Steckel Comes Home (Sort of); Tonight's Lineup

While tonight's game in Columbus is big for the Caps, it's absolutely huge for David Steckel, who played four years at Ohio State just down the road.

The checking line center said he's got more than two dozen friends and family members coming to Nationwide Arena to see him play against the Blue Jackets. Steckel also said he's decided to make Columbus his offseason home, and is about to close on a house here. (He traveled here with his wife, DiDi, during the all-star break to go house hunting. DiDi played basketball at Ohio State, by the way.)

Asked what would be a perfect first shift for him tonight, he said: "Win a face off, get the puck in deep and have a big hit."

Then there was a long pause as the reporters looked around at each other. "Oh yeah, and score a goal obviously," he added with a laugh.

Steckel was featured in today's Columbus Dispatch. Check it out here.

Based on the morning skate, Brent Johnson will start in goal and oppose Pascal LeClaire. Steve Eminger and Matt Pettinger will be the scratches for the Caps. Here's the rest of the lineup:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Fehr
(Fehr was recalled yesterday)
Fleischmann-Kozlov-Semin
(Kozlov to the second line)
Laing-Steckel-Bradley
Brashear-Laich-Gordon

Defense
Morrisonn-Green
Poti-Jurcina
Schultz-Erskine

That's it for now.

I find it interesting that Steckel has supplanted Gordon at Center on the checking line. Tarik, has Steckel's play there really surpassed that of Gordon's in that role?

Posted by: Geauxcaps | February 5, 2008 1:40 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

Why do they continue to put Semin on RW (rather than Flash)? I realize both players prefer the left side, but wouldn't you want your potential 30-40 goal scorer in his comfort zone?

1) Pettinger sitting should come as no surprise. Scoring 2 goals in 50+ games is not going to enamour himself with the coach. He may be playing his final days with the Caps.

Hey Tarik,

Do you know if the GMGM is perusing a player by the name of Fabian Brunnstrom in the Swedish Elite League. I just read an article on TSN.ca and apparently approx 20 teams are interested in his services. A diamond in the rough I guess, a UFA, that was never drafted.

tarik, just out of curiosity, why, when you link something generic (like standings), do you seem to always link to espn? as a hockey fan, i avoid espn's site like it's carrying the plague, seeing as the treat hockey the same way. i vowed years ago never to visit that site again. you've nearly tricked me into is several times, but i've gotten savvy enough to check the link before i click. what gives? contractual obligation? habit? just not as paranoid as me?

Posted by: pgreene | February 5, 2008 2:55 PM | Report abuse

I can't understand what has become of Pettinger. I always saw him as a 20 to 25 goal scorer who can skate and be defensively responsible.

I wish he would take that visor off, although I can't blame him for putting one on in the first place.

I'm sure he will be back and sooner or later it will work out for him once again.

He's a good guy, and he deserves it.

@pgreene
I link to ESPN because it's one of the few sites that updates the minute games end. so when I'm on deadline at 10:30 trying to figure something out, that's the place I turn.

@wanggo
Fehr looked good today, lots of jump. but it's completely different in the game, when the intensity doubles and the pressure triples.

@geauxcaps
I don't think Steckel has surpassed Gordon on the depth chart. they are going to play equal minutes, both take important draws, and when BB needed a second line center, he turned to Gordon and Laich.

@SM
Semin is more adept at playing the right side.

@ELO
I had not heard about the Caps pursuing Fabian Brunnstrom. I'll ask around.

As for the Jackets, I did hear this morning about a bug that's been going around the room. We'll know more about who's in and who's out tonight.

Right, TSN has hockey, but my impressions of the channel and website is that they're just like ESPN in following the big teams and names. Where ESPN is Red Sox/Yankees/Tom Brady, TSN is Leafs/Habs/Crosby. It helps not my Caps-fandom at all.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Phonebooth stands or the shop at Kettler. Not sure if you get better customization quality via the NHL shop, the Phonebooth seems to do "raw" heat-pressed lettering (no nameplate).

