Rangers Ask NHL to Discipline Caps

The Rangers have asked the NHL to discipline the Capitals for "gross negligence in ensuring the safety of the personnel on the Rangers' bench." This email from GM Glen Sather to league commissioner Gary Bettman was just handed out in the press box at Madison Square Garden:

"Dear Gary:

In addition to your suspension of Coach Tortorella for his actions during last night's game, we respectfully request that you consider appropriate discipline in light of Washington's gross negligence in ensuring the safety of the personnel on the Rangers' bench, including Coach Tortorella, in the face of the Rangers' repeated requests for intervention against egregious fan misconduct during Game 5. As importantly, we would like the League's intervention to ensure that there are adequate security measures in place to protect our personnel in the event there is a Game 7 in Washington.

Neither the NHL nor either team has had the opportunity to conduct a full investigation or to interview all witnesses but the television coverage and the statements made by Rangers bench personnel make clear that Washington utterly failed in its security obligations to the Rangers, not to mention its own fans. The tension was evident from before the opening face-off. Throughout the game, several people seated immediately behind the visitors' bench took advantage of the looseness of the glass panels and the unusually wide gaps between the panels to assault the Rangers with some of the most obscene language imaginable. Because of the way the glass is installed, the patron sitting behind Coach Tortorella (the gray-haired, bearded man in the white T-Shirt) could literally scream into the coach's ear. According to Rangers trainer Jim Ramsay, one patron was screaming at the team, in graphic language, about whether Dan Girardi and Marc Staal have a sexual relationship. This was within earshot of several children seated nearby. Several other fans also made repeated homophobic remarks. Moreover, Mr. Ramsay reported that he and other bench personnel were spit on by one or more "fans" as they yelled through the gaps in the glass.

Your statement tonight referred to alerting security. In the first period, Mr. Ramsay warned the security guard stationed on the nearest stairwell (a large African-American man) that the situation was unacceptable and was likely to get ugly. No action was taken. The misconduct continued. In the second period, Mr. Ramsay warned a female security supervisor that some fans were out of control and that he was concerned that something unfortunate was going to happen. Although this supervisor was equipped with a radio, she apparently took no action, because the same fans were in their seats when the team returned to the bench for the third period. According to press accounts, no fans were ever ejected or permanently removed from their seats.

Washington's failure to respond to what its personnel knew -- and were specifically warned -- was a potentially dangerous situation contributed significantly to this unfortunate incident. Accordingly, we respectfully request that you consider imposing appropriate discipline on Washington for its knowing failure to protect the Rangers and prevent the situation from deteriorating into an incident that reflects badly on all of us. In addition, we must immediately discuss how Washington is going to handle security for any Game 7. Neither the Rangers nor the well-behaved Capitals fans should be forced to endure the extraordinary level of fan misconduct that Washington failed to prevent in Game 5.

Thank you for your consideration.

Glen

Ovie almost 5-holed that rebound. Lundy got lucky it hit something, it was exposed.

Red - he also tapes the Lions' preseason games - has been for years. It's just sad.

With you Dave, was about to post along the same lines. That was no good

Posted by: JS26121820 | April 26, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

So bad words MADE tortorella assault a fan who was not the "offending" party? And it the Capitals' fault? bettman will probably buy that.

Posted by: uncatim | April 26, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

I ask that Tortorella is disciplined.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 26, 2009 2:31 PM | Report abuse

No chat today? Gee we can't talk to the Rangers trolls during the game and invite them over Tuesday.

All rangers love for these hoemr announcers.

Jesus christ. Absolutely no love for the save, but the play.

Brads had a chance to be a hero again.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 26, 2009 2:32 PM | Report abuse

ok, my second reaction is peels of laughter and saying "really?! You really think anyone is going to take THAT letter seriously?!" (more laughing ensures). Its just so ridiculous, its hilarious. The trite language. the absurd length. The 'there's been no investigation, but we want you to punish them anyways because we're New York and we always get what we want" attitude of entitlement.

Thank you, New York Rangers, for that delightful little piece of humor.

