Semyon Varlamov still day-to-day, Eric Fehr practices

By Greg Schimmel

Some non-trade related notes from Kettler Capitals Iceplex:

Goaltender Semyon Varlamov did not practice today and Coach Bruce Boudreau said after the workout that the 22-year-old netminder is still day-to-day.

Varlamov is officially out with a lower-body injury, but it is believed he is dealing with a knee problem.

Jared DeMichiel practiced with the Caps in Varlamov's place, but Boudreau said the 25-year old was only here for the workout and is likely headed back to the South Carolina Stingrays of the ECHL after playing in four games in Hershey.

"He's just here for practice," Boudreau said. "Probably on his way to South Carolina; this would be the easiest way. We'll see what decision we make before the day is out."

Boudreau also said goaltender Braden Holtby, who had been out with a lower-body injury, is back practicing in Hershey today.

-- Eric Fehr participated in the entire practice and Boudreau said it is a sign the winger is at least getting closer to coming back from the shoulder injury that has kept him out of the lineup since Jan. 14.

Fehr said he wanted to test the shoulder to see how it held up through a full practice.

"I'm just trying to get back into contact and see how it feels," he said. "I'm just trying to get my strength back. I think my range [of motion] is pretty much back, I'm just trying to get my shoulder feeling strong again so I can protect myself on the ice."

Fehr said there is still no timetable on his return.

"I'm just taking it one practice at a time, just seeing how it feels," Fehr said. "Hopefully it will continue to get better and I can get back in."

-- Winger D.J. King cleared waivers and will remain on the Capitals' roster. Boudreau said there is no plan to send him to Hershey.

"Jason Arnott will waive his no-trade clause to leave the Devils if it's a deal to go to the right team. You know, like a playoff team." From NHL trade rumors.

Does anyone know anything new about the Caps acquiring him?

Arnott may be going back to the Preds.

Word is though he would accept a deal to Washington.

Bryan Allen to Carolina for Sergei Samsonov

My take on Wideman and the reaction here to his acquisition, from a previous thread:

I don't think its too early to call Wideman what he is.

He's a decent player, nothing more. And he's going to be better or worse depending on who he plays with. And against whom he has to play.

He's not the guy that will carry a defensive pairing. He's a plug-in.
--------------

A very fair assessment of Wideman - in fact I think cstanton's being generous. I admit I am partial to puck-moving D, but Wideman is so slow that often gets negated against good forwards, who take away his time and space. Yes, he had great +/- up in Boston - paired with Chara, on a very strong B's team, backstopped by two terrific goalies and very strong down the middle [Krecji-Bergeron-Savard].

A good PP is essential in the playoffs and I'm optimistic Wideman will help there, but who he's paired with even-strength will determine if this was really a good pickup. I don't see Zdeno Chara back there, just yet.

Posted by: Timbo_1 | February 28, 2011 1:41 PM | Report abuse

Fehr is terrible. Get rid of him.

And hey, great job Stecks...faked an injury so now you get to stay! Nice one!

So basically at 1:30pm, we are still stuck with Gordon, Steckel, Bradley, Fehr as most of our 4th line.

Gee, great.

Posted by: SoaringCaps | February 28, 2011 1:41 PM | Report abuse

caraveli,

Wideman sucked up all the cap space so a move for a 2C will have to have a roster player going back and from what I hear the Devils just want a pick for Arnott so I would say he is not coming here. Unless GMGM dumps salary for picks......

Posted by: Timbo

and that Timbo, is the utter lack of insight Pokerface the expert provides when he called Wideman a "great defenseman for Boston"

Luckily, the Bruins mgmt knew enough to know that Wideman was the beneficiary of playing with Chara.

Ditto Chara's situation in Ottawa where he made his defensive partners look better than they were.

We don't have a Chara here for Wideman to play next to. A huge variable that "experts" just pretend doesn't exist.

Posted by: icehammer97

now THAT is a good dman.

Allen is a playoff type of defensive dman that we could have used. Carolina helped themselves.

Posted by: SoaringCaps

like i said, on paper this team has issues. Forget translating it to the ice. You go into a playoff series with Chimera, Gordo, maybe Fehr and Steckel occuping your bottom 2 lines and it doesn't bode well. The focus seems to always move towards our 2nd line C position. But the construction of the bottom 2 lines is just as important. 3rd and 4th lines play a huge role in the playoffs and most of the successful playoff teams have a very similar look on those bottom 2 lines. Not something we resemble.

