Schultz Breaks Finger

Could the Caps suffer any more injuries? Already without Mike Green, Sergei Fedorov and Alexander Semin, defenseman Jeff Schultz just left the game in the first period with a broken finger. GM George McPhee said he doesn't know how long Scultz will be out, but these types of injuries normally take weeks to heal.

I'll have to check to see how it happened, but McPhee thought Schultz was hurt when he blocked a shot.

It's not known who will be recalled. But with Green already out, I'm thinking it will be Sami Lepisto.

Update:I also haven't seen Boyd Gordon since the first period. I'll have to check on his status later.

Here's for a good comeback in the third.

LETS GO CAPS!

Posted by: mauree | November 24, 2008 9:38 PM | Report abuse

They only want to move Nyls to make cap space. Instead, the need to place Federov and now Schultz on LTI. Then call up Alzner and Bourque.

Gordo TOO?!?! are we gonna have anyone left to finish this game? ugh!

Posted by: sargeantmofo | November 24, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

I agree with BernieWolfeFan. Fedorov will be sorely needed on the blue line, if and when he returns.

Posted by: Terptwin | November 24, 2008 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone know the rule on LTIR? I thought a player could only be put on LTIR after missing a certain number of games. If that is so, the Caps are in trouble.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | November 24, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Okay, so a team can put a player on LTIR immediately, however that player must miss a minimum of 10 games and 24 days. My guess is Semin goes on LTIR and Lepisto is called up.

Don't know which ref made that call, but when I heard Joe B say at the beginning of the game that the one ref was Chris Ciamaga (sp?) I rolled my eyes because we've seen him in Hershey and he's an absolute idiot.

This is awful. What an embarassing road trip...I can't watch any more of this game. Good teams find ways to win despite injuries and bad officiating...this team has taken a huge step backwards since those games against NY and Tampa Bay. They've looked dreadful the last 3 games in a row.

A player can be placed on LTI if they are going to miss 10 games. You can then call up a replacement as long as the call-ups salary is less then the salary of the player placed on LTI.

If Federov had not played in San Jose, he would be at game #9 tonight.

Players, coaches and fans should be concerned with this team. This is one of the worst stretches I've seen the Caps play, and they're making the same mistakes in every single game. It's quite disconcerting to see that they haven't fixed any of their defensive problems and stopped taking careless penalties. It's been bad, and I wonder who is going to right this ship.

Posted by: CDon | November 24, 2008 10:15 PM | Report abuse

Everyone:

Yes. This sucks. This road trip has sucked. Suck suck suck. However, to put things into perspective, we are still over .500, and we're still a point ahead of Carolina with a game in hand. And we just got through with the ugliest part of our schedule. We'll be back in DC on Wednesday to CRUSH Atlanta.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | November 24, 2008 10:16 PM | Report abuse

it's unbelievable how bad this team has been the last week and a half.. 6 to NJ, 4 to Anaheim, 7 to SJ, and no 4 to the Wild. This defensive situation needs to be resolved NOW.. I haven't seen a team that struggles as much as we do just trying to get the puck out of our own end..

it's not completely their fault though.. these refs suck.. seriously, two 5 on 3 powerplays both over 1:30 .. that's horrible.. closing the hand on the puck is such a useless penalty and now 3 in one game..

and to add insult now gordo and shultzy are hurt.. bring in lepisto and alzner now.. trade nyls.

Posted by: ovys8 | November 24, 2008 10:17 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have settled into a malaise. They hate to hit anyone anymore, so they don't cause turnovers anymore and they are always on their heels, so they are getting tons of goals scored on them.

The defense is horrible. They can't pass to save their life. They try and finesse clearing attempts with 50% power......

The list goes on.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | November 24, 2008 10:17 PM | Report abuse

this is the worst I have seen the caps play on defense in years. We seriously need to step up and check someone. It's embarrassing to be a fan right now. Make the Nylander trade NOW please and bring us Sopel from Chicago.

