Is it bad I'm already prepared to skip class for Opening night?

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 12:25 PM | Report abuse

Of course it will be released tomorrow at noon, because I'll be in a meeting at that time (sigh). Can't wait to see a schedule that doesn't have us playing the SE teams 8 times!

Posted by: Jill | July 16, 2008 12:25 PM | Report abuse

@Corndog,

You and me both. Where are you skipping from?

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 12:26 PM | Report abuse

My favorite day all summer. Get the highlighter ready. And bring on the Western Conference.

Posted by: Geremy | July 16, 2008 12:31 PM | Report abuse

@Boo!

haha yes, I am but a lowly entrepreneur with enough free time on my hands to read up on CBA FAQ's http://www.nhlscap.com/cap_faq.htm and maintain a Caps salary cap work sheet.

Besides, I don't think i could handle working for the NHL if I had to be around Count Bettman. He creeps me out.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 16, 2008 12:33 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

is there any reason the caps can't get into a winter classic?I know it would be hard to do here in DC with the crazy weather but what about an Away winter classic...us vs the pens?

Posted by: capshockey98 | July 16, 2008 12:34 PM | Report abuse

@ Jordan

I'm at NVCC so I'll probably be skipping my Chinese class if it's a Tuesday or Thursday. Otherwise I'll be trying to get off work early on a Friday or something of the sort. What about you?

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 12:38 PM | Report abuse

@Sombrero

How goes the sombrero making travel business?

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 12:39 PM | Report abuse

In a surprise move by the NHL, The Capitals will play the Florida Panthers 30 times this year.

Posted by: Gary Bettman | July 16, 2008 12:42 PM | Report abuse

capshockey98,

Only two teams have ever played in one, and only two more are scheduled, so I'm not sure why that implies that the Caps "can't get into one." I understand your sentiment though... It would be awesome to see. If they continue to turn into the major contender that they appear to be turning into and they keep packing the seats at VC, I'm sure they'll end up in a Winter Classic one of these seasons in the relatively near future.

Winning a Cup would probably help too.

I seem to remember an interview with the guy in charge of the ice at the first Classic who said that with the technology they have now, they could put down a good sheet of outdoor ice in Florida in September if they needed to. Says a lot about the phone booth's issues, doesn't it?

Posted by: HolyOlie | July 16, 2008 12:46 PM | Report abuse

Confirmation will come this afternoon, of course, but for those talking about Opening Night I understand it will be Friday, October 10.

Posted by: StikSav | July 16, 2008 12:49 PM | Report abuse

@Corndog,

I'm at the Art Institute.. I'd be missing Critical Thinking for a Tu-Th game, and I'd have to just head to VC straight from work the other days of the week.

Can't friggin wait.

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 12:50 PM | Report abuse

How much will ticket prices change based on the success of last season?

Posted by: Resist The Machine | July 16, 2008 12:53 PM | Report abuse

I think Ted is going to make us sit 3 to a seat, like on a school bus.

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 12:57 PM | Report abuse

In addition to the 30 games against Florida, the Capitals will also play the Panthers in this season's Winter Classic. The outdoor game will be played in Dolphin Stadium.

Posted by: Gary Bettman | July 16, 2008 1:00 PM | Report abuse

The NHL will also implement a 30 second countdown for all National Anthem performances. Anyone who cant finish the song in 30 seconds will get fog horned, or siren'ed out.

The Canadian Anthem also will be shown on the screen for 5 seconds but not sung.

Posted by: Gary Bettman | July 16, 2008 1:08 PM | Report abuse

Washington at Minnesota for the Winter Classic. You could do it on Lake Calhoun.

Posted by: John in Mpls | July 16, 2008 1:11 PM | Report abuse

The bigger question is probably why aren't the Caps playing one of those overseas openers in Moscow or something.

Posted by: tallbear | July 16, 2008 1:13 PM | Report abuse

John:
Too bad the old Vikings stadium is not there ... but there is probably enough space in the the Mall of America parking lot!

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 1:18 PM | Report abuse

Resist The Machine:
Prices already went up. I can't recall what my STH package said exactly, but they are definitely up.

