Roster Housekeeping
Here are the current injured reserve designations, according to the Caps:
*Chris Clark was activated from long term injured reserve today and will be in the lineup tonight.
*Sergei Fedorov, meantime, has been put on LTIR, retroactive to Dec. 14th, so he's be eligible to come off on Jan. 9 vs. Columbus (since he must miss 10 games and 24 days). This move allows the Caps to keep Karl Alzner.
Also on LTIR are John Erskine, Brian Pothier and Jeff Schultz, who can come off at any time. Schultz told me this morning that he's shooting for Sunday.
On injured reserve are Tom Poti, Alexander Semin and Mike Green.

I find the statement by Mr. El-Bashir that putting Fedorov on IR allows us to keep Karl Alzner to be an odd one. I am pretty sure we need to keep Karl Alzner for the rest of the season, regardless of the injury situation. +5 for his career, after 14 NHL games, is nothing to sneeze at, plus he just looks like he belongs in the NHL.
I believe the Hockey Night in Canada broadcasters a week or two ago, when the Caps were on, pretty much stated that the Caps would be extremely unlikely to send him back to Hershey again. Why would we even think about sending him down?

@youaresquishy: It's a cap space issue. I don't think anyone disagrees with you that Alzner has earned his place here in Washington, but we are very close to the cap, and without injuries, it becomes a numbers game. When someone comes back, we could be forced to send him down because he doesn't fit under the cap and he's still exempt from waivers, so we cah send him down without losing him.