If they play like this on Wednesday, they WILL get beat by the Thrashers...and the Thrashers are awful.

Yes, this stretch of playing four road games in six days against teams with an average W-L record of 12-6-2 without roughly one third of overall offense and losing your 2nd line defensemen and checking forward in the process is the worst stretch this team has ever played.

Posted by: tess2201 | November 24, 2008 10:31 PM | Report abuse

The officiating has sucked. When we were on the PP, Poti was nailed from behind in front of the net when he was no where near the puck....where is our 5-3. Oh, I know...the puck was not covered by a hand. When Washington entered the zone twice in the last minute, no hook from behind. Would have been nice if the caps played for the middle 30 minutes of the game and if the refs played any part of the game.

Posted by: CapsFanSince1979 | November 24, 2008 10:32 PM | Report abuse

Man how cheap are the refs, last faceoff they boot nylander and drop it before backstrom can get there.

Strong play at the end, granted we did not play our best game, the BS 5 on 3 on the 3rd ends up being the difference maker. Ah well, shake it off, move on.

Hopefully that was the kick in the pants the caps (or gmgm) needed

Posted by: honed | November 24, 2008 10:41 PM | Report abuse

So much for depth.

It's pretty obvious to me that as much as this team has a ton of NHL caliber players (a welcome change), we still aren't going to win much without Semin, Feds, Green, Schultz, and Gordon.

Green (and possibly Gordon depending) are the only players on that list who might return soon from the looks of things. On the plus side, LTIR would free up tons of cap space - if Feds or Semin were on that Alzner could get his shot at the big time.

Posted by: Raber | November 24, 2008 10:42 PM | Report abuse

Holy gods of hockey!

If the refs hadn't called Ovechkin on that "closing hand on the puck" B.S. call, we'd've tied that thing in the last five minutes. WOW. And that shot from behind on Poti? BAD officiating!!!

Sloppy play early on, but damn, we picked it up in the last ten minutes. I repeat: WOW.

Two more down to injury, though; that can't be good...

ILikeLaich, you're about as classy as a Flyers fan. Maybe a little less so.

Good on Fehr for his pair of assists, and I *think* Ovechkin has now scored on all the other teams in the NHL... Bäckström scored on Backstrom, too. Very nice!

HEADLINE: Caps fall 4-3 amidst a Clutterbuck

How do you let a guy named Cal Clutterbuck own you on the ice? Before I go on my rant - the officials first can stick that closing the hand penalty on Ovie up their ass. Is he supposed to play with a broken stick? Oh wait no that's a penalty too. Damned if you do damned if you don't.

Sure the team fought back but WHERE WAS THAT IN THE FIRST 40 MINUTES. This team did not skate at all. They glide. I don't want to hear west coast time and tired excuses. Good teams find a way to stay consistent. This wasn't a six or seven game road trip. Four games. This was a pathetic suck ass effort tonight. Unfortunately that woke up too late.

A few observations on offense: I'm a huge Nylander fan - I really am but all the ring around the rosy skating and passing that ends up going nowhere is tiresome. Pull the trigger on the trade if it's there. I'd hate to see him go but he's not producing. Ovie finally put one on the net rather than over it.

Defense: It's too bad Green's skill and Erskine's attitude can't be sprinkled into the rest of the defensemen we have. They are all a bunch of tall trees that MOVE NOBODY. They are weak and pathetic. We have big guys on this team and they don't punish anybody. Schultz, Morrison, Erskine, and while he's a forward Kozlov too. DROP SOMEBODY - BE PHYSICAL FOR CRYING OUTLOUD. There is no fire. The defensive personnel we have right now will not allow for us to go very deep in the playoffs. That's a fact right now. I only hope I'm proven wrong. I'm not sure what the circumstances are but it is time to bring someone up - not sure if they can bring up Alzner or not with the cap situation but something has to change. Our defense allows guys to sit in front of their crease.

Jose Theodore gets the hard hat. A beast in goal and stopping that 2 on 0 was superior. Way to go Jose.

