Single-game tickets on sale Sept. 10

The Capitals announced that single-game tickets will go on sale Friday, Sept. 10 at 10 a.m. online at WashingtonCaps.com, at Kettler Capitals Iceplex and local Ticketmaster outlets. The Caps have played in front of 60 consecutive sold out crowds at Verizon Center.

Standing room only tickets -- like those available during the 2010 playoffs -- will be available after all of the seats are sold.

Meanwhile, back on the free agent watch, Willie Mitchell and former Capital Brendan Morrison are skating with the Canucks at the University of British Columbia this afternoon. (via Hosea Cheung and Kristin Reid)

Mitchell, whose shot shattered a pane of glass during the workout in Vancouver, visited the Caps at KCI last Tuesday and it's possible the rugged defenseman will make a decision on his future sometime this week.

any new news on the 'trade' that will allow for the announcement of the belanger signing?

Capt Kirk: If I'm going to make the game Feb 14 in Phoenix, when do you recommend buying tickets?

Great, hopefully BMo isn't filling Mitchell's head with negative views about Bruce Boudreau's coaching.

Posted by: chombie13 | August 23, 2010 4:33 PM | Report abuse

Just to clarify... not that I personally wouldn't AGREE with such criticisms of BB's coaching (or lack theerof) but since I'd love Mitchell to sign with the Caps, I'm hoping that BMo keeps his mouth shut for now.

@chombie13. Who says Bmo didn't like BB as a coach? I don't remember him saying anything in public that would make you believe that. He might have wanted to come back if we had room for him.

Posted by: icehammer97 | August 23, 2010 4:52 PM | Report abuse

@icehammer97

after the season, he told the vancouver paper that BB made no adjustments on the PP and little elsewhere in the series against MTL.

Posted by: ThePat | August 23, 2010 4:59 PM | Report abuse

iirc BMO clearly criticized Bruce. And then a smattering of the usual suspects claimed it was just sour grapes or something. Same fans who claimed that Umberger's comments weren't valid because he either apparently hated the Caps from when he was a Flyer or he was just jealous of us or something.

Posted by: cstanton1 | August 23, 2010 4:59 PM | Report abuse

at least I believe that is what happened and what chombie is referring to.

Posted by: ThePat | August 23, 2010 5:00 PM | Report abuse

“You can say what you like about how our season ended, how Montreal played, officiating, anything but we were one for 34 on the power play and we went the whole series without making any adjustments,” said Morrison. “That's just not going to work.”

Posted by: cstanton1 | August 23, 2010 5:04 PM | Report abuse

remember the Flyer series when the Flyers in game 2 started creating traffic in our crease and interfering with our goalie? Thats when they started getting some offensive momentum after generating very little before that.

Bruce didn't make any changes or adjustments there either. The Flyers were allowed to do whatever they wanted in our crease area. No surprise that the critical goal came on a play where their forward rammed our dman into the goalie. By that time in the series they were fully comfortable skating thru that crease area.

cstanton: I remember watching Peake getting hurt vs Pens in 1996 playoffs. We had just moved to FL then. Don't know who he was racing against to prevent the icing. Terrible, because he was a Canadian Jr Player of the Year and had a really bright future.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | August 23, 2010 5:14 PM | Report abuse

i remember being a bit frustrated with Peake initially because he seemed soft. But then he started to finish his checks and consequently get more scoring chances out of it. Like it just clicked for him the way it tends to do with certain players who figure out they need to amend their style a bit for the nhl. And he looked like a really good option for us as a gritty scoring line forward. And then he got hurt.

Posted by: cstanton1 | August 23, 2010 5:24 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton1

King has been a regular when healthy.
---------

you know why he's been a regular? its because the Blues really like that sort of player and they believe in giving him every chance. Why do you think Colton Orr's ice time under Tortorella was negligible and suddenly as a Leaf he's getting to play on the 3rd line? Players' ice times are reflective of their coach and GM's like or dislike or a particular style of play. PEriod.

