Schultz injured, too
The Caps just lost another defenseman.
Jeff Schultz has also suffered an injury and has left the bench, joining Mike Green in the visitors' dressing room here at BankAtlantic Center. The team says he may return.
Tyler Sloan, meantime, has been switched back to defense.

With Schultz out, we are recalling Colonel Klink from our farm team in Deutschland.
The hard part is re-assigning Klink from his conditioning assignment on the Eastern Front. (He had a no-freeze movement clause, plus 1 qt of vodka per day.)
There will be multiple stoppages in play as Klink searches the ice for his monicle.

The injury bug is biting the Caps hard. The defence looked a bit sloppy (indecisive?) there in the first half of that period but probably because Sarge got injured. I thought they picked it up later though, Theo has been good. Now for the all important third period - play well!

If anyone has FiOS but doesn't get CSN+, the place to let Verizon know you want it is in the Verizon Community Forum (FiOS TV Programming section, "Suggest Channels to Add to FiOS TV" thread).
Verizon Customer Service Reps have told some folks that the best way to have their voice heard is to request CSN+ in those forums.

Shades of the Minnesota Wild game from last year where defensemen were dropping like flies. At least we're winning at the moment.
Wait -- third period is coming up. And we know what the track record of our boys is during third period.
But then again. Maybe since they're currently under adversity, they'll do better.

Will either Green or Schultz be back tomorrow?
If not, Erskine, our "healthy" but not really healthy scratch, is back in and Sloan moves back to defense.
And who gets to be the 12th forward tomorrow? (Time to put Boyd Gordon on LTIR so we can bring someone up from Hershey.) This is, of course, assuming that Fehr is not back.

For Howard County FiOS customers:
The game tonight is on CSN+. We won't see it.
I spent a long time on the phone with Verizon on Wednesday and eventually got a chance to speak to someone who actually knew what he was talking about (lol).
He confirmed that Howard County FiOS doesn't carry CSN+.
I pointed out that we got it last season on channel 1. So FiOS Howard county customers lost CSN+ and MASN2 in the recent channel shuffle. There is now nothing carried on channels 1 through 7. I asked if we would get them back and he said he saw nothing in the long term planning that shows CSN+ Mid Atlantic or MASN2 returning. I asked if he was sure and he said yes because he has access to all programming planning going forward for "several months."
We're hosed.

I hear you -- about Colonel Klink.
No, actually, they've called up my elder daughter to be the 12th forward. (Granted, she doesn't play hockey, but that's beside the point.)
Caps fans would not like her these days. She was born on Brendan Witt's 10th birthday and like Semin, is a Pisces with Moon in Pisces. I'm not ready for my real life child to be the whipping boy for the Caps.

Boyd Gordon to LTIR retroactive to when he first went out. (But does he make more than any of the Hershey guys?)
Surprised that hadn't happened yet. (BG to ITIR)
Evaluate our other injured. (Fehr, Ovi)
Of course, if Ovi is put on LTIR, we can bring up anyone we want from Hershey, including a spare body or two who we can use when we want to healthy scratch someone to teach them a lesson.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Well that was a workmanlike effort. Run and gun is fun but I'll take this effort every night. Hard fought defensive effort.
I'd say the move to take Erskine out and put Pothier in was a pretty good one don't you? Great job by Pothier tonight.
When was the last time the Caps lost 3 d-men in a game. Morrison's major left them with not too many blueliners out there. Yikes. It will be interesting to see what happens on the injury front. Time will tell.
Hats off to Tyler Sloan for being Mr. Versatility so far.
Jose Theodore - HUGE between the pipes tonight. This team shows it's capable of clamping down on D and winning without Ovie and Greenie. A solid effort.
It's been a 2-point night. Back to DC to take on these cats again. Bring it.

finally the kinda penalty killing effort we used to see from the Caps' teams of the past...
you never wanna see them take stupid penalties but if you keep harping on them, it may take away some aggresiveness.
doesn't matter if it's a good penalty or a bad penalty, you still have to kill them off with the same effort... actually saw the PK forwards carry the puck into their zone and take a few shots instead of just simply dumping the puck... that's what I wanted to see

Wow. I couldn't watch until I heard Green was down, then I had to. I saw that PK we had to deal with. Five minute boarding major, and oh LOOK who the referee is: Bill McCreary! Gee, I'm surprised. NOT!
Admittedly, it was a boarding, but JoeB and Locker were both saying they'd seen less penalty handed out for worse infractions...
Of course, there WAS blood involved.
But hey - a big W in the W column tonight, and from what I'm hearing, a solid 60 minute effort from the guys.
That last PK was *outstanding!* and so was Jose Theodore, from everything I saw. Wow. Ten-bell saves when we needed 'em most! Well done!

@grackle, CSN+ on FIOS is Channel 1 during Caps game.
Game notes:
1. I thought the major/toss on ShaMo was a little weak. Yes, he did hit him a bit from behind, but it was kind of an awkward arm check and not the kind of vicious body board that gets people ejected.
2. For a team that sucks on the PK, the kill of the ShaMo major was excellent. Almost textbook.
3. Great work from Sloan with the goal and the flexibility to switch back to his natural position mid-game.
4. I'll reserve panic until we know how long Green and Schultz are out. Guys will get hurt.

Question: who gets kicked off the top line when Ovi gets back?
I think they'll leave the KLM line together, for now, since it's finally working again. (They had a LONG dry spell.)

Brendon Morrison had two goals and one penalty. Overall, a good game. (No, he isn't the right person to call any of his teammates for undisciplined penalties since he keeps getting penalized himself.)
At least he and his line did well.
Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 6, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse
@irockthered
McCreary, as ref, doesn't do the Caps any favors.
It seems the Caps get a jillion icing and off-sides calls and are, thus, taking so many faceoffs in the defensive zone. (Well, if we're always in the D-zone, the other team will eventually score.)
Luckily, the Caps did a great job of killing ShaMo's major penalty. (Not so good on BMo's minor.) But, ah well, they won anyhow and basically shut Florida down for the most part.

Sorry Grackle, I forget that there's Caps fans on that side of the Potomac Ocean. ;)
Am I alone in thinking that a major on ShaMo seemed a bit excessive? It didn't even look like a full check. If he does get suspended, they should appeal and dither around until at least Green is back, since he seemed to be 50/50 on getting back soon. Sounds like a 55 for 4 trade for tomorrow, though.
Posted by: oldtimehockey | November 6, 2009 11:02 PM | Report abuse
@oldtimehockey
Oisk is back tomorrow, I assume. Sloan is back at defense. If ShaMo is suspended, we're down to 5 defensemen who can play.
We can't borrow a forward to play D since we have only 11 healthy forwards. If Green and/or Schultz is not able to go, we'll need to call up someone from Hershey. Only problem, Hershey's on a road trip.
Posted by: CapsFan75 | November 6, 2009 11:09 PM | Report abuse
The KLM line looked good today. They probably won't get broken up.
The "first" line couldn't do anything at even strength (but they were on the ice for our power play goal).
If they weren't scoring, I would have rearranged them as the "Good Boy" line and the "Bad Boy" line.
The Good Boy line is Flash/Backstrom/Laich.
The Bad Boy line is Semin/Morrison/Knuble.
I call them the "bad boys" since they keep getting penalized. Well, one of our "bad boys" actually had a good game, in spite of taking a penalty.
I'm glad we won. I'd like to see the "first" line get their act together again.
