Second Period

1-1, Panthers goal Peltonen from Dvorak at 6:13.

*Ville Peltonen skated down the right side of the ice put on the brakes near the center of the faceoff circle and rookie defenseman Karl Alzner skated right past him. As Alzner tried to turn around and stretch toward him, Peltonen had fired a shot above Theodore's left (blocker) side.

1-2 Florida, PPG Bouwmeester (3), unassisted at 7:28.

*This was just an ugly unlucky play. Dave Steckel tried to pass the puck from the left side boards to someone across the ice and the pass, which traveled right through the slot, deflected off of Alzner's skate and went five-hole on Theodore.

1-3 Florida, PPG McCabe from McClean and Frolik at 12:09.

*This looked like another shot that bounced off a Capitals player, this time Shaone Morrisonn. The Panthers are 2 for 3 on the power play tonight. They were 2 for 20 in the previous six games. Adding more insult to injury, the Panthers came into tonight's game with the 27th-best power play in the league, converting on a measly 13.6 percent.

Who does this Alzner bum think he is? Erskine?

Yeah I'm kidding. Put your guns away.

Posted by: rh71 | December 2, 2008 8:15 PM | Report abuse

2/5 for JT. Is it back to swiss cheese?

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 2, 2008 8:15 PM | Report abuse

That's two goals for the Caps on their own goalie this year

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 2, 2008 8:16 PM | Report abuse

reposting:

penalties are piling up. not good!

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 8:17 PM | Report abuse

The Caps seem to be letting the Panthers take the game to them. The Panthers? Not good.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 2, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

DAMN!

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 8:19 PM | Report abuse

I think I'm gonna puke...

Posted by: cbs75 | December 2, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Ugh. It's starting to sound like it was a few years ago, when the best the Caps could hope for on any given night was to be a tough opponent to play against, and to steal a few games just because of that.

Posted by: KurtNYC | December 2, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

caps forget how to PK tonight?

Posted by: sexypills03 | December 2, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

3/8 for JT -- ugly

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 2, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Sounds like Alzner's having a pretty bad game. There anything he's doing right we wouldn't be able to see **he asked hopefully**

Posted by: dcfury | December 2, 2008 8:25 PM | Report abuse

what are we going to do without a healthy Semin, Greeny, and Feds?

Posted by: windjammersouth | December 2, 2008 8:25 PM | Report abuse

Uh, what the heck is goin on?

Posted by: rachel216 | December 2, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

I just turned on the radio. Kind of wish I hadn't. Three in six minutes? WTF? How is Ovie doing?

Posted by: vkova10 | December 2, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

Thanks Katie, the updates are much appreciated!
So what looks good tonight? anything?

Posted by: oo7 | December 2, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

walk out of my office for five minutes....

Posted by: Leeguru | December 2, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

I can't stand it! Jose is SO inconsistent, he has one good game, and then one terrible game...can't be losing to a division opponent! not even a good team...injuries are starting to have a big effect on this team, they need to be at full strength.

Posted by: rachel216 | December 2, 2008 8:30 PM | Report abuse

Stop blaming Theodore! From what I've heard and read, he didn't really have much of a chance on most of Florida's goals. One was an own goal, another was deflected in due to traffic in front of the net. The tieing goal was probably the only real softy.

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

The Peltonen goal was even strength, wasn't it? The Caps first penalty was in the 1st and they killed it.

Posted by: cstoneno37 | December 2, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

2nd for OVIE!

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

I think we've all watched this team enough to know they'll make a comeback in the third period. (fingers crossed.)

Posted by: rachel216 | December 2, 2008 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Exactly! Some of you get too emotional at times. This team has made so many comebacks in the past. Stop counting them out, especially with a period left in the game.

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 8:37 PM | Report abuse

3-1 Florida pk 1 for 3
averaging 7 shots and 3 hits per period
only 5 players have a hit in 40 minutes
can't blame grueling road trip for this performance

Posted by: wendel2 | December 2, 2008 8:39 PM | Report abuse

From Corey's blog (am I allowed to reference that over here?), it doesn't sound like any of the goals were Theo's fault

Posted by: honed | December 2, 2008 8:39 PM | Report abuse

Bad luck, bad hops, clumsy D. I don't blame Theodore at the moment...

Posted by: irockthered | December 2, 2008 8:46 PM | Report abuse

cstoneno37...

Thanks for the catch on Peltonen's goal. I'm typing so fast sometimes I get ahead of myself.