How many teams do you think would've played George Parros, Brad May, and Shawn Thornton in the same game same line in the Stanley Cup playoffs? That was a reflection of Randy Carlyle and Brian Burke being of the same mindset. There are players who get different ice time on different teams. And a player who gets more ice time isn't necessarily better than his counterpart on another team. He's just lucky to be in a situation where his coach and GM find his style of play to be valuable. In many other lineups, DJK would not be a 'regular' as you put it.

and please.... i've known about DJK from his first yr in the minors. I follow that type of stuff pretty closely, I don't need to watch any more tape of him. I've seen plenty of clips of King. His hitting, his fighting, his skating. And I've been a fan. But no more a fan of his than dozens of other similar AHL/NHL players over the yrs. And I've been a fan of Asham's since he first got called up to Montreal. He was supposed to be the draft pick that made Habs fans forget about a kid named Terry Ryan who ended up being a bust.

"i remember being a bit frustrated with Peake initially because he seemed soft."
I think Schoenfeld had something to do with changing that. And I think it was Daigneault who was in the race for the icing with Peake.

I really liked him thought he could become a 25-40 goal scorer (which would have really helped the caps in those years). He started putting up pretty good numbers before he got hurt.

Posted by: BorntoHula | August 23, 2010 5:57 PM | Report abuse

turns out that heel injury wasn't the end, just the beginning of the end. He crushed his heel which doctors said was the type of injury they see in construction workers who fall from heights (scaffolding etc). Then he broke his hand while in the minors. Then he got into a car accident and got a concussion. Then he came back to the Caps the following yr and tore all his ankle tendons in his first game back. That was the last game he played i think.

good call on Daigneault. I think you're right. Wasn't it also Daigneault who slashed Calle Jo and gave him nerve damage in his leg?

I'd like to see Mitchill signed because the Caps need that sort of defenseman for their blueline. His concussions are a concern, but at least he won't he waving a wet noodle at a Flyer or Penguin or Hab parked in the Cap's crease.

"Meanwhile back on the free-agent watch, Willie Mitchell and former Capital Brendan Morrison are skating with the Canucks at the University of British Columbia this afternoon."

I think we can pretty much move on from Mitchell. It sure sounds like he's staying in Vancouver. So...are there any plan B's to our defensive deficiencies or are we stuck with guys like Poti who hits less than guys who play in NON-CHECKING leagues?

Posted by: jimc93 | August 24, 2010 7:23 AM | Report abuse

@jimc93

There is still trade rumors involving Bieksa and Souray (with Flash, Chimera, and a couple other names tossed around).

And Mitchell may be skating in Vancouver, but someone else posted that their LA buddies thought they have all but signed him. We reported he was very pleased with his visit here. Not to mention everyone was saying he was expected to announce his decision by the end of last week, then he was supposed to announce it on Monday. This leads me to believe that nobody really knows for sure where he is going to end up just yet. :)

And Cwiseman had it right, they SRO seats are on the ends where the Red Rockets...err Rockers cheer sometimes. That way them standing doesnt obstruct anyones view. I want to say in playoffs they were like $100 a game.

An Edmonton blog written by Richard Cloutier is suggesting that Alzner could be available for the right price. “ Also on the subject of players from the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, apparently defenseman Karl Alzner might be available from Washington for the right price. Alzner is a big body (6'3" 206 lbs) and was drafted from the Calgary Hitmen where he was known for being a lethal combination of size, hitting, and a cannon from the point. Hmmm...Tomas Fleischmann and Alzner from Washington for....fill in the blanks, someone please.”

Posted by: MReilly9 | August 24, 2010 9:18 AM | Report abuse

@MReilly9

The return on that would have to be pretty large. Especially considering Alzner's team friendly contract status. I highly doubt Alzner will be dealt but it is intriguing though.

Posted by: sgm3 | August 24, 2010 9:27 AM | Report abuse

@sgm3

I agree about Alzner. Trading Flash and Alzner would probably be giving up too much for Souray and his very large contract.

Posted by: MReilly9 | August 24, 2010 9:36 AM | Report abuse

If McPhee trades Alzner now, he should be removed. He has been holding on to this kid for 3 years. He hasn't traded him, when his return could have pushed us over the hump. He played game 7, and played well.