GM NEVER addressed the loss of Mark Tinordi, nor put in place a goaltending plan for the future.
It's obvious that the FA market, as it relates to Washington only allows for a european (money matters)Kozlov, Nylander or second/third rate (Clark & Clymer) north American. All other serious impact leaders have no interest in joining.
If AO keeps running around like a linebacker, it's only a matter of time before the inevitable.

Eh, the money for the jersey is not a big deal... I can wear if for the next 13 years. $320/13 is 26 bucks a year... not too bad. Plus, I got the authentic one with the real stitching - went all out. First time I have done that with a jersey.

I am depressed about the Caps... want them to just get in first and start pulling away... right now, they are just messing around - depresses me.

I am not a hockey expert.

BUT. Could this be the league catching up with Boudreau? Now, it is incumbent upon coach to tweak again, and stay ahead of the curve of defensive adjustments.

Just a theory.

Or, the team got overconfident and then got tight when the streak ended.

Another theory.

I like all the tweaking of the forward lines. Kozlov and Semin on the same line, sounds like a passing clinic, then duck duck goose and they all fall down.

Posted by: Maladjusted | February 5, 2008 4:32 PM | Report abuse

on ice,

They had this deal - buy a certain dollar amount of stuff and you will receive a free hat. So, I ordered stuff that I didn't even want - just to get this cool Caps skull hat. This was in November... 3 weeks ago, they said they were out of stuck and I don't get a free hat because the lil disclaimer said "only on available items"... WELL, had they sent it with the rest of my order, it would have been in stock... also, had they told me that the item was not available, I would have picked another "free" hat. Who orders Caps stuff... honestly - out of stock???? Did they just make 3? Either way, I won't do business with shop.nhl.com again. Lost my business for good.

How do you have 36 shots on net and do not score... same with the game vs Montreal... I think BB is on to something about people crashing the net - if they don't they lose... we will see tonight.

Poti and Green are both offensive minded. Emmy as well (but Erskine by himself covering an Emmy rush doesn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling).

Campbell would be an expensive rental. What prospect(s) would Buff get in return? They'd want someone who'd be NHL ready next year (imho).

Posted by: Steve R | February 5, 2008 5:20 PM | Report abuse

my troll filter is getting better :D now I just skip posts based on the author.

@828
36 shots seems a big number... but the Caps were in an offense crisis: they started shooting from far away, no screen, because they couldn't really handle the puck in the offensive zone. It's the worst nightmare for the Caps, because they have the illusion of creating offense, when in reality the other team is in no danger and can easily produce good opportunities with rushes.
It happened the first game with Montreal too.

Posted by: mauree | February 5, 2008 5:26 PM | Report abuse

shut out 2 times in the last 3 games..its obvious what the problems are.

For those who do not want BB to shake up the top line, get used to see the Caps on the receiving end of a lot of shut outs. Its only a matter of time before teams figure out how to defend against OV and company.

A shakeup is needed. You cant go with the same line over and over again each game and not expect it to catch up with you.

Every team is going to go through rough spots. The Caps wont keep up their streak of not losing back to back games the entire season.

What will really show the type of team you've got is how they respond in this game and the next and the next. BB has obviously shown what he is made of but I dont think the team has shown that just yet. There are too many inconsistent efforts. This is not a team that can play mediocre and win a game like other teams in the league. In order to win, everyone has to be at their best from the drop of the puck to the final horn.

I know people dont want to sit Semin, but really, I think 1 game in the press box would do him good. Talk to any player who has been forced to watch for a while and they will tell you it helped them see how the game is really played.

Sit him? Nah, but im sure he will have some sort of injury real soon.

Posted by: JamesD | February 5, 2008 5:29 PM | Report abuse

I dont know if Campbell would really be a 'rental.' Id rather see them go after him with the full intention of signing him to a multi year deal in the off season.

Posted by: JamesD | February 5, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

There's no reason for Erskine and Schultz to be on the ice at the same time. And there's no reason for them both to be dressed when we have Steve "combines the hitting power of Erskine with the speed of... someone faster than Schultz" Eminger waiting in the wings...

