Steinberg Visits Kettler

Did you know that Alex Ovechkin gets his hair trimmed at Hair Cuttery in Ballston Commons? Or that rookie Nicklas Backstrom refuses to get a haircut in North America? Or that Ovechkin is just as physical when he's playing floor hockey against a bunch of school-aged kids? Or that the Caps listen to Kanye West's "The Good Life" after wins?

Check out the DC Sports Bog.

"Why would Pascal leave Columbus? He look like their #1 goalie there. His numbers are good, he's making 1M. Think gmgm can steal him from them?"

Posted by: mauree

Mauree, he's a RFA end of the year. Figured I'd throw his name into the mix.

Posted by: Steve R | January 16, 2008 9:41 PM | Report abuse

Caps got some help from Philly tonight.

I am solely focused on the Southeast, and not worried about the scoreboard anywhere else.

Posted by: SA-Town | January 16, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Here's a shocker: Beaky Buzzard leading D-men in scoring % with 5 goals on 17 shots.

Posted by: Steve R | January 16, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

I know that. My question is: why would Columbus let him go? Looks like an AO situation there. Unless gmgm offer 4-5M and they can't match it... I bet they'll offer him a contract soon. But yeah, his numbers are awesome.

re: Paddock mouth pimple.
Losing to the Caps 3 times in 20 days? Being swept by them? He compensated with chocolate.
Tons of it. Hence the giant pimple.

i thought only people from hershey did that? (arh*arh)

Geez, all this talk about pimples, you can hardly get a word in edgewise about hockey around here :).

@ SteveR & BernieWolfeFan re: Keef jinx,

I would start with Rangers 68 before cremating Pens 68, hell, put Caps 68 in there too. Self-absorbed weenie. Did you know that he lost half a million dollars betting football around the time he came to the Caps?

NY Isles' LaFontaine's jersey is too important to be squandered on some mid season game. It is a last resort kind of totem. I remember where I was like it was yesterday when I saw that interminable game. Does anybody remember the Dancing Crab on Wisconsin Ave.?

And BernieWolfeFan, for me, age is a state of mind until I actually try to do something ("the mind makes promises the body can't fill" Little Feat's Lowell George). Now that should date me!

All right

Top Reasons why Hockey is Better Then Sex (but not really :D)

* If it's a bad game, you can call a time out.

* There is a limit to the sizes of all equipment.

* You can still play when you get married.

* You can score on all the teams in the league over and over.

* It lasts a full hour.

* You know you're finished when the buzzer sounds.

* Your parents cheer when you score.

* You can count on it at least twice a week.

"Good Life", huh? It's no "Sweet Caroline", which is one of the fun things about Madison Square Garden on gameday that I wish the Caps could somehow crib, but it'll do, and it's on my game-day playlist now (this is why being able to buy music through the iPhone is dangerous).

On a related note, the Rangers handled game-day music right up until this season. They used to have a list of all their in-arena music on the website before the NHL took it over, and they had a big open suggestion message board for music to play at the Garden on game-nights. That, and the "C'mon C'mon" (Von Bondies) in-arena intro they had last season and the "Ladies and Gentlemen" montage they had on MSG for the playoffs were both awesome. Now, all the music stuff on their website was gone last I looked, and their in-arena intro is some totally meh monologue and music taken straight out of Backdraft on what it means to 'Be a Ranger'.

Am I missing any Caps music traditions by being a 'remote' fan that don't involve Stompin' Tom Connors?

Whoa, got it. The first record I ever bought was Boston, self titled.

So true.

@ Mauree:

Gonna have to disagree with you on your top reasons post...especially regarding the hour thing. Maybe I'm still young enough to have near at least that amount of time though so I'm not too jaded yet.

I think when Karl Alzner gets to Washington he and OV should have a talk show during the off season. Seriously, just put a camera and a microphone around those guys and hilarity is sure to ensue.