Finally - CAN ANYBODY ON THIS TEAM STAY HEALTHY? It's ridiculous. Schultz with the finger - Gordon now? This is frustrating. I'm hoping these injuries are not bad enough that guys can play through some pain but not risk long term health.

Sure this is all out of frustration and I love this team and where it's headed but there is still room for improvement. This team better come home and start SKATING instead of GLIDING. Ok I'm done ranting.

Ice breakers. Goal Shakers. :)

Alright...

I've been a patient monkey and not posted so much on here thus far this season due to the total ineptitude of others posting...I don't want to turn into another Chief. But after tonight...well really the entire road trip...I can't hold back any longer.

Let's start with tonight. The Caps stunk for 55 minutes. Yes the officiating was bad, yes the team is injury ridden and yes there a cap troubles...but that's not an excuse.

2 - Nylander --- He has to go. I've said it before...he's worthless to this team. If GMGM can get pucks and a 6th round pick for him...be it so. The team was miserable with him last year (when he was around) and he's miserable now. He just doesn't fit in with BB's system. Almost every game he's lazy in the defensive zone, him being on the PP with Backs drives me insane and his +/-...Corsi...etcetc are an embarrassment.

3 - Green....My foot is in my mouth...he's missed and he's missed more than Semin or Feds

4 - Defense (Schultz specifically)...He's 22 years old, 3rd on the team in Dman ice time, 4th in +/- and taken the least penalty minutes. Let me say that first part again...he is 22 years old...is a top 2 dman right now? Absolutely not, but he is definitely top4 and has the potential to be top2. He's still learning and growing, for the most part has sound positioning and his breakouts are behind only Green and Poti IMO. If learned to use his body more, he has the potential to be a top 2-3 dman in another couple of years.

4 - Alzner - Stop...enough. He looked like a kid during the preseason. Anyone that actually watched any of the preseason games this year saw the mistakes he made. He needs the time in Hershey right now to grow and mature. He's playing well there...let him keep growing and wait until later this year before throwing him to the wolves.

5 - Caps depth - The Caps are one of the deepest teams in the entire NHL. I've seen posts on here on a number of occasions that say those in Hershey had their chance this summer and they don't belong in the NHL. Shenanigans I say! Without the cap issues, we already would have seen atleast Borque and Osala for a taste.

6 - Naysayers during this road trip -- need I remind everyone that this team...injury depleted with no space for call ups...played 3 games in 4 nights on the west coast? This is by the far the most difficult stretch of games the team plays all bloody season. Yes they went out west a couple of days early, but 3 games in 4 nights is hard at home let alone playing on the west coast where games are ending at 130 in the morning.

/that is all.
//just call me chief jr.

ugh where was that effort in the first two and a half periods?!?! props to brads for finally scoring...but the guys seriously need to step it up in the beginning of the game. definitely could have won tonight. but way to go theo! he did a really great job tonight. sloan also deserves all the minutes he's getting...

alright if anyone else gets injured i might just explode. this is really upsetting...

I noticed someone missing Erskine in an earlier comment -- Erskine was BAD tonight. His inability to clear the puck directly lead to the first goal, and he kept making bonehead passes all game, too.

Though I will admit I didn't notice he wasn't on the ice.

I thought they had it there for a couple of minutes at the end. I know it isn't the way they wanted it to continue, but the point streaks for Backstrom and Ovechkin remain alive and well.

I said something yesterday to the effect of "I'm really not concerned with how we play tomorrow against the Wild, just about how we play against the Thrashers." I'm still of that opinion, but I certainly wished that we had come out of this game with Schultz and Gordon intact. Thank God Ovechkin didn't break his foot on that shot block, though I'll bet that's gonna hurt something fierce in the morning.

Cardiac Caps, man, gotta love 'em!

Well, I suppose it could have been worse. I can't help wonder how they would have played these last three without all the injuries. Not sure if they picked things up in the 3rd or the Wild lightened up. Regardless, nice rally at the end.

