T-Minus 90 Minutes

A couple of quick notes to get you ready for tonight's opener at Philips Arena:

*After taping a pre-game segment for the local broadcast, Coach Bruce Boudreau and his rookie counterpart in Atlanta, John Anderson, headed toward their respective dressing rooms. Anderson came down the hall first and accidentally turned into the Washington room before a security guard corrected him.

"I don't know my way around here yet," Anderson said as he walked away shaking his head and laughing.

When the story was relayed to Boudreau, he cracked, "Well, he's always wanted to work with me."

Boudreau and Anderson, of course, have been best friends for the better part of three decades, but are meeting as NHL head coaches for the first time tonight.

*So what does a coach tell his team before a game its supposed to win? Boudreau wouldn't say exactly, but if you read between the lines, he's going to remind them of last night's game between the champion Red Wings and lowly Maple Leafs. The Leafs surprised the Wings with a 3-2 win on the night Detroit raised its 11th Stanley Cup banner to the rafters at Joe Louis.

Boudreau clearly doesn't want to experience any surprises here tonight.

The only surprise I want to see is Backstrom and Ovi each with a hat trick for the night.

So who's betting that the Philly fans will boo Palin, or as someone who supposedly supports her here wrote Paulin. It'd be a hoot to see them throw snowballs at her, but I'm sure they won't let that happen.

The coverage I've seen live from Atlanta so far tonight on CSN-HD looks to be 16:9 SD (like a widescreen DVD), which is okay with me I suppose, because I'd expected regular ol' 4:3 SD (regular TV). Sure, I'd rather have the 16:9 HD (HDTV), but I'll take what I can get for the away games. I'll be there for the 3D view on the home games. ;)

Steve (R.?):
I was wondering if he was going to get yanked, too. This is not pretty ...

Posted by: Boo! | October 10, 2008 8:15 PM | Report abuse

Unfortunate period given how well they started. The ice was definitely tilted in their favor for about the firt 7-8 minutes then the first ATL shot went in. :( A goal here on the PP to get them w/in 1 would be huge.

Posted by: Steve | October 10, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse

Still a lot of game left. Would be nice for the Caps to pick up another goal here on this PP.

Posted by: nadir | October 10, 2008 8:20 PM | Report abuse

So much for that PP......

Posted by: nadir | October 10, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Well, at least it was nice to see Ovie and Semin give Jose a word of encouragement after he allowed goals.

Thanks to Semin for getting it back to "only" a two goal deficit.

Wow! A lot of penalties already.

Posted by: Joe B | October 10, 2008 8:21 PM | Report abuse

C'mon Green!

No more bad giveaways like that!

Posted by: Joe B | October 10, 2008 8:23 PM | Report abuse

Come ON, Caps! Tighten it up around the edges, boys. You can do this.

At least that mess is over. Theodore calmed down after the time out, so maybe he'll be able to pull it out... hopefully...!

*fingers crossed!*

Posted by: i rock the red | October 10, 2008 8:27 PM | Report abuse

I just keep remembering the game in ATL where we came back in the 3rd to erase the 2 goal deficit and win. I know our guys can do this. but its like ive been saying. our D sucks, erskine is dead weight. and im so dissappointed with Theo. but in a little defense for him he has no help back there.
oh well come on boys lets have an awesome final 2 periods

Posted by: Jay | October 10, 2008 8:29 PM | Report abuse

We need to get used to this from Jo-Say. He is not a top tier goalie and will give up soft goals here and there. But he's our guy and we need to support him. I'm glad he wasn't yanked.

Posted by: VAL | October 10, 2008 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: mauree | October 10, 2008 8:34 PM | Report abuse

you guys know center ice or whatever they call it in dc is free right now right? Huet just gave up goal #3. Straight up 1 on none straight ahead, he was too far back in goal - right over the shoulder. Both goals I saw were his fault no question. Didn't see goal #2

Shut them out the rest of the way, Johnny, and hope the OH-fence can get the Caps back into it.

Posted by: Joe B | October 10, 2008 9:00 PM | Report abuse

Brent's been playing well. Maybe he can save the day, er evening.

We leave our goalie's out to dry anyway. No goalie's going to have great #'s for the Caps, we need our offense to kick it up a notch.

Bam!

Posted by: Icebat | October 10, 2008 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Hey, if this is the Jose we're going to get, let's hope Brent steps up. This is his shot at #1.