I think "trolly" (i.e. troll like, not, like a streetcar) is at least as good a word as "obfuscate". Comments? Make mine a brandy please. Any Old Bay for the popcorn?

Denny Potvin? He broke Bengt's leg right? B!tch.

Posted by: Anonymous | January 17, 2008 1:35 AM | Report abuse

Very funny!! :-D

Sex, trolly trolls, pimples, chocolate, obfuscation ... this has become a VERY interesting board! Surely not what Tarik had in mind when he started it, but we've taken over!!! LOL!! ;-)

OK, I am ready for the game tonight!!! Well, almost ... need to grab my tickets and a jersey, but I am almost ready!! I must admit, I've always liked the Oilers (they had my support for the cup a couple of years ago), but tonight it is ALL Caps all the time ... LET'S GO CAPS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: Boo! | January 17, 2008 7:03 AM | Report abuse

'morning Boo!

Funny you said that, I also rooted for them for the Cup back in the days of Jason Smith and Pronger. They had so much heart.

But tonight we must destroy them :p

Posted by: mauree | January 17, 2008 7:17 AM | Report abuse

Just in case there is any obfuscation, I was just kidding about taking over ... :-)

Very good, Mauree!

Heh!! Thanks for all the nice comments from the last blog post!

I was the poster "20009" that responded to 20008 yesterday.

20008 is an idiot though!

Check this out... with a win tonight - we pass the Sabres... haha, that would be awesome! Wouldn't that be a slap in the face?

Posted by: 828 | January 17, 2008 8:41 AM | Report abuse

Nylander had his surgery yesterday - how did it go?

Posted by: 828 | January 17, 2008 8:42 AM | Report abuse

We need Ottawa to get revenge on Carolina and we need Huet of Montreal to get a shutout against ATL.

Like someone said, all we should care about is the Southeast Conf... I don't think two teams are going to make the playoffs from the SE... so, we need to win and get another banner to put up at the VC.

Posted by: 828 | January 17, 2008 8:46 AM | Report abuse

It's the little things in life, eh? Hopefully the Pens go into a death spiral and the Caps pass them too.

Posted by: Steve R | January 17, 2008 8:47 AM | Report abuse

I just heard that Dave Semenko has challenged Donald Brashear to a fight tonight.

Posted by: dave | January 17, 2008 9:03 AM | Report abuse

Pascal at 4-5 mil would be a savings over current #1 goalie salary... I'd guess you're right about Columbus locking him in before it ever got to that point though.

Posted by: Steve R | January 17, 2008 9:10 AM | Report abuse

I wouldn't mind seeing Pascal here. He has been hurt twice this year, so I'm not to sure if he is injury prone, but he def puts up the numbers that we want.

I would think a lot of goalies would want to come here. Yes, our defense is young, but they are getting better with experience. However, we can put up some goal support kinda like run support in baseball. If a goalie can allow 2 or fewer goals, we will win. Last year, I think we were 13-1 or something like that when we allowed fewer than 2 goals. This year, I'm sure it's the same... except for that last game against Boston.

Mike Krushelnyski....underated player...

Posted by: dave | January 17, 2008 9:24 AM | Report abuse

Very nice. and a whole hour? that would probably take care of the whole year for me....

We've taken over. Tarik is just the parent in the corner shaking his head at the kids.

@Steve R.

I'm of the mindset that when it comes to the Pens, it doesn't matter where we finish in the standings, as long as we beat them.

Posted by: Lee | January 17, 2008 9:32 AM | Report abuse

Unfortunately I really don't think that gmgm is going to pick up another player. I think they are just going to use what they have...

Posted by: K | January 17, 2008 9:32 AM | Report abuse

Not that I don't want the team to make the playoffs, and would love to see the Pens do a death spiral with Syd crying the whole time, but I want to beat them. Bad. Crush them. Like a paper cup.

Hey, how about Stein sneaking the moniker "star newspaper reporter Tarik El-Bashir" into one of the questions? Is that an official title over at The Post? Maybe it's time to update the old business cards...

