Russia beats Czech Republic, 4-2

(AP/Gene J. Puskar)

From the AP:

Evgeni Malkin scored twice and Russia bounced back from a shootout loss to Slovakia, beating the Czech Republic 4-2 Sunday to reach the Olympic hockey quarterfinals.
In a rematch of the 1998 Olympic gold-medal game, won 1-0 by the Czechs, Russia scored in every period to claim the top spot in Group B with seven points.
Malkin gave Russia (2-0-1-0) a 1-0 lead in the first and pushed it to 3-1 in the third after a huge hit by teammate Alex Ovechkin freed the puck at center ice.
Viktor Kozlov also scored for Russia, and Pavel Datsyuk added an empty-netter off assists from Ovechkin and Malkin.

GMGM owes Ovie a performance bonus after that hit on Jagr.
"They treat me so well in Russia, but at the same time, maybe I want to try to play here," said Jagr."
Still want to return to the NHL, Jaromir?

After watching the game... would you trade Backstrom for Malkin?

Posted by: Matt23185 | February 21, 2010 6:17 PM | Report abuse

NO

Posted by: joek443 | February 21, 2010 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Malkin is good don't get me wrong, Backstrom is a better passer and is being underutilized by Team Sweden. The answer is a resounding no.

First, Ovie was incredible. Set up Malkin's first goal with his play in front of the net, and then set up Malkin's second with the hit on Jagr and by drawing the defense. That hit was a game-changer.

Second, Backstrom for Malkin? Seriously? Backstrom is a playmaking, first-line center, and one of the best passers in the NHL. Malkin is great, but he wouldn't be anywhere near as good if Crosby wasn't drawing the best defensemen to play against his line, leaving Malkin to deal with the second pair of defensemen. Backstrom is much better.

I shall name this photo "Capital 11 million a year a earner cleans the clock of former capital 11 million payroll leak"! Lol

...and that's why OV is the better player; it's not a move, or a pass, or a shot, it's something Cindy can't do, change a game with a solid crushing hit.

That was an awesome sequence of events.

Go Russia, Go USA!

Another fun day for caps fans. Crosby and the Green-less Canadian Squad loses to the USA and Ovi leads his team to victory by obliterating Ted's biggest mistake.

The hockey equivalent of de-cleated. You could hear everybody in the arena go, "OHHHHHHHH!"

Right before the hit, I swore I thought I heard AO say, "THIS is for leaving me with a crappy team for my rookie season."

Holy moly! Caps fans have been waiting a long time for that SWEET payback! Thank you Ovie!

Did anyone else hear Mike Milbury saying he would take Ovechkin over Crosby? There was a question posed to the commentators, and the first guy said Crosby because "in the end, he can get the job done", meaning, I think, the Stanley Cup. Then Milbury made me fall out of my chair by saying the as a GM, Ovechkin would be better because he's more exciting and brings in more money, or something like that. I couldn't believe it. Maybe Milbury is trying to rehabilitate his reputation after the Caps/Penguins game when he said that Crosby was trying to say that he's still "Ovechkin's daddy."

This made me chuckle loudly. Nice.

Soooo...Ovechkin is a better hockey player than Crosby b/c he can hit better? Please...

The whole "who is the best player" argument is a pointless and stupid one, and anyone who was around in the day of Magic Johnson and Larry Bird has had enough of that futile debate to last a lifetime. Gretzky vs. Lemieux, Montana vs. Marino, Barry Sanders vs. Walter Peyton - who cares? Whatever side you're on it's an absolute pleasure anytime you get to see Ovechkin and Crosby step on the ice together - love 'em or hate 'em they're both the elite of their sport and we're lucky to see it.

I think a large number of Capitals fans gave a fist-pump and hissed "YESSSSSSS!" when Ovie's hit on Jagr went down.

Grendel, meet #8, Beowulf.

@duffymoon: agreed. Some people do all this Crosby bashing in fun (the way English soccer fans razz other players). Crosby's a great player, very quick hands and, from what I can tell, phenomenal acceleration. Malkin's been a revelation - he's been exceptional for Russia. Overall, though, I think Canada has picked their team poorly. They seem a bit slow, and too many stars. Three centericemen on one line?? Not working.

Malkin v Backstrom: I would not argue anything about Backs being as good as Malkin until after we sign him. We can't pay him Malkin money in any event. He's looked very good for Sweden.

@duffymoon... "Soooo...Ovechkin is a better hockey player than Crosby b/c he can hit better?"

Um, yea, it's not rocket science now is it? They are both great players, indeed, that's never been the question...the question they posed yesterday (and c'mon, all the who's the greatest stuff is so we can talk about sports in between the games, ya know? chill dude) was who would you take? Who would you rather build a team around, who's the most complete player? Complete player...Ovechkin, hands down, and that hit changed the game. Sorry, Crosby cannot do that. They can both do great things, but Crsoby is an old school Gretzky type, lots of flash and no muscle...OV is the new breed, get used to it.

Man... that pic would look great blown up on my basement wall... just wish Ovie's shirt was down to see his #

GREAT HIT OVIE... your welcome TED!

Yeah, wasn't a big fan of Roenick and Millbury switching positions on who the "best" player is - Crosby or Ovechkin. Kinda' weakens Roenick's statements the other days when he was defending Ovi to that butt-muncher Millbury. Of course, let's not overlook that Millbury's compliment was as greedy as they come, focusing more on the money Ovi would bring as opposed to his skills and talent. Looking forward to Russia vs Canada. Shh, it's okay, Canada. It's just gonna' hurt a little while longer.

Goo, Russia! Goo, USA!
