Semin agrees to one year extension

Winger Alexander Semin has agreed to a one-year contract extension, GM George McPhee confirmed to me moments ago. Semin, who is in the final year of a two-year contract, would have become a restricted free agent July 1.

He will become an unrestricted free agent after the extension expires in 2011.

I hope to get terms after the game.

Why o why do we keep getting penalties once again? Devils have 0 penalties so far. It is amazing that we are winning but can we maintain it with all thse penalties? Please please tell me that we are strong and aggressive in the third period!!!!!!!!

Neuvy is awesome so far.

don't read into this too much. this could easily be semin isn't having the "huge" year he wants for a big money contract so is extending it one more to try to cash in.

Posted by: caraveli | December 26, 2009 9:11 PM | Report abuse

Anyone who actually pays attention to Semin when he's on the ice can count at least 5-10 times where he decides not to put in the extra effort - or any for that matter. It's sad. Every player on the team has a bad moment now and then. Semin has it every other shift. He's just lucky that he can have 4 bad games, score 2 goals in the fifth game, and everyone forgets.

Posted by: caprat27 | December 26, 2009 9:13 PM | Report abuse

lol.

One of the best lines in hockey is preserved for another year, (I am assuming Backstrom is a no-brainer) and all these people can do is speculate and talk out of their ass.

No wonder Caps fans are voted the whiniest bunch.

Posted by: richmondphil | December 26, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

This is excellent news. Means he won't be either playing one year in Russia or opting for arbitration.

Terms weren't announced.

Step right up Caps fans and make your pick as to value of this extension. Winner gets a drink from everyone else.

tominfl1 guess:

$5,750,000.00

Posted by: richmondphil | December 26, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Excellent game for us. Really nothing at all to complain about.

Neuvy was very good aside from that one shot when Clark lost the puck in our own zone unex... well, actually Neuvy should've expected it to bounce off his our captain's stick because it happens all the time. At least he made up for it with that excellent defensive play when he knocked the puck away from a Devil on a breakaway.

Neuvy keeps playing like this and with Varly's return Jose just might become the next Nylander.

Posted by: ranndino | December 26, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Thats way to much to give up for Neidermeyer... WAY too much.

Posted by: JSchon | December 26, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Flash, Neuvirth and a 1st Rounder for Niedermeyer? As a rental???

That is the dumbest idea I've ever heard since the Russians accepted like $15M for Alaska.

I myself wouldn't give either Flash, Neuvy OR a 1st rounder for Niedermeyer.

Posted by: tominfl1 | December 26, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

I am making a formal announcement. Neuvy has now officially proven that he is capable of translating his success on the AHL level into NHL success. This is HUGE! I don't recall the Caps ever having two outstanding goalies on the roster.

BB has got to get rid of Theo now. What do you think the score would have been with Theo tonight? Seriously. Does anyone remember of Theo was in goal the previous times we lost against the Devils?"

Posted by: caraveli | December 26, 2009 9:41 PM | Report abuse

It would've been 4-1.

Theo bashing from caraveli and ranndinno, how unexpected. :)

Posted by: richmondphil | December 26, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Semin signed for $5.5M, thats my guess...

We don't need Neidermeyer... We have Alzner... I'm telling you it isn't a coincidence that our blueline has looked better after Nylander was moved to Grand Rapids....

Posted by: JSchon | December 26, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

While there are many important signings, the obvious #1 priority is Backie. All else stays on hold until that's done, then re-sign who you can with whatever money is left. Hopefully they ditch Nylander's cap hit permanently (don't they still have 1 or 2 years after this year?). And, I think it is safe to say they will not be extending Theo's $4.5M/year. Although in the past I've called for them to trade Flash for a box of urinal screens, I will admit my error and say I'd like to see him back. Question is how much of a raise over the current $750k - I'd say he would command at least double that. Who else do we need to worry about this year?

Posted by: alpca3877 | December 26, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

Canes and Flyers - shootout. Flyer's fans must be fuming over their giving up 3 in the last 11 minutes.

Posted by: gonchpup | December 26, 2009 9:46 PM | Report abuse

@alpca

Flash is on pace for over 30 goals. If he reaches that... We're looking at $3M+

Posted by: JSchon | December 26, 2009 9:48 PM | Report abuse

It all makes sense. The JT money is going to be split primarily between Nick's big raise, Steckel getting another half-mil, and Semin getting a bump. As Nylander's contract situation sorts out next year then a big chunk of that goes to signing Semin beyond 2011. GM is playing this very smart and not spending it all right now.

This is smart front office work.

Well done tonight, guys. Great game.

