Rookie Camp Update

I just arrived at Kettler Capitals Iceplex, and to my surprise Karl Alzner and Josh Godfrey have returned from junior national team duty and are on the ice for a scrimmage, as is enforcer Donald Brashear.

I also got a look at right wing Eric Fehr (mysterious back/hip injury). Though he skated yesterday, he was walking around gingerly. I'm no doctor, but it doesn't look like he'll be ready for camp.

Alex Ovechkin, meantime, is due to arrive in Washington later today after participating in a Right to Play appearance in Toronto.

Is Borque on the ice today? I was there on Saturday and I didnt see him out there....

Bourque isn't involved w/ the rookie camp. He'll be starting camp Friday (9/14) w/ the rest of the "vets". He skated w/ Mike Green, Eric Fehr, and Dave Steckel after rookie camp Saturday in an informal skate/practice.

You know, this chronic injury to Fehr is stunning. His career seems to be permanently stalled - I tell you, it makes the Kozlov signing look great. This might be Flash's year at last to shine.

I gotcha. I misread the article the other day. Thanks for the info.

With Fehr looking out, who has the inside track to be the third top-3 line right wing (besides Kozlov and Clark)? Klepis? Fleischmann? Clymer (ugh)?

It's also possible that Fehr was simply sore from skating for the first time in a while. Yeesh.

He's rehabing from a serious injury. Rushing it to satisfy some fan-imposed deadline to play training camp isn't going to help him.

I guess I was going on Tarik's assessment of Fehr's condition - I believe Tarik has been around long enough to know whether someone has sustained real injuries vs. "shaking off a little rust" in coming back from one.
I believe Fehr may not get the chance with the Caps he probably deserves - too many others are willing to step in and contribute now.

Tarik, how come we're not seeing any profiles on the rookies? I know you had the small piece when their camp started but nothing since (and while I love your blog, it doesn't count as being in the Post). Corey Masisak over at the Times has already had a couple of articles in his paper. It's time to let your editors know that hockey season has started and they're going to have to let loose on some of their coverage of the Redskins.

I saw Fehr walking around on Saturday and he looked fine; so who knows.

Really hoping he can show his stuff this year.

When will you resume your weekly chat session?

Posted by: Mo | September 11, 2007 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Ok, last year it was pretty easy to get them and with their increased security at Kettler, will it be easy to get specific players' autographs?

Who should I get? Besides OV and Semin, who on the Caps should I want to add to my puck wall (217 pucks and counting, all mine!)

Posted by: Autographs | September 11, 2007 2:50 PM | Report abuse

Shaggy: And yet, even Tarik prefaces his remark with that he's not a doctor. "Walking around gingerly" is nothing to go on to jump to conclusions about a player's physical condition. As I said, Fehr's rehabbing from a major injury that knocked out his season, which is far different from "shaking off a little rust," and I suggest before declaring his career permamentally stalled you allow him to actually attempt to come back first.

You have to get a Clark puck. As well as Poti!!

Posted by: Brad | September 11, 2007 4:12 PM | Report abuse

exwhaler, you mena you want people not to jump to conclusions and think the sky is falling before actually having any hard evidence.

Please this is the Caps fandom, once one thing of angst is put down they have to come up with something new.

Tarik, you should come up with a contest to figure out the next over reaction by a Caps fan.
