Scott Walker anxious to get back in the game

It looks as though Scott Walker will get his first playoff start as a Cap tonight in Game 7, playing on the fourth line with Boyd Gordon and Matt Bradley. Walker, acquired from Carolina in March for a seventh-round draft pick, will get the start if Tomas Fleischmann is a healthy scratch as expected.

Walker said after Tuesday's practice -- before he knew he'd be playing tonight -- that while he was disappointed not to play in the first six games, he understood the reasons.

"Would I like to be in? Yeah," Walker said. "I wasn't under the illusion that I was going to come and jump right in and knock guys out. It's kind of the old adage, dance with who brought you, right? Bruce [Boudreau] is pretty loyal and I don't talk to him every day about it. He talks about [loyalty], and can you blame him? Who wouldn't want to play for a guy who's loyal?"

At 36, Walker is one of the oldest players on the roster. He said he has tried to spend his down time helping younger teammates, if asked, and to use his time watching from the press box to analyze the action on the ice.

"I'd be a lot better player if we could play from upstairs," he said, laughing. "Anybody would tell you that. It's so easy. I mean, why doesn't the guy go there and pass it over here and get it in the net? Now I see why it takes a good scout or a good GM to be good because it looks so darn easy up there you almost think everybody's a bad player.

"You can really analyze the game. You can see the whole play, things that are happening behind the play. You can't scout or watch a team on TV, you have to see it live. You learn a lot from it. It really does help if you pay attention. You can either use it as a bonus, being out, or you can just bury your head in the press lounge and eat and not get anything out of it."

And what is his analysis after a game like Monday night's Game 6 loss at Montreal, in which the Caps took 54 shots on goal but lost, 4-1?

"You just have to keep shooting," he said. "The worst thing you can do is sometimes when you run into a hot goalie, you'll see a team come out and shoot 10, 15 shots in the first and 10, 11, 12 shots in the second and not have any success and then the next period they won't have any because there's something better. There's nothing better.

"If the guy makes a save, he makes a save. The next time down you don't try to invent plays. You just keep shooting. Have faith in your game and eventually it'll get in."

Great piece, Tracee. I hope Walker DOES get in the lineup tonight. Thanks for helping make the time till puck drop go by a little faster.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

I never thought I would EVER say this, but I am PUMPED that Walker is in the lineup...

He's won a cup, and he's been in these situations...

Pretty please caps, win this one for...WTF...ME!

Posted by: SoaringCaps | April 28, 2010 5:37 PM | Report abuse

If he can have an impact on his first Caps Playoff game like he had in his first Caps regular season game.... WE WIN!

Seriously, Let's Go Caps... Varly you better be standing on your head tonight... we need goal #1!!!

Posted by: tony325 | April 28, 2010 5:38 PM | Report abuse

Good news: I get to see the game even though I am in Florida for business.

Bad news: I am watching with some Penguin fans.

Please, Caps: Win this game or life will not be worth living!!!

Goooooooooooo CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will say one last time...
"Free Walker", but it is now

"Walker's Free!" Walker's grit will win it for the Caps to-nite! You heard it here first.

Posted by: robostop10 | April 28, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

If Varly has to stand on his head then we're in huge trouble. My fear is they'll hold their sticks too tight and look scared. They looked scared vs the Rags and didn't show up vs PIT a year ago. Just win tonight, that's it. Certainly they would have no business moving onto the next round if they let MTL beat them in their own place 3/4 times. Defend our house TONIGHT CAPS! NO WAY MTL TAKES 3 OUT OF 4 AT VERIZON CENTER.. oh and for all us fans' sake, it'd be nice if they had a 2 goal lead going into the third or I'd love a blowout. NO OT!!!!

Fleischmann a scratch!! Its about time!!
I hope Walker makes the best of his opportunity and keeps Fleischmann in the press box where he belongs.

Wow crooks_c, don't put yourself through that. Watching tonight's game is already nerve-wracking enough let alone having ANNOYING Pens fans around. Good luck with that.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 28, 2010 5:45 PM | Report abuse

I have been a Caps fan for over 25 years. I have had seasons tickets. Been to too many playoff games to count. If they lose tonight I'm done. There is only so much a fan can invest into one team. I will still pull for the team but I won't invest anymore emotional energy. If they win great, if they lose i will no longer lose sleep. I did the same with the 'skins, and I am a much happier person. Now it is looking like the Caps turn. Too bad.

I'm at work a work banquet, won't be able to see the game... :(

Come on Caps...just freaking outwork them!

Im in California on business.. Im cutting out early to get to a bar..

First Goal is CRITICAL, and Im glad to see Walker in who had the big Game 7 goal against the B's last year.

@SoaringCaps:

You might be the fortunate one. However, I hope you are able to keep up with the game somehow. I have had to go to ESPN.com on my cell phone and have it refresh every 15 seconds to keep up.

Good luck!

Thanks crooks, that is what I'm gonna do...

Hopefully my cell phone makes it through (with out me chucking it)..

Beargibson...I'm with you. I completely understand...

I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I say if they win this game, they roll past the Flyers. JUST FREAKING DO IT.

@crooks_c and SoaringCaps

If either of you have Verizon and Vcast you can listen to live game radio. It has saved me on hockey bus trips this season.

The ignorant Penguins fans (is that redundant?) I am going to the game with are running late! Looks like we will be lucky to see the opening faceoff. I hate the Penguins and their ugly/ignorant/knuckle-dragging fans more than ever.

You call Crosby a baby, yet you want Ovie to step up in order to be in Crosby's class.......if you think someone is a crybaby why would you want one of your players to step it up to be like him?

What are you saying?

AKUS...

I HATE Crosby...PERIOD.

but, the guy produces when it matters.

I want OVIE to produce when it matters (like tonight). Until he does that, you (or I) can call Crosby whatever you want...

But between the 2, Crosby is the only one who is always involved when the game is on the line...

That, is what I'm saying.

Posted by: SoaringCaps | April 28, 2010 6:54 PM | Report abuse

I hate Crosby. I mean, I really, REALLY, hate Crosby. But he does produce. Little scumbag.

That's the way it is. We can make all the excuses we want for his success but Crosby is a big game guy and has accomplished a TON already.

I still HATE him though.