Posted by: MikeZ | February 5, 2008 5:31 PM | Report abuse

@JamesD

Good analysis. I agree, the back to back streak won't hold.

Semin... the problem is, you don't want him to think/worry too much, or he'll stop try his monster moves.

I think BB is investigating what are the right buttons to push... but I'm betting he'll sit him soon enough if he keep playing like this. However I'm optimistic: I think he'll redeem himself today.

Posted by: mauree | February 5, 2008 5:36 PM | Report abuse

NHL should go the way of the XFL and put those nick names on the back of players jerseys.

Thinking about it though, a player like Semin, it would probably hurt him more and motivate him more if he is dressed for the game but plays only a few minutes.

I have wondered if teams have started figuring out how to beat us as well. The losses to Montreal and Toronto were good examples. Teams have been hanging back and just stiffling our passing lanes, almost with a neutral zone trap type set up.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | February 5, 2008 5:38 PM | Report abuse

I asked someone at Kettler why I should get my jersey there over the summer and they gave me a laundry list of reasons. The main reason why the jerseys are more expensive at Kettler is that they use better letter/number kits (pro style). Most of their jerseys are multi-layer twill and stitch, while the ones that you get from nhl.com are one layer with the rest of the colors screened on (like the shoulder patches on the cheap jerseys). RBK uses this method because it is more cost effective...er... makes the jerseys perform better. Kettler is definitely the best place to buy your jersey based on what I have seen. To the untrained eye, they all look the same. But if you are a jersey geek like me, you will appreciate the difference.

Posted by: Jersey Guy | February 5, 2008 5:40 PM | Report abuse

As good as AO is a trap works great against him because he carries the puck through the neutral zone 99% of the time with a ton of speed and looks to pass in the O zone.

If he really wants to make a dent in D schemes, pull up in the N zone and look to one of his linemates streaking through the zone with him.

Would be nice to see Stecks have a big game. Also, as far as Ohio being a dirty state, if you think that, you've only driven through Columbus. I go to Dayton once a year to visit my dad's aunt, it's a nice city.

And, hey, Columbus is still prettier than just about every town in Western PA (Sorry if you live in steelland).

this may have already been stated but I don't understand breaking up the Ovie-Backstrom-Koz line and the Flash-Gordon-Semin lines. Those two lines were dominant until we put Laich on line two inexplicably. Now we've moved Laich/Gordon AND Koz. Just makes me nervous. That said, I'm excited to see what Fehr can bring to the team. Hope he is in decent NHL shape...

RE: Scoring Issues?

I still don't understand the comments about Saturday's game against ATL. The shot Ovie had in the last minute where a completely screened Lehtonen (sp?) stabbed into midair and found the puck was absurd. He also stopped a one-timer plus rebound taken by Ovie from 6 feet away. He was unconscious, is there anything really to be displeased with there?

RE: Trolls

This board has a lot of "fans" who just come by to stir up trouble and don't really care about the team. Oddly enough, despite not seeing eye to eye with the guru I don't particularly see him as a troll, as from time to time he makes some good points.

There are a few others who seem only to post negative comments about the team, and are only here posting when the team is losing. We're not even really "losing" right now, unless you count losing 2/3. Ottawa is 3-7-0 in their last 10.

I'm so frustrated with this team yet again. WAKE UP CAPS. You NEED these points, stop letting everyone else in the league walk all over you!!!

Posted by: time for bed | February 5, 2008 7:58 PM | Report abuse

well, I think the Caps played well 5 on 5. Good intensity, good puck control (although no chemistry on first line). But then they got on PP and went on vacation: no more intensity. This time particularly it blew in our face. 1 min+ of 5 on 3 should result in a goal 80-90% of the times.

Posted by: mauree | February 5, 2008 7:59 PM | Report abuse

#19 needs to grow up and learn how to shoot the puck when he's in the slot, all alone on flippin' 5 on 3 power play. Instead he needs to make the perfect pass. He did it twice trying to get it to Ovie. The second time he served it up to Nash. Pitiful. SHOOT THE F'N PUCK.

