Sloan Recalled (Updated)

In a bit of a surprise, Tyler Sloan has been recalled and is on the ice for the morning skate. The other six defensemen, including Karl Alzner, are out there, as well.

Update: Sloan is here because Jeff Schultz is hurting. The Caps haven't said exactly what's wrong, but I think it would be safe to assume that it's his finger again.

Meantime, it looks as though Alzner will be in the lineup tonight against the banged-up Blue Jackets. Sergei Fedorov and Tomas Fleischmann also appear to be set to return. If that is indeed the case, based on yesterday's practice, that would mean Eric Fehr and Michael Nylander are out.

I hope to have a salary cap update in a little bit.

Are they going to send down Sean Collins? If so smart move.

All the forwards are present and accounted for?

Hate posts like this. Now we will have a few hours of wild speculation before things settle out

i thought sloan had to pass thru waivers everytime he was called up or down?

Posted by: _stevo | January 9, 2009 10:32 AM | Report abuse

I sure hope Sergei comes back tonight!

Posted by: _jordan | January 9, 2009 10:32 AM | Report abuse

A trade in the works?

Posted by: meagle | January 9, 2009 10:39 AM | Report abuse

Collins at 580k and sloan at like 150k. this is a no brainer (provided Collins gets sent down).

To me, Sloan impressed early on, but his level of play dipped considerably before he was sent down the last time. Collins has been similarly inconsistent, but has not had as big of an inconsistency swing as Sloan. (By that I mean, Sloan had been really good, then really bad. Collins, good and bad.)

Posted by: FFSEnough | January 9, 2009 10:40 AM | Report abuse

Something smells funny. Could there be a trade a float? The one thing this team has is plenty of defenseman in the system. Could a package deal be in the works? They have to make room under the cap. While the idea of swapping Collins for Sloan is plausible it is not likely. Collins shoots right and Sloan left. BB doesn't like to have D on their off side. I wonder what it up?

Posted by: psugolf | January 9, 2009 10:41 AM | Report abuse

1) Unlikely a trade since all 6 defensemen are practicing. Usually they have a traded player sit out. ; )
2) Its either a Collins for Slaon swap, or perhaps Green isn't feeling 100%.

Posted by: fauxrumors | January 9, 2009 10:42 AM | Report abuse

Maybe the Caps are ready to trade a defenseman?

Posted by: MReilly9 | January 9, 2009 10:42 AM | Report abuse

kitty-

as to how to get the whole crowd to sing happy birthday. I have a few e-mails out to some "important parties" that may be able to help organize it. My concern is, we have to do it with blessing of the production crew, otherwise they'll just play some promo over top of us.

If all else fails, I'll try to get a bunch of notes up on the ticker asking the crowd to sing when BB's birthday is announced on the jumbo.

Posted by: FFSEnough | January 9, 2009 10:43 AM | Report abuse

ok. head over to caps homepage. that picture for tonight's game with Steckel behind the CLB player is ... well. Couldn't they have picked a better picture?

Posted by: FFSEnough | January 9, 2009 10:45 AM | Report abuse

Seems like he didn't need to clear to me. Something is in the air !

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 10:45 AM | Report abuse

If all 6 are out there, maybe they just put Poti on LTIR and brought up Sloan since its back to back games in case one gets banged up.

Posted by: ThePat | January 9, 2009 10:46 AM | Report abuse

Wasn't it said many times that a ROSTER MOVE would need to be made when Sergei comes off LTIR?

Perhaps this is that.

Posted by: _jordan | January 9, 2009 10:46 AM | Report abuse

If the fans are this confused and throwing around wild speculation about the reasoning for the call-up, what do you think the Blue Jackets and Canadiens are doing?

Considering the team will be leaving right after the game tonight to go to Montreal, maybe Sloan is just insurance against any possible injuries that could occur tonight?

Posted by: CamaroFS34 | January 9, 2009 10:46 AM | Report abuse

If Nyls is off to Tor maybe he has company. Mo? Whats the cap hit there? Almost $7m? Maybe we would get 1 body and a pick in return.

Greg,
Don't get fired! Somethings have to be looked up after work!

Posted by: CapManJ | January 9, 2009 10:48 AM | Report abuse

@DaveUK,

I thought the same thing, Nyls and Mo for Kaberle. But I didnt want to say, but since you were the first, let's roll with it.

Posted by: ThePat | January 9, 2009 10:49 AM | Report abuse

What's Kaberle's cap hit?

Posted by: KurtNYC | January 9, 2009 10:49 AM | Report abuse

It would be SWEET if this happens.

WAS - Gets Kaberle
TOR - Gets Nylander, Poti

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 10:50 AM | Report abuse

Is Nyls on the ice

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 10:50 AM | Report abuse

Kaberle is owe $4.25M over the next 2 years

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 10:51 AM | Report abuse

alas, I think it's easier than all this trade speculation.

Collins shoots left.

Alzner shoots left.

See you next injury, Karl.

Posted by: FFSEnough | January 9, 2009 10:51 AM | Report abuse

WHEEEEEEEE! Let the wild speculation begin!