Posted by: this space for rent | October 10, 2008 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Actually aside from Jose I think the Caps are looking good. A bit rusty on D sometimes but solid. I think we can still win this one.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 10, 2008 9:15 PM | Report abuse

nadir, they (inDemand) do a 14:1 mux for Center Ice channels 1 through 14. Normal SD is on either an 8:1 (good) or 10:1 (worse). Because the bandwidth is so constrained, the picture necessarily suffers.

I'll spare you the rest of the details unless you're terribly interested. :P

Posted by: this space for rent | October 10, 2008 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Right after the Thrashers third goal, I ripped a hole in my stress ball. This does not bode well for the stress level later in the season.

@old time hockey: I'm hoping for it. Bourque and Alzner both deserve to be in the lineup. As for goalie stuff: Of the three, I'd prefer Varlamov. He looked the strongest and the coolest in the preseason.

Posted by: wienerdog4410 | October 10, 2008 9:56 PM | Report abuse

JMU:
I agree - I don't know what's the matter with The Beaver. I am hoping he still has it in him, but between this and his preseason play, I am not overly impressed. Johnny has GOT to be motivated to play his best ever - he has already said that this is the first time he has believed that he had a shot at #1 since coming to Washington.

mauree:
I agree - if Johnny wins, Johnny gets the start. I almost wonder if BB has his doubts about Jose since he was not willing to say the Jose would get the start tomorrow. If he is going to pull the 'wait and see' card, then he probably plans to play the hot hand. At this point I would not be the least bit disappointed to see Johnny in goal tomorrow.

Joe:
LOL!! :-) Well then we'll have to get JMU up here for the secret ceremony ... ;-)

I can't stand a tough guy who goes after some no-name guy at the end of the game like Brashear. Go after another tough guy, don't pick on some rookie 18 year old unless he's coming for you.

It's the crap like this that's littered throughout his fighting career that makes me hate him. I don't dispute he's tough, he's just an idiot when he goes after people like this. Just like when he went after Chris Neil instead of fighting McGrattan in Ottawa. It goes on and on...and that's why I cheered when McSorely cracked him in the head with his stick so many years ago.

Posted by: Hensmith | October 10, 2008 10:36 PM | Report abuse

Stuff happens pretty quick out there.. so I'm willing to allow for the possibility that Brashear didn't know it was the 18-year-old kid that he grabbed and started fighting with. Plus he kind of took it easy on him..

It is a question that he should be asked, however.. Kind of like last year when McPhee should have been asked why he didn't pick up Bryzgalov. (sorry I just can't help myself)

It's not time to panic, but I'm blaming goaltending on that one. The 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th goals should not have been allowed. The other three were probably unstoppable, but that's still some ridiculously weak goaltending. I guess a lesson in this is to get the #1 to play most of the preseason to try to get him into a groove.

Semin had a great game, though. no doubt about it.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | October 10, 2008 10:38 PM | Report abuse

And let me clarify my thoughts on the fight. Bogosian's 18 but he is an NHL player now, so he has to expect a fight from time to time.

My view is that there's no reason for Brashear to fight him; all it does is raise Bogosian's stature.. you saw that after the fight when his team-mates commended him after the fight.

It does nothing for Brashear or the Caps, and a lot for the Thrashers. So why do it? That to me is the real question -- Bogosian is fair game just like everybody else but why give him the opportunity to seem like some conquering hero?

@DrinkingPartner

I agree. Also, the Caps looked solid but need those crucial adjustment that makes a Defense focused 100% of the times.

I liked Green, he was solid on D and well, scored two goals.

I'm optimistic. Despite the loss I see a good team, building from last season. I do see them being a little too fancy with the puck in front. Need to shoot the puck more.

Oh, and don't say that the Thrasher are the last team in the NHL. Maybe it was the case last year, I don't think it's the case this year.

Posted by: mauree | October 10, 2008 10:44 PM | Report abuse

I hope we don't make the same mistake as we did with Redskins and give up on the team after one bag game to open the season. People in this area expect to win every single game. This is a 82 game season. Before we come to conclusions we need a good sample. Our powerplay looked good, they moved the puck really well. Ovie scores the Penalty Shot and we would be talking about a come from behind win. Our goaltenders gave up 3-4 soft goals, our deffense was sloppy with coverage. 1st game of the year we looked sloppy and it was RUN and GUN game. Trust me as the season goes you will see less and less these type of games. Carolina beat Florida 6-4, Vancouver hung 6 on Calgary. St.Louis already has 5 through 2 periods. This is NHL in the first month of the season. So everyone relax, good things will happen.