Alzner isn't going anywhere. He is top 6, top 4 soon.

This offseason has sucked. Everyday, I hope something happens, but nothing ever does.

We are all in "hockey purgatory" since late April. Is it all because of Kovalchuk?

Posted by: underpants2 | August 24, 2010 9:39 AM | Report abuse

To get Souray, Flash/Chimera, or Flash/Erskine. They are desperate to rid themselves of Souray. If they want to get rid of him, they need to take a bad contract from us.

They still save money next year, which is what they want.

Posted by: underpants2 | August 24, 2010 9:46 AM | Report abuse

Souray is still a 5.4 hit this year and next. This year is doable if you basically do nothing else (don't we need a #2 center even more?), but with Laich, Alzner, Semin, Brads, Varly and Neuvy up for new deals next season, we can't afford it.

Nancy Reagan says, "Just say 'No' to Sheldon Souray."

Posted by: tominsocal1 | August 24, 2010 10:32 AM | Report abuse

I don't think you are going to see any team trade for Souray. Edmonton is going to try right up until camp. If they cant get it done, they will bite the bullet and put him through waivers/ re-entry waivers and let a team pick him up for half the cap hit. That is my prediciton.

Posted by: ThePat | August 24, 2010 10:39 AM | Report abuse

tominsocal1, you seem to have done a good job getting familiar with salary speak. If a team picks up a player like Souray they only get THIS season at 50%, right? Any follow-on years the new team pays full price. The season the player is picked up at 50% is only because the team, in this case Edmonton, pays half the salary. Next year Edmonton would be free of the contract completely and the new team assumes everything. Is that right tominsocal1?

Posted by: fanohock1 | August 24, 2010 10:49 AM | Report abuse

@fanohock

reentry waivers apply to the life of the contract as far as I know. So both seasons Edmonton would receive a $2.7 cap hit and the team picking him up would face the same cap hit as well.

Posted by: ThePat | August 24, 2010 10:52 AM | Report abuse

edmonton already put souray through waivers this summer and one picked him up. Why would we trade alzner if we could have got souray for nothing?

Posted by: _stevo | August 24, 2010 11:00 AM | Report abuse

Souray at half price makes sense to me. He has enough stature in the league to be able to set a tone for the other d-men. You'd like to think Green would be that guy, but I just don't see it, at least not yet. I don't see Bieksa having that kind of stature - he would be more likely to just blend in. Mitchell might work, if he isn't gun-shy because of the concussions and if he could hold up health-wise (which are big "ifs" IMO).

Posted by: zmega | August 24, 2010 11:01 AM | Report abuse

*no one picked him up

Posted by: _stevo | August 24, 2010 11:04 AM | Report abuse

The Caps, or any other NHL team, could have had Souray for free. He is extremely overpaid which is why no one wants him. In addition, he has two more years on his contract.

I think he makes more per year than what any of the UFA defensemen signed for this year.

There are also injury concerns and his concerns about his lack of speed which has become worse because of his injuries and age.

If the Caps are going to spend $5.4M on a D-man they should just give it to Mitchell because he would absolutely sign with the Caps if offered a 2 year $10.8M deal.

Posted by: sgm3 | August 24, 2010 11:23 AM | Report abuse

Stop talking about Souray - it will never happen. It was a rumor that has since been de-bunked.

Why would we want him and his salary anyway? Sorry - don't answer that - I don't want to keep this silly conversation going.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | August 24, 2010 11:35 AM | Report abuse

fanohock: Re-entry waivers apply for life of contract. Dallas is still paying on Avery till the 4 yrs are up.

Souray at 2.7 does make some sense, but if they put him on re-entry waivers some team before Caps might well snatch. BTW, Edm is way under the cap. They are much better to go re-entry and pay half than bury in minors and have no cap hit but pay whole salary. His actual salary next two years are 4.5 + 4.5 = 9.0 but cap hit 5.4 + 5.4 = 10.8.

1) Alzner is NOT getting traded!

should we trade for Souray, it better be Flash and Erskine for Souray and high picks!

disagree on Alzner. I've heard he's already been offered up in packages and no one's bitten. His trade value isn't as high as some caps fans may think.