That's SNR TEB for short.

Honestly, Steinberg is good at what he does. I'm not quite sure exactly what that is, but he's good at it. Great stuff in the Bog today.

We need Kozlov to do some lines from Rocky III, he's got the right accent.

I'd like to see another OV open ice hit on Sid.

Wait.... Rocky IV?

Posted by: Steve R | January 17, 2008 9:58 AM | Report abuse

You want dreams? Picture a Penguins Sweep in the Stanly Cup finals by the Caps. With a hat trick in each game by AO. 7-0 every game - rain of free wings in Washington. Other goals by Semin, Laing, Backstrom, Brashear and Olie. Yeah you heard me. Olie.

Posted by: mauree | January 17, 2008 10:00 AM | Report abuse

On Frozen Blog has a write up, too. They have a video as well. Ovechkin fighting for the ball with a bunch of kids is very funny.

"Check this out... with a win tonight - we pass the Sabres... haha, that would be awesome! Wouldn't that be a slap in the face?"

Not so much since the boys here can't seem to beat them. :(

And Tarik posted that Nylander's surgery was successful.

Green is slacking in that scenerio. Any big hits by Schultz?

"Kolzig was critical of Boudreau for pulling him against the Flyers in a newspaper column published yesterday. Boudreau said he had spoken to Kolzig about the comments, but declined to share specifics."

I would love to have been a fly on the wall for that one!

Here's one possibility...

Bruce-"George coddles your sorry butt and doesn't pick up Bryzgalov just because he's worried about shattering your fragile ego -- and this is how you pay us back?"

Olie-"You just don't understand goalies"

Bruce-"I'm starting Johnson again tonight. Not that he's any better than you, but he's all we have."

Bruce-"It's worse than I thought"

Not to mess with another man's fantasy, but we could never play the Pens in the finals. The CONFERENCE finals, and it would be just as nice. And you certainly are transfixed on those Austin Grill wings. Are they that good?

Posted by: Lee | January 17, 2008 10:14 AM | Report abuse

Oh yeah.
Two Hat Tricks by Green. And Schultz hits everything that moves then fights with Laraque and kicks the bejeesus out of him.

Posted by: mauree | January 17, 2008 10:16 AM | Report abuse

Rocky IV - "You Vill Lose" That would be tight to hear Kozlov say that.

@keef... thanks for the update about Nylander - also, I know we can't beat them, but it would be like us vs Ottowa... "hey, you beat us 4 times, but look who is going to the playoffs" I just want us to be ahead of them... if they beat us, oh well, who has more points? Ya heard?
Don't get me wrong, I want to beat the Sabres... but, if we can't, then at least we are beating them in something.

Posted by: 828 | January 17, 2008 10:19 AM | Report abuse

don't even try it man. Bettman declares Wash and Pittsburgh to be in different conferences just for this match.

I don't know about Austin Grill wings... but they'll sure taste delicious after a 7-0 win.

Posted by: mauree | January 17, 2008 10:19 AM | Report abuse

The wings are pretty damn good.

Posted by: 828 | January 17, 2008 10:22 AM | Report abuse

We should have wings party one night after a big win.

Let's be honest, would bettwoman do anything that might jeopardize his precious Sydney? Like putting him against the Caps in the finals? No, any change he makes would include giving the Pens a free pass to the championship, just like Ralph Machio in Karate kid II

Posted by: Lee | January 17, 2008 10:27 AM | Report abuse

Posted by: Jill | January 17, 2008 10:32 AM | Report abuse

I guess today is movie reference day.

Hopefully Schultz will have a Hanson brother moment soon and have a great open ice hit (and not be the hitee).

Ovechkin gets his hair trimmed? lol

I've been thinking they need to get him involved in one of those Geico caveman commercials - long hair, scraggly beard, toothless grin.

A caveman could say, "Oh great, it's not like cavemen make money like hockey players." Then he looks over at Ovechkin who gives him the toothless grin.

Caveman says, "Or do they?"