Posted by: Relax! | October 10, 2008 10:44 PM | Report abuse

@oneal,

Maybe he asked Brashear to fight. The code says a rookie must ask to fight an established fighter. And the fighter should accept unless game conditions dictate otherwise, which clearly they did not at that point.

Posted by: Chad | October 10, 2008 10:46 PM | Report abuse

So are you all blaming this game on Brashear? Really? Good lord what a bunch of cry babies! The kid did start going after Brash in the crease. Brash just took him to task. You don't start something you're not willing to finish.

And there are 81 more freakin' games. This isn't the way we wanted to start out the season, but did you all honestly think we would win EVERY game?

Atlanta was trying to prove themselves to a new coach and their fans. They have some new faces that are pretty good and they showed it against a Caps team that couldn't do anything right in the first. The Caps played choppy and sloppy in the first like they were supposed to win because we were the SE Div Champs.

No, I'm glad we lost this one. The NHL has 30 teams that want to win. They have to bring it to the pond each night and the Caps definatly didn't do THAT!

Offense and Green looked good tonight after the first period. The Defense including Green looked awful. With the logic you all want to employ against Jose, the lot of them should be tossed.

We knew going into this season that Jose was a question mark. Which one would we see? The first half or second half of last season? One instance does not a trend make. I hope it gets better.

But the Defense was pathetic. THAT'S what cost the game.

If you stay in downtown Harrisburg (there's a Hilton and a Crowne Plaza.. the Hilton's nicer) there's actually a fairly decent bar scene that's walkable.

It's about a 15 minute drive to Giant Center; if you do want to stay closer there are obviously hotels in Hershey for all the tourists.

All I know is when you're pulled in the first game you play for your new team...that's not a good sign.

At least Boudreau has the nads to pull Jose b/c last year w/ Hanlon, he'd have sided with Jose and given him the chance too pull it out.

Now, that being said, I think Brent Johnson is one of the worst goalies in the league...so, the fact he came in was equal to or worse than Jose - and proven with the 3 goals allowed in the 3rd.

I know its' one game, but Theodore is going to be inconsistent all season, and the Caps are going to have to win a lot of high scoring games this season.

I also listened to an interview on XM w/ Huets agent and the move of Huet to Chicago was discussed. He basically said the Caps and Huet were very far apart in the negotiations until the very, very end. By that time, the agent advised Huet to wait and see what the market was like before making a decision, and Chicago called at 12:01 (think McPhail w/ Poti) and it was clear they wanted Huet as their #1, for more money over a longer term.

I bet Olie had a little smirk on his face tonight.

I really don't think the Defense was really that terrible, not as terrible as the score showed, at least. I mean, really, it's not like the Thrashers were scoring from the doorstep or the slot -- both Jose and Brent looked lost on their softies. Jose and Brent both had no business letting Little score both of his goals.

The D was keeping them to the outside, except for goals 1 and 2. The rest were pretty much from the circles, where both of them should have had the angle advantage.

It was a terribly goaltended game, not a whole lot else.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | October 10, 2008 11:56 PM | Report abuse

Hi Tarik & co -

I just returned home from Phillip's Arena where I witnessed a sloppy and uneven performance by the Caps. Granted, it's just one game. However, my concerns about this team were brought to light.

Theodore and Johnson gave up four goals they should've saved. The defense in front of them was simply dreadful.

The best thing the Caps had going for them tonight was their offense and their power play. They held the territorial edge and dominated in shots taken.

Unfortunately, none of that means much when you stand around on defense; when you give up odd man rushes; and, when you can't stop pedestrian shots on goal.

Let's hope Theodore was just suffering from opening night jitters. If not, we're going to need much better play from our defense.

I will give credit to the Thrashers. While they did get pushed around some, they made stops when they counted. Lehtonen stood on his head. After he stopped Alex on the penalty shot, I knew it was going to take a special effort to win.

Well, there's always tomorrow night. C'mon Caps let's turn this thing around!