It's hilarious reading the posts that were on this thread between about 7:30 to 8:30...seriously, I understand that the Caps were down 2-0, but common...this team has shown time and time again that they don't give up.

Atlanta lost in regulation, so we are within 1 on them with 2 games in hand...one more game in the Southeast to follow tonight..

Way to battle back Caps. After a disastrous first period, they clawed back and win it in overtime. The second and third period is how the Caps have to play for the rest of the season. They won this game because they never gave up and kept on working hard. Ovie is amazing and should win the Hart if we make the playoffs. BTW, what is with Poti goal having to go to review. It was so obvious that it went in the goal. Are the refs blind when it comes to the Capitals?

Posted by: austinsteve | February 5, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

@Jeff

I'm still upset about our PP. It's ridiculous right now. We're getting goals against on it - with Montreal we almost got scored on 5-3, and did get scored on 5 on 4. It seems like they go to sleep on it. The last goal against while 5-3 was in 17 years ago.

But it was a gutsy win this one, they kept believing... one hell of a game overall, I liked it :) AO.. what to say...

Posted by: mauree | February 5, 2008 9:57 PM | Report abuse

Also, I admit I'm guilty as anyone else about getting overly emotional when the team comes out flat and gives up a soft goal or three to open things... the blessing and the curse of this team is to be an emotional rollercoaster, up and down and believing and being hopeless...

Posted by: Kurt | February 5, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

"I'd never seen play Fehr before, I think he'll do nicely."

austinsteve: I've seen Fehr play alot and this game was very typical of his style of play, his energy and positioning. And if he keeps playing with Nick and Ovie he's only going to get better. Very good showing for his first game back.

Posted by: Tess | February 5, 2008 9:59 PM | Report abuse

Fehr had a decent first game...but the thing that I really liked about him is that he was in front of the net a lot, and not only was he in front of it he was actually stopped there instead of gliding through the area like a lot of the Caps tend to do.

If he can handle the minutes on the top line he's going to get his share of garbage goals. And as he figures out how to play off of OV's and Backstrom's 2 man game he's going to have a lot of chances too. I think he's got a great chance to stick due to the injuries, and now he's got to make the most of it.

Great win!

Posted by: Jeff | February 5, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | February 5, 2008 10:00 PM | Report abuse

@Esa

While Morrison was skating backwards on a Rick Nash break, McCreary skated into him from behind, knocked him down and fell on top of him. That gave Nash a nice open lane to the net. He carried it in and scored. Someone with Nash's skill won't miss those. Someone with McCreary's skill should be greeting folks down at the Walmart.

Posted by: tallbear | February 5, 2008 10:03 PM | Report abuse

I like the lines tonight. Fehr had some opportunities and was unlucky not to score one tonight. He caused havoc in front of the net and could complement Backstrom and Ovie by gathering up those rebounds. Semin looked good with Kozlov on his line. They created chances and Semin did score. Now only if Nashville can do us a favor and beat Carolina in regulation. It's 0-0 right now.

Mauree -- the 5 on 3 was definitely a mess...the PP in general is poor.

To me, and I'm not sure I've seen enough of Fehr yet to completely buy into this, he needs to be on the 1st PP and he needs to wear a full face shield and plant himself in front of the goalie. You have Backstrom feed the point, or try to catch Green back door if it develops.

The PP had been so successful the first 25 games or so under BB, but obviously the last few games it's not clicking. To win games consistently you need to win the special teams battle, or at least break even.

Tomorrow's game is going to be tough, and without an improved PP......

Also, the game recap is soft-pedaling the McCreary thing. Morrisonn 'collided with' and 'got tangled with' McCreary, according to that. Also, no mention whatsoever of the Poti non-goal call.

I hope there's a few choice quotes from the Caps in the full recap later tonight regarding the officiating.