Posted by: saintex | December 26, 2009 9:49 PM | Report abuse

Great game all the way around. I thought Clark had a good game. As far as Theo, no one is going to take him as a rental with that contract. If Varly gets healthy, he'll probably get the bulk of starts as Theo is slowly phased out. Theo will become free agent in summer, next fall Varly/Neuvy will be your Caps net tandem.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | December 26, 2009 9:50 PM | Report abuse

Schultz is due.

Next year, we're going to see some blue line shuffle..A lot of guys are up..Schultz, Juice, ShaMo..lots of decisions to be made.

Posted by: richmondphil | December 26, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

I gotta say only completely ignorant people can complain about resigning a great player like Semin. He'll be a top 6 forward on the absolutely loaded Russian Olympic team. Enough said.

He actually tries very hard most of the time. That's one of the reasons he gets a lot of stick penalties. He's constantly harassing opposing players to strip them of the puck. Sometimes this stuff gets called. For example, I didn't think the 2 min he got today were warranted. He simply out muscled the Devils player.

The guy is one of the league leaders in takeaways and points per game. He must be doing something right. If he does that while not trying 75% of the time he must be the best player of all time.

Posted by: ranndino | December 26, 2009 9:51 PM | Report abuse

As far as Theo, no one is going to take him as a rental with that contract.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | December 26, 2009 9:50 PM |

If Theo is not wanted as a rental, it would definetely not be for his 4.5 contract that would be mostly paid for for this year.

Posted by: richmondphil | December 26, 2009 9:52 PM | Report abuse

This whole thing tells me that Semin wants to stay. Yes, he wants to stay. If he wanted to leave, he would have either gone to Russia for one year or signd a RFA offer sheet.

The bottom line is Semin wanted but would not demand the upper 6's. McPhee wanted 6.0. So they compromised on one year...at between 5.75 and 6.0...after which time they can re-set the bar.

OK, GMGM, please put the following offers on the table and end the speculation:

Backie 11 yrs/$71.5M
Flash 4 yrs/$13M
Eric Fehr 2 yrs/$4M
Jeff Schultz 2 yrs/$3.75M

Sign them now or pay more later.

@saintex

Most excellent analysis of McPhee's thinking. That's exactly why he gave Semin a 1-year extension. Unlike some of our "geniuses" on here McPhee thinks far in advance and tries to fit all the pieces together. We're lucky to have such an intelligent, level headed GM.

@richmondphil

Where did you find "Theo bashing" in my post? You have some kind of a man crush on Jose. No one is ever allowed to either criticize him or say that our other goalies are better... which they are. But that's OK because the problem will resolve itself. This is Theo's last season as a Cap. I'm sure we can agree on that much.

Posted by: ranndino | December 26, 2009 10:02 PM | Report abuse

Er, ahem, excuse me, sign him now, rreally quick:

"Here, Backie, I've got you an 11-yr extension to match Ovi's contract length. We're offering six point five per year for $71.5M in total. I know you can get more from someone else, but that doesn't keep you with Alex. I know you want to stay with Alex. And we want you fairly paid. Here, take the pen and sign."

"emin, 25, is in his fifth season in the NHL, all with the Capitals. He has 32 points (14 goals, 18 assists) in 29 games this season -- tying him for third on the team in goals and putting him fourth in points. In 283 career games the 6-foot-2, 208-pound native of Krasnoyarsk, Russia, has 122 goals and 126 assists for 248 points. He's already 26th in Capitals history in points.

Semin, who was named to the 2010 Russian Olympic team on Thursday, ranks ninth among active players 25-and-younger in goals and is 12th among that group in points.

Semin, Washington's first-round choice (No. 13) in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, has 226 points in 231 games during the last four seasons, among the top 20 point-per-game scorers in the NHL in that time (0.98). He is tied for 14th in goals in that span with 112, and is one of only 20 players League-wide to score more than 25 goals in each of the last three seasons. He is on pace to hit that mark again in 2009-10.

Semin established a career-high with 79 points (34 goals, 45 assists) in 62 games last season. He finished fourth in the NHL in points per game (1.274), trailing only teammate Alex Ovechkin and Pittsburgh’s Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby. His career-high of 38 goals came in 2006-07.

Semin has five two-goal games and 12 multiple-point games this season, both second on the team. He is second on the team with 9 goals at Verizon Center."

The penalty was terribly weak. I could not believe it when they called it. I hope BB was not mad at him for it because he was just doing what he always does so well -- stealing the puck -- not commiting a "stupid penalty."

I think you all know me better than that.

Backie though will be a RFA with four years before UFA. Semin and Flash will be UFA July 1, 2011.

Hence the order of my "priority."