Fleischmann - 4

Steckel - 3
Schultz - 3
Poti - 3

Green - 2
Erskine - 2
Jurcina - 2
Laich - 2
Clark - 2
Nylander - 2

Semin - 1
Fedorov - 1
Kozlov - 1
Ovechkin - 1
Morissonn- 1
Bradley - 1
Brashear - 1

I think I'll have to agree with what someone (I believe Dave Reid) said on NHL on the fly. When Theodore is bad, he's historically been REALLY bad. And he was REALLY bad tonight. I say that Bruce goes with Theo for the home opener, and gives him a chance to redeem himself. Kiprusoff was awful in Calgary's opener, everyone has bad games. No doom and gloom for me tonight, while I was disappointed with the effort tonight.

Another observation from the stats.. the Caps lost A LOT of face-offs tonight, except for Laich.

Fedorov won 6 of 17

Backstrom won 6 of 18

(Laich won 7 of 10)

While it's only game one of the season I sincerely hope that was just a clunker in terms of goaltending. I only saw highlights - but the team pumped 40+ shots on goal. You can't say it was a sluggish effort.

Theodore was swiss cheese on the third and fourth goals. The first two Johnson let in - looked like he should've had him but then again I'm not sure with a small screen how wicked those shots were. Feel free to offer any feedback. Let's hope it was a "hockey fart" for this team tonight. Theodore better step it up after that crap. Defense needs to tighten up but again I only saw highlights.

Again it's only game 1 so let's hope this woke the team up. Let's Go Caps. :)

Oneal,

I agree with all your points. Did the goals from the left happened while Fleischmann was on the ice? That's his side.

Goalie was weak but it was evident our left side was really weak.

This was an early wakeup call.
Need some work ethic in defense.

Next game starts a winning era.

GO CAPS !!!

Great work! Notice something? The D are way up on the top of the list...

I had predicted that Semin would get the Caps first goal of the season. But then I talked myself out of it reasoning that it takes him a half season to get started. He looked really sharp last night.

Let's not forget who ELSE lost their opener (thanks to A View from the Cheap Seats for pointing this out):

1) The Detroit Red Wings - Stanley Cup champions - lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs - dead last in the Northeast division last year.

2) The Montreal Canadiens - last year's Eastern Conference champions - lost to the Buffalo Sabres, who finished 4th in the Northeast last year.

I'd say we're in good company.

Let the winning season begin!

Oneal/M.O.:
I think that Kozlov has the best S.O. record on the team - maybe he should have gotten the penalty shot ...

"last year's Eastern Conference champions"
ummmm, wasn't that Pittsburgh???

Thanks everyone for suggestions for Hershey! Can't wait to spend my first official weekend off in Bear country. Now if only I could figure out what a "Sound Tiger" is...

I know this was just one game, but with this kind of goaltending we might as well play with 6 players and no goalie from the start.

That was my biggest worry coming into the season. BTW, we do have a great goalie. His name is Varlamov.

Even as a Caps fan I have to say that I wasn't impressed by Brashear jumping on an 18-year old rookie in his NHL debut with the kid's family in attendance. Not a classy move. The poor kid looked scared out of his mind and I can't say I blame him. I cringed when I saw who Donald went after. If Bruce and Atlanta's new coach weren't best friends they'd be climbing over the glass to fight each other after that. That was completely unnecessary.

Otherwise, even despite a loss was a really fun game to watch and the rest of our team played great. Atlanta just got great goaltending and we got what we got.

I think Olie had a few steller games similar to that last season. IF OV nets the penalty shot, we might not be having this conversation. I was hoping Bruce would go with Koz (if he was on the ice) or Semin.

I don't think that Brash fighting a 18 year old is that big of a deal. If he is old enough to lace em up and get paid the big bucks, he has to be ready to be with the big boys. I don't think Brash picked him out because he was a rookie or anything like that, I think he just say a blue jersey.

@ jmu_capsgirl I think he meant by standings... it was P-burg but Montreal was the #1 by points.

I could not even venture here last night after the game. I was a bit bitter about how the evening unfolded. All the anticipation I had for last night that had been buliding for monthes, came crashing down like the stock market. Opening nights are special. You never like to see your team, coach and fanbase embarrased like that. Losing is one thing but doing it in a manner that exposes the very issue about the team that is most worrisome-goaltending is particularrly unsettling. Unless Armstrog suddenly morfed ino The Flower and Little into The Rocket, the Thrashers had no business being in that game if even average goaltending was displayed by the Caps last night. I especially feel bad for Bruce. He had to be especially pumped for that game. It was his first NHL season opener game that just happend to be against his beast friend's first ever NHL game as a head coach. Can you say Holloywood script? Strangely enough, the game was very entertaining inspite of the final outcome.