Beagle, Brads and Hendricks are guys who should be on a bottom 2 line. Beagle's status is up in the air. So that leaves 3, maybe 4, spots that are very suspect.

Just like we should know 55 is the beneficiary for playing with 52.

Another note from Japers Rink:
Wideman's pts/60 on the PP (3.31) blows away any Caps D this season (Green - 2.38, Carlson 1.95) and tha's on FLA.

So he's better than ANY of our players on the PP? Wow! Sorry folks, don't confuse me with the facts.

If you look at all the deals over the past month in the league, where would you put a trade for Dennis Wideman on that list?

Much like Corvo, he'd be towards the bottom of the list of attractive players. In essence we traded him for a 3rd round pick. Jake Hauswirth is a long long way from the nhl. He's nothing more than a throw-in and will be lucky to make an impact at the AHL level.

The only problem with Arnott is the caps are over the cap by approx 49K. Arnott has $4.5m on his contract even if they put Poti on LTIR they would save $3.5m. They still need to move someone else for 1.5m or more.

either way, he's a very marginal player. I had high hopes for him after he looked good in one of the scrimmages. But he's reverted to being a soft player who won't use his size. He doesn't have the drive to be the best he can be.

--------------------------------------
See now that's the question of the day. I think like what happened the other day we're gonna have to give it 10 games or so to see. Is he the player he was in Boston (or was Chara the bigger factor), or is he the player he was in FLA. I bet he "ends up" being more than a "fill in".

When he left Boston he fetched Horton & Greg Campbell. This time he fetched a 3rd round pick and a bad prospect. 2 completely different trades. My guess is we get a player closer to the that played in Boston.

Posted by: Steve_R

That doesn't worry me. Ben Eager was on a Cup roster just last yr. And he's just like Neil is. Carcillo does the same thing.

You have to weigh good v bad. Dale also took many penalties at some inopportune times. So did Rick Tocchet. But those were guys who were valuable. Now Neil isn't the point producer those 2 were. But in light of what the Caps need (a strong energy checking forward who WILL do all the dirty work that most of our other players shy away from), I think he'd be a strong asset IF Bruce allowed him to play his role.

You saw what happened to Scott Walker last yr. Took one penalty, got his ice time reduced even more than it already was.

Maybe Neil under Bruce is a bad idea but I'd still take him.

A huge underachiever and a 4th-liner - but I'll concede your point. While DW had his defenders in Boston, they certainly seemed like a distinct minority - in fact, and I could be wrong about this, but I seem to remember him getting pulled off Chara's pairing in the playoffs in the Philly meltdown.

Like I said, I'm optimistic he'll help the power play - nowhere to go but up, right? - but he could be an adventure in our own end.

I'm not sure how well Wideman will play going forward. During good times in Boston 2 seasons ago he looked like their Mike Green...then when they lost games well, he looked like their Mike Green...haha

I really think that Wideman was a pleasant surprise for the B's that year on the PP...and it was too good to be true.

When they traded him I felt they lost patience with him - soooo that explains his value. Florida obviously thought he was worth the high value when they got him. Now we get him at probably under value.

I bought it hook line and sinker because it sounded legitimate. Unlike some of the other fake rumors that get bandied about. To get Penner I imagine it would take something like that.

The Caps would have to offer like a 1st, Eakin and maybe a 2nd tier prospect since we don't have a top end defensive prospect like Tinordi. I don't think Orlov even garners quite that level of attention just yet.

If Caps want Arnott ($4.5 mil) then Hedberg ($1.5 mil) coming with him would balance Semin ($6 mil) going the other way + give some veteran goaltending help w/ Varly's continuing injury issues. Devils have no cap room, so deal would have to balance out or it'd be a no go.

Food for thought (or not):

My screen name is BetterOffWithFedorov. I took the name because a few years ago on trade deadline day GMGM was being blasted on a blog for the move that brought Fedorov to DC. Obviously I disagreed with their assessment.

I see some blasting going on this year. I'm not going to be changing my screen name because I don't disagree as strongly.

Wideman is an upgrade over Sloan. He has issues, but might be able to help out on the power play.

If Sturm stays healthy and hasn't lost much due to his knee surgeries he may be a help to the Caps.

I'm in a wait and see mode.

@youareabigwhiner

The Caps are currently $49k over the cap. If Arnott comes here for $4.5m, the Caps would have to put Poti on LTIR for his $3.5m and that would leave $1.5m over the cap. Then they would have to trade an additional body for $1.5m or more to get under the cap.

