and Pronger will stay where they are. Some movement will happen with secondary "character" players and the odd backup goalie.

I'd be OK with what we have for the remainder of this year.

But if the expectation is the Cup, then we need a lot more.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 4, 2009 11:24 AM | Report abuse

Save the $64, I'll drive Schultz there myself!

Posted by: Don-Ald | March 4, 2009 11:27 AM | Report abuse

Get Ovie to wear some clothes around the locker room; it may help... and can anyone please stop Semin from wearing his goddamn pink lycra undershirts?

Posted by: atybat | March 4, 2009 11:28 AM | Report abuse

Are they all practicing with the cell phones on them?

Posted by: TheCapitalist1 | March 4, 2009 11:29 AM | Report abuse

So where is Poti? In the training room getting the groin attended to or at the Century 21 office putting his house up for sale?

Posted by: tominfl1 | March 4, 2009 11:30 AM | Report abuse

I would love to see them dump Nyls and go after adam foote or morris

Posted by: Boomer80 | March 4, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

@ Don-Ald...

Here's $50... put it towards gas and buy him a $5 dollar foot-long from subway.

Posted by: Scofield | March 4, 2009 11:32 AM | Report abuse

It's gonna be interesting to see how the Caps react to two absoltue stinkers in a row at home and the trade deadline. I'm praying for a rugid defender and a lockerroom leader. That and a cure for the flu for this team.

only good news this week...Boston is losing too...

I really hope the trade will give us the boost we need to make it to the end of the season with a winning record...

Get rid of Nylander..please...please..please!!

Don't they play for the CUP????

Posted by: Boomer80 | March 4, 2009 11:33 AM | Report abuse

It is really odd that the Caps called up Jay Beagle to play the other day instead of Nylander. Does BB really believe Beagle would be more effective than Nyles? If so, what would it take for BB to give Nyles a game sweater? Do we expect Nylander to ever play another game for the Caps when he's deemed lower than jay beagle?

What's up with all the advertising plugs here - Century 21, subway... anyone else want to plug something. Man, I'm thristy, I could use a nice refreshing Gatorade right now.

Posted by: _828 | March 4, 2009 11:34 AM | Report abuse

@ 828

The best way to follow that delicious refreshing gatorade would be a nice spirited work out on a Bowflex. Used by Chuck Norris the bowflex is guaranteed to make your round house kick at least 27% stronger in the first week or your gatorade back

Boomer80

do you really think this team is ready for that? Do you really think that management expects to get the Cup this year?

I think that they're expecting to go deep in the playoffs. If they get to the Cup, fantastic. However, next year is the year.

Just my impression from hearing the managers and owners talking.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 4, 2009 11:38 AM | Report abuse

TheVampireCorndog - hahaha... that got my laughing pretty hard.

Posted by: _828 | March 4, 2009 11:39 AM | Report abuse

I think teams should be required to trade sweater numbers for sweater numbers - JayBo for Erskine?

Posted by: saintex | March 4, 2009 11:40 AM | Report abuse

Jordan leopold to Calgary

Posted by: lylewimbledon | March 4, 2009 11:42 AM | Report abuse

Boomer80,
It's all about experience for these young guys. Right now, most of them only have last years playoff experience. This year, hopefully this more experience... next year, go for it! Everyone wants to win it, no question about that. But, there is no point in blowing next years chances or the year after that just for this "one" shot.

The Flames gets Leopold. Darn it.

Nyls to KHL to play with Jagr for 100,000 crude oil

Posted by: CodePoetry | March 4, 2009 11:42 AM | Report abuse

Wow, they picked Nycholat off waivers to trade him - nice move!

Posted by: _828 | March 4, 2009 11:43 AM | Report abuse

Greg S has it right, there is no internal pressure for the Caps to win the cup this year. I think they want to get into the 2nd round, get a taste of how much more intense the atmosphere gets, see how key players react and then try to make player moves to address their needs for a real run next year.

Posted by: ds_kelly | March 4, 2009 11:43 AM | Report abuse

So today's practical joke is to walk into the locker and tell someone the GMGM needs to talk with them...

Seems like Leopold is a done deal to Calgary

Scratch one off the wishlist for the Caps, the pool is getting a little shallower.

New thread, Ovi hurt at practice.

Posted by: saintex | March 4, 2009 11:48 AM | Report abuse

i understand that...i was just saying that since day 1 of the season the caps goal was to win the cup. THats it, i understand that this team will be the same team for atleast 2 more years, and can a year or so more of experince is great for them...

Posted by: Boomer80 | March 4, 2009 11:53 AM | Report abuse

I'm not worried about the last two losses. What I'm looking at is a certain team of flightless birds coming in on Sunday. Folks, git yer guns! We're huntin' us some penguins on Sunday.

Shake off the "I hate the Caps" out of your system, folks. We'll use Toronto as a ramp up to the game against the Pitts on Sunday. Let's come back and show the Caps no hard feelings for the past two games and help them win the next two. Let's...GOO...CAPS!!!

Posted by: Capsnskins1 | March 4, 2009 12:06 PM | Report abuse

There goes a goalie, Tellqvist to Buffalo.

Posted by: ds_kelly | March 4, 2009 12:10 PM | Report abuse

Yea I saw that. What about that guy on Montreal... Halak. Another goaile deal with Montreal again.

Posted by: Capsnskins1 | March 4, 2009 12:12 PM | Report abuse

some thoughts:

We may actually have to trade Nyls for nothing, AND throw in an asset, just to get the cap room. Wouldn't that be funny (ish)? It could happen.

Some words about defense: when Detroit beat us in the two teams first meeting in the finals (the other meetings have yet to occur but I do think Detroit is good enough to make it again soon), they played a clinical, almost emotionless game. They did not go for big hits on defense - in fact, those are counterproductive. Instead they'd very efficiently leverage the guy away from the puck just using their shoulders. A "hit" would not allow this to happen, btw. They would place the shoulder in, then apply the force to turn the guy. Then, they'd skate away, their body between opponent and puck. Clinical and effective. All of their forwards seemed to know how to do this.

Toronto just picked up Gerber from waivers, maybe they will move Toskala?

Posted by: ds_kelly | March 4, 2009 12:24 PM | Report abuse

OH MY GOD....GET RID OF NYLANDER ALREADY!!!! We really need a good D-man, with Pronger out GMGM needs to head hunt J BO! I hope Ovie will be able to get his injury out of the way before Thursday!

Posted by: NatyBG | March 4, 2009 12:37 PM | Report abuse

Maybe it would be good for the Caps to play a game without AO.

Posted by: ds_kelly | March 4, 2009 12:42 PM | Report abuse
