Saw on twitter game was 7:30. Is it definitely at 7?

Posted by: MattBradley10 | March 7, 2011 5:29 PM | Report abuse

I believe it is 7:30. Standard for VS and most games in FLA for some reason.

DROP THE PUCK!!!

Not sure I've been this excited for a game since Game 7 last spring. Let's hope for a better outcome!

Posted by: MattBradley10 | March 7, 2011 5:35 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy is going to take this team to the cup.

Posted by: PhilCollins1 | March 7, 2011 5:58 PM | Report abuse

@Cletus - My guide shows Hockey Central comes on at 6:30 p.m. and game on Versus at 7 p.m.

Posted by: Dalliquippa | March 7, 2011 6:06 PM | Report abuse

Mike Vogel has the lines as:
As noted here earlier Schultz for Sloan, otherwise same lineup as in FLA: 8-19-22, 21-44-28, 25-90-18, 26-15-10. D: 27-74, 55-23, 6-4. G: 30

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 6:44 PM | Report abuse

Schultz-Erskine
Erskine-Wideman

John play with Schultz and Wideman??? And what happens with Hannan?

Posted by: gromovkirishi | March 7, 2011 6:51 PM | Report abuse

Did I just hear "The Caps iron clad defense"?

What a difference a year makes!

lol

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 7, 2011 6:55 PM | Report abuse

I hope BB doesn't keep riding Sturm instead of Fehr under some assumed pressure from GMGM.

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 7, 2011 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Even though I ragged on Greenberg the other day for being a nerd, but I'm no better. I projected the season ending rankings by taking Point%s of teams' last 10 and applying it to their remaining games. Looks like:

EAST
Pos. Team Proj.
1 BOS 97
2 PHI 94
3 WAS 93
4 PIT 92
5 TB 90
6 MTL 89
7 BUF 82
8 NYR 81
9 CAR 80
10 NJ 79
11 TOR 79
12 ATL 71

WEST
Pos. Team Proj.
1 VAN 102
2 DET 96
3 SJ 95
4 CHI 94
5 CAL 90
6 LA 87
7 PHX 86
8 DAL 85
9 MIN 83
10 ANA 82
11 NAS 81
12 CLB 80

I'll update these as things move along. Eastern Conf. can't keep playing at .500 forever, can they? At this rate we'll be playing MTL. Boo yat.

I started seeing that commercial about a week ago. My mouth fell open the first time I heard that phrase. Caps = Defense? Huh??

That said, LET'S GO CAPS!!!!

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:03 PM | Report abuse

What's going on right now? My husband is watching the news for the next 20 minutes and cannot watch the game on TV yet. Has the game started? Are we looking good? It should be a very intense game.

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 7:06 PM | Report abuse

Relax, caraveli. They haven't even dropped the puck yet.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:07 PM | Report abuse

Oh goody. Pierre McGuire. Mr Objective.

Posted by: LeeM9308 | March 7, 2011 7:08 PM | Report abuse

TB took the lead on goalie-rattling.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 7, 2011 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Oh good. I am nervous about tonight just because it may be demoralizing for us to lose first place the day after we got there. Well, we'll be able to tell a lot about how deep the progress we made is. So what's going on now?

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 7:15 PM | Report abuse

No score yet. Shots on goal 2-1 TB at the moment (15 min to go)

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:19 PM | Report abuse

We're having a hard time even getting in their zone.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 7:20 PM | Report abuse

@Doom_and_Gloom

Yeah this lookin like a neutral zone game. We might have to go back to BBs rope-a-dope from the last game!

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 7, 2011 7:22 PM | Report abuse

Oh great, the cable went out. I am dying here but if we have trouble even getting into their zone, I may not want to watch.

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 7:25 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, they are clogging up the neutral zone to blue line pretty good. Caps gotta do that dump and chase at full throttle to get past Tampas D.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 7:26 PM | Report abuse

@Albright

They're forechecking too heavy this time around - TB learned.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 7, 2011 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Neuvy is playing great, again. Neuvy will win a SC in his career. That guy is just a champion.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 7:28 PM | Report abuse

Okay I can see now. What's up with all these penalties we are taking recently? Taking 7 to the Panthers' two yesterday was disgusting. I thought we have become more "defensive" and disciplined.