Tarik, I swear you're just trying to make us working stiffs slack off and be stupid for a while. I swear it!

@FFSEnough: Collins didn't lose games to injury, either.

My personal bet? GMGM and BB are having all the Dmen practice so that word of a trade doesn't leak early. Usually they'd have a traded player sit early, but BB and GMGM have playing things close to the vest lately (especially on a game day), and I'll bet this time is no different.

Posted by: kittypawz | January 9, 2009 10:51 AM | Report abuse

What's Kaberle's cap hit?

It's 4.25m per, but I don't think this is it.

Posted by: Section117 | January 9, 2009 10:51 AM | Report abuse

@Jschon - losing Poti is not a good thing. He's not sexy but he's solid.

Posted by: goskinsgo | January 9, 2009 10:52 AM | Report abuse

Poti will not go anywhere. Why would we give him up. He plays well when in

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 10:52 AM | Report abuse

sorry, sloan is left. not collins. I meant to say sloan.

Posted by: FFSEnough | January 9, 2009 10:52 AM | Report abuse

Jschon?

Why get rid of Poti?

Posted by: numero94 | January 9, 2009 10:53 AM | Report abuse

Kaberle would fit in great here. I'm not holding my breath however. Just hoping we dump Nyls and Poti.

Green/Schultz
Alzner/Jucina
Kaberle/Collins

Thats nice.

Poti rules.

Posted by: _jordan | January 9, 2009 10:56 AM | Report abuse

Why the hate for Poti? BB and GMGM like him and think he is a great player

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 10:56 AM | Report abuse

Well there you have it. Nyls, Fehr and Schultz.

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 10:58 AM | Report abuse

Why dump Poti?

A. Kaberle is a much better puck moving defensemen than Poti.
B. If you didnt, then you'd have Kaberle, Alzner, Green and Poti essentially puck movers vying for 3 spots.
C. Kaberle $4.25M, Green $5.25M, Poti $3.5
Schultz, Jurcina, Collins are RFA's and Sloan is a UFA after this season, Pure economics.

Now lets talk trade!

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 10:59 AM | Report abuse

of all the guys on our roster, only Poti and Feds have any meaningful playoff experience. IMO that's not enough, and losing Poti would be a HUGE loss in the locker room.

Kaberle is much better than Poti...would be better for the 2nd PP unit. So I see where JSchon is coming from.

Posted by: ThePat | January 9, 2009 11:05 AM | Report abuse

Schultz's finger? Too convenient..just a ruse. Or is it Occam's Razor?

Posted by: meagle | January 9, 2009 11:05 AM | Report abuse

Poti is superior.

Posted by: _jordan | January 9, 2009 11:06 AM | Report abuse

*finally reads the update* Oh, okay. So, if Schultz is out, how does D shake out?

I would assume that Poti is on LTIR to make the cap work, at least for now. So...

I guess the big question is whether Sloan can handle Lambogreenie being out of position and take things on his own. I'm iffy on that point, but it's not impossible, so either Sloan takes Schultz's spot straight up or Sloan goes with Collins and Mo gets put back with Green.

Posted by: kittypawz | January 9, 2009 11:07 AM | Report abuse

Kaberle and Poti have played roughly the same amount of Pro games...

Kabelre 681
Poti 665

Kaberle 402 points (69 goals)
Poti 281 (60 goals)

Playoffs
Kaberle 77 games 6G 22A
Poti 31 games 0G 8A

Kaberle is a far superior a player

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 11:07 AM | Report abuse

Look, I dont hate Poti, but when you can get a Kaberle... YOU MAKE THAT MOVE!

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 11:10 AM | Report abuse

Guys. The only thing that is an absolute certainty is that GMGM is going to do something that not a one of you expects.

Posted by: kittypawz | January 9, 2009 11:10 AM | Report abuse

Sloan goes with Collins and Mo gets put back with Green.

Yep.

Posted by: Section117 | January 9, 2009 11:10 AM | Report abuse

Okay, but just don't trade Poti to get him, then. That way everybody's happy.

Posted by: _jordan | January 9, 2009 11:11 AM | Report abuse

As far as the singing of Happy Birthday for Ted and Gabby my son's hockey coach works with the Caps. He does the set for Craig and Joe. If you saw the post game the other day he was the one wearing the Poti jersey that scrapped with Craig. I've asked if he can talk to some folks. Hopefully he'll be able to help out.

As for trades. Our only issue is obviously going to be keeping Alzner up right now. I bet the Salary Cap announcement will be that Poti was retroactively moved the the LTIR thus buying more time to figure things out. We're such a good and deep team there is no reason at all for us to have an itchy trigger finger on any trades. Let's just see what other teams that are hurting offer.

Looking Ahead: Really really Good News (update)

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe
4 against Atlanta
3 against Tampa
3 against Florida
3 against carolina (2 at home)

2 games against the Maple Leafs

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)
1 against the Flyers (A)
1 against the Predators (A)
1 against the Sabers (H)
1 against the Islanders (A)

Looking good for the stretch run...