Wow Brash...that is just needless.

cheap shot brash.

Posted by: ejohnsto | April 26, 2009 2:39 PM | Report abuse

Kirk - I will next year too (had Sunday ticket this year and thought the Caps would be on versus more than they actually were, so I ididn't get Center Ice), but I like to think the Skins are better than the Lions! :)

Shoot that Green. Top shelf.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 26, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

At least you guys have HD. I'm watching with an antenna. Its almost too fuzzy to see the puck! :-D

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 26, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

we are SO, SO lucky to get a 4-on-4 out of that

Posted by: JS26121820 | April 26, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

that would've been a semin goal if that got through

Posted by: rachel216 | April 26, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Brasheer is going to cost the game.

Posted by: opita1 | April 26, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

Cheap shot? or follow through?

Posted by: Sonyask | April 26, 2009 2:40 PM | Report abuse

If Betts was the one who did it, maybe.

This is hockey, it happens. Brash has done worse in the past. (score a goal, punch Simon anyone?)

It drew a penalty and a 4on4. not too bad.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Caps need to score on the odd-man rushes up ice.

Posted by: MReilly9 | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

We're lucky Mara came back at him and somehow that ended up 4 on 4. He needs to calm that stuff down or get sat the rest of the game.

Green looks into it but D was playing the pass heavy there, take the shot.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Yeah I figured that to be a 5 on 4. Some interesting chants in NY. We need more creativity at the phone booth.

Posted by: ejohnsto | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

That reminded me of Lindros trying to get up and skate off the ice.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Hello All!

Lets Go Cap - I - Tals!!!

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Has shades of Game 1. Caps score then give one up again quickly. That PP goal they allowed deflated them, and it gave the Rangers energy. But on that goal, Poti could have collected and cleared, but he just coasted back. And Brashear's cheap shot was idiotic. This game is slowly slipping away from the Caps.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

Cheap shot. I love Brash but call a spade a spade

Posted by: JS26121820 | April 26, 2009 2:41 PM | Report abuse

clearly not an elbow. he didnt get interference as betts was considered to have touched the puck last and was still "in possetion". borderline for sure and uncessary.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | April 26, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

we are SO, SO lucky to get a 4-on-4 out of that

Posted by: JS26121820 | April 26, 2009 2:40 PM |

not really. why would he get 4 for that?

It happens, get over it. This is playoff hockey. Every other team does cheapies, it's our turn.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 26, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

omg...not even a power play for that brash play...that deserves another wow!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 26, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 26, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: akus2 | April 26, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

exactly richmondphil. How did everyone already forget about the Orr hit on Semin?

PP PLEASE WAKE UP!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 26, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

next thing you know, the Rangers are going to request that, while they can continue to do whatever they darn well please to the Caps, the Caps should not touch a Ranger at all. They're delicate, after all.

Posted by: RedBirdie | April 26, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

I wasn't suggesting Brash should've got a 4; I meant we were lucky Mara retaliated

Posted by: JS26121820 | April 26, 2009 2:46 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: uncatim | April 26, 2009 2:47 PM | Report abuse

Avery has the cheap shot deficit to the point where Brash is just collecting the interest. BB must have given the order go that way since it is elimination. We really do have nothing to loose.

Clawed back in it. Outscored 15-8 in the series. Finish this one off and bring it back home boys.

That was actually a very pretty 3 on 1 by some of our grinder guys. Not completely smooth but it works. Look for Ovie to put the dagger through the heart early in the 2nd.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 26, 2009 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | April 26, 2009 3:07 PM | Report abuse

nice period! Dave Steckel's game has been super lately.

And i like to see the Brash hit like that altho it will lead to a suspension. Its time this team crosses the line into a little dirty play, we're probably the last nhl team to do something like that. Did Betts do anything to deserve that? someone mentioned Orr on Ovechkin - this wasn't retaliation for that but I'm not going to crucify him for that even though this is a critical game. At least he didn't do it in the 3rd. And after that hit we scored 2 didn't we?