Posted by: honed | December 2, 2008 8:55 PM | Report abuse

well.. said it saturday. worse lead in hockey is a two goal lead. when we come back and win, it will make the come back super sweet!

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 2, 2008 8:55 PM | Report abuse

oh my goodness... what are the boys doing?

Posted by: mauree | December 2, 2008 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Like I have posted in many other sites...Players milk injuries!!!!!
Why play 82 games when you can play 60 and get paid the same. This is why players should have to play a min. amount of games to qualify for the playoffs. Each team would be allowed to cover 1-2 players so a injury like Brodeur could be covered BUT Semin, Sundin ect. I don’t want to type the whole list here u get the point... could you imagine you save up all year to go to a game and your player is milking a injury or resting for the playoffs...remember that time of year when everyone RESTS ....Put in a min and that wouldn’t happen

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | December 2, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

ok...forget it.

can we pull theo. 4/16?? wtf???

time for brash.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 2, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

Let's just hope for a quick end to this one. Bruce has to do something with these guys at practice tomorrow, and quick.

Posted by: KurtNYC | December 2, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

ummmmm...yikes, maybe no comeback...

Posted by: rachel216 | December 2, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

1 shot only in the 3rd?

Posted by: mauree | December 2, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

looks like a giveaway by jose that led to fla goal number 4

Posted by: sexypills03 | December 2, 2008 8:57 PM | Report abuse

OK, I haven't had dinner yet, and I'm getting surly. I'm gonna log off and stop listening. Someone tell me what happens in the morning. I'm about ready to toss my laptop through the window, and that's not cool.

Posted by: irockthered | December 2, 2008 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I'm almost glad I'm not watching this game.

Plus, if I'm going to miss a Capitals game on TV, I normally choose the Florida games. Yawners.

Posted by: Cerealman | December 2, 2008 8:58 PM | Report abuse

JT sounds pretty iffy tonight and the Caps are letting the lowly Panthers beat them up
4-1 sucks, but milking injuries -- come on

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 2, 2008 8:58 PM | Report abuse

i'm not gonna give up on the come back. those three goals against the wild last week will keep me optimistic for a while.

the other guys have the tickets tonight. first game i missed. claiming that this was bad luck...i will make sure i go to every game from here on out.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 2, 2008 9:00 PM | Report abuse

no goaltending,no defense, bad cross ice passes in front of our own goal. and no leadership. I guess now that since a loss is eminent, people will now see the importance of winning some road games.

Posted by: ergoroc | December 2, 2008 9:01 PM | Report abuse

In Minny, Caps scored 3 goals in 5 minutes. Right now, Caps have about 15 minutes left. Don't give up on this game, yet!

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Bobby Baun came back after being hit in the first period to score the winning goal after the game he was found to have broken leg! Someone tell Semin that story in Canadian!

#8's line is on for both even strength goals,,,,,,,good move to bring up mink to get his big body presence.Did anyone tell him hitting is allowed? Another brutal display this time on home ice after a rest,
BRUTAL EFFORT

I'm not a pessimistic by nature but I think this game is gone. I'll keep the hopes up for an incredible come back... but I think we screwed it up in the first two periods when we clearly underestimated FLA.

We always play bad against team that don't do well. Always underestimated them, then we trail. And that has got to change if we want to win something.

Posted by: mauree | December 2, 2008 9:07 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, it's really smart to come back when you're not fully healed, yet. We all saw how good that turned out for Fedorov.

Come one? I'm sure if it was a do or die game, Semin, matter fact, any of the injured players, would come back w/o any complaints. But no, it's still fairly early in the season. Get healed, and come back when you're ready, so you can perform the way you are expected to.

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 9:08 PM | Report abuse

Disappointing, this is a game the Caps tipically have no trouble with...

After the comebacks I saw from this team last season, I can't ever give up on a game, anymore; even if the chances of winning look very slim.

What can I say? Call me hopeful.

3 more goals to go!

LETS GOOOOOOOO!!!

Posted by: mauree | December 2, 2008 9:18 PM | Report abuse

Guess whose had the most GIVEAWAYS in the past few games? Karl Alzner. And tonight he made a couple of real boneheaded defensive plays. For a guy whose main attribute is defensive hockey...wow!

And I know we're missing some quality starters but so is Florida. They played tonight without 3 of their top forwards.

I never thought Mink deserved another callup. He was invisible except for one shift in the last game and apparently he was invisible again tonight. There has to be other Bear players more worthy of being recalled, no?
