Sidney Crosby's shootout goal saves a nation

(Getty Images)

...okay, maybe the headline's a little dramatic. But just imagine if Canada hadn't pulled out a shootout victory against the Swiss. From the AP:

Sidney Crosby scored the only goal of a shootout in which an entire nation of nervous Canadians hung on every shot, giving Canada a 3-2 victory over Switzerland on Thursday and avoiding a second inconceivable loss to the Swiss in as many Olympics.
Canada, a huge favorite despite a 2-0 loss to Switzerland in 2006 that ranks among the greatest upsets in Olympic history, took a two-goal lead early in the second. But the Swiss, with two NHL players to Canada's 23, came back to tie it on second period goals by Ivo Ruthemann and Patrick von Gunten.
After a scoreless third period in which Canada outshot the Swiss 18-3 and a five-minute overtime, the first three shooters for each team in the shootout failed before Crosby finally scored.

The IIHF shootout rules allowing repeat shooters before everyone has taken a shot is stupid.

awesome to see some love from the Post for Sidney Crosby in Capitals insider... Thanks Lindsay!

Posted by: puckheaded1 | February 18, 2010 10:26 PM | Report abuse

maybe after about 10 shooters, you let'em repeat but after 3 shooter? that's just ridiculous

so in theory you can just pick one guy and let him repeat after 3 shooters??

Couldn't we change the title just a bit? How about "Switzerland almost beats Canada in shootout"? or "Switzerland misses win over Canada by a hair"? or even "USA beats Switzerland better than Canada does"?

Posted by: dc33 | February 18, 2010 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Such snark. For a second there I thought I was reading the Bog.

Posted by: jburksva | February 18, 2010 10:43 PM | Report abuse

Repeating shooters after only 3 people. Give me a break. I can understand wanting to not make talent short teams go through the entire 22 man roster before repeating but come on. Considering that Canada still hadn't had Heatley, Marleau, or Richards shoot yet. (Okay, those guys are no picnic for a goalie but.....)

LOL at Canada celebrating a shoot out win over the Swiss.

Posted by: Terpsrule | February 18, 2010 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Is the shootout this way because it's just a round-robin game, or could the gold medal be decided the same way--that after the first 3 shooters, they can repeat?

Posted by: dfe1 | February 18, 2010 11:01 PM | Report abuse

The head scratcher I have is how did Canada get to shoot twice in a row after 1st 3 shooters, should have kept going in rotation even though they could repeat shooters. Unreal

Is a nation that needs to be saved by a shootout goal by Crosby against the Swiss really worth saving?

That's the question that this blog title begs to be asked.

Seriously, I realize, that as a Crosby hater, I am probably just as absurd as those who gush (Milbury) with Crosby love.

But then again in any world that has Dick Cheney, you must have Nancy Pelosi.

I watched the game and Crosby, really, hardly did anything. He scored a shootout goal as the fourth shooter. Meanwhile Switzerland's shootout attempts looked as feeble as Jimmy Carter trying to convince a foreign government to do something for the good of their own people. It was only a matter of time before some Canadian bested Hiller. So Crosby got that honor. Sorry if I'm not impressed.

Posted by: tominfl1 | February 18, 2010 11:09 PM | Report abuse

The only logical conclusion: Canada sucks. I would LOVE to see Miller blank them.

Also, the shootout in tournament hockey is bad enough, but with these rules... wow.

There are smoother skaters than some of the Swiss guys at the open skate at the local rink. The Canadians look slow to me, lots of big guys who aren't terribly quick. The Russians have a lot more speed. On an actual Olympic-sized rink, it would be no contest IMO.

What a bitter little forum. Lets go Canada Lets go!

p.s. The Swiss did play a strong game. Better than most NHL clubs, I wager.

You can indeed. They specifically stated that during one of the other games earlier this week when they mentioned that the shootout works a bit differently than it does in the NHL. If you have a 15-round shootout, you can have the same guy out there for every shot starting with the fourth one if you so choose. Stupid rule. I think the shootout is a dumb gimmick anyway. In the Olympics I understand the need for it in the knockout round, but in group play, with a point system, there's no reason why a game can't end in a tie, and this game was a good example of one where neither team deserved fewer points in the standings than the other.

I note that Team USA are now in first place in their group: USA have 6 points, Canada 5, Switzerland 1, and Norway 0.

Why does sidney crosby always look like he's crying? And honestly, if Mike Green was on Team Canada, Switzerland wouldn't have scored and the game wouldn't have gone to overtime!

Any coincidence Milbury's a no-show for the Russian game?

Did anybody see Chara think he had an unsuspecting Ovechkin lined up?

He didn't and ended up getting rocked instead.

Ovechkin = Beast

GO USA!!! I do not care about Ovechkin or Crosby at this point but beware of the best player in the world and it is not your paper champion OVI!! Scoring and acting like a fool every time he does doesn’t make him great, Lord Stanley makes you great and last time I checked you Cap fans have none! I can’t wait to disappoint every one of you again when it counts being led by the false profit Alex the Great!! Go USA! And go Pittsburgh Penguins!