I do kinda see it as this being the Rangers Game 7. I could be wrong and they could regroup and put forth a good effort like Philly did last year, but I don't think they will have answers to the important questions. This game isn't over yet either though, just ask Philly fans how safe Game 6 leads are.

a two goal lead should make the rags have to open up their game and come out of their shell. the caps should see some good chances in the second. one more and the rags *might* not have enough O to come back

I don't know about traditionally...but in this series we've twice had a 2 goal lead going into the 2nd. It's been bigger at the start of the 3rd each time. I'll take status quo from here on out though. Get one more then roll 4 lines and rest our big guns. Winning today doesn't mean we've won the series.

Don't be so hard on the NBC crew unless you understand their job. They are paid to keep people's television sets turned on thus they stir up the pot by talking about Varlimov being "shaky", "two periods to go and anything could happen", and reviewing the cheap shot by Brashear. Then they switch gears and devote two minutes to Ovechkin and his more spectacular plays. Its all to keep people from leaving their sets on a day where Canada and the eastern U.S. has very warm weather.

For fans with a team that is up 3-1 in this game, there is alot of paranoia about NBC, jesus.

As far as the Rangers letter:
1. I've never heard hockey players complain about the fans "vulgar language". The Rangers of course never use 4 letter words on the ice...
2. Don't you think the Rangers brass could have complained to somebody a little higher rank than the ushers, if they were really having a problem??

Posted by: JS26121820 | April 26, 2009 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Ahh, Semin had a quality chance there thanks to Backstrom. Another solid game from Backstrom. He and Semin are dominating the Rangers whenever they're on the ice. I'd still rather see Laich with them rather than Flash, who's been useless. But those two are earning it in this series.

Posted by: CDon | April 26, 2009 3:31 PM | Report abuse

Clark before Nyles: Brash is a rw, so is Clark. Clark loves to park in front of the net and score garbage goals. Nyles circles on a breakaway. Nyles is not better than any center playing for the Caps. Case closed.

Hahaha ... nice.

Posted by: stacktracer | April 26, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Koz will be a little more into the game now...sick move and finish there.

I really cannot stand us trying to be cute in our own end trying to set up someone with acres of space to carry the puck out. Make the quick easy pass out of the zone. ESPECIALLY don't try little finesse deals off the boards.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 26, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: rachel216 | April 26, 2009 3:33 PM | Report abuse

if brash gets benched i sure hope to see Clarkie back in, not Nyles. Clarkie's a playoff type grinder that we need more of.

Up until that goal the Rangers were really forechecking us hard into turnovers.

@CDon

Like I said a few games ago, Backs/Semin together took over the 2nd half of the series last year. I'd like to see Laich up with them too but that 3rd line is playing so well right now don't mess with it. Maybe Flash will pick up his game with the space he'll get playing with Backs/Semin.

I'm glad Koz scored but I thought his effort in the 1st period was terrible. That line isn't completely clicking yet. Without the space Ovie provides they would have nothing going at all. Of course, it shouldn't be a surprise at this point that Backstrom's line looks so good out there. So much of the good stuff he does gets overlooked. He was a steal at #4 overall.

I think it'd be great if they benched Lundstrom again. How do you think he's going to feel coming into Game 7 after being chased the prior two?

And Schonie's wondering what Tortellini would do...

I wonder where my friend "Go Rangers" is? Let alone all the other Ranger fans who were saying we were toast! How ya like me now? I must say as rooting for this team for over 30 yrs I had my doubts too but we WILL NOT lose Tuesday night! The Rangers are done, stick a fork in 'em baby! Now let's hope Carolina can take care of the Devils and let's start cooking some Penguins in round 2. Pens suck! Yeah I said it.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 26, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

I think the point Milbury made about Avery was dead on. i was thinking the same thing. Avery isn't really a Torts kind of player, Torts has never employed an agitator on any team he has coached. It doesn't fit into his style. Avery was a Glen Sather acquisition and Torts had no choice but to play him.