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 7:31 PM | Report abuse

TB are forechecking a lot heavier this time around, not giving us that time to think.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 7, 2011 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Carlson got a deuce for holding a couple of minutes ago; PK successful. Still no score at just under 10 minutes to play in the first period.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Goodness. The penalties better even out...

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 7, 2011 7:35 PM | Report abuse

I just don't get all the slashing they are doing lately. Goal..... Gonna be a looooong night.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 7:35 PM | Report abuse

D--- that St. Louis. That little so-and-so has had our number for years.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:36 PM | Report abuse

Ugh - gotta stay outta da box

Posted by: ebolean1 | March 7, 2011 7:36 PM | Report abuse

They must be focusing on that stick breaking slash in practice.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 7, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

2 totally legit calls against us.

Johansson's line is the only one sustaining good o-zone pressure so far. Keep doing that and we'll draw penalties, too.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Good. Maybe this goal will teach them. We will not win against Tampa with 7 penalties as we won last night. Wow Tampa is so much more aggressive. If we don't answer pretty soon their momentum will build and ours will dwindle.

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 7:40 PM | Report abuse

Great shift by Semin. Getting it done at both ends.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Come on, PP.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:45 PM | Report abuse

interested to see the hits this period - my sense is that the caps are gettin their share

Posted by: ebolean1 | March 7, 2011 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Nice move Brooksie! Now let's get the PP goal.

Posted by: hanks1 | March 7, 2011 7:45 PM | Report abuse

Caps - get the PP going.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 7, 2011 7:45 PM | Report abuse

@Mike Green

I guess you REEEEAALY don't know what you have until its gone :(

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 7, 2011 7:46 PM | Report abuse

another power kill - ugh

Posted by: ebolean1 | March 7, 2011 7:47 PM | Report abuse

That is the second time that I have seen that happen....ever

Both times, this season, both times, the caps

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 7, 2011 7:48 PM | Report abuse

We have the worst power play ever.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Maybe Ovie8 will finally get pissed off

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 7, 2011 7:48 PM | Report abuse

OK, that's the weirdest penalty I've seen lately. Deserved, 'cause it's in the rule book, but how often do you see that actually happen?

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:48 PM | Report abuse

Boudreau's PP continues to blow big time. Talk about zero threat.

Again, isn't the PP supposed to be one of his specialties?

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 7:49 PM | Report abuse

When Ovi is mad - he plays better, so let's hope he can get some goals tonight.

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 7, 2011 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jp14710 | March 7, 2011 7:49 PM | Report abuse

Never thought I'd say this, but I hope we never get rid of Mike Green.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 7:50 PM | Report abuse

The NHL needs to take a hard look at that delay of game rule. I don't like it in general and I think it's ludicrous that it can be called in a situation like this.

And, I think it did hit the Lightning player making it even worse.

Not a good period at all for the Caps.

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 7:50 PM | Report abuse

wish they would quit tryin to carry it into the zone on the pp - it ain't workin - big time

Posted by: ebolean1 | March 7, 2011 7:50 PM | Report abuse

Sorry about the double post--my cat stepped on the laptop and God knows what she hit.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 7:51 PM | Report abuse

That clearly hit Hall. If you look at the first replay they showed the puck changed direction right after passing Hall, it clearly hit him and the linesman even signaled as such the ref just blew the call.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 7, 2011 7:51 PM | Report abuse

OK, it the Caps get a power play, can we just refuse it or maybe even bank it later of offset one of our own penalties?

They've totally let the lack of power play production get to their heads and they are desperately trying to force plays that aren't there. It's really ugly.

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 7:52 PM | Report abuse

We're getting outplayed by the better team. It really doesn't get any simpler than that.

