Caps Acquire Fedorov

So much for standing pat.

Columbus Center Sergei Fedorov has reportedy been dealt to the Caps, too. The team has not commented on the move, but I'm hearing the deal involves a prospect heading to the Blue Jackets. Working to get this confirmed.

If anyone was wondering whether the Caps are serious about making the playoffs thisseason, well McPhee has provided an emphatic answer this afternoon.

Update:I'm hearing prospect Theo Ruth is what the Caps are sending to Columbus. Still waiting on confirmation.

TSN reporting Ted Ruth goes to Columbus.

Posted by: Mr. Pickles | February 26, 2008 1:25 PM | Report abuse

Hah, I just sent an email to friends after reading about Federov on TSN saying the exact thing Tarik did about standing pat.

We're clearly trying to scratch our way into the playoffs. Let's hope this ends up working in our favor!

Posted by: SLM | February 26, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

Ted Ruth.. I have no clue who that is

Posted by: ButterSchultz | February 26, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

Seriously.

I wonder if he's done, yet.

I shudder to think about who we just gave up for Federov, though.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | February 26, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

Wow! This is unbelievable!!!

Posted by: stonestom | February 26, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

This is a nice move. He's not the player he once was, but he may very well be excited about playing on the same team with OV and Semin. We needed another top 6 forward and you're not going to find too many players with a better set of skills.

Plus, playing in Bruce Boudreau's system may let him use his creativity.

Posted by: Eric | February 26, 2008 1:26 PM | Report abuse

wow..i will admit that i'm impressed. Though I'm still wondering what's going to happen to Olie or Johnny though

Posted by: IrresistibleForce | February 26, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

It's for Defenseman Ted Ruth, selected in the 2nd round of 2007... not bad for a rental...

Posted by: FrankM73 | February 26, 2008 1:27 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

You should've known better than to believe GMGM when he said he was staying pat. He'd be an awesome poker player!

Posted by: Don-Ald | February 26, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

How about Kolzig, Pettinger and a pick to SJ for Doug Murray?

Posted by: opus | February 26, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

I think we drafted Ruth in 2nd or 3rd round this past year. Columbus is definitely in sell-off/salary-dump mode here.

Posted by: Mr. Pickles | February 26, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

It has been confirmed that Teddy Ruth has been traded for Fedorov. Teddy ruth is a Freshman at Notre Dame this year 1 goal, 3 pts , and 32 PIMs, small price to pay for fedorov, Ruth was touted as a career middle man, not a standout, and it would have been 3 -4 years before we even saw him down here in hershey, so not a big deal.

Posted by: Dan | February 26, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

So far, GMGM has not given away any of the current team members. In that sense he has stood pat.

Posted by: HotDog88GT | February 26, 2008 1:28 PM | Report abuse

I see Fedorov Between Semin and Koz...Keep OV and the Swede together!

Does the trade also include Anna Kournikova coming to DC as well?

Posted by: 8 is enuf | February 26, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

I guesswe should all move over here. Ted Ruth from Notre Dame. I guess it's not much of a loss overall. Sounds like he wasn't working out too well in our minors if we let him go for a probable rental.

Posted by: EricS | February 26, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Niko | February 26, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

I can only say that Federov will not be back next year. Maybe Ted is trying to get the fan base strong for the next 3 years, and he feels a playoff push is needed this year.

Remember that Green, Semin, Ovie, and Backstrom have never played a game in the Playoffs. They must feel that we need a series under thier belt sooner rather then later.

Posted by: SA_Town | February 26, 2008 1:29 PM | Report abuse

@ HotDog88GT - good point...GMGM said he saw no big moves but would look at anything that made sense to the team (good deal, not mortgage the future) and he is staying consistant with that

Posted by: TheCapitalist | February 26, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

WOW. We give up Suts for a #1 goalie, and now we trade a prospect at a position we have a ton of young depth at for a seasoned vet at a position of need.

GMGM has proven that he can sniff out a great value.

Posted by: JPC | February 26, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Fantastic moves by GMGM. Not too pricey but just enough to get this team and this city re-energized. It shows a commitment to winning now. I think McPhee knows that winning and playoff experience are two of the best ways to help the Capitals progress to the next level. :).

Posted by: Anonymous | February 26, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

A solid forward who plays good defense with 28pts this season on a team not nearly as gifted offensively as ours, for a freshman college prospect?

Sold.

Cancer or not, he's a vet whose name is on the Cup of Cups, and it's not like we're stuck with him for the next 3 years or anything.

Posted by: HolyOlie | February 26, 2008 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Tarik mentioned on WaPo Live that he didn't believe GMGM would "stay pat"

Posted by: fullright | February 26, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Ideally, this plays out like the Mogilny trade for the Devils back in 2000. A bonafide Russian scorer arrives and adds some much-needed depth.

