Open thread: Capitals at Lightning

By Washington Post Sports Editors

logologoFresh off an overtime loss to the Panthers, the Washington Capitals finish up their two-game Florida road trip tonight at St. Pete Times Forum against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Washington and Tampa Bay have 55 points apiece, so tonight's winner takes sole possession of the top spot in the Southeast Division. "It's huge for us," Caps defenseman John Carlson said. "We want to be on the top, and so do these guys."

Faceoff: 7:30 p.m.; TV: CSN, NHLN; Radio: 1500 AM

Update: 7:07 p.m.
In order to make room for Boyd Gordon on the active roster the Capitals have reassigned forward Brian Willsie to the Hershey Bears.

Based on warm-up here's what the lineup should look like against the Lightning:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Knuble
Chimera-Johansson-Fehr
Laich-Perreault-Beagle
Hendricks-Steckel-Gordon

Defense
Hannan-Green
Alzner-Carlson
Schultz-Poti

Goal
Varlamov
Neuvirth

Scratches: John Erskine, Tyler Sloan and Alexander Semin.

no twitter - you people are awesome!!

is it too early to start chirping about getting the 'live chat' back?

I agree, Capt. - Katie you are doing a great job.

Love the Carlson quote, btw - is this kid a winner, or what?!

@PhilR (from an earlier post)

>>sorry, but Semin hasn't proven he can stay healthy and be a consistent [player]

And Fehr has?? I'm thinking right now, the NHL is a tough place for Russians. As long as things stay that way, Semin will have a hard time. Do we trade him, then, because of what is essentially a questionable moral climate in the league? (Xenophobia - while human - should be challenged, imho.)

If the league is serious about being world class, if it aspires to be the best league in the world, then it should do a better job of creating welcoming conditions for top talent around the world. I'd like to know what Russians playing in North America make of how they are treated here.

Put Hendricks on the top line!

(Xenophobia - while human - should be challenged, imho.)

Thank You!

words like Euro Trash and all the talk about how Russians only care about money are far to common in the league and on this board.

As I have said before...Russian culture especially is very different from N_american. If we had grown up in post-soviet Russia, I guarantee we would have turned out differently.

Captain Kirk and I vote to bring back Coverit Live. Who else is with us?

Posted by: Terptwin | January 12, 2011 6:59 PM | Report abuse

I stand corrected on Ovechkin's assist last night. It was a very good pass. I thought the gap he sent it through was bigger and didn't catch the replay.

Having said that, after watching it a few more it times, it actually falls more under the category of those risky cross-ice passes that I criticize him for but given that we were 2 goals down at that point, it was the time to take some chances. So, all-around, it was a very good play. He threaded a needle.

The problem is that even if we were 2 goals up, I suspect that he'd make the same high-risk pass that could just as easily have been intercepted and taken the other way in transition, which happens a little too often with him and often at the wrong times. He kind of treats most plays and possessions the same, regardless of the circumstances.

That actually brings me to another criticism of his game -- and this really applies to the entire team and coaching, esp. in the past. Ovechkin and others have seemed oblivious at times to the game situation. You never want to completely retreat with a lead and stop playing your game, a la Team Canada in the WJC the other day, but you also don't want to make certain senseless, risky plays that Ovechkin and others have a tendency to make at the wrong times when the game situation dictates that you make simpler, smarter plays.

terptwin, I'm definitely with you and Capt_Kirk. I really miss the live chats, crazy as they could get.

How 'bout Semin for Iginla and a draft choice? Jarome's not gonna be around for too much longer, but he might be the final piece of the puzzle.

Another lousy start to a game for 8...

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 8:04 PM | Report abuse

So much for changing up the PP personnel and positioning. I wish BB would try leaving OV and Green off entirely and give the grinders more time. As others have said, they can't do any worse.

Posted by: wocoliz | January 12, 2011 8:05 PM | Report abuse

Poti with more horrible defense...

I wish McPhee signed him for twice as much for twice as long... he's just an awesome defenseman.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 8:06 PM | Report abuse

Two thoughts so far:

1. Remember when this team played like they gave a [expletive deleted]? Those were the days. The biggest difference between these two teams right now is the care factor.