Also, you have to shoot the puck for it to go in the goal, someone should tell the players this.

Posted by: VTDuffman | March 7, 2011 7:53 PM | Report abuse

It was important to try to jump on them early, win the 1st period and get the lead. The Caps will start feeling the effects of the back-to-back more and more as the game wears on

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 7:53 PM | Report abuse

TB is determined to outwork us. It's a viable game plan.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 7, 2011 7:54 PM | Report abuse

I hope these Versus "experts" are right, and the Ning burn themselves out.

Because they were all over us that period, skating very hard.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 7, 2011 7:56 PM | Report abuse

OV did hit that Tampa player. When I first saw it and heard the whistle, I thought he got a penalty for hitting the guy in the face with the puck for some reason. Oh well, it's not the first bad call against the Caps, it certainly won't be the last.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Aside from his stature, Martin St. Louis is everything you want in an NHL player. He is the heart and soul of that team. It'll be interesting to see where the Lightning are once he moves on.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 7:56 PM | Report abuse

Ovi very frustrated by the PP. I noticed a definite uptick in the Cap's intensity after the TB goal. I hope it's not too late.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | March 7, 2011 7:57 PM | Report abuse

typical first period. i do think we worked hard but no results, PP is god awful.

let's see if we actually work for the next two periods or fall to the "back to back games" excuse.

hendricks needs to run rollo again and get him off his game. rather take that two minute penalty then that slashing call.

Posted by: natresgroup | March 7, 2011 7:57 PM | Report abuse

It probably did hit Hall but 8 needs to find a gap and keep the puck low to the ice if he's going to fire off one of those last second prayers. I have no problem with the thought but the execution was poor. When you see players do that, they find space and fire it low and hard.

That was... get ready for it... a low IQ play.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 7:58 PM | Report abuse

That was... get ready for it... a low IQ play.

And a low IQ comment.

Posted by: hanks1 | March 7, 2011 8:01 PM | Report abuse

icehammer97,

The officials all got together to discuss what the call should be. The call was made after that meeting so I would assume that there was agreement among the officials.

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | March 7, 2011 8:02 PM | Report abuse

@hanks1

Specify what you disagree with. I couldn't care less about the jab but offer some counter reasoning.

You need to keep those shots low and hard.

Aside from that, Johansson's line was the best one in that period. They were the hardest working line and created the most sustained o-zone pressure.

Johansson is playing well beyond his years. Let's hope he, or any of the other youngsters, doesn't hit the rookie/sophomore wall at the wrong time. That is one of the risks you take when you go young at so many key positions.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 8:04 PM | Report abuse

what did the 1st period do to the caps, because they are not on speaking terms and haven't been for some time.

Posted by: copedog311 | March 7, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

"I noticed a definite uptick in the Cap's intensity after the TB goal. I hope it's not too late."

---

That's the most infuriating part. That means they *Could have* been playing that hard from the start, but they *chose* not to for some god forsaken reason. It's this team in a nutshell, lazy, slacking, jerks who can't get motivated without being down.

Play hard from the drop of the puck, is it really that challenging of a concept? The Bolts get it, and you can see the results after 1.

They've owned this division for the better part of the season for a reason - they are the better team.

Posted by: VTDuffman | March 7, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

@FloridaCapsFan, One the one that was right was outnumbered by guys who didn't have as good of an angle. The one linesman clearly went up to the ref and indicated that it hit the shoulder.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 7, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

OV was prob shooting at the goal (aka Roli's chest or glove) and that player skated in the way. oh well.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Well let's see we're down a goalie and a center, Arnott didn't play last half of 1st pd. Hopefully Arnott is OK

Posted by: BBDwrestling | March 7, 2011 8:07 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr

I missed this: "I hope these Versus "experts" are right, and the Ning burn themselves out." What did they say? Is there any hope?

VTDuffman:

"Also, you have to shoot the puck for it to go in the goal, someone should tell the players this."

Exactly. And they should shoot rebounds set up plays rather than shoot one-timers.

