Tonight's Lineup vs. Toronto

Defenseman Jeff Schultz will return to the lineup tonight against the Leafs. He'll replace Shaone Morrisonn, who tweaked his bruised right foot during Wednesday's 3-2 loss in Toronto, Coach Bruce Boudreau said. Morrisonn missed the Pittsburgh game with the same injury, and Boudreau acknowledged that he didn't look 100-percent healthy during Wednesday's loss.

"He re-hurt himself ...at some point during the game," Boudreau said. "He's got four days off now to get better for Montreal."

Boudreau also said there will be some forward line changes, but he declined to reveal them since he had not yet informed the players.

I also asked him again about Mats Sundin's game-winner with 30 seconds remaining, specifically his choice of forwards as the Caps tried to hold on for a point in the standings.

"Blame me," he said. "When [Alexander Semin] scores a goal, he's usually very responsible. He was back [on defense]. Quite frankly, Sundin made a great stop and go. What Alexander would have had to do, he would have to hook him. And he didn't want to take a penalty in that situation. [Sundin] made a good move to get around him. He was back. But sometimes being back isn't good enough. You can say you have your guy, when you don't really have your guy."

"The bigger problem was having them flip the puck out from their blue line and having both our defensemen already at our blue line," Boudreau said, referring to Tom Poti and Steve Eminger.

Update:Based on warmups, the lineup will look like this:

Forwards:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Laich-Semin (Laich to the second line)
Laing-Steckel-Bradley
Brashear-Gordon-Pettinger (Gordon to the fourth)

Defense:

Schultz-Green
Jurcina-Poti
Erskine-Eminger

Brent Johnson is starting in goal.

Hopefully Mo isn't out for awhile. Maybe this all-star break will be enough time for him to heal.

IS Oldie Koldzig starting?

Posted by: Anonymous | January 24, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

BB is learning the ropes. I'm sure he's still fuming about last night.

Dollar Dog night, & I will be there!

Posted by: Lee | January 24, 2008 5:36 PM | Report abuse

i want a better game tonight: last night was pretty pathetic overall, obvious exception to Ovie.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | January 24, 2008 5:52 PM | Report abuse

5:31pm - Johnny is supposed to be starting.

from the last thread:

Once again, I am happy to see people critiquing the entire game and not just Olie. How refreshing! The Olie bashing right after the game was so predictable ... glad to see so many people subsequently breaking away from tradition!! FFS Enough, mauree, Matt, John, etc. ... you guys are my heros!! :-)

Time for the ENTIRE team to redeem themselves and win one for BB ... LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: Boo! | January 24, 2008 6:18 PM | Report abuse

@Boo!

I'm very disappointed by the lack of my name in the heroes list! How could you?

Posted by: Stephen | January 24, 2008 6:30 PM | Report abuse

Stephen:
That goes without saying ... I thought everyone knew that?!? ;-)

Posted by: Boo! | January 24, 2008 6:35 PM | Report abuse

Ponikarovsky is out 6 weeks. Is Eminger a marked man tonight?

Supposedly Belak is taking Pono's spot. Fireworks between Brasher (or Erskine) and Belak??

Posted by: sauce | January 24, 2008 6:47 PM | Report abuse

No goalie in the league is to going to look very good when the team in front of him is not doing their job.

Posted by: Stephan | January 24, 2008 6:50 PM | Report abuse

Dear Johnny (Brent Johnson),

I was just discharged from the hospital a short while ago following an emergency appendectomy last night and repair to a hernia I didn't even know I had. Anyway, I'm in a lot of pain and just trying to move is tough. So, with that said, I ask that you please play on top of your crease tonight and on top of your game. Shut down those Leafs and lets get the job done all the way around so we can enter the Popularity Contest....I mean All Star Break with two more points and more confidence.

PS. I ask that you all send devilish thoughts to the Thrashers and Hurricanes tonight so that they will lose!!

Posted by: Mitch | January 24, 2008 6:54 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, Kudos to you. Getting that explanation from BB about the last goal is what I, and I am sure many others, like to read. It is informative. Thank you

I don't have HD, but I flipped over to CSN-HD, and the sound works fine there. Not sure if that will help anyone, but it sure helps my ears. :-)

I know right... I think Greg S said that Green should sit one night - he does look tired. Maybe this All-star break is good for the team... just need to get this win and end on a good note.

BernieWolfeFan:
Awh! But you're EVERYONE'S hero!! :-D

Mitch:
You poor thing!! For your sake, I hope that the game is fairly uneventful (for my sake, I hope it is a crazy exciting win! ;-)).

All:
CSN is good here and has been all night, but I am watching their HD channel. Not sure if the regular channel is wonky?!? Flipped over and it is fine, but not sure if it has been all night.

Posted by: Boo! | January 24, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

That period definitely left a lot to be desired, but yet the Caps are up 1-0. They'd better tighten up defensively in the 2nd and 3rd -- WAY too many odd-man rushes for Toronto.

Posted by: Jeff | January 24, 2008 7:47 PM | Report abuse

I've got a good feeling about this one. I'm thinkin a 5-3 win, with an empty netter by (insert name here).

I think the allstar break is coming at a good time. The boys need some time off. The past couple games they've looked tired. Let's face it, it's been a hectic month. So take the days off, catch their breath and come out flying next week against the Habs.

Nice night for the Capitals ...

First, a win.
Second, ATL fails to hold a third-period lead and loses in a SO to the Rangers.
Third, the Panthers choke away a 3-1 lead with 1:30 left ... lose in a SO to Edmonton.
Fourth, knowing the Donald is staying put.

Juice was awesome tonight. He played a boatload of minutes (a little shy of 25), had 6 hits (including a few ones for the highlight reel), 4 blocked shots, and was a +1. He was a real tower of power back there tonight.

Oh sorry Papa, you were ok too. Only a -1. You must have had your stick held or something.

Tarik,

Was that you busting Brent Johnson and his Lost Wages trip to Coach Gabby after Gabby says that he hopes that the players actually rest during the break? That was pretty funny.