2. Tom Poti I hate you so much. If this were Feudal Japan, Tom Poti would have committed Hari Kiri at no less than 17 times this season (although you really only need to do it once).

Posted by: VTDuffman | January 12, 2011 8:08 PM | Report abuse

Poti sucks again down low...

Gordon with an awful giveaway...

Pathetic... don't care if we played last night.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Heh, I can think of at least 3 similarities between those two goals...

Posted by: VTDuffman | January 12, 2011 8:12 PM | Report abuse

Ovi just keeps whiffing on his shots and some say he's getting no help... right!!!

Posted by: joek443 | January 12, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Hedman didn't do anything special... I could have intercepted that weaksauce from Gordon.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

Why why why do they come out so flat game in, game out? Is BB no longer capable of getting them up for games?

Posted by: RedRedRed | January 12, 2011 8:13 PM | Report abuse

My goodness... this is embarrassing... let's get some players that know how to compete.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 8:14 PM | Report abuse

The Caps are getting as disinteresting to watch as the Wizards and Redskins. They're fat 'n lazy.

Posted by: VirginiaLonghorn | January 12, 2011 8:15 PM | Report abuse

They look like a bottom third of the NHL team. Maybe that is what they've become.

Posted by: zmega | January 12, 2011 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Very disappointing start AGAIN for the Caps. I agree with VTDuffman--where is the passion (or even interest)?

Posted by: wocoliz | January 12, 2011 8:16 PM | Report abuse

Despite their record Tampa is one of the worst defensive teams in the league, they have a minus goal differential.

They gotta trade some of the deadbeats on this team because this team just doesn't know how to compete unless they're playing the Pens.

Posted by: joek443 | January 12, 2011 8:18 PM | Report abuse

FIRE BB NOWWWWW

Posted by: jp14710 | January 12, 2011 8:19 PM | Report abuse

McPhee, shake this thing up and inject some players with tenacity and higher innate compete levels.

This group is too soft mentally and physically.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 8:20 PM | Report abuse

They don't scare anyone right now. I think they need to just start going firewagon hockey now, I don't think they had a scoring chance in the first period.

Posted by: Iceman27 | January 12, 2011 8:20 PM | Report abuse

gee same old same old ... lol

Posted by: wendel2 | January 12, 2011 8:21 PM | Report abuse

The power play has looked haggard for the last few weeks. So why the hell is Ovechkin still on the point? It's really easy to defend if you keep a forward high and have the defence watch for Green sneaking in. Those are literally the only two plays the Caps have on the PP and every single team knows this. Move OV up, put him the high slot or top of the circles. Or take him off the PP altogether. But do something.

Boy is it ever a treat to watch Poti. Jesus. -2 and counting.

Posted by: Aldred15 | January 12, 2011 8:21 PM | Report abuse

Very sad effort, two nights in a row.

Posted by: MReilly9 | January 12, 2011 8:21 PM | Report abuse

This is terrible. Green is getting worked over. Poti has no clue and Gordon broke a basic hockey rule of not throwing the puck to the middle in your own zone. Are we beginning another downhill slide?

Posted by: billracer | January 12, 2011 8:23 PM | Report abuse

This hurts to watch...

1) Poti looks horrible, what in the world are the coaches watching in the Tape. He should be released after this game.

2) Who is wearing the "8" jersey? What happened to him? Optional looks slow, and predictable.

3) Backstrom needs to take a look at himself in his new 6 million dollar mirror in his new 2 million dollar home because right now he is stealing our money.

Why is Green in the All Star Game? This isn't even his best year. Why is he there this year? Pity?

Posted by: SoaringCaps | January 12, 2011 8:23 PM | Report abuse

I just hope Ted is paying attention to what Stevie Y did to this Bolts team in less than a year, and finally realizes that the problems with this team are systemic and start at the top.

Posted by: VTDuffman | January 12, 2011 8:24 PM | Report abuse

@wocoliz

Agreed! After all the talk, why are we seeing the same old ineffective people on our PP?

how about just start battling for the puck???

Oh...who the heck is going to put Ohlund in his place for crushing Green and hitting Optional in the face?

Posted by: SoaringCaps | January 12, 2011 8:25 PM | Report abuse

I guess you can't use the words p*ssies on here but that's what too many of the Caps are.