I am disappointed that we didn't answer their goal immediately

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 8:07 PM | Report abuse

Looks like BB didn't coach our guys up to well for this game

Posted by: Albright4Snapper | March 7, 2011 8:09 PM | Report abuse

We're awesome at picking up untimely too many men penalties.

Failure.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Can we have a goalie go a 7 game series without getting hurt?

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 7, 2011 8:10 PM | Report abuse

We are trying to beat ourselves, and we dont need any help.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 7, 2011 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 7, 2011 8:10 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: natresgroup | March 7, 2011 8:10 PM | Report abuse

$10 says the refs will miss an obvious call on Tampa later in the game.

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | March 7, 2011 8:10 PM | Report abuse

@tmac

Why try to demean Ovi's IQ? If you want to talk strategy, fine.

Posted by: hanks1 | March 7, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Holtby with the save of the year there if he got that.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 7, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

St. Louis has twice skated unmolested through 4 Caps exiting the zone on the PP.

Some awful attempts to exit the zone.

Taking all these penalties is an awesome way to absolutely kill yourself on a back to back.

Stamkos off the post.

A miracle save.

Lucky it's not at least 2-0.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

At least Arnott is back out there.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 7, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Holtby = our best penalty killer thus far.

Posted by: seth_malaguerra | March 7, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Looks like one team is pumped for this game, and the other is flat.

Holtby may have saved the game if the Caps can get a bit enthused.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | March 7, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Okay, maybe we should look at things differently. If we assume that the Caps' agenda tonight is to lose to Tampa Bay, then all their penalties and fake injuries make sense. We just misunderstood them.

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

He got it. What a save!

Posted by: MReilly9 | March 7, 2011 8:14 PM | Report abuse

@caraveli

There was some discussion about them being too aggressive early in games, then giving up a lot of goals in the 3rd period, possibly due to fatigue.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 8:16 PM | Report abuse

They are just sloppy tonight. Bad penalties, high number of turnovers, and shots missing the mark. I know that they played yesterday PM, but that can't be an excuse. They just weren't prepared to play. Still lots of time left, so hopefully there will be a spark.

Maybe BB should have been running his mouth with his team instead of the media about TB and their diving.

One good thing is that Neuvy is still on the bench. I hope we are just keeping him out as a 'just in case' thing.

Ladies and gentlemen please draw your attention to the Tampa Bay net and give it up for HOT GOALLLLLLLLLLLLLLIIIEEEEEEEEEEE!

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | March 7, 2011 8:33 PM | Report abuse

Same thing I did in response.

Posted by: hanks1 | March 7, 2011 8:26 PM

You still have provided zero reasoning to counter my actual argument about why it was a low IQ play.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 8:33 PM | Report abuse

To me, the powerplay is actually getting worse (hard to believe). Earlier in the year, they were at least getting some shots off. Now, they can't even get into the zone. When they do, it's briefly.

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 8:34 PM | Report abuse

Why won't OV dump or find someone to pass it to? He constantly has 3 guys all over him???? 2 guys must be open unless Rolo's covering someone

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS2 | March 7, 2011 8:35 PM | Report abuse

Wait, I've figured it out. The Caps are jet lagged from the long flight from Miami last night!

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Well, at least Roloson finally had to work for something.

Posted by: wocoliz | March 7, 2011 8:37 PM | Report abuse

More low IQ play.

That last view gave you a clear picture of Ovechkin making a bad decision.

Skating into the teeth of the D is fine, only if you make a good decision before it's too late.

That's like a PG in basketball penetrating into the paint, drawing defenders and kicking the ball out to an open player.

8 was OK if he sent the puck through one of the gaps before the D completely close in on him.

Even just dumping the puck in to the corner would have been a better decision.

Not a smart hockey play.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Jason Arnott's caveman offense would be good right about now. GO TO NET. SCORE GOAL.

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | March 7, 2011 8:38 PM | Report abuse

Maybe the PP will get going in the playoff.

