Semin Questionable; Nylander In

Alexander Semin is questionable for tonight's game at Prudential Center after leaving last night's 3-1 win over the Devils with an upper body injury. It's unclear what happened to him, but he did not play at all in the third period and appeared to be favoring his shoulder/neck/back.

"He's going to take warm up and see how he feels," Boudreau said. "He's the leading scorer in the league, so I'm hopeful. I don't know if it's even 50-50. I just took him aside and he doesn't know if he's 50-50."

Since there was no morning skate, just a team meeting at the hotel, we'll have to wait until later to get the lineup. Boudreau did, however, say that Michael Nylander will get back into the lineup after being a healthy scratch last night.

"If I sit a guy out, I want to give him a chance to redeem himself," Boudreau said.

Boudreau also said that Jose Theodore, who had his best game as a Capital last night, stopping 32 shots, will get the nod again tonight.

"If you say I'm rewarding him [with another start] then that means he was on trial," Boudreau said. "That wasn't the case. He was scheduled to play tonight -- I told him that on Wednesday. He deserved the shutout. I can't believe that pathetic line change."

Defenseman Shaone Morrisonn, meantime, made the trip to Jersey and will take warm-up. But Boudreau is not optimistic that he will play.

Temporarily putting his 08-09 Hart winning season on hold.
Who got the hard hat for last night? I thought Erskine made a nice case.

I give up.

You guys are crazy to want to trade away a 50+ and an 80+ point scorer. You're all crazy to give up a team high +28. You're nuts to want to give up two of the best take-away artists this team has.

The caps have really started to click in each phase of the game. Even with the injuries to federov, and morrision we've been able to continue on without a hitch. Without Semin we obviously loose some offensive pop, but the way that Flash and others have been picking up the slack we should win again tonight against the Devils and continue are winning ways for awhile

From Tarik's late-night post:

"*Brooks Laich, with his deflection of an Alex Ovechkin shot in the first period, was the recipient of the hardhat tonight."

BB has 14 forwards that he wants to play and I guess he will sit just about anyone if he feels they have a few weak games in a row. My guess is he will sit Alex O too if he has a slump, not just in scoring, but in level of play.

I do hope Semin is in for tonight, but I'd rather he miss a couple of games than having a lingering injury. That said, I think we'll be okay without him, if Flash and Fehr and JT60 continue to step up.

One thing I did notice - did anyone else notice that Johnson was favoring his hip in warmups before the game last night. I didn't like the way he looked out there. Tarik, how's Johnson?

@Greg S - Who wants to trade a 50 goal scorer????

Fehr got robbed of an assist on that first goal. If he doesn't block the clearing attempt along the wall, and pass it back to Green we don't get a goal.

No! Semin HAS to play tonight!

Fehr deserves more ice time. Whose would you give to him?

I must be confused or more hung over than I thought...

What are you talking about? I'm not even sure where to start...

Re: Semin and Feds

Semin -- Give him the night off, the Caps need him at 100% not 60 or 70. If him taking the night off tonight means he's ready out West then let it be so.

Feds -- He's hurt (or has been) and he's old. Giving him more ice time now may not be to conducive with him still having legs later in the season.

The team is deep, deeper than a Caps team has been in my lifetime. Fehr has looked good coming down from the press box...and so have Gordon and Steckel. Why play with fire when you don't have to?

Posted by: Yoshietree | November 15, 2008 12:38 PM | Report abuse

Scratch that last comment's official I am stupid today.

Fehr does indeed need more ice time...and he's going to get it as BB rotates his underperformers out of the line-up. But who in the top6 do you give less ice time to for him?

Posted by: Yoshietree | November 15, 2008 12:39 PM | Report abuse

I think Semin should sit out too. We dont play again until Wed. Let's make sure he is 100%

Here's hoping Nylander has a 4 assist night, which would mean we score at least 4 goals.. probably enough to put the Devils away.

Hey Tarik,

I really enjoy reading your blog...keep up the good work...

I was at last nights game and I am driving up to the game tongiht from NOVA hoping we pull out this win....

Calle Johansson is doing color commentary for the Rögle/HV 71 game. How cool is that?

Posted by: _jordan | November 15, 2008 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Greg S. is right: all of the trade Nylander chatter is just plan silly. who on the team is going to replace him?? i think he should be tried as center for first or second line. Send this guy to any NHL team with a decent line and see what happens. I'll tell you what: MONEY happens. Look at what he meant to Jagr and the Rangers. I love our youth, but if the Caps are short on anything it is experience and the intangibles that it brings. KEEP NYLANDER!!!!

What the heck is wrong with Detriot? They were up 5-2, now 5-4? In ten minutes, I've seen Zetterberg, Malklin, and Stahl score. Come on Redwings!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 15, 2008 3:27 PM | Report abuse

Now that's better -- Wings up 6-4!

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 15, 2008 3:30 PM | Report abuse

JIM - I think you're watching a replay

Posted by: SombreroGuy | November 15, 2008 3:40 PM | Report abuse

i think you are right -- ugh

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 15, 2008 3:48 PM | Report abuse

Jim, that was SOOOO very funny. Thanks!

Posted by: Leeguru | November 15, 2008 4:07 PM | Report abuse

Yeah JIM, that was like three days ago. I wont ruin it for you but have you been under a rock of the past week. Haha, just ribbing you.

I wouldnt mind semin sitting if it means he is 100% for the west coast trip. but i dont think its too serious so whatever he decides is best in my mind. As for Nyls, i think he might just need to refocus, like Ovie did. he had a great preseason and i dont think he wants to be traded. But if he is, then that opens up some cap space for alzner and another forward.

the team is young, but that youth has a lot of maturity- look at Brooks Laich's interviews as of late, he talks and handles him self like a coach, very mature. Feds, Kozlov, Poti, Johnny, and others all have a lot of experience too. dont get me wrong i dont want nyls to be traded but it wont hurt the team in the intangibles department as much as in the production department.

On Nylander - He missed a LOT of time and may be struggling to get back up to speed. He's an awesome puck handler that fits into a key aspect of the Caps strategy (puck possession) so I doubt we'll see anything but rumors of trades unless he can't find his game by the deadline.

Posted by: TheCapitalist1 | November 15, 2008 4:47 PM | Report abuse

NEWS ALERT!! Nylander has been traded to the Chicago Bears or was it the Winnipeg Jets, jeeze I guess we are just going to be forced to keep him in spite of all the armchairs GMs that would dumpp him for a bucket of pucks ro something else we don't need.
"He's played some pretty good games, but he had to make more 10-bell type saves tonight than any other game," Coach Bruce Boudreau said. Bruce, you and Jim are both watching replays, because, other than last night, Josie was not wearing a Caps jersey when he played a good game. Seriously I hope he gets on a run, a big run starting tonight.

I gotta love the prospective coach chatter in NJ tonight, cool Semin is out, now we only gotta worry about Ovechkin...ah crap - mother warned me...