Sadly, it's up to George "extend Poti" McPhee to address the personnel issues.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 8:26 PM | Report abuse

@Aldred15

Aagree on Ovi on the point. I thought that this was over a few weeks ago - and again, still he is on the point. He doesn't / can't score from there so WHY is he playing there. He is the best goal scorer on the Caps and needs to be in a better positon on the ice, where he can actually score goals - like along the half boards, in the slot or right in front of the net to knock in rebounds if necessary.

Posted by: MReilly9 | January 12, 2011 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I'm sick of the downward spiral. The players aren't buying into the system. They don't believe it can work no matter what they say in public. Forwards are too low in D'zone and bail too quick in the O'zone. Change occurs or the caps are heading for the Washington Sports Zone, the curse.

Posted by: hsparks3 | January 12, 2011 8:32 PM | Report abuse

How'd you guys like those two moves 8 tried to make on the PP?

You know... where he tried to drag it through the defensemen's skates with no concern about his positioning on the ice and the support behind him??

not to mention that we had a man advantage and there was no need to try that cutesy crap???

The last one he followed up with a stupid Semin-esque retaliatory penalty to boot.

Ovechkin = low, low hockey IQ

Boudreau = incapable of doing anything about teaching 8 to compensate for it

Thom Loverro made some comment about a possible coaching change for the Caps today on Sports Fix. Mentioned Ken Hitchcock as the one they'd go to if things didn't turn around. Don't consider Loverro much of a hockey guy so am guessing he didn't come up with this idea on his own. Wonder who put that bug in his ear and got him to float it on the air .....

Optional should be on the PP but down low. We have Carlson now...keep him on the point.

Posted by: SoaringCaps | January 12, 2011 8:36 PM | Report abuse

Optional is a pretty funny nickname for OV, I will give you that.

I still love that guy, but right now he isn't as good as he thinks he is. I am also getting tired of people saying "they're learning to play in the playoffs" as an excuse for this kind of play. They are being outworked nightly recently. If being outworked is what people assume is playoff hockey then it's going to be a VERY disappointing April for some.

Posted by: Aldred15 | January 12, 2011 8:37 PM | Report abuse

Aldred15 I agree... That crap is all team marketing. Professional hockey players don't need to learn how to play defense. They've been playing defensive systems their whole career. I believe it's the system they're being asked to play that's failing them, that they're not buying into. It could be the very reason why they look like an F'ing Pee Wee team.

Big game, and the team lays an egg.

Didn't pit put 8 against Roloson and we can score 1 over 2 games?

We are in trouble. We have tons of stars all playing like garbage. Optional, Semin, Backstrom, and Green...

Need to do something to send a message.

Posted by: joek443 | January 12, 2011 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Not sure what the hell the problem is, but the Caps are 20 min from another f'in shutout. They talk and talk and talk in the media about how their PP needs tweaking, and then they go out and do NOTHING. Schultz looks lost, Ovi doesn't have the FIRE like he normally does and I see absolutely no chemistry whatsoever. Cycle, pass the puck to the point, look for a shot, shoot or pass to the other side of the point. Never go down low, shoot from the point, look for a rebound, retreat and play D. Same thing, different night. As stated above, the SE is getting muddied up and the Caps could soon find themselves on the lower end of the Division.

Since nobody wants to talk about Tampa Bay's uniforms, I will talk hockey. With the exception of a few role players, Caps don't want to fight for what they get.

They want to skate and be creative. They have been shut down and won't fight their way out.

I am as big a Cap's fan as anybody but my mind goes back to Semin's comment about Crosby. Like it or not,Semin may be right for the European game but the North American game is much more of a shutdown in your face game. Ice ownership is critical.

I just now got on this blog. I was too stunned by the Caps' poor play to get up from the couch to pick up my laptop.

I would like to know from all the experts out there how unusual/usual it is to see a team do a complete turn around and lose their identity. How can such an offensively explosive team suddenlyhave so many difficulties scoring? I am serious. I don't know if this is a unique situation or if it can be explained by any historic patterns.