I was wondering if somehow Alzner for Sam Gagner could be included in any Edmonton trade possibility.

Posted by: tominsocal1 | August 24, 2010 12:13 PM | Report abuse

@Frank - I stated this last week about Mitchell. Thru my contacts & everything I've read/seen etc it appears as if he wants to stay in Vancouver. Vancouver would like him as well but they aren't convinced yet that his health can withstand an entire season which is why he's working out so much in Vancouver. IF Van decides he is healthy enough they then have to clear some space which appears to be Bieska. So like many things this offseason it's just wait and wait and wait.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | August 24, 2010 12:15 PM | Report abuse

Gagner seems to be a bit injury prone as he has yet to play an entire NHL season. Looks like he misses 15 or so games per year on average.

The Rangers would match any signing of Staal unless it was inredibly high.

Phil - As far as Staal is concerned it would definately have to happen in a trade. I can't imagine any team having the ability to offer him something the Rags couldn't match. You need players like him to win Cups. The problem from a Rags perspective is they're missing a lot of the other components it takes as well.

As great an idea as it would be to swoop in and sign Staal to an offer sheet we can't for the salary expected. $3.9M-$5.2M the compensation we'd owe the Rangers would be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick. We do not have a 2nd round pick this year, it was traded to Carolina or Minnesota, so we cant make the type of offer it would require for the Rangers to contemplate walking away from it.

i get the slaney and woolley references, but brad church? actually slaney and woolley were both offensive dmen. I think the way Alzner plays D \he looks more like Nolan Baumgartner does. Alzner just goes and holds players up along the boards. He is unable to effectively separate them from the puck and kill the offensive possession. Defensemen don't get too many opportunities to get to a forward when he has the puck. If you blow those chances to jar that puck loose and clear it, it usually leads to extended chances in your end. That's how Baumgartner used to play D. He skated well, but didn't have the strength to push forwards off the puck the way a Carlson does.

i don't think its too much as long as we can acquire Bieksa or Mitchell. Then losing Sarge for Staal is worth it. Dropping an Erskine in there instead of Sarge won't get it done. And how does it set us back that much? MaJo is probably 2 maybe even 3 yrs away from being a strong nhl center. Flash is already replaceable since we have some depth at the wing position now. In essence we're replacing two young dmen (Alz, Sarge) with one young dman (staal). But you get back a legitimate strong defensive dman who can handle playoff type hockey and match up with the big physical forwards on our rival teams. And if you get Mitch or Bieksa than your top 4 is set. And I can live with a bottom 2 pairing of Poti/Erskine.

I must admit that this is getting beyond ridiulous at this point. Training camp is less than a month away and there are a TON of FA/UFA's still unsigned. This debacle that is the Kovy contract seems to be the thing that has just completely screwed this whole off-season up....I am really beginning to despise the guy and wish he would just go back and sign in Russia already!

backstrom and duby with the 1-2 punch at center

and

Green-Staal
Carlson-Mitchell

as your top 4.

that isn't worth givng up Sarge, MaJo, Flash, and Alzner?

----

I must admit you make a compelling point but I think you have to look well past that...
Would you take Flash and Erskine for Beiksa?
and a signed Mitchell?
if yes, then you have this:
Green-Mitchell
Bieksa-Poti
Carlson-Schultz
Alzner-Sloan

while your points about getting Staal is a good one, I think that MoJo and Alzner together will be worth more than Staal alone in the long run!

The Canucks NHL site has video of Mitchell. He's very noncommittal about where he wants to go though says he's pleased with the caliber of teams interested--all strong SC candidates.

BTW I haven't read or heard any rumors of trades involving Alzner. Source please! Or is it like the Souray rumors--probably started by unreliable tweets.

Capt Kirk? Speak to me brotha man!

Posted by: pokerface1208 | August 24, 2010 12:26 PM

i'll be at the phx game but i don't think i'll be doing any road trips - i'd like too but i'd much rather dump some money into my mustang and get AC put in it. it's h*ll to have a car like that and not be able to drive it much from mid may thru early oct.
i'll be keeping my eye open for when single game tix go on sale. i'm pretty sure i'm going to try and get tix in the lower bowl near mid ice ($80) or at the cap O zone for 2 periods ($45) across from the benches.