Johnny for STARTER!...I LOVE everything olie kolzig has done for this organization, but...Brent was pretty highly touted coming into the league, pushed into a starting role too quickly in St. Louis, and now at age 30??? is in his "prime years" as a goaltender.

On a related note, Bryzgalov gave up three goals in the third period tonight to blow a 3-0 lead. Go Johnny!

I was just thinking the same, put Petty in place of Fleischman, tonight Flash seemed to be playing along the right side allmost on top of Semin all night. At the very least, BB should put Semin on the left, it is his natural position and Flash seems to prefer the right (a little sarcasm).

@anti-Semins
No lazy penalties tonight? All four penalties were good penalties? No complalints? What a let down.

I was against BB breaking the first line, but I must admit, it didn't turn out as bad as thought it would.

I would like to see Petty on the right and semin on left with Koslov at center. I know it is an understatement to say that Petty has under-performed this year, but, I think, Petty and Semin are suffering from the lack of continuity with their playing partners. Maybe that is not it, either. But I sure would like to try that line.

Ovechkin - Is there anything he can't do? Wow.

McCreary - In all my years of watching hockey I have never seen a better open ice hit by a ref. Tinordi would be proud.

Fehr - Seemed to be getting more and more comfortable later in the game, which is to be expected. Did some good work along the boards and in front of the net. Almost scored a a "garbage" goal and let off a wicked wrister that barely got saved. This bodes well

Flash - Seems like a nice guy but can't seem to score at this level, and apparently can't clear the puck in his own end. What did his outlet get picked off three times in a row or was it four?

Johnson - played very well. I think he and Olie should be 50/50 down the stretch

Semin - seemed to be playing with more spark today, did not seem as lazy

The team overall - more aggressive than we had seen them in some recent games, and I felt like they controlled the first 16 minutes of the first period. The last 4 was a different story but once again they bounced back and OV led the way.

2. Johnson looked good tonight (in highlights)

4. Ovie gets it done.

Poti played really well. Not only did he score and provide the assist on the OT winner, he also had some key blocks in front of the goal to help Johnny out.

Keep with the goalie rotation. Olie was unlucky against ATL. It was a goalie duel and it was really the offenses fault we lost that game. We'll need both of our netminders sharp and fresh to have any hopes of making the playoffs.

Philly will be a tough game tonight. I would be happy to escape with just a point. The Flyers played well against an ATL team last night that was invigorated with Kovalchuk's return to the lineup.

Posted by: Madflava | February 6, 2008 8:48 AM | Report abuse

Did McCCreary get a Bud Light from Columbus for that great open ice hit?

IMHO, if Fehr keeps lurking in front of the net good things are going to happen.

It's great to see the Caps battle back (once again) from 2-0.

Philly looks good. Who's in net for them tonight?

@erick- You do know that Fehr is just coming back from an injury right? And you do know he played here last year before the injury and actually did well...he's definately NHL caliber, I thought he did really well with Backstrom and AO last night.
I have to agree with BB's line changes b/c it did seem to help Semin to have Kozlov on his line although I'm still not sold on Flash being on the 2nd line. He needs to earn that spot and so far he hasn't.
Finally Poti scores! Geesh we've been waiting long enough for that! Hopefully it will continue and he'll start putting up the numbers!
Also whats with all the negativity on this board! I've never seen so many people get so freaked out by one period of play. The Caps have come back in numerous games since BB took over...you guys need to chill!

From Wikipedia:

"On Feb. 5th, McCreary tackled defenseman Shaone Morrisonn to give Rick Nash his 28th goal of the 2007-2008 season and a 3-2 lead for the Columbus Blue Jackets over the Washington Capitals. Shortly after, he attempted to rob Tom Poti of his first goal of the season, but it was overturned by officials who weren't betting on the game. He has made himself blatant in his attempts to determine the outcome of games over recent years, and the NHL should look into letting him go.

Despite the claims of Paul in the 1960's, it was later found that McCreary's mother was, in fact, the Walrus."