We talk about this or that player, this or that line but the ENTIRE group of top offensive players has shut down. Tonight, they kept failing to connect passes; had embarrassing turn-overs & aimless shots. Their timing was off and they were out of sync. They are not playing as a team and, as someone said, they do not seem to have a sense of the entire game. How much of it is coaching and how much part of a natural evolution or plan that will make them better in the end? I need some perspective. All I know is that when the while team underperforms uncharacteristically, it is not just individual players,

No reason to go to Verizon to see this kind of product. Heck, no reason to watch them on TV either. Why waste a couple of hours when the result is predictable? Listless play, losing score.

---

It happens more often than you think, which is why most hockey coaches don't tend to have long tenures with their teams, even relatively successful ones.

The reality of the situation is that the team reacted to the 3-1 playoff chokejob to the Habs in the appropriate manner - acknowledged that the lack of emphasis on defensive play hurts them in the playoffs.

The problem is that BB simply cannot coach a team that plays both defense and offense. He can only coach a team that is offensively sucessful at the expense of defense. The second you start actually playing Defense, BB can't figure out how to score goals.

HE simply lacks the ability to coach a team to play a complete game, and when they started emphasizing D, the wheels fell off the scoring, and the regular season wins as well.

"OVi has no accuracy with his shot." Ovi's shots led the NHL in goals and points for years. This whole thread of picking apart skilled and proven players is just not rational. It must be venting out of frustration. The anti Euro talk is an example. The point is the entire team lost its chemistry, coordination, confidence and whatever else propelled to the top of the league last year. The only thing I can think of is that they may need a different type of coaching at this point and possibly the right infusion of a couple of new players in the mix. Watch them win the Stanley Cup in the end and then we will eat our words. But tonight was PAINFUL to watch. Any words of hope?

lol... I'd take either player alone over 8, not factoring in age.

Datsyuk has been better than Ovechkin since day one. 8 just put up more points and was a young player so he got more attention.

I highly doubt Ovechkin is ever as good as either of those players either. He just lacks the innate hockey IQ. Just wait 3 or 4 years when his athleticism is a complete non-advantage. It's already declining.

I think there is something to be said for this interpretation. There is something they are not buying into. They are not on the same page and lack discipline and fire. Don't get how they suddenly lost confidence in the system.

Question: One can argue that BB seems to have made changes by building the team defensively. Why is this not adequate/effective?

FWIW, I figured I was just stating the obvious at this point.

BB better figure something out quick, he's not going to survive another losing streak. PIT fired Michel Theiren at 27-25-5, and he had just taken them to the cup finals the year before. Gabby hasn't taken this team past the second round.

Did I hear JoeB making some excuse: "It's a Wednesday, Caps played last night..."? If you can't get up for a game against the other top team in your division, you've got problems. I hate to burst any bubbles, but this 2010-11 Caps team is okay, but not an elite team in the NHL. I'm not sure what you do when your team doesn't have a lot of emotion or desire. You really can't create it. You can lead a horse to water, but can't make him drink. I guess you ride it out and see what happens, but if they don't turn it up, does BB get the axe in the summer? What about GMGM?

I don't think the Caps demand much in the way of respect on the ice. Only Brads and Hendricks have really shown me much in the way of stones. Add Erskine too. Thats not enough to win championships.

Maybe because they liked it better when they could do pretty much whatever they wanted. I guess it's somewhat like how most kids react when the parents start being more strict after years of having been lenient.

As usual the players deserve most of the blame if not all of it. they had better shape up because I have a strong feeling that they're not gonna like what the next coach will demand from them.

Posted by: kcbrichmond | January 12, 2011 10:31 PM

I've been saying that since the offseason.

Esp. given how McPhee failed last year in addressing our weaknesses through trade and free agency, I felt that it was crucial that he take advantage of both this offseason and the upcoming trade period to give this team a chance to legitimately contend.

He didn't do crap and actually got younger at several critical positions. That's more of what rebuilding teams do, not teams that are supposed to be contending at this point but keep falling short in the playoffs.

He won't likely come close to building the balance we need to truly contend, esp. if he swings and misses like he did with Corvo, Chimera, Belanger, etc... Some liked Belanger but that skinny puss wasn't what this particular team of softies needed.