Posted by: instinct227 | March 7, 2011 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Cap fans-the next goalie you take from the Bears is Nolan Schaefer. What a year for the Bears!!The 3rd best record in the league with 2 ECHL goalies(off and on) and 5 echl forwards!! Geez--what a year!

Posted by: rjdbandit | March 7, 2011 8:40 PM | Report abuse

Maybe it's time for Mr. Hendricks to reintroduce himself to Mr. Roloson.

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 8:43 PM | Report abuse

The good news, we aren't out of this. The bad news, the PP is just terrible.

With the PP being this bad, there shouldn't be any more "optional" practices. This PP is killing this team.

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 8:43 PM | Report abuse

That is because Backstrom wasn't on the bench to end the period. We are falling like flys.

Posted by: icehammer97 | March 7, 2011 8:50 PM | Report abuse

Great, Backstrom banged up along with Neuvy. Hope it was just an equipment issue.

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 8:51 PM | Report abuse

When every other goalie you face is a "hot goalie"...

it's you, not the opposing goalie.

When you continually have fewer PPs than the opposition...

it's you, not the refs.

It's easier to point at others for your own failures than it is to look in the mirror.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 8:52 PM | Report abuse

WE NEED MORE PP's!!!

Only 2 PP's through 2 periods SUCKS!

...we can't suck on the PP forever

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | March 7, 2011 8:53 PM | Report abuse

Guys, I hate to say it but I smell a Neuvy concussion. Time for our two goalies to be sick at the same time once again. Are any of you goalies? Holtby will need a back up.

But I mainly want to know. WHY HAVEN'T WE SCORED IN TWO PERIODS? Please tell me that we will not be shut out.

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 8:57 PM | Report abuse

We won't get shutout. I feel it. 2 goals this period and a 2-1 win. We will all go to bed feeling good tonight. Faith. I hope.

Posted by: billracer | March 7, 2011 8:59 PM | Report abuse

The Caps forechecking has been very good this game. The problem is that they haven't generated many scoring chances from the extended zone time and when it seems like the Caps are getting momentum they took too many penalties. 8 PIMs in the first 40 minutes, that is 20% of the game SH(or approx., I know there was a little overlap in time). That is too much time on the PK. Too many penalties.

Holty played a great 2nd period.

For all the criticism being enigmatic for showing up some games and not showing up others. Couldn't the exact same thing be said of Brooks Laich. He looked very good the first two games after the trade, afterwards he hasn't done much at all.

Laich is consistently good defensively, I will give him that, but he disappears for long stretches of time on offense. I'm hoping he shows me wrong in the 3rd period.

IMO, I think Semin has been the best Cap so far along with the 4th line and Chimera, who has surprisingly played a very good road game. Hotlby has been very good too.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 7, 2011 8:59 PM | Report abuse

We're getting outhit by a relatively soft team.

SHOCKING STAT OF THE GAME: Through 2 periods, not one Capitals defenseman has registered a hit, according to the scorekeeper.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 9:00 PM | Report abuse

I think Ovi's delay of game penalty was more out of frustration than anything else. Everyone here has done something less than optimal out of frustration haven't they?

Posted by: FloridaCapsFan | March 7, 2011 9:01 PM | Report abuse

Semin's been very good.

So has Johansson.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 9:02 PM | Report abuse

@hanks1

Don't worry about tmac2yao. He has already reached the conclusion that Ovie has a low hockey IQ and his goal in life is to point out anything and everything that may possibly support his conclusion. Of course he does this without ever mentioning all of the good play Ovie makes, but that is just how he rolls.

Posted by: sgm3 | March 7, 2011 9:02 PM | Report abuse

Chimera just sat there watching that play develop. Fatigue may be setting in but you can't take breaks in that area of the ice.

I do think though that BB has not helped the offense find a role in the new "defensive" system, find new strategies for teams' "figuring us out," and just grow into a next level. His biggest assets--the star scorers--have been defanged.

AND...we did it with Holtby and without Backie in the 3rd! Hard work, good D, and a solid effort...