Tim:
I don't sit near 425, but will keep an eye (and an ear) out, nonetheless! ;-) BTW, have you broken those clappers in yet?

Steve:
Hope you had a beer for me tonight - you needed it!!

Can we call up Lepisto even with our cap situation. If we can't this will just get plain stupid, what's the point in being the deepest team in the league when you can't afford to use it?

All right, 20 game mark. Deficiencies and proficiencies are crystal at this point. Mngt now gets to trim payroll to adjust the roster. Excited kids will infuse some life and excitement. Trades will surface, maybe some demotions. The fun starts over. We give up the most goals on the road in the NHL? Yikes. I keep hearing about big Osala. I'd like a look at some power. Big guys not hitting don't scare me. Big guys scoring does.
Long live Bradley! Woohoo!

Is anyone here ready to see Fehr in a sweater every game from here on out?

I'm tired of apologizing for the veterans that make a sh!t load of cash and do absolutely nothing for this team.

I'm in the camp that we are fine, but, we really need to get rid of this seniority based plan and move to a merit based system.

Fehr, was tonight, has been all season a hustling m'fer. He has been dominate at times and has been able to get his shot off against NHL defenses.

We really need Green back. I can't believe how inept we are at times in this system without him.

Posted by: JSchon | November 25, 2008 12:04 AM | Report abuse

Hrmph! Interesting officiating tonight.

I'll say this about the team. When a bee get's in their butt they can do stuff, and I imagine that's what Bruce did. Brad's goal was sick, but the way goals are supposed to be scored. Crashing the net and putting the trash in the net. Ugly, ugly goals.

Nylander found his stick handling. He unfortunately got everyone on the ice watching him do his dance. OUR GUYS SHOULD BE USED TO IT BY NOW! MOVE!!! Get open! Give him someone to pass to! He was fantastic out there tonight, but the other 4 guys just stood there like dopes watching him.

Fleishmann had 30 potential shots on net. One from about 12 centimeters. And he passes???

The announcer with Joe B seemed to think that all this team needs is Green back. No. It needs Semin back to score goals. Green remains a liability on Defense. He's a 4th offenseman. Leave the scoring to Semin and get a good Dman in there.

On the positive side. There were times when the offense came back to help out the defense. Thank you much and it's about time. They need to work on the outlet passes.

The effort in the last 10 minutes was very good. Where was it the other 50?

I didn't see any soft goals. JT absolutely stoned them on the 2 on 0.

JSchon:
I must confess, while I did not watch the entire game, what I did see of Fehr was pretty impressive. He was hustling; he was tenacious. But he has not completely won me over yet!! ;-)

This stretch just makes me sad more than anything else...

Here we are on a 5-game win streak where we've beaten the canes twice, the rangers, the devils, olie and the lightning...And then BOOM, semin goes down, BOOM green goes down, BOOM Feds reinjured and the wheels just fly off in San Jose. There had been serious tremmors in the kings game and there were some after shakes today. And now Schultz and Gordo are down -- Schultz maybe for extended time -- and there just isn't a lot of feeling right now that things are going to get significantly better anytime soon. I'm very nervous but do have a vision for the team that I hope emerges...next post.

Greg:
From what I saw, I think Jose had a decent game, too. He had some big saves and played well (relatively speaking) 5 on 3. He was not great but was not bad, either. Given our keeper situation as of late, I'll take it.

@Greg S

You really have no clue about what you are talking about with Green.

None.

Posted by: JSchon | November 25, 2008 12:31 AM | Report abuse

Ovie - Backie - Koz
Semin - Feds - Flash
Borque - Laich (C) - Fehr
Brashear - Stecks / Gordo - Brads

Green - Schultz
Poti - Alzner
Lepisto - Mo

Notice Nylander and Clark gone, Juice and Erskine (our 1.5 million healthy scratch) scratched and no acquisitions accounted for in this scenario...