Posted by: samb99 | February 28, 2011 2:50 PM | Report abuse

McDonald is @ $4.7 mil through '12-'13 with an NTC, so he'd have to approve any deal to leave St. Louis.

I proposed Semin going the other way to NJ with Arnott + Hedberg to DC because the contracts balance out. No way Arnott comes here unless a roster player goes the other way, and with the waiver pick-up of Sturm, that would seem to have possibly been an attempt to blunt the blow of sending Semin outta town. All this is supposition, of course, but on paper, it works and would give the Caps some goalie help to boot.

Looking ahead a little to possible roster moves between the Caps/Bears:

The AHL’s Clear Day deadline, when all 30 teams must submit their 22-man Clear Day lists, is March 7 at 3 p.m. Only those players listed on a team’s Clear Day roster are eligible to play in the remainder of the AHL regular season and in the Calder Cup playoffs, unless emergency conditions arise as a result of recall, injury or suspension. Teams may also add signed junior players or players on amateur tryout contracts, but only after their respective junior or college seasons are complete.

Posted by: Bricucci1 | February 28, 2011 3:01 PM | Report abuse

Contenders in the Eastern and Western Conferences make moves to get better, while the Caps go dumpster diving for a 5th or 6th defenseman. Penner would not have come cheaply to the Caps, but L.A. was willing to pay the price of picks and a prospect for a young (27), physical forward who could help them in the short-term and long-term. I'm sure once the price became more than No. 1, GMGM said no thanks and dropped out.

Leonsis should be showing GMGM the door and bringing an aggressive front office executive in the offseason. The Caps have pretty much said "we are a decent team and are content to get in the playoffs. If we are lucky, we may get out of the first round." That's unacceptable for a team that has sold out every night for 3 seasons and has some of the highest ticket prices in the league.

I'm not endorsing the move to get Arnott, was just attempting to see how that trade would possibly work and the pieces which could be involved. Def would rather have McDonald, but even in that event, a roster player would have to be shipped out. Hedberg, while a journeyman, would provide insurance as we've seen how up and down things have been with various injuries to Varly/Neuvy this year. No dis on the guys, but do we really want any of Holtby, Sabourin, Ford, whoever as our "go to" if Varly/Neuvy go down? Rather have Hedberg as a fall back.

Different scenario, as the Caps had 50 pro contracts at that time and couldn't make the move to pick Guerin up, but do we really want to face a healthy Pens team in April/May w/ Crosby/Staal/Arnott down the middle? Wouldn't bode well for the Caps. Sometimes you improve by adding, sometimes you improve by denying your competition the ability to add.

The Caps are currently $49k over the cap. If Arnott comes here for $4.5m, the Caps would have to put Poti on LTIR for his $3.5m and that would leave $1.5m over the cap. Then they would have to trade an additional body for $1.5m or more to get under the cap.

Deal for Arnott would have to include some throw ins with expiring contacts

using tom's 22.5% left in the season.
arnott is due just over $1m for the remainder of the season and poti around $787 or around $225k more. so LTIR of poti results in ~-$225k not $1.5m

I'm all for it. Slide MOJO to 3rd line center. Steckel was good on draws, but he and Schultz have the worse hands in the league.

Steven Hindle just tweeted "Caps addressed their needs, a 2nd line center and more depth on D. McPhee may have pulled off his best TD day yet."

He may have, it could turn out to be his worst as well. We'll find out in June (hopefully) won't we?

No get MP and 55 outta here and put Poti on LTIR.

Good day - he got everything he wanted - sucks to see Stecks go, but Arnott can do everything Stecks does and play at the other end as well.

Arnot is now slouch on the draws and 4th line has been interchangeable with Gordon and Steckel. To me Gord better behind the net = on the draws, but in front hes a big drop off.

Posted by: Bricucci1 | February 28, 2011 3:14 PM | Report abuse

I like it! Steckel is off the books going forward so maybe we can get a Konopka/Powe/Asham-type of 4th line Center.

And if we need to, we can play Hendricks as #4C.

he would have been due for about $250k for the remainder of the year. it would seem that would be enough to offset arnott salary vs poti LTIR

Posted by: Justafan | February 28, 2011 3:17 PM | Report abuse

I mean, bottom line, if it's truly straight-up, Arnott for Steckel is a no-doubt no-brainer, right?

