Semin A "Maybe" For Tomorrow

Winger Alexander Semin left practice after about 10 minutes today and is a "maybe" for tomorrow's game in New York, Coach Bruce Boudreau said. Boudreau said Semin is nursing an injury, though he would not be specific.

*Boudreau also confirmed that Viktor Kozlov will likely miss the Rangers game, but the big forward will make the trip and could play at the weekend.

*Staffan Kronwall got in another practice, but it doesn't look like he'll suit up at Madison Square Garden. He could, however, make his Caps' debut in Tampa or Sunrise, Fla.

I'll have more in little while.

Will there be another "Dad's Trip" this year when they go to Florida?

Posted by: just_say_ov | February 10, 2009 12:40 PM | Report abuse

If both Semin and Kozlov can't go, I would like to see Bourque get called up and put on a line with Steckel and Fehr and have Fleischmann moved up to the 2nd line. I remember the Bourque-Steckel-Fehr line played well the last time Bourque was up with the big club.

@dcox50: I can see that. Yes, Bourque/Steckel/Fehr was amazing the last time he was up here. Of course, I have a thing for Bourque personally :)

jmu_capsgirl - nice links.

I like that he's willing to go toe-to-toe, but he needs to get rid if that visor if he's going to fight. Not really a fair fight if one guy has a shield protecting his face....anyhow, he does show good toughness and a willingness to look after his teamates. Both good traits.

I guarantee that Semin's tougher than all of the people posting on this board right now.

I hope he does have a long career here in DC. We need him, but, more importantly, we need him healthy. If he misses a game from time to time then so be it.

Posted by: JustAnObservation | February 10, 2009 1:09 PM | Report abuse

Semin's back may still be acting up on him from that cross-check in the kidney's he took a while back. All of these guys are tough for playing through the injuries that they do.

What a foolish statement to make. I would never question another man's toughness, but you don't know anything about anyone who posts on this site. I played football at a major university (University of Michigan) and spent the majority of my youth boxing. Im not flaunting my athletic prowess, just trying to show you that when you make blanket, unverifiable statements, you usually end up making yourself look like a dunce.

I never questioned Semin's actual toughness, but in context of the statement... I'd have to say he's not real high on the "as tough as they come" list.

Although he could kick Axl's ass! (please tell me someone got that old B&B reference)

@ rbpalmer

I may have noticed that too... and if so, I agree completely!

JustAnObservation,

All of us? I did not realize you have our personal profile.
Laich, Ovechkin, Bradley, Brashear, Clark, Gordon, Steckel = tough.
Management's lose patience with always injured player's.
The longer it goes on the more other teams catch on to it, and his value goes down.

@ JustanObservation

I do understand the reason you made the post though (general disgust with people questioning an athletes pain threshold and intestinal fortitude), and I happen to agree with your general sentiment, but calling out posters with broad generalizations isnt going to stop anyone from levying those type of judgments. Its best to ignore them if you feel so strongly.

"The building's schedule also had an effect, a team official said. Generally, scheduling hockey games after basketball games results in less than ideal ice. The Capitals, though, were reluctant to give up a highly coveted Saturday night date."

It seems like the fault is not entirely in one organization.

gr8one and OldFan,

Whats wrong with calling this crowd out every once in a while for railing on players when they have no idea what might be slowing them down? OldFan you list Clark on your tough list-- this crowd has been dumping on Clark all season for his weak play, then we find out he's been dpoing it all wiht only one hand all season, and we praise his toughness...

Semin's an elite player, and other teams go after him... we have no idea if his back is completely whacked form that crosscheck-- he couldn't even stand after it. he was on fire before his groin pull (VC ice?) then comes back and continues that pace until the Blues/crosscheck... then falls off. This group has no idea what the full story is...

I'd say 'blanket, unverifiable statements' is the norm here...

I said that I agree with the general thrust of his comment but the way in which he/she made it was a little unfair, and frankly a little stupid. Why include everyone on the board? He doesnt know OldFan personally or myself. Also, its a complete contradiction for him/her to call people out for questioning Semin's toughness, then proceed to question everyone elses. Thats my biggest gripe with it.

I do agree that people who call Semin soft or lacking in heart are doing so from a position of ignorance, but thats exactly where observations comment emanated from.

I agreed with the general thrust of his argument; Its a little silly for people to question the toughness of an athlete, especially contemporary athletes when you consider the injury policies most clubs have (policies of non-disclosure.) Because of that, any criticism leveled is usually done so from a position of ignorance, but what I labeled foolish was his inclusion of every poster on this board in his ad hominem rant. He doesnt know oldfan or myself, or any of the other posters for that matter. So his blanket statement was foolish, and he deserves the opprobrium he'll likely receive.