Posted by: tmac2yao | January 12, 2011 10:39 PM | Report abuse

I agree Ted is a good owner. His problem might be his loyalty. Not really a bad trait in a boss.

Posted by: pkme | January 12, 2011 10:44 PM | Report abuse

All these youngsters at critical positions getting their feet wet may be a positive in the long-run (too soon to tell) but you could make a strong argument that McPhee took a step backward in his offseason moves (and lack of moves).

Then again, he and Mr. Business Of Happiness are planning to be good for a decade... just never good enough.

In the cap era, you need to take chances when you're in the phase of contending (as opposed to rebuilding).

In addition to lacking the ability to build a balanced roster, McPhee and/or Leonsis are too conservative in their team building approach. You have a core of 3 or 4 players and then everything else should be flexible, esp. after a collapse like the one against MTL.

This team needed a shakeup in the worst of ways over the offseason and not a step backward by getting younger. In the short-term, we are probably worse off than last season.

McPhee may be sinking this ship and throwing all these years of rebuilding out the window with his inability to finish the process.

They looked like they weren't even competing in the third period when they were down by 3. For better or worse this team under BB has always competed but they looked dead to me.

I see. So you wanted Chimera to risk a roughing penatly for what, some arbitrary source of pride that doesn't mean squat? And if I remember correctly little Subban was so proud of his little tough guy act that it encouraged him to completely whiff on a neutral zone kill shot that led to a goal later in that same game.

We need to quit focusing on stuff that doesn't matter. Goals matter, getting position matters, playing good defense matters. Getting cheap shots between whistles doesn't mean squat.

Posted by: Dirtbag359 | January 12, 2011 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Remember, there are a bunch of teams that have been rebuilding while we've been entering a supposed "phase of contention."

If McPhee and Leonsis constantly have this long-term approach in the cap era and McPhee can't manage to build a balanced roster, several of those rebuilding teams will suddenly be on the cusp of contention themselves and we may be looking at a rebuilding phase that, at it's peak, delivered maybe 1 or 2 playoff series victories and a Pres. Trophy but nothing more.

TB has Stamkos and Hedman making well below value like Pitt had with Malkin and Chicago had with Towes and Kane.

The Caps had Backstrom there last year but now are top players are all getting paid their worth, meaning that it takes even more savvy from the GM to gain an edge on the competition to build a contending roster.

Does George "extend Poti/trade for Corvo/get younger after bowing out to MTL" McPhee strike you as a savvy GM?

I wouldn't take it for granted that we will even make the playoffs. If we are ranked 5th or 6th in the conference, a bad streak at a critical time could knock us out of the picture altogether. Let's not lose hope. I see a big turn-around as a plaussible scenario.

How much success has McPhee had outside of the 1st round compared to other GMs?

I remember seeing something not long ago that had the Caps ranked very poorly in that area based on games played and possible some other metrics.

At that time, the Caps also had a lot more 1st rd picks than almost every, if not every, team in the league.

He's made some decent picks but I'd love for a real study of this to be done at some point based on drafting success by round factoring in number of picks.

I'm not really sure that McPhee is esp. good at any aspect of his job. He may be average in some area but I don't think he has any special qualities. And the role of the GM is more crucial than it's ever been now that we're in a cap era and there is more parity. Superior roster building with the same available resources (although some teams don't use all of their cap space) is the name of the game at this point.

The cowering to Subban by Chimera was pathetic and, no, he wouldn't have put the Caps a man down as Subban was itching to go with someone, anyone at the time. I was making the point that Chimera appeared apprehensive about confronting a player who was standing over him in a dominating way, as a comparison to a Caps team which doesn't seem to have a lot of heart or motivation to stand up for themselves. At this point I'm just going to sit back and see what happens in April, assuming we don't have a major disaster. I agree with some posters, I'm done trying to figure this team out. I don't really see how losing two in a row is a slump though, when the last game the Caps left without a point was on December 18. Terrible past two games, yes, but a major slump? No. It's pretty simple why we're angry. We just want a Stanley Cup, and we're tired of waiting and seeing every season end in disappointing fashion, whether it's from blowing a series lead, running into a supposed "hot goalie" like TUGNUTT, HEDBERG, or HALAK! Or the unlucky bounces that always go against us.

