Starting Lines, First Period
First Period updates:
*On the power play for the first time tonight, the Caps missed on two good chances. The first when Michael Nylander was unable to gain full control of the puck or get a shot off as he stood alone to the left side of the crease. The second when a rebound from an Eric Fehr shot popped out to Brooks Laich who was tied up with a defenseman in front of Craig Anderson. 0-for-1.
*1-0 Caps. Backstrom (6) from Fleischmann and Lepisto at 15:57.
*Ten seconds into the Caps second power play, Nicklas Backstrom's pass, which was intended for Alex Ovechkin, deflected off one of the Panthers skates and past Anderson. At first glance us media folks in the press box thought Ovechkin might have batted it in but with help from the Verizon replay it was clear that the pass ricocheted off a Florida skate.
*Sami Lepisto's assist is his third point (all assists) in the four games he's played since being called up from Hershey.
*That goal was the Caps first power play tally in eight periods, the last was Viktor Kozlov's in the second period against Atlanta. Washington was 0-for-8 with the man advantage in the past two games.
*The Caps out shot the Panthers 8-4 in the first, and Flordia didn't really test Jose Theodore.