You can think Arnott has next to nothing left and believe faceoffs/possession off draws is the end-all-be-all, and STILL see that one has to be done, right?

Umm, right? (gulp)

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | February 28, 2011 3:17 PM | Report abuse

Two good moves -- not great, but good -- an improvement on the D and now a 2C. Moving MJ to 3C will work and get him ready for the great future I think he will have.

More ready for the playoffs than we were before. Arnott can also make Semin better.

Posted by: hanks1 | February 28, 2011 3:17 PM | Report abuse

From ESPN Barry Melrose: I think the Caps are trying to get a second line center to play behing Backstrom. They home that Arnott can be that guy, but Steckel is a big body, a good guy and a good player. So if Arnott plays well and can fill that role, the deal is OK. But if they lose in the first round again, they lost a good young player for nothing.

I would say overall a good day by GMGM, but ultimately the jury will still be out until we see how far they go in the Playoffs. It's up to BB to leave the lines alone so they can build chemistry, unlike last year. Scott Walker never saw the playoffs until it was too late.

Posted by: robostop10 | February 28, 2011 3:18 PM | Report abuse

People...Hendricks is not a center. I don't know why I keep seeing hos name bandied around as a 4C. My guess is that Beagle becomes the new 4C or maybe Gordo. MP is always a possibility. And Aucoin is in the minors as well. We have plenty of 4C candidates. Hendricks is not one of them.

OV - Backs - Knuble
Laich - Arnott - Semin
Sturm - MoJo - Chimmy
Brads - Gordon - Hendricks

That looks a lot better than it did a couple days ago too. Fehr is the odd one out at the moment I would think.

Posted by: Aldred15 | February 28, 2011 3:19 PM | Report abuse

I've always like Steckel. I'll be sad to see him go. Guess we needed to move on a better center, though, and if that's the price we have to pay, I guess it could be worse.

Another reason not to like the move - now my NHL 09 roster is even more woefully out of date. LOL

@SirPelleas, nothing against Melrose or ESPN but we are taking about David Steckel!! Eakin could very easly be our #4 center next year and be an upgrade over Steckel

-assets: great on face offs, nice person
-downsides:can't score goals, soft as butter

Boyd Gordon=Dave Steckel so we got rid of 4th line redundancy. Gordon cheaper. Seems simple.

Gotta say, good moves by GMGM today. We got what we needed (the best that was out there to fill the holes we had, at least) and we'll see where it takes us. I'm betting this year is going to be their best so far.

Posted by: landocalrissian | February 28, 2011 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Stecks major contribution was faceoffs. that would be great if it contributed to goals scored or wins, but I am not sure that it did. he was okay on the PK. other than that, he was a big softie. Caps have plenty of those. I disagree with Melrose: no big loss. we have plenty of young guys in hershey.

Posted by: doughless | February 28, 2011 3:22 PM | Report abuse

I'm not sure why, but I have a soft spot for Stecks. Will miss his face-offs but as I reflect on it, that's about it. Not much scoring, not many assists, not physical and slower than Erskine.

Posted by: alpca3877 | February 28, 2011 3:23 PM | Report abuse

Let me see if I can figure out cap.

Our prorated under is 675 x .775 = 523.

You can run over 2.3 x .225 = 517.

Take off Steckel and Perreault, add Arnott, Wideman and Sturm, delta = +10.

Now subtract 5.7 for Fehr and Poti LTIR. Plus 4.3. That's more than plus 2.3.

If I'm doing it right, $2M in actual (full year salary) must come off. If you overrun by Alzner bonus, OK, still another 1.1 must come off (full year). King makes half of that. They demote Sloan. Voila! You are there!

But, that leaves Fehr LTIR until playoffs.

So far not so good on GMGM's part. A broken Marco Sturm and a cross between Mike Green and Jeff Schultz as a defensemen in Lideman.

Sturm - MoJo- Chimera
Hendricks - Beagle - Gordon/Bradley

That's probably the biggest point of all isn't it? Great point.

I'm just a lil frustrated because bigger was out there. Arnott is a very nice player who has won a Cup. Not talked about enough is how much this team needs leaders. They need people in the locker room who have won it. So from that aspect I like this move.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | February 28, 2011 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Sturm-Arnott-Semin
Beagle-Johansson-Laich
Bradley-Hendricks-Chimera
Gordon-King

Hannan-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Erskine-Wideman
Schultz

could be worse, not enough though..