Capt Kirk, well let me know as soon as you can when tix go on sale. I typically sit behind the net the Caps shoot 2x. It's my favorite part of the rink anyway. Honestly I'll sit anywhere though. Lower bowl preferred.

Tom - are you in? I'm gonna put this in my calendar.

What I'll do is just send the $ to Capt Kirk so he can get our tix all at 1 time if that works for you Capt.

Didn't PHO get a new arena? I remember the old one. I was never there but I remember seeing pix of the upper level almost directly on top of the ice!

Yes, I will go for the PHX game and will need to advise on 1, 2 or 3 tix. I will further question them tonight for commitment. I will have to watch and see for tix to Anaheim Wed Feb 16. At SJ Thu Feb 17 might be tough due to they sell out. I'll start checking. Pokerface: do you have a source for acquiring tickets as out-of-town fans? Places like Tampa and Florida were easy since they didn't sell out. We would get "family plan."

pokerface1208:
i just called the yotes about when tix go on sale - in about two weeks
sections 113->121 (blue line around behind goal to the other blue line) in the lower bowl are $45 per ticket.
118->121 don't have a very good view of the benches
sections 101 & 122 (behind benches) and 111 & 112 (across from benches) are between the blue lines at $80 per ticket
if you and tom would like to get an idea of what you can see on the ice - use this link: http://www.seats3d.com/nhl/phoenix_coyotes/
i believe the caps would be shooting twice at the north end of the rink - near coyotes blvd.
i wouldn't mind picking up the tickets once preferred seats are choosen.

the old arena (america west - now u.s. airways) was not build for hockey - one end almost completely 'overhung' one of the goals - so there were many obstructed view seats on that end. they now play in jobing.com arena on the west side of phx - about as far away from where i am as they could get and still be considered phx.

I like Mark Staal's style of play, I really do. However, he hasn't proven himself in the playoffs either. Green and Schultz have been labled regular season players that don't perform in the playoffs, how is Staal any different?

Posted by: fanohock1 | August 24, 2010 1:56 PM | Report abuse

depends what you consider "proving" yourself. I think sometimes we get caught up in making blanket statements. The knock on Green is that he hasn't produced points in the playoffs. Frankly, that's not my area of concern with him. I want him to play D. He didn't play it against Philly except for an odd play here and there. He started to play it v the Rags and then got hurt. I thought this past playoffs he was hustling hard and was physical so that was a step up even though he made some questionable decisions.

Sarge has been hurt or benched until this past playoffs. He was pretty steady but he didn't really step up v the Habs. He likes a calm nonfiesty type of game and the Habs for the most part accomodated him. I'd like to see him in 2 or 3 intense physical affairs to see how he'd measure up.

Staal will be fine in the playoffs. He plays a simple hardnosed game and he skates well enough to go against the opposition's top lines.

Capt - nice work. I'll check er out and see what we want to do.

Tom - yes I have contacts in LA and SJ. I have contacts everywhere buddy! LOL! So I can work something out and get us tix my question is this, how are you planning on going from Pho to Ana and then to SJ? How much of a drive or train is it from Ana to SJ?

Posted by: pokerface1208 | August 24, 2010 4:29 PM | Report abuse

PF: I will drive over toward Phoenix on Sunday I believe, using the family auto. Sunday and Monday will be for sightseeing on SE CA and western AZ. Hotel Monday night, hearing where the arena is, would be west part of Phoenix (which town is arena in?). PHX to ANA is about 250 miles, mostly I-10 west. Trains? I don't know. Tuesday is an off day, so you can either stay near Phx or be in LA. I might go to SD to my other daughter.

Ana to SJ is about 350 miles up I-5 mostly. Again, I don't know about trains. You would leave about 10 am Thu morning after commuter traffic. It should take 6 hrs driving I would think.

You don't want a rental car I'm thinking because the drop-off charge is like 50/cents a mile so would be about $300 + all the taxes. Maybe though cheaper than train.