I dare you goats blood drinkers to complain about this one!

But seriously...I saw at least 2 penalties not called. How do you call an embellishment when the other team had twice as many PPs than us!

Posted by: nfb987 | March 7, 2011 10:01 PM | Report abuse

No matter how well we played in the 3rd, we have to get Backstrom as healthy as possible down the stretch.

We have a little breathing room right now so it may be a good idea to give him a game or two or at least move him down to a lower line for a few games.

Posted by: tmac2yao | March 7, 2011 10:01 PM | Report abuse

Shoot, from what Holtby just said it sounds like Backstrom's hand again. I would rather we rest him and get him better then keep putting him out there..... Wait a minute they just had Semin listed as a C on the Impact Player thing. Nice job VS.

OVI!!!!!

More great Hockey IQ!

Posted by: hanks1 | March 7, 2011 9:55 PM

He was brilliant late. No doubt about that.

He worked hard, showed skill and made smart, savvy plays using hockey IQ and anticipation, on and off the puck.

That doesn't mean he doesn't make more low hockey IQ plays than he should for somebody of his caliber.

Part of the problem is that he innately doesn't think the game well. Part of it is probably on Boudreau for not having the ability to teach him to be a smarter, more complete player.

But 8 has played great in 6 out of the last 8 games and I've acknowledged as much over the last couple of weeks.

Appreciate your comments about Ovi. He is a special player who has such fire, skill and drive that he doesn't always make a "smart" play. But he has great success -- and I don't think any coach can change that or would want to mess with success. Guys I am blown away by Holtby. In his last shoot out he let all three shots in. I thought it would take him years to improve but this is only his second NHL shoot out and it's day and night. And what confidence and focus with just a tiny handful of NHL games in his bag. A shut out against Tampa Bay for a young AHL player is awesome.

Posted by: caraveli | March 7, 2011 10:28 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil2 55 may not have blocked a shot by the score sheet but his block of the pass on the 2 on 1 saved a goal. It was the exact type of play Erskine didn't stop last game. Doesn't show up on the score sheet but a very big reason we won the game.

Posted by: Terptwin | March 7, 2011 10:38 PM | Report abuse

Anyone here think that using the dump & chase on every power play rush is working? I've always thought it was a stupid way to go when a team has a man advantage, but we rely on it 90% of every PP. At some point Gabby needs to look at the stats and suggest that we carry the puck into the offensive zone, and set up a power play as if we have an extra man on the ice. Maybe even the tiniest change would be better than continuing to do the same old thing which has landed us in 25th place for PP. Ugh, it's killing me.

Posted by: Doom_and_Gloom | March 7, 2011 10:19 PM | Report abuse

No, the outcome would have been different. Hulk Holtby would have stopped them too, thereby demoralizing their top three scorers which would have had lingering effects for the remainder of the year. At least this way it is only their head coach who will have to shoulder the blame, from the locker room to the reporters, because he lacked confidence in his star players.

Basically, I'll let those c-suckers worry about it!

I think tmac2yao considers players who take chances with low hockey IQ. They are two separate things.

If a player knows he is taking a risky chance, but chooses to do so because he knows he has the ability to either score or draw penalties with his plays(i.e. Ovechkin) and that his play almost always leads to more goals for his team while he is on the ice than against his team, that isn't low hockey IQ. It is just the style of game he plays.

Ovechkin knows he is not going to beat the defenseman with every move he makes, but it is the fact that he does it a number of times in a game and will beat his defenseman on a few of those moves that leads to very good scoring chances.

It stunk that Ovie didn't score on his OT shot when he stole the puck from Ohlund. He had Roloson badly beat and had the entire left side of the goal open, he just missed the net. That was wide open for a goal. It was a heck of a play by Ovie.

Also, I was not happy with the choice of BB of putting Laich on the ice on the 4-on-3. In a 4-on-3 you need all guys to be a decent threat to score. Laich was set up for the immediate shot and missed it. I think I would've preferred Sturm on that side over Laich for the 4-on-3.