I still don't like the face that Wideman is signed through next year, if he isn't a good fit, it prevents us from bringing Hannan back, who I think has been playing great lately!

Posted by: Walle | February 28, 2011 3:27 PM | Report abuse

Folks - keep your perspective please - we were not shopping for Pronger and Crosby.

Arnott > Steckel or anyone playing 2C (MP)

Wideman > Sloan

Strum > who cares - he was free

Good day - we gave up next to nothing and got the depth we were looking for...yes, that was me being positive!

As to lines, Ovi and Backstrom are better with Knuble's grit. Putting Semin with Arnott works better, when you add Laich's grit. Two very good lines.

Posted by: hanks1 | February 28, 2011 3:30 PM | Report abuse

You can argue the Caps got NO better today (incl. Sturm), certainly not in the way many demanded.

You can argue the Caps DID get better today.

You CAN'T argue the Caps got worse and you can't argue they got better or no better today through/despite giving up too much in return.

They gave up next to nothing, at worst FOR nothing.

I liked Steckel, too, but . . .

(Does that logic make sense to anyone else? The word "better," as Thurber pointed out, is now floating - meaningless - somewhere over my head.)

Posted by: stevie_in_gp | February 28, 2011 3:31 PM | Report abuse

But, that leaves Fehr LTIR until playoffs.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | February 28, 2011 3:23 PM

Good. Let Fehr get completely healthy. He needs to and we need him to.

And I'm not sure why everyone is fretting about the salary cap. The league can't approve a deal unless it fits into the cap structure and rules.

So, i don't know if its 2.3+ or 577 add 12 and divide by 3270. All I know is that the trade was announced, which means the paper work went through.

Posted by: SirPelleas | February 28, 2011 3:41 PM | Report abuse

If enough time to gel is there, this team has gotten better. The PP now has two legit units and we can get Ovi off the point. Our 3rd line is arguably one of the fastest lines in the league and its our 3rd line. To me the PP and 3rd line woes have been arguably the two biggest issues this year, now that Ovi seems to have found his game again.
Ovi-Backstrom-Knuble (2 monster big lines)
Laich-Arnott-Semin (2 monster big lines)
Sturm-Mojo-Chimera (Speed,Speed,Speed!)

Bradley-Gordo-Hendrix People who are harping about the 4th line have not watched this team or Know nothing about hockey, If you get 1 10 goal scorer off the 4th line, your getting bonus goals!)
4th line with Steckel or Gordon has been them most consistent line on this team all year.

Posted by: Bricucci1 | February 28, 2011 3:41 PM | Report abuse

GMGM had to make this move. Simply, the Caps had to find a 2C. That everyone knew that undoubtedly killed his leverage (as compared, for example, to last year). Credit to him that he pulled this off.

Posted by: kjm1971 | February 28, 2011 3:42 PM | Report abuse

Forgot about Fehr?

Is it possible we go
2nd line Sturm - Arnott - Semin
3rd line Fehr - Mojo - Chimera
4th line Hendrix - Laich - Bradley

We could role 4 pretty strong lines out this way, the 4th line has seen more ice than the 3rd this year?

Posted by: Bricucci1 | February 28, 2011 3:45 PM | Report abuse

Fehr stinks.

Don't ever bring him back.

I like the optimism here, but seriously, how much better did they really get? A little?

I just don't think Varly and Neuvirth are the answers in the playoffs. Neither can stay healthy for a 7 game stretch, what makes anyone think they can for a 7 game series?

Posted by: SoaringCaps | February 28, 2011 3:46 PM | Report abuse

If anything, the deal is good for NJ.

Posted by: SirPelleas | February 28, 2011 3:47 PM | Report abuse

All in all, I think GMGM did well this year. We didn't give up much (although I'll miss Stecks' faceoff percentage), we got some more veteran leadership for the clubhouse (which I think was badly needed), and we finally have a legit 2C.

As far as the money goes, I think both Poti and Fehr are headed to LTIR, so that will help make the numbers work.

Posted by: wocoliz | February 28, 2011 3:53 PM | Report abuse

@wocoliz - we gave up a clean, decent player and a 2nd round pick. It was a risky move. Hopefully it'll work out.

Posted by: SirPelleas | February 28, 2011 3:59 PM | Report abuse

@sirpelleas - Standing pat was not a realistic option. This gives us a chance to go strong into the playoffs. And what we all want is a decent opportunity to win the Cup.

Always risky to trade youth for experience, but we badly needed the 2C we got in Arnott.