Everyone enjoy the game toonight.

i waited all summer, then had to spend time with my wife and kids pregame, to watch THAT!!???

The defense was pathetic. The team as a whole (including the league MVP) should be EMBARRASSED by the way they played. I get the impression that the team feels everyone should read how good of a team the Caps are on paper, and then stand aside and watch them perform their feats of wonder. Yes, only one game. But I really hope this serves as a wake up call.

OV was whining to the refs last night!!! Joe-Say was lazy. The defense was miserable. Did anyone hit anyone? That was not the same team that finished last season. Oh, and for those who don't realize it, at the end of a dreadful hockey game, the losing teams fighter pick fights with their counterparts on the other team. Erskine, Bradley, and brash did their jobs. Shame they waited 59 minutes to do it.

They better come out flying tonight. This will help to set the tone for the rest of the early part of the season. I want to see heart from these boys, not the performance by those paycheck collectors last night.

Leeguru:
Yup - it was painful. Although I have to say that we would not have been in much better shape with Huet. I am watching NHL on the Fly and I thought I was watching Jose again - they even assumed the same 'head down on the ice' last night. Not pretty. Not that that makes me feel any better, but at least it does not make me feel any worse! ;-) Hopefully Huet will bring the same game tonight, and Jose will snap out of it, already!

Watching the Caps recap now. Last night I thought that it looked like Jose was just falling down a lot - it still looks that way. Did anyone else think that?

WOW!! NHL on the Fly RIPPED Jose. It was almost comical. Oh boy - I hope they bounce back tonight.

Did anyone else feel like some of those penalty calls (on both teams) were downright ridiculous? I thought this was hockey?! I thought the worst was the hooking call on Kozlov... no wonder Ovy was whining to the refs.

O.K. Last night was sad, but it's a new day, let's see our real team out there tonight.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: Super | October 11, 2008 10:57 AM | Report abuse

I hope that loss last night wakes the Caps up to reality. Nothing will be given to them just because they're a good team now. If anything teams will be better prepared for them. Theodore needs to step up, or we'll be in trouble with our GA this season.

I agree to the sentiment that Semin should have taken that penalty shot. I said it as Ovie skate to the circle to take the shot. I have all the confidence in the world on Ovie on a real time breakaway, but something just isn't clicking for him in penalty shot situations. I'd like to see him try his move from his rookie year.

Anyways, I'm taking this loss with a grain of salt, maybe they needed it. Let's home they come out tonight and wreck Boo-et and the Hawks, and show us the team we know they can be.

Come on Tarik you are killing me...where is todays pre-game update!!!! who is in goal???? :-) I am dying here!!! LOL

Posted by: Puddin_An_Semin | October 11, 2008 11:11 AM | Report abuse

the game got away when ovie failed on the penalty shot. it was semin's opportunity that created the penalty shot and he had the hot hand. he should have taken it. varlamov is the best keeper we have, and should be in net soon. i would also rather see lepisto and alzner out there instead of erskine and schultz.

JT sucks
Huet sucks

lucky for Chi Town they still have the Bulin wall

Lucky for us we still have? Oh yea we don't have anyone do we?

Anyone saying we should have bid more on Huet needs to watch NHL On the Fly! Huet was just a little better than he was in the game where he let in 7 of 15. We would be in trouble with either guy in net!

That plane ride home last night must have been a riot!

I'm sure Bruce and the assistants have been taking a close look at game video and trying to figure out exactly what happened.

Personally, I could only stand to watch that crap once! But I would be shocked if Boyd Gordon was not in the lineup tonight.

And while it might make 'salary cap' sense to keep Alzner in Herhsey, if the D is not WAY better tonight there will be pressure to bring him up. And there will be more pressure ON him when he does come up than there should be; he'll be viewed as some kind of rescue plan for a bad defense.

Which is why he should not have been sent down in the first place.

Obviously the goal tending was wretched last night, but where on earth was the rest of the defense? It's great that Green is such a scoring machine (he's one of my favorite players), but he and the D-boys need play D once in a while, too. It seems to me like we were constantly burned by quick counter attacks because the entire team was crashing ATL's end. Worse, they seemed to lazily skate back to their own end after the ATL counter attack whizzed by -- like it wasn't their job to chase down the forwards. I hope that attitude changes.

Ok, feeling better now. Excited for tonight's game. Go Caps!!

Not a flash fan but he was not responsible for the goals. If anything just get him off the ice 'cause he's bad luck.