Posted by: Eric | February 26, 2008 1:32 PM | Report abuse

@:-/ GMGM is stealing from the poor, the poor don't have shut down defensement to lose... but Huet.... I'll just shut up!

Posted by: theCapitalist | February 26, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

@ Don-Ald

GMGM is such a good poker player because he doesn't believe in things like facial expressions. I would say he doesn't believe in emotion either, but he did try to lay a smack down on the Chicago GM a couple years back

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | February 26, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Euro-Trash.

Posted by: Pete Peeters | February 26, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

PLEASE don't try and sell these deals as evidence McPheee is for real.
Try and call on what is missing.
DEFENSE!
Try being direct and serious about the GAPING hole on blue line.

To all that bash Kolzig, the guy still has what it takes, the same can't be said for the Caps defense and their forwards commitment to their own end first.

Posted by: Chief | February 26, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Kost,

Yes. This. Go for broke, GMGM. You haven't sold anything of significance so far. I'll give up a little something for a good d-man at this point.

Posted by: HolyOlie | February 26, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Ok, not in our minors. My bad. I guess it's just the rights to him when he goes pro then.

Posted by: EricS | February 26, 2008 1:33 PM | Report abuse

Only problem now, we're getting greedy. GMGM "says" he's standing pat. People wouldn't have been too upset if we didn't do anything today. Now we've got a goalie, a forward, and everyone will be disappointed if we don't get a D-man too.

Wow, not what I expected today.

Posted by: JPC | February 26, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

I like this move. It's a small gamble but a gamble none the less and the potential upside is higher than the downside.

Posted by: Scott | February 26, 2008 1:34 PM | Report abuse

This is fantastic!! Great moves by McPhee!!

I can't seem to get any work done today. Crazy.

Posted by: cs | February 26, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Federov isn't a terrible move but he is a shell of what he used to be. Ted Ruth, from all accounts, is an excellent prospect (he molds his game after Scott Stevens) and he can hit like a freight train! My question is where are the moves for DEFENSE??? We're not going anywhere til that improves! Huet hasn't been tearing things up lately either...he has about a .80 save pct his last 10 games. Lets not put GMGM on a pedistal for these moves...until he addresses the D in a meaningful way we won't make the playoffs.

Posted by: KillerT | February 26, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

looks like the islanders are starting to sell

Posted by: Kost | February 26, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

You know, now that I think about it, Fedorov must have be acquired for his defensive prowess...If you recall, he's played D for Detroit hehehe ok so it was a fill-in role, but still.

Posted by: :-/ | February 26, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Ted Ruth?

As Homer Simpson would say,

" I have no idea who that is"

Posted by: dave | February 26, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Ok, so this is what I think...something is up with Kolzig or Johnson or perhaps they are trading Huet to another franchise. But I think the acquisition of Fedorov means they are sending down Fehr and they are going to have to bench another player...My guess is Laich will be moved to the wing and Steckel will remain in the lineup...But I think this spells the end for Laing. He's going to be the odd-man out.

Posted by: Travis Rechenbach | February 26, 2008 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Quality d-men are hard to find. If we can squeak into the playoffs with this lineup and get our current D some more experience then that should be the overall goal. I just don't think we should give up what it would take to get the D-man we would need for a truly solid team. Keep what we got.

Latest rumor...Matt pettinger traded to Vancouver for Matt Cooke.

Posted by: :-/ | February 26, 2008 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: old time hockey | February 26, 2008 1:38 PM | Report abuse

Federov, for a short time, may have been the best player in the world.

Those days are well behind him now.. in 50 games with Colombus this year he has 9 goals, 19 assists and a -3.

At this point in his career, he is at best a second-line center. The good news that that is exactly what the Caps need.

And I'm ok with giving up Teddy Ruth, because the Caps have several other D in the system with more potential.

GMGM has addressed goaltending and the center position. Will he go for the solid crease-clearing D-man? There's still time left..

Whether or not you consider what he did standing pat or not (silly argument)...

What he did do, was realize that this team needs to make the playoffs.

We're not ready?

Obviously, that isnt the premise for making these deals.

We are as ready as we've been in years. Its time to get back into the play-offs and stir things up.

A big thing to come away with this is the Caps have traded one NHL player (Petty) but aquired three. The team is still together, just being added to. Also since Fedorov is only here for this year (prolly wont sign him) Its just a fill for the hole Nylander left.

I think these trades are great but my curiousity is still surrounding what the Caps will do with 3 goalies...