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 1:19 PM | Report abuse

Dave:
You still out there?

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 1:20 PM | Report abuse

If it is at Lake Calhoun they will need lifeguards instead of officials because of all the wholes in the ice for ice-fishing.

Posted by: Stan | July 16, 2008 1:21 PM | Report abuse

Any predictions of what the sneak preview will include?

Posted by: Still Missing Konowalchuk | July 16, 2008 1:24 PM | Report abuse

Changes this season include the new Reebok "Halter Top" style jerseys, the replacement of the puck with a large orange ball, and the new Chief Referee will be my long lost twin brother, Florida GM, Jacque Martin.

Posted by: Gary Bettman | July 16, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

I'm already prepared that I'll be missing opening night. Based on preseason, it looks like season opener will be a week later than last year (and I'll be in f'ing iceland)

Posted by: C | July 16, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Still Missing Konowalchuk:
I bet it is just a reminder about every team playing every team, maybe something about opening night(s) and the final official announcement about the winter classic.

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Large orange ball? Tampa bay might have a chance!

ZING!

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Or maybe it is our circus schedule?!?

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

It's sure cold enough in Ottawa, right?

BATTLE OF THE CAPITAL CITIES!

The Sens are always good, and the Caps are finally back to that level.

I don't know that the Classic will be part of every season, but if it is I sure can see the Caps/Sens matchup.

Posted by: RobMonroe | July 16, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

and...... queue up the circus music

Posted by: Mark | July 16, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Hey Gary,

Cindy sure will look dreamy in her new rebook halter top!

Posted by: Mullet-Head Pens Fan | July 16, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

"The Sens are always good, and the Caps are finally back to that level."

Did you see the Sens over the second half of last season? I think a little league baseball team could have beaten them. Even more so when they lost Alfredsson.

I'd like to think that the Caps could at least hold their own if AO had to miss a couple weeks.

Posted by: HolyOlie | July 16, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

My seats went up $3 from $27 to $30, $2.70 of which is that new tax. That means the increase from the Caps was 30 cents! Those damn capitalists! Ohh...wait.

Nevermind

Posted by: TheCapitalist | July 16, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

Mark:
Thanks for putting that song in my head.

Rob:
I'd be in for that one! BTW, are you in marketing?

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

@Boo - I wish I was in marketing! I'm quite on the other end of the world - admin for a non-profit. I think that the non-profit world is fearful of marketing, so I keep my mouth shut here. :o)

@HolieOlie - The Sens were 25-10-4 on New Years Day, following a loss to.....The Caps! (who were 16-19-5 at the time)

Posted by: RobMonroe | July 16, 2008 1:49 PM | Report abuse

Anyone else from JMU want to go to opening night, regardless of whether it is on a weeknight or a weekend?

Posted by: JMUcapsfan | July 16, 2008 1:53 PM | Report abuse

RobMonroe,

I know, but I said the second half ;) We broke them. It was all downhill from there.

I'm not saying I'd object to the game, not at all. But I'd really love to see Ottawa get their collective crap together first so that it'd have a higher potential to be an exciting match.

Posted by: HolyOlie | July 16, 2008 1:56 PM | Report abuse

Thank you George McPhee for putting together a talented team that will finally take us to the mountain...without Sluggo!

Posted by: GMGMFAN | July 16, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

I for one LOVE watching the Caps hammer Canadian teams.

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Looks like Chief has a new alias. Why not just comment as "Sluggo?"

I hope they release opening night details today, I'm so excited I plan on telling my boss I'll be leaving early for it today, and October's 3 months away. I think he'll appreciate the early notice.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 2:03 PM | Report abuse

@ Holy Ollie:

Wasn't there an outside game in Edmonton a couple years ago between the Oilers and Montreal?

Posted by: LFR | July 16, 2008 2:06 PM | Report abuse

Oh thanks CapsCorndog, like I needed the reminder that it is nearly 3 months away. The clock is moving slow enough as it is. :)

Posted by: Mark | July 16, 2008 2:09 PM | Report abuse

here are a few (beating Tarik to the punch!)
Openner: Oct 11 vs. Blackhawks
detriot: jan 31

Pitssburgh: sorry, wasn't given extact dates, but late feb and then again in Mid-March.