Posted by: jpocasangre1978 | February 19, 2010 12:59 AM | Report abuse

RockRed, when have you seen Mike Green actually play defense? I can't recall. I guess that’s why maybe he didn’t make the cut to be on team Canada. He can score but by no means is he going to stop anybody with his lackluster defense!

Posted by: jpocasangre1978 | February 19, 2010 1:06 AM | Report abuse

The Penguins have 4 top 2 picks on their team. They were just so bad that they were able to acquire more top end talent than any other team in the league.

Take 1 of Crosby, Malkin, Fleury or Staal off the team, and they become much more ordinary. Take 2 off, and they are first round fodder.

The Caps have 1 pick even in the top 3 on their roster and have the best record in the NHL. If we had 3 other top 2 picks, it would be over for the rest of the league. Backstrom is basically a top pick, talent-wise, but he wasn't even a top 2 pick.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 19, 2010 1:38 AM | Report abuse

tmac2yao, I agree we sucked for a few years while your awesome owner was ruining the NHL trying to buy his way to a championship. Not yours or my fault that your fearless owner leonsis tried to buy a championship before he got smart and did it internally. That still doesn’t deal with the fact that the Caps have never been able to beat the pens ever!! You can pick whoever you want to be on your team and you still end up losing because in the end it’s about heart, and the will to win along with a little grit and skill that almost always defeats flashy, chaotic play which is what Capital teams are usually about. Yes you’re the best team in the regular season but that will count for squat when the real season starts. Good Luck!

Canada make it easy to despise their team. People up there droning on about Hockey like it's their birthright. May the Stanley Cup reside in the sunbelt for 10-years.

I also had to laugh about the Olympic committee had to import US made Zambonis because theres kept breaking down.

Ah, the Zamboni, such an iconic image of Ice Hockey.....invented in SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA.

Your boy Malkin didn't do any better. He hit the outside of the net after losing the puck.

Shootouts are a crapshoot. Slovakia won this one.

Russia had a cakewalk in their first game, much like Canada, then struggled facing a slightly better opponent.

Meanwhile, Slovakia played a highly competitive match yesterday that probably had the more prepared for this matchk, psychologically.

The tournament is far from over. It's just beginning.

In fact, Russia lost right after Malkin missed.

Malkin is not our Captain. Enough said. And that still doesn’t take away the fact that Alex the Great had 3 attempts and missed the ones that count. Malkin probably thought Ovechkin was going to go again and wasn’t even prepared! Lol

Why does this fool come to a Caps dedicated board -- a team he has nothing to do with, to comment on a game between team Slovakia and team Russia -- 2 more teams he has nothing to do with? I guess the circus cut its clown budget during the recession, unemployment would give him the time

Its clear Bykov hasent watched his own players, Datsyuk, Radulov, Kozlov should have been going in the shootout, over and over in that order.

I think the ideal here is that Russia loses and gets a wake up call to change the lines up instead of winning while playing with no chemistry until the games start to count...

The KHL lines look great, but the NHLers are not meshing. Datsyuk and OV havent done much together, Semin has been nearly invisible for 2 games, Malkin and Kovalchuk arent working out, Afinigenov has been less visible than Semin.

I'd pitch switching the centers around:

OV-Malkin-Semin
Kovy-Datsyuk-Afinigenov

How long was Chara out on the ice? It seems like he never left! Good on him, especially with the physical thrashing he was getting all night by OV and company.

As a Canadian, thank god Crosby scored in the shootout because it was the only useful thing he did...as much as it shocks and pains me to say this, he had a poor game (missing shots a player of his calibre shouldn't miss, and just looking out of sorts). I'm happy Canada won, but fair play to Hiller...he was outstanding.

The powerplay was dire and bereft of ideas and Doughty (who looked great against Norway) was poor. Make of that what you want.

Russia...I'm not that shocked that Slovakia gave them a game, but it was the 1-1 scoreline after 65 minutes (figured it would be higher scoring especially given that Russia can easily roll 3 scoring lines).

3 great rivalry matchups on Sunday (CAN-USA, RUS-CZE, and FIN-SWE)...should be fun.

Chokes? He outplayed Crysby in the playoffs last year, had more points in the playoffs at the end of the semi's. And in the last game the two teams played this season, he made Crysby his b!tc# and showed everyone what a real Captain does. Crysby disappeared in the Cup Finals. Btw,the Cup and the Olympic Championship is a result of teamwork, not individual skill. Enjoy being bounced out of the playoffs early this season, Penscum "fans".

Enough already. I am tired of all this ranting against Canada and the Canadian team. I have been a Caps fan since 1974--their first year in the league, and cheer on with the best of them over any Canadian team. But the nonsense that so many of you burp out against Canada is a pile of crap. Shame on you. They are the best friends we could ever have. We have become an arrogant, self righteous nation of boors...and unfortunately that is the way the rest of the world sees us. And some of you teenie boppers on here (at least I think you are teenie bopper from the way you act) don't contribute diddly to rid ourselves of that reputation. Enjoy the Olympics, cheer on Ovie, Fleishman, Nickie, Team USA all you want, but don't denigrate the Canadians. After all, the majority of players on the Caps are from that country.