Fedorov fills the gaping 2nd line center hole with Nylander out for the season. This is a great trade because it will allow Kozlov (when healthy again) can play RW with Ovie and Backstrom...and Semin can play with a russian.

Posted by: :-/ | February 26, 2008 1:44 PM | Report abuse

i think the fedorov trade will pay off. he's got sincere skills and playing with ovie, semin, greener, and backstrom will only allow him to produce more effiently as a team. gotta get another D though and i like the HUET decision!

Posted by: james | February 26, 2008 1:45 PM | Report abuse

What an awesome day. Feds is coming to DC to hook up with Kozlov, OV, and Semin!!! The Russians are taking over! Pettinger gone, and good luck to him in a new home (far away). Huet in goal. W-O-W. GMGM really played his cards close to the vest. Now let's see the Caps start winning again. I wonder if Johnson or Kolzig will get traded? Eminger has got to get a break somewhere else. I leave for a two hour meeting and the Caps are almost a new team.

Posted by: Kost | February 26, 2008 1:46 PM | Report abuse

MetalCap - I can't imagine there being a market for Kolzig given his age and his current level of play, and Johnson, as much as we may like him, just isn't that great. The Caps will probably just send Johnson down to the minors or cut him.

@Kost,
Considering Nylander, Clark, and Pothier are pretty much out this season but will be back next year makes Federov a viable rental. We could keep him, but doubtful.

Fedorov will probably get signed by Detroit in the summer so he can retire a Wing. That scenario has more legs than us keeping him I think.

These are a perfect examples of the inexpensive (in terms of assets) trades that the Caps should have been looking at. What have we lost? A marginal D-man who is 3-4 years away from contributing, compensation for Sutherby and Matt Pettinger. GMGM is impressing me today.

As someone noted, the guys we picked up are playing for contracts. Whether with us, or someone else, they're playing for $$$. Huet may even be better off out of the Montreal spotlight and the Carey Price magnifying glass.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | February 26, 2008 1:55 PM | Report abuse

Huet is still a proven #1. god knows the caps need a more consistant goalie who can play night in and night out. No offense to kolzig but he's clearly slower than earlier in his career.

Pettinger is "thrilled" to be going home to BC. Cooke adds muscle and grit, a guy willing to battle it out along the boards and in high traffic areas. The Caps need that. So this moves helps both sides, the Caps and Petty.
Wish him nothing but the best, he's a good guy.

Cooke-Laich-Lang is a respectable third line. So that's three very capable lines that BB can throw out there now as opposed to one and a half.

I would imagine Johnson is gone rather than Olie. Kolzig has played better of late.

Goodbye Matt!

Hello Matt!

Maybe we should stop sending guys to Hockey 'N Heels. The same thing happened to Heward last year. Or maybe we should have it not be the day before the trading deadline.

Meet Matt Cooke:

Burrows prides himself in being a pain in the rear, and Matt Cooke told the Vancouver Sun's Cam Cole that he's going to do everything in his power to dirtily distract the opposition--except fight:

"For me, the more that I fight, the less effective I become," Cooke said Friday, at the end of a week in which he pitched Edmonton's Matthieu Roy headfirst into the glass, slew-footed the Wild's Kurtis Foster heavily into the end boards, and just generally created havoc -- and, not incidentally, was a key element on the Canucks' best line, with Mason Raymond and Ryan Shannon.

"When I hit somebody, if they send their tough guy out and I fight, everything's taken care of," Cooke said. "By not fighting, it leaves 10 or 12 guys angry at me. Because they know they can't fix the problem by fighting me."

As posters already pointed out, this was a good move. We needed a D, but so do a lot of teams and typically you have to pay or give up through the nose.

My question to readers is this- what are our new line combonations? Here's my suggestion-

1st line - Ovi, Federov (c), Fleishman
2nd line - Semin, Backstrom (c), Kozlov

Here's why. Ovi has been in a MINOR goal scoring slump, so we're not breaking any recent chemistry between Ovi and Backy by putting Serg at 1st line center. Putting Serg there would give him and Ovi a boost.

OR

If Serg can't handle physically being on the first line, then here are the combos-

1st line - Ovi, Backy (c), Fleishman
2nd line - Semin, Fedorov (c), Kozlov

Thoughts?

Anybody still on here?

I personally would like to see Kozlov back on the first line. This line had great chemistry in games against Ottawa, Florida and Montreal...

8 - 19 - 25
28 - 91 - 43

Flash and Semin have a bit of a chemistry when playing together on the PP. Federov fills the proverbial second line hole for us nicely.

Should be interesting to see how this all turns out.

putting federov on the same line as OV and moving up flash would be a terrible idea for the caps at this point in time. OV has been playing nicely with backstrom and flash did not gell on this line like many had hoped.