So when Avery starts taking a slew of penalties, its the perfect excuse for Torts to bench him, and it makes Avery a much more tentative player. He's already skated away from a # of potential hits tonight, he's afraid to take a single penalty. He must not realize that Schoenfeld coaches a different style of hockey.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 26, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

@JIMALLCAPS

No doubt, same ole disrespect. NBC has always favored the other team, Milbury is a complete tool, this is killing him. Sorry, Mike. The Rag's have given up today. And we are doing to them what should have already been done in gm1 and 2

Boy is the dumbest thing on TV when McQuire and Milbury play coach of each team? No wonder nobody watches hockey on TV. If I had to deal with these morons all the time I wouldn't watch it either. Unreal, and how is Mike Milbury calling Avery "idiot Avery" on national TV? Completely classless. He's right but there's certain things you don't say on TV and that's one of them. The only thing better would be to see Avery kick the snot out of Milbury. Can't stand that guy.

@cs

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 26, 2009 3:14 PM

traditionally meaning the regular season.

I think its time to start rolling the 4 lines this period. I want to see more of Fehr, he was just starting to look good again and if you get him clicking that's really going to be a boost for this team.

Wait till those two now-named players catch up with that PR person back in NYC. If I were that person .. I'd quit now and move far away. As for the rest of the letter, even the Rangers own beat reporters said that stuff goes on all the time in the Garden in articles covering Coach T's DC transgressions. Pretty pithy coming out of NYC let alone a hockey team. I think New Yorkers were bigger than this.

So, what sanctions exactly are the Rags calling for? Are they gonna petition to have game 7 moved to MSG? The way this 3rd period has been called, wouldn't surprise me. I thought the Torts suspension wouldn't make any difference today, and I still don't think it did, but I also think the Rags bench might be a little squirrely Tuesday; not much but just enough to keep them off their game

Obviously, I'm happy the Caps are moving on, but that was possibly the worst third period they could've played. That lost goal, in particular, may have exposed a hole in Varlamov's game. Don't be surprised if the Rangers shoot blocker side, short side high in Game 7. Nice win, but the ending leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I hope it does for the players, too, so they come out hard on Tuesday.

Who else is way more confident for this game 7 than last year's? The Rangers were exposed tonight just like they were in 3 and 5. I don't care how you spin it, we're just plain-ole better. Our 3 wins have all been no-doubt-about-it blowouts. Their 3 wins were all either because of our mistakes (1) or Lundy standing on his head (2,4). I never felt this confident against Philly last year. Not even close.

not a pretty third - but i may have expected too much thinking they would get two goals. the rags are reeling now - other than at 1-1 they were never in this game. two of their goals were on the PP and a garbage with 5 sec left. if the caps play anything like they did in the first 40 of this game on tuesday - i like there chances. any two goal lead by the caps in game 7 could destroy the rags

argh. great win but the boys lost their fing focus. they should have known the refs would have been all over them. They got sloppy and lazy and let the rags get back in it. but, getting back in it and still losing Is deflating.

Still, the plan should have been just one goal on varly. The rags need to believe that the kid is a wall. 3 goals lifts that cloud. no room for mistakes on Tuesday.

1st and 2nd period are huge, awesome, immense. 3rd sucked. but the refs giving up two 5 on 3's? bs.

If that's true it was classless and humiliating that our fans would act like that. Tortorella was obviously WAY out of line, but those fans were too. Now should the Rangers take this in stride and hope people forget that their coach tried to impale fans on a hockey stick? Yeah probably, but I can see where their coming from, if those were Philly fans heckling our players I would be FURIOUS.

The Rangers woke the Caps up and now with their rabbit's foot Henrik Lundqvist no longer working for them, they definitely look like a #7 seed that came in as underdogs.

The Caps don't need players like Sean Avery to 'get into the heads' of opposing players and teams, we do that by passing, skating and shooting the puck into the net.

A few points: It's 3-3 because your team ran out of luck. Those fools were lucky to win game 1 and Henrik stole game 2 and 4. Varly has been just as good, if not better than Lundqvist.

I had to literally laugh out loud at your "those are YOUR kids hearing the invective not mine" comment. Your classless fans say and do worse, in front of your own children.