Let's start the fantasy discussion of our future firing-on-all-cylinders lineup during these tough long cold sad days

Posted by: MTB7 | November 25, 2008 12:36 AM | Report abuse

Lepisto. Really.

HELLO ALZNER! What is he, chop liver?

Come on, if you're gonna do it, maybe now's the time.

By the way Schulz isn't that much of a loss. He's replaceable.

@Greg S

Zippy.
Nada.
Zero.
Eh Ehhh.
Nope.

Lets see, who knows more about hockey?
Joe B or Greg S?

Hmmmmmm....

Posted by: JSchon | November 25, 2008 12:37 AM | Report abuse

ok...let me rephrase my comment earlier.

I am glad I don't have to watch Jeff Schultz on the ice for a while. I would not wish serious harm on anyone, but I'm glad he will be out for several games; although, I wish it would be longer. It would definitely be better if he was traded or sent to Hershey (instead of getting hurt), but that is obviously not happening. There are better D-men, like Sloan and Lepisto, who should be playing in most games instead of him.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone.

Posted by: ILikeLaich | November 25, 2008 12:45 AM | Report abuse

I don't need Joe B. to tell me that this team needs Green.

He is our QB, he is our PG, he is the straw that stirs the drink. He puts pressure on the other team for the 26 minutes he plays every night. We can score and win without the Alex's, its not preferred, but we've done it this year...

Fedorov is a loss, but we were 4-0-1 without him until LA.

Green going out has been the worst injury/slump we've had all season. This team, this system needs Green on the ice.

Arguing this is a moot point. If you try, I will bury you.

JSchon

OK, Dr. Hockey...

I did not say we don't need him. I said he's not a good defenseman. He cannot clear the zone. He CAN carry it out. That's a good thing. He cannot shift from skating backwards to forwards when the rush is against him. Mostly, the offense goes around him and usually pretty easily. He can score. That's a good thing. But a replacement for Semin? or more important than Semin? I don't think so.

And I didn't say I knew more than Joe B. I said "The announcer with Joe B seemed to think..." I went on to say that Green is a 4th offenseman. Which is fine. No problems there. Just don't call him a defenseman.

Please quote me correctly.

JSchon - Couldn't agree more. It's actually amazing to read this thread. I'm sorry, but there are so many idiots here who don't understand the first thing about hockey and don't look at anything objectively. Just screaming like a bunch of over emotional dumbasses. I'm normally pretty reserved, but this onslaught of idiocy is really pissing me off.

The Caps are DECIMATED by injuries! It's not that we have a lot of players out, but some of our very best. No, the best teams don't overcome that. Take Datsyuk and Lidstrom out of Detroit's line-up and see how well they do. Wait, you don't have to hypothesize. Just check the Red Wings record last year when Lidstrom was out for a while. They went into a major tailspin.

For those that turned the TV off after 2 periods, why don't you just keep it off for the rest of the season. Bunch of wagon jumping idiots. You missed a great comeback, almost all the way back. You gave up, but the Caps didn't. Even though they were playing with just 4 D.

Also, we didn't even play that bad for most of the game. We had plenty of great chances and dominated for stretches, but Minnesota's goalie was standing on his head. I couldn't believe the saves he was making.

Anyway, I'm sorry if I'm gonna piss you off, but there's a bunch of casual wagon jumping morons who don't know crap about hockey on here. Go watch baseball and stop pissing me off with your inane commentary about something you know nothing about.

Every time we win 3 games in a row everyone is talking about the Stanley Cup. We lose a few and it's the end of the world. Injuries are not an excuse. You don't just replace guys like Green and Semin. Any team in our situation would not have had a very good road trip. Get your head out of your ass and at least try to be objective.

@blanknerc - Alzner is a bigger cap hit.

Posted by: irockthered | November 25, 2008 7:42 AM | Report abuse

yes Schultz is replaceable and Alzner is a bigger cap hit and not even the Bears best defenseman. It will probably be 2 full seasons before he's really ready for the NHL.