Don't remember the Rangers

Hey, without marketing non-profits would not exist! They need it to raise money, attract those who need their services, etc.. EMBRACE YOUR INNER MARKETER!!! :-)

Posted by: Boo! | July 16, 2008 2:14 PM | Report abuse

JMUcapsfan, I might be up for it. But work and class will determine if I can go. Being a senior kinda stinks that way. They finally expect you to have all your crap together.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 16, 2008 2:16 PM | Report abuse

I just took a look at this:
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=WAS

Its nice to see that the caps only have 1 player who brings absolutely nothing to the table (Erskine) and that he makes less $$$ than most of the minor leaguers

Posted by: Oliver Klozov | July 16, 2008 2:23 PM | Report abuse

So what do we think the appropriate amount of booing is for Huet?

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 2:24 PM | Report abuse

Cheer Huet

Posted by: A | July 16, 2008 2:30 PM | Report abuse

Boo Huet. We met his request and he still walked.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 16, 2008 2:38 PM | Report abuse

He took more money...you wouldn't do the same?

He took us to a division title. We would not have been there without him. He was a great Cap.

Posted by: A | July 16, 2008 2:44 PM | Report abuse

I'll probably boo Huet, so what he took us to the division championship? He walked on us after months of negotiating that took our offer to and beyond his asking price. After all his gabbing about how good the team was to play with, he walked on us for Chicago.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 2:50 PM | Report abuse

Come on, you know you want to chant me when Huet comes back

Posted by: Hip Hip Huet | July 16, 2008 2:53 PM | Report abuse

CREAM

Posted by: A | July 16, 2008 2:53 PM | Report abuse

Wow its good to see other NOVA students preparing to skip for opening night.

Posted by: AP | July 16, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

hahaha.. a chant posted. How very surreal.

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

@AP

Yep, I wouldn't miss the raising of the banner for pretty much anything.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 2:58 PM | Report abuse

Do you guys go to the Alexandria campus? If I throw something hard enough from my building, I can probably hit it.

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 3:01 PM | Report abuse

@A

I hear ya, I cheered him during the stretch run, but I plan on booing. He wasn't here long enough to warrant any kind of cheering as a member of the opposing team in my opinion.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 16, 2008 3:02 PM | Report abuse

I goto Annandale, but I know where the Alexandria one is, and I work in Kingstowne.

Posted by: CapsCorndog | July 16, 2008 3:05 PM | Report abuse

Huet's name is now pronounced as hooey. So, Huet phooey.

Posted by: Mark | July 16, 2008 3:06 PM | Report abuse

Huet gets booed.

The team met his asking price and we all know how it played out.

Posted by: Steve R | July 16, 2008 3:14 PM | Report abuse

I'm also at Annandale, although starting in the fall I'll be splitting time at Mason.

As for Huet, I'm with Sombrero Guy, he did good for us while he was here, but now that he's gone he gets the same treatment as any other visitor. The only active visitor I'd cheer now is Olie

Posted by: AP | July 16, 2008 3:16 PM | Report abuse

Huet deserves cheers for his play last year. It's not his fault Chicago offered him a stupid contract. That'd be like if you switched jobs for 20% more salary and better health benefits to do the same job at a different company, and your old coworkers and clients turned their back on you forever.

Posted by: Ben | July 16, 2008 3:17 PM | Report abuse

Any confirmation to the October 11 vs. Chicago rumor?

Posted by: Anonymous | July 16, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

BUUUUUUET. Rental players don't get cheered the next season, unless maybe they get you the cup.

Posted by: Jordan | July 16, 2008 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Caps site has a press release up - home opener is Chicago. There are a couple of other non-conference games mentioned.

Posted by: Ames | July 16, 2008 3:22 PM | Report abuse

Huet doesn't deserve Jagr-level booing, but he doesn't deserve any cheers either. We're not talking Bondra or Kolzig like service time here.

Posted by: tallbear | July 16, 2008 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Awesome, we get LA twice. I like LA.