:))))

Posted by: Finn | February 6, 2008 9:05 AM | Report abuse

LOL at the wiki-edit. That won't last long. Brent does look quicker, but I don't see any difference in rebound control. There just seem to be more guys in Caps' sweaters in front of the net.

I guess Poti has joined Laing and Ovie in the emergency goalie rotation.

I think the fact that they can win a game like this when their PP is not clicking is worth excitement instead of concern. They clicked before and they will again. I predict two of them tonight.

@ jeff

From a much earlier post you made. I found it quite laughable as well all the people tuning out of the game to watch the Lightning game instead of staying with their "favorite" team. Come on guys. Stick with this team through thick and thin. We have seen how well they battle and battle back.

This is our year to make the playoffs again and we can not be having negative thoughts to weigh the train down.

Go Caps!!

That is simply amazing.

Posted by: Jeff | February 6, 2008 9:33 AM | Report abuse

Jeff,

I think that win and the 2 points are a psychological barrier. Once the Caps get past it, they should hold on. Most of the guys have never been in this position. I hope they know what to do with the division lead once they get it.

Posted by: Finn | February 6, 2008 9:48 AM | Report abuse

Finn, just curious...what'd you think of Fehr last night? In his last time in the pros he definitely didn't show a nose for the net, but I thought he did that well last night. Thoughts?

Posted by: Jeff | February 6, 2008 9:51 AM | Report abuse

@Finn's point

On your point of being young, and not experienced. Clark and Pothier are vets that may not return. Do we not look at some veteran experienced role players before the deadline? I know GMGM is keeping quit, but I wouldnt bet a dollar on either of them coming back this year.

Posted by: SA-Town | February 6, 2008 9:58 AM | Report abuse

The last time Fehr was in the pros was under Hanlon. Hanlon had a tendency to put young unproven guys on lower lines by default rather than put them in a position to excel. Look at how Backstom INSTANTLY started producing once BB took over. BB has faith in Fehr and is going to give him an opportunity. Fehr has shown he can produce in the AHL and unlike FLash, I think Fehr has the size and strength to make the transition.

I was pleased with Fehr's performance along with Johnny's, but my #1 star goes to Poti. He was THE MAN during the 5 on 3 kill to start the 2nd and then got the tying goal in the 3rd. In my eyes, last night was his best game as a Cap.

Posted by: Gentle giant Schultz | February 6, 2008 10:04 AM | Report abuse

SA-Town -- it's possible that GMGM is waiting for a week or two to see if either of those guys are going to heal up before the deadline. If not, it seems like a small deal for a veteran blue-liner (not a top 4 guy, probably -- a guy like Sean Hill?) for a pick would make sense.

I think GMGM is probably feeling pretty safe with his job right now, meaning there's no reason for him to give up solid prospects for a run this year. If he feels like he HAS to get in to stay (which I thought was probably the case earlier in the season) then he'll probably try to make a bigger move.

Posted by: Jeff | February 6, 2008 10:04 AM | Report abuse

@CT Caps Fan

I share your enthusiasm, I don't want to "weigh the train down" :D

However what worries me is not the "clicking" of the PP but the lack of intensity. It seems that we use the PP to rest and go on vacation.

Seriously, last night I was hoping not to get any more PP at one point, as we were getting way more chances while 5-5... and way LESS chances against. Pretty scary. During the first 5-3, next 5-4 and second 5-4 we got ZERO shots on net and one goal against.

25 games between different calls ups. It takes a little time to develop chemistry with line mates etc. Fehr's average time on the ice in his first 11 games was 5:45. His next 14 games was 10:43. Thats not much time at all, and the time he DID have was generally spent on the 4th line. Thats not where you put a guy you want to rack up a lot of points. Thats where you put a guy to ease his transition and give him a taste of the NHL. He's getting top line minutes now. If he doesn't flourish now, we'll all blame it on being out of hockey for 10 months, but it'll be interesting to see. I thought he was doing a good Chris Clark impression there late in the game, working the boards and creating traffic. He also showed us that nasty wrist shot. Have a little patience dude.