Secondly, the post is itself contradictory. You excoriate a few posters for making statements about a player's perceived lack of heart, and then turn around and level the same charge against your fellow Caps fans. Both claims are equally foolish when you consider that neither can be substantiated, and if you are going to give a couple of posters grief, you deserve a similar amount for an almost identical transgression. Not a good post IMO.

Posted by: thegr8one | February 10, 2009 2:14 PM | Report abuse

My two little pennies.

Maybe we could agree that Semin is injury prone. He's missed a lot of games in his career: a rudimentary pull on his career numbers show that the Caps have played 300 games in the 3+ seasons since he's been here and he's missed 72 games so far. That works out to be about 1 in 4 games missed. I think Semin is one of those players that may always be a bit nicked up and miss games. I can't make any judgement on his toughness because I'm a big baby when I stub my toe. He's immensely talented but missing a quarter of a team's games could become a problem when management looks at contracts, salary caps, etc.

As far as tickets go: I'm STH and I've sold about a dozen games this year. (I've missed six and for the others I had two seats elsewhere since I had a friend in town.) I, personally, don't sell my ticket for face value or higher. I sell it for what I paid as a season ticket holder and I've met some some great fans who were very happy to get to a game at a reasonable price. Having said that, I don't sell my spare concert tickets for more than I paid, either. If you want to make some additional money on tickets, have at it, it's a free market. I'm not a huge fan of advertising "face value" as some kind of benefit in pricing - it rings hollow to me and probably to most fans.

Opinions, we all have 'em.

Posted by: saintex | February 10, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

I've sold mine for under face generally as well. That said, the people who line up for tickets to games in Feb and March I jack because, frankly, where were they in October/November?

Besides, anybody can look on the tubes to find out what the STH cost is and go from there.

Posted by: Section117 | February 10, 2009 2:34 PM | Report abuse

mauree, 'face value' means the price printed on the ticket. The tickets have $50 printed on them. There is nothing false about it. You shouldn't question someone's integrity so easily.

Nope, don't want them, have my own season tickets.

Can't speak for others but I'm usually in the habit of selling my spares for what I paid for them, not "face" value. Good luck selling them though.

Excoriated?

never mentioned the 'heart' of bloggers here... only 'blanket statements', which can be 'substantiated' by clicking back through all Tarik's posts since October. Much commentary on Clark, without knowing aobut his wrist, and Semin too... who knows what Semin is dealing with?

otherwise I'm sure everyone here has a great and loving heart. I'm pro-hominem myself

Wow, everyone is grumpy today. Caps withdrawl, I guess.

Here is a random question. It seems to me that VC is playing less and less motivational videos this year. What happened to all the videos of random acts of violence (Belushi smashing the guitar, Chevy Chase punching the Moose) that they used to play after the bad guys scored. Is it just me, or are they now replaced with the Caps logo and some random mood music...?

More than once I have heard opposing fans comemnt that VC has some of the best in-game entertainment they have seen. But it seems liek this year, there is way less of it.

Posted by: Baildog | February 10, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

Frankly, I couldn't justify the total cost of season tickets (travel, parking and ticket cost) if I didn't sell a few. By buying season tickets and selling some, it makes it affordable for me to go to some games.

And no one should hold it against me if I sell for over 'face value' to fans from other teams. I refuse to treat Flyers fans the same as us. If I can establish that someone is a Caps fan I will always sell for 'face value', which is the cost you would have to pay to get the same ticket at the ticket both on game day.

sasha probably hurt something in the game against the red wings when he hit a rut in the ice, sprawled, and bowled datsyuk down by accident. and may i say, how nice of datsyuk to help semin back up. doubt seriously that you'd see crosby stopping to help an opposition player to his feet. all the semin-bashing that goes on here reminds me of spiteful kids on a playground- pretty childish.

Posted by: spinner-33 | February 10, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

It bothers me a bit when people call Semin injury-prone. Like he has any choice in the matter when other teams go after him. I find it repulsive that people would question any players' toughness on the ice. They're putting themselves out there, with the full knowledge that it's a risky sport and you can get hurt. What's our part in the fun? We sit on our duffs and watch. But for some reason, some people decide that they can criticize and insult the players, like Semin, for their own personal enjoyment. I'd love to see these people endure the same lame comments about themselves. I would imagine if their professional lives were put on public display, that it'd be a different matter if the public took it upon themselves to question their masculinity because of an injury they suffer or a mistake they make. I'd love to see them chuckle about the comments we could make about them. Grow up, people.