Before the PP started, I was hoping to have Arnott(Arnott in Ove's position) and Wideman on the points, Semin in his spot, and Ovie in Laich's spot. Then start the puck on the left side with Semin and Arnott passing it back and forth and have Ovie drift in front of the goal for either a pass or set up a screen, and then have Wideman go back door behind Ovie as Ovie would draw that left D-man when he drifted toward the middle.

Great game by Semin who looked great out there, he was even mucking it up after the whistle. Also, a great game by Holtby. The kid definitely has the talent to play in the NHL. The problem the last time he came up was that it seemed he maybe got over confident after a few games and started to over commit. His positioning was perfect tonight and he played great. He gave a good interview too, maybe he will give Laich a challenge for best interview.

Finally something we agree on:

"Part of it is probably on Boudreau for not having the ability to teach him to be a smarter, more complete player."

Yes it is. And helping him and the rest of the players evolve to new levels. The "star" players in particular were very frustrated this season.

Outstanding analysis of Ovie's strategy. I completely agree. And it was so very unfortunate that he came sooooo close to scoring on OT, again and again, and luck was against him. At least he let it all loose in the SO. I don't understand why shout outs don't count for points.

Posted by: richmondphil2 | March 7, 2011 10:33 PM
-------------------------------
Well, it could be that said defenseman did a good enough job while he was on the ice keeping the puck from his side of the ice and all the shots that were taken came from the opposite side. Or maybe there were not any shots taken at all while that defenseman was on the ice. Who knows? It is not like a goal was given up while the one defenseman who did not block any shots tonight was on the ice.

Oh, by the way, last night against Florida there was a defenseman who went the whole game and OT without blocking a shot as well. Unfortunately, he was on the ice for a goal against.

Posted by: piratusus | March 7, 2011 11:47 PM | Report abuse

Another thing I noticed after watching the replay of Semin's goal was how Wideman made a perfect pass to Semin. It wasn't a pass that was threaded through a tight hole or anything, but it was a hard crisp pass right on the tape of Semin that allowed Semin to glide over the blue line and get off the shot.

It seems that the Caps have often been missing those passes, either by passing it slightly behind the player forcing them offsides or in front of the player leading to the puck getting tipped into the corner and no scoring chance.

I think Wideman deserves credit for that.

Greetings from Tampa, FL as I sit in the Hyatt downtown just a short walk from the St. Pete Times Forum.

After a thrilling 3-2 OT win in Ft. Lauderdale last night - the drive from Ft. Lauderdale to Tampa was enjoyable. Got into Tampa at 2 a.m. Made a couple stops on the way.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
What a gritty effort by a patient team that yes was outworked a great deal by a Tampa team that pressed way more than the last time these two teams met.

PENALTIES: The Caps have got to stay out of the box. They got burned in FL and again tonight taking too many penalties successively.

NEUVIRTH: Good to hear he wasn't seriously hurt. Hell of a shot. But last time the caps/TB played their first shot of the game went in. This one didn't

HOLTBY: When we went to a shootout I felt we were doomed after seeing his one and only shootout performance this year. KUDOS TO THIS TEENAGER FOR STAYING PATIENT AND NOT COMMITTING AGAINST THEIR SHOOTERS. The kid stood tall.

BACKSTROM: Hopefully he'll come back soon. Good to hear he wanted to come back tonight.

OVIE AND SEMIN: They played hard - sure they did things that had me pulling my hair out and then they do things that amaze. Semin's shot and Ovie's patience on the SO goal.

Folks this game had a great playoff atmosphere and what a pleasure it was being a part of it. Sure the Caps didn't have two dominating efforts down here in FL but bottomline they're walking away with four points and two point lead in the division. Oh and they're only two points back of the conference leading Flyers. Not too shabby. Still ALOT of hockey left.

IT'S BEEN A TWO POINT NIGHT AND FOUR POINT EFFORT IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA.

ICE BREAKERS GOAL SHAKERS.
