Reading List

As we wait for the Caps to hit the ice for practice at Arena (which won't be until 4:30 p.m. on the East coast) here's a collection of today's Caps' stories. Yesterday's link experiment was such a hit that we're going to compile a sample of Caps' stories from the hockey and sporting world on a daily basis. Enjoy.

From the Calgary Sun: Penalty kill Kips 'em at bay, Sloan big hit at 'Dome, Semin ducks spotlight

From the Calgary Herald: Sloan announces arrival with bone-rattling belt, Flames conquer Alexander the Gr8

From the Globe and Mail: Calgary's Cinderella Man hits the ice in his late sister's honor.

And an in case you missed it, from the Arizona Republic: Tellqvist to start against Caps.

Thanks Katie,

Telly in net for Phoenix eh? Methinks AO will score a couple.

Posted by: Graham | October 22, 2008 2:08 PM | Report abuse

this team is lucky to have 3 wins...not looking very cohesive...a lot of individual play. Green got caught trying to be too cute last night and took some really bad penalties. They all did for that matter. What an odd game and a lot of BS calls! Only bright spot was Theodore actually looked respectable, and of course the monstrous hit by Sloan. Otherwise, I don't think Sloan had a very good game. Ovie and Backstrom really need to get their offense going.

Your links don't include... any blogs. Seems odd.

Player rankings are out on TSN.CA. Semin is ranked 2nd while Green is ranked 3rd overall. Among all D-men, Green is first. Nylander is 13th among Centers.

Just FYI.

Things could be a lot worse. I hate west coast road trips, but I think they're a necessary evil, and depending on how the team bounces back could spell how the rest of the season goes.

I don't mind so much, on the sole basis of we have always notoriously been slow starters, and then we climb back in later. Last season was a prime example. Things will work out.

Awesome post. Would love to have more of these "reading lists" as the season goes on.

I might have missed this earlier, but was the 2 for unsportsmanlike last night for fighting without taking off your visor?
2 instigating
2 fighting with a visor
5 fighting

It's refreshing that the national media and more importantly, the Calgary media are embracing the Sloan hit for what it was-a great open ice hit done completely within the parameter of the rule book. No whining and crying to be found anywhere.
Somewhere, Scott Stevens had to be smiling when he saw it.

Posted by: Riddler | October 22, 2008 3:00 PM | Report abuse

More than that. They're complaining that Bourque went after Sloan. They said that it was a clean hit and Bourque should have stayed out of it. Even Keenan didn't argue the point, except trying to get the 5 minutes to 4.

Posted by: Greg S. | October 22, 2008 3:05 PM | Report abuse

@Greg S

I should have brought up that side of the issue as well. Your right, Bourque is being rediculed for his actions. One more reason to like the NHL.

Posted by: Riddler | October 22, 2008 3:13 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, there's rule somewhere that starting a fight while wearing a visor is a penalty. Clark got hit with the same thing either last season or the year before defending Ovie.

Posted by: tallbear | October 22, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

Yep. Its a shame the Caps weren't able to ridicule Bourque as well by putting up a couple of goals.

Hopefully last night's game was hometown jitters. Please tell me that was the last homecoming this season. It seemed obvious that Green was trying to dazzle for his friends.

If Sloan is going to step up and make hits like that a lot he may find a place in the NHL in the future.

Here it is: (from last year's rulebook)
47.6 Face Protection - If a player penalized as an instigator of an altercation is wearing a face shield (including a goalkeeper), he shall be assessed an additional unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

For all the fellow CI subscribers.

Tonight's Flyers versus Sharks tilt has the potential to be a very good game to watch. It's a rare home and home set that pits East versus West and usually breeds a little contempt. Philly is desperate for a "W". I watched the first two periods when they played the other night and it was a very spirited game. I missed the third but looked to be just as good or better.
Thank me on Thursday for your Wednesday PM hockey "fix"

Anyone know if/when Verizon will start carrying NHL Network on FIOS? I am thinking of starting a petition.

Tim - No need for a petition. Verizon is adding The NHL Network and NHL Center Ice for Fios customers. It's not available yet but will be soon.

Here's a link about it and letter from Verizon -

"Thank you for your letters. The reason we are just responding to you regarding NHL Center Ice and the NHL Network on Verizon Fios is because it has just been finalized that both will be offered on Verizon Fios. Please be patient as we are awaiting an official launch date.

Thank you for your continued interest in hockey,
NHL Center Ice"
