Second Round Predictions

Okay, so a couple of my first-round predictions were wrong. Dead wrong in the case of the Rangers-Thrashers series. (But in my own defense, who saw that coming?)

Anyway, my bad. I promise to be better.

As always, post your predictions below.

Sabres (1) vs. Rangers (6)
Prediction: Sabres in six.
Why: I can't wait for this one. The best team vs. the hottest. Jagr and the Rangers will make it interesting, but there's a reason the Briere and the Sabres finished with 19 more points than the Blue Shirts in the regular season. Did you realize this is only the second time these teams have faced one another in the postseason? Neither did I.

Devils (2) vs. Ottawa (4)
Prediction: Devils in six.
Why: I suspect this one is going to come down to goaltending. While Emery played well for the most part against the Pens, he's got a long way to go before he'll beat Brodeur in a best of seven series. Brodeur, after a shaky start against the Lightning, absolutely took over in the clutch, stopping all but two of the 65 shots he faced in the final two games.

Red Wings (1) vs. Sharks (5)
Prediction: San Jose in five.
Why: I've got to be honest, I didn't like what I saw from the Wings in the first round. Yeah, Hasek and Co. found away to knock of the pesky Flames, but it shouldn't have been so hard, especially after going up 2-0. And on the flip side, I really liked what (little) I saw from Thornton and the Sharks, who survived a tough series with Nashville.

Ducks (2) vs. Canucks (3)
Prediction: Ducks in six.
Why: I really, really liked the way Luongo performed in his postseason debut. But I'm worried about how much the rest of the Canucks, who were shut out three times by the Stars, have left in the tank after a grueling seven game series. It's also hard for me to pick against a team that has both Pronger and Niedermayer on the blue line -- and the one I wrote would reach the finals in my preseason preview seven months ago.

Was hoping you'd post this today. I did pretty well first round, picked all the winners though I only had the # of games right in one series (Det/Cal oddly enough).

Anyway, I agree with three of your four picks and most of your comments. I think the Sens are the real deal though and think its a Sens-Sabres dogfight to see who takes on the winner of SJ-Anaheim form the West.

A couple weeks ago I predicted the only sweep in the playoffs as being buffalo over the rangers. I think the rangers will get one or two in now, though.

I also have ottawa in 6. I'm not convinced that brodeur is in top form yet- a majority of the shots he faced in the last two games against the lightning were just not that good.

Ott in 6
Buff in 6
SJ in 6
Van in 7

It makes perfect sense that the Rangers and Sabres haven't met in post season that much. It used to be that the Original 6 played in one half bracket and the Expansion 6 played in another, then they went to the Divisional Format. And the Rangers could rarely get by the Islanders, Caps, or Flyers, and the Sabres either ran into the Habs or Bruins.

And since winning the Cup, the Rangers have generally sucked.

Keep in mind, I used a combination of a magic 8 Ball and "intuition" to come up with these.

Sabres in 6;
Devs in 7;
Wings in 6;

This will be the best round of them all.

Rangers-Sabres is going to be one of the best series we've all seen in a long time, if their performances coming into this round are any indication. I have little doubt that the Sabres are the better team, but right now, the Blueshirts can step up and beat better teams than them reliably. It all depends on how much the Rangers want it; I think it's going to go 7 games either way, and I give the edge right now to Buffalo, but I wouldn't be terribly shocked if the Rangers wrestled it away in the end.

So the rangers bring a known agitator to face a little guy on Buffalo who gets upset and spears people. That should be fun to watch.

buffalo over the rags

ottawa over the devils (all hockey fans should root against the team that started clutch and grab hockey)

San Jose over Wings
Anaheim over the Vancouver

I'm picking Buffalo over the Rangers because its the sensible thing to do, though i think I may be wrong because my gut is telling me to go with the Rangers... To hell with it, there's no money and little prestige in this so lets make it interesting (as well as the fact that I only got the ATL/NY series wrong and that constitutes a roll for me):

Rangers in 7 (Briere is a pansy and Avery is going to light him up.)
Ottawa in 6 (not enough defense in NJ to stop the Sens).
Ducks in 6 (I love Van but they can't score consistently and Jan Bulis is one of their go-to guys).
SJ in 6 (I like Wilson, I like Hunter, I like Thornton and I like the way this team plays in the post season; Wings look like a good reg season team, the way Ottawa has in the past).

I am rooting for Wilson and Caryle. I love Hanlon but I love Ronnie even more. Anyhow, as long as the Sabres are knocked out as soon as humanly possible I will be happy. I hate hearing crap from my Buffalo family, "Hey how are the Caps doing in the playoffs?" All I can talk about with them is the Redskins.

I'm pulling for a Vancouver/Sabres final series.

Meaning that Linden, and Bulis would face off against Zubrus. Maybe they can fly Zednik in and have all four of parties of that (Caps/Habs) trade in the same place.

Ottawa over New Jersey in 6 games.
Sens are on a mission and they play a more complete game than the Devils.

Buffalo over Rangers in 6 games.
Speed kills and Buffalo forwards will use the Rangers defense like a turnstile. Time for Jagr to disappear.

Anaheim over Vancouver in 5 games.
Vancouver's only shot involves low-scoring games, dominated by Luongo...ain't gonna happen.

San Jose over Detroit in 6 games.
Can't dismiss the Wings out of hand, but Sharks team speed is hard to stop and Wilson is a superior tactician. Shark's power play, when clicking, is lethal.

Bigtime Canucks fan.

The only prediction I have found all day that predicts a Canucks victory over Anaheim was from a monkey (yes really, a monkey) that predicts for a Canadian Sports channel.

I love underdogs. GO CANUCKS GO.

Hershey over WIlkes barre in 5

Sabres over the rangers (no matter how badly I want The sabres draft pick to be higher). I can't bring myself to cheer for the rangers (I hate Jagr), even though I'm hating the Sabres a lot right now.

Ottawa over the devils: I'm tired of the boring devils hockey, but I needed them to bump off TB

Anaheim over Vancouver: The Sedins have not been impressive and they don't have anybody to score after that.

SJ over Detroit. I wan tto see SJ vs. Anaheim in the Conference finals

1-sabres in six
ok lets get real here...for one...sabres are crazy insane with the fire seriously who can put that out...jagr is amazing and they did domanite and 0 playoff experience atlanta team...but really who saw that comming.

2-ottawo over new 6/7.
yes the devils are crazy good but this is ottawo's year...year after year and nuthing to show for it...healtly...spezza...alfredson...are clicking and i say its go time for them

3-sanjose over setroit in 5
i don;t think detroit can handle the huge san jose...and with hasek whos gunna have a heart attack netime soon.. seem pretty iffy yes he has done good so far but... look who was shooting on him...calgary caugh iginla caugh..thats it and like what 10 shots a game lol

ok and finnaly im a canuck fan yes i see ducks destroying thm but if luongo plays amazing like he has and sedins start rollin and if salo can stop being a pussy and beiksa comes back then mabey i see them beating them...look at edmonton last year ...everyone thought they would get pooned but they didn't...if it goes my way i predict van in 7 but if nuthing goes our way i say ducks in 5/6 cuz i think were going to win at least one or 2 games...

hopefully canadian final or van and buff...that would be INSANE!!