Rangers issue press release prior to Game 7 saying they have hired their own security guards to sit on the bench and deal with fan problems... NHL tells them not to do it... Rangers say screw you and do it anyway... Caps fans behind the bench hurl vile insults at the Rangers players, coaches and security guards... Rangers security leaves the bench to confront these fans... Caps security moves in to confront Rangers security... The two security forces exchange gunfire... A new season of "24" begins.....

P.S.--- The NHL subsequently expels the Rangers ownership (MSG) from the league and takes over the franchise, pending a sale to new owners... MSG then files a lawsuit asking for $500 million in compensation for the loss of their franchise, moves to freeze the NHL's assets until they get paid, and bans the NHL from letting the Rangers use their arena... The Rangers are then sold and moved to Cleveland and the city of New York files a $1 billion lawsuit, forcing the NHL to file for bankruptcy... And we are one step closer to Armageddon.....

GO CAPS... While you still can!

Let's wrap this series up so we can recover in time for Round 2. I cringe at the thought that the Rangers' management would even bother with a letter that is blatantly the pot calling the kettle black. The Capitals took their lumps from that piehole of a player Avery but did you see a whiney letter from Capitals' management to have the Rangers stop? Nope. As for Sarahkate, you poor thing you. Before you go throwing a fellow Capitals fan under the bus, try remembering the number of classless abuse the Capitals had to go through with the Rangers. Shame on you. I think at some point, we've all wanted to do what he did. As for heckling, we've all done it. I think given the fact that the Rangers were s*cking big time, Torts couldn't hack it. Just like his team couldn't hack the barrage of our team. On to Game 7....

Colin Campbell is quoted as saying, "it has been made clear to all of our players, coaches and other bench personnel that the National Hockey League cannot -- and will not -- tolerate any physical contact with fans"

and continues with,

"Even where a fan is verbally abusive, intoxicated, or profane, club personnel should either ignore the conduct or, where appropriate, seek the assistance of police or security personnel at the arena."

If the Rangers organization can't win at hockey they might as well attempt to win in a contest to see who can cry me a river the fastest.

Someone needs to remind Ol' Slats (Glen Sather's nickname when he played with the Rangers) that the building and the security personell on site are not employees of the Washington Capitals or Lincoln Holdings (the organization that owns the Caps). If he wants this issue addressed, he should take it up with Abe Pollin and Washington Sports and Entertainment, the folks who own the arena.

While he's there, he could also ask them to check on the quality of the ice...

What? The fans, in Washington, were screaming? Even the ones right behind the Rangers' bench? No frickin' way! How could this happen?

I especially love the concern about the children in the DC audience. I can see the Rangers sitting around fretting over those poor children, who now may be wondering for the first time about what exactly it means to be gay, having to ask their parents, and oh boy what an uncomfortable conversation there will be in store for those parents.

I am sure none of those parents had any idea that obscenities and foul language might be heard by their kids in those seats. Generally speaking, especially in the playoffs, fans in DC are known for their teetotaling ways, and sit passively in their seats.

And what is this homophobia they speak of? At a sporting event? I am shocked.

I, for one, on behalf of those Capitals fans with kids that were within earshot, am thankful for the letter the Rangers wrote.

It's obvious to me that Verizon is not going to do anything about obnoxious fans, so it's up to all of the 'good' fans to start policing the crowd. 'Security' is a non-presence at Verizon, and most ushers there don't even know that hockey has 3 'periods', not 'quarters'. When someone throws stuff on the ice, or screams obscenities, that is a violation of EVERY arenas code of conduct. Cheering for the home team, booing the opposition, that's all great. Screaming SUCKS and being part of the a-hole chant is the reason kids have zero respect for each other and adults. When the frat boys are wandering around the aisles, it's ok to yell "wait for the whistle" or "find your seats"...the new fans need to understand hockey etiquette. Drunken screaming may be par for the course at Redskins games, but I always thought NHL fans had respect for the game overall. That includes our team, the opponents and the officials. I wish every one of you who participate in the a-hole chant got that same treatment every time you were late to a meeting or missed a deadline.