GMGM and Coach need to encourage ample time off for our injured to get healthy. No need to rush Feds back. (Really)

where did a kaberle for poti deal come up anyways? i thought it was nylander who we are trading

Posted by: _stevo | January 9, 2009 11:14 AM | Report abuse

I'll bet Columbus could use a wizened centerman to play with Rick Nash...

Posted by: _jordan | January 9, 2009 11:15 AM | Report abuse

To the folks who keep constantly talking about making moves (Nylander, Clark, etc.): Irregardless of the Sloan move today, call me an ignoramus, but why on EARTH do we need to make ANY moves when we’re sitting in second overall in the east at 27-11-3? I’m not following. Doesn’t a time come when a GM looks at his team’s overall performance and just says, “gee, we seem to be pretty good,” and leaves well enough alone? I know Nylander blows chunks, but at SOME point, I just wouldn’t want to mess with chemistry. Period.

By the way my son's team will be selling programs at tonight's games. A measely 2 bucks and it saves us some money. Youth travel hockey is a money pit. They're an older team, U18AA, but please contribute as if they were mites. It will save me a little money.

@JSchon,

I know, I know, but still - those are all OUR guys. We've become the New England Patriots of hockey. Why do we need to look any farther than CoCoville for fresh faces? We've got a friggin storehouse of replacement parts on our AHL team - I don't fully understand the need to look anywhere else. Guys have become interchangeable, it's absolutely amazing.

Ok I think someone is working on a fantasy team. Nice thought about Kaberle.....will not happen. Again it is all about paying less not more.

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 11:29 AM | Report abuse

marylandchris, it's all about the salary cap. can't keep alzner up here if we dont move some big salary. nylander is underperforming, but they would certainly keep him around if there (a) wasnt a salary cap or (b) if he were cheaper. other option is to send down karl. i think we all have seen he can play up here.

Posted by: dcsportsfan1 | January 9, 2009 11:29 AM | Report abuse

If we weren't bringing on board a bonifide star in Kaberle or my mancrush, Komisarek, it wouldn't be worth it.

But I guarantee you, that Collins, Sloan, Giroux, Aucoin, Helmer, Lionheart did not have any practical playing experience with the big team, and they did just fine.

Imagine what a REAL professional blueliner like Kaberle could do in our system?

That also would be amazing.

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Assuming both Theo and Johnny will split the starts with a back-to-back - who goes when? Theo tonight at home or do they let him play in front of his old crowd in Montreal?

Posted by: RicketyCricket | January 9, 2009 11:29 AM | Report abuse

yay, my little lost puppy dog is back! Why I think Sloan is like a lost puppy, I don't know.

Trading Poti would be, imo, dumb. Unless you're getting Lindtsrom in return, and the Caps aren't, I think trading him would be silly and counter productive. His ability to do the very small things and vetern discpline is a huge assest to the club, and he obviously meshes well with hsi teammates and the system in place. Don't go mucking up things that are working!

On the other hand, if Old Man Toepick Skates-in-Circles got traded, I might buy everyone at the phone booth a beer.

dcsportsfan1,

Fair enough, I do see that angle. Good point. I guess my comment was just more generically speaking to the idea of trades for trades sakes.

Posted by: MarylanDChris | January 9, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

Kaberle $4.5
Nylander $4.25 + Poti $3.5M

Um, my math says we pay less.

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 11:32 AM | Report abuse

"We've become the New England Patriots of hockey."

Might need a few more championships before saying that. Plus most teams in hockey are built through the farm system.

The reason a deal might have to be made is salary cap. And Hershey might not be the answer because high performance in the AHL doesn't always translate to the NHL. Look at Giroux.

Please explain... This should be interesting.

Posted by: JSchon | January 9, 2009 11:39 AM | Report abuse

so you think getting rid of Poti and Nyls is a fair deal for us?

Posted by: RedRocker | January 9, 2009 11:48 AM | Report abuse

Kaberle $4.5M Cap hit
40 Games
2G 23A

Poti + Nylander $7.75M Cap hit
63 Games
6G 22A

Kaberle is 3 time all-star and is 30yrs old and is a premier Blueliner.

Nylander is an underachieving drain or space and resources. Poti is an average player at this point in his career.

We eliminate $3.25M in annual salary which keeps Alzner here and allows us wiggle room.

Where are we shafted?
Thought so.
Why do uninformed people argue with me. You may not agree with me, which is fine, sometimes I don't agree with myself, but have an argument ready, please back it up.

As usual the "I love Laing" mentality has overcome some of us here.

Half the board wanted M.Green gone after last season.

Now everyone loves Poti. He does the little things? How about doing some of the big things too?

People get too attached to our players. There is not 1 person that actually knows hockey that would even compare Kaberle with Poti, in fantasy or real life.

Trades are made for all sorts of reason.

1. Dumpnig of Salary
2. Filling a role
3. getting rid of underachieving players
4. Getting prospects
5. Getting younger
6. Adding a veteran

Having to have a 2 for 2 trade or a 3 for 3 trade to make it "fair" is about as ignorant as it gets.