POSTGAME THOUGHTS:
Wow did this team go back to the beach after last night and they stay there? Are you kidding me? That's the kind of effort you put up against a divisional opponent? Tampa Bay is faster and better. Maybe not as talented but damn close. This was a pitiful performance. I don't care if it was back to back nights. A game this big now - you better get up for it.

That 3rd goal was ridiculous by the defense. You don't let them skate around you like that. And here Boudreau talks about saying how he felt there was emotion on the bench. BS - Boudreau. That was a listless efforts. 23 measly easy shots for Roloson whose becoming the new Halak for the Caps.

Ovechkin and Backstrom - if Boudreau had any balls I would scratch both of these players. Hell if it were me I'd scratch them for Vancouver game. Call me a crazy but sometimes sitting back and watching a game may not solve all problems but may give them a chance to just watch - think and who knows. Something is up. It's sad when Ovie breaks more sticks than his actual shots on goal.

And again our D was just off. Again Tampa is faster and better than the Caps right now. Plain and simple. I really hope McPhee is not sitting there thinking his team is better than Tampa right now. This next month is going to get very interesting.

No drive to the net - no second chances. Roloson probably got bored tonight. Just pathetic. I'm done.

Get home and rebound against Vancouver.

It's been a disgusting night.

Epic Fail for the team tonight! The offensive slump is beyond being a slump at this point. Their play has me more than a little bit worried about the rest of this season.

Yes, I knew the guys weren't going to improve forever but did we expect a team, whose core group of guys is 27 and under, to all collectively slump this year? One or two maybe but all of them? It's the type of collapse I would have expected to be more likely from a team whose core is 33 years old, not a young team.

I feel like you overestimate it. The Red Wings are constantly at the bottom of the league in fights per game yet year in and year out they're a contender. The Blackhawks last year were 21st in fights per game yet they hoisted the Stanley Cup after beating the Broad Street Bullies. The Pens were 23rd in fights per game. Skill will beat intimidation every time.

Face it fighting is for the fans. All of that talk about intimidation and such having an impact on the bottom line is all part of some weird Romanticism for the game. And you know what? It might work for one game, but over a 7 game series if you don't have enough skill, or in our case, the ability to grasp the basic fundamentals then you're not going to win.

Face it fighting is for the fans. All of that talk about intimidation and such having an impact on the bottom line is all part of some weird Romanticism for the game.

Ok, fighting is just for the fans. Yeah, right.

Apparently, BB shares your sentiments and we'll never know to what extent a little toughness could carry this team. I suppose we'll continue trying to be the Red Wings Lite and we'll see many more efforts like tonight.

First Willsie and then Gordon, but no shot for DJK? Time for BB and the team to come clean about his situation and get it resolved one way or the other. And to think the Pens have been talking retribution in the media....

Clearly you underestimate the value of attitude, intimidation, and aggression

Ditto, it actually has NOTHING to do with fighting in the playoffs since nobody fights except in the garbage time.

Posted by: joek443 | January 12, 2011 11:36 PM | Report abuse

Didn't pit put 8 against Roloson and we can score 1 over 2 games?

We are in trouble. We have tons of stars all playing like garbage. Optional, Semin, Backstrom, and Green...

Need to do something to send a message.

Posted by: SoaringCaps

If the players really quit on BB they wouldn't have won the Winter Classic against the Pens. If you are really quitting on your coach you would not show up in the biggest regular season game of the year(biggest by how many people are watching and paying attention).

Also, it was a horrible game, but GMGM shouldn't, and won't, make a trade because of one bad loss. The Caps have lost ONE game in regulation over the last 10 games.

They are 6-1-3 in their last 10 games. That is 15 points over a 10 game span.

ONLY Vancouver has been better over their past 10 games, and ONLY Boston has been equal.

The Caps need to make a trade before the deadline to improve the offense, absolutely. It needs to be a 2nd line center, absolutely. They need this for a solid chance at winning the SC, absolutely. But there has been one regulation loss in the past 10 games, it's not time to jump off the bridge yet. Especially considering that record against the rest of the leagues record in their own past 10 games.

i blame flash... and nylander... and theodore... and hanlon...

stat fact II:
per TB broadcast wrapup...
in the first 96 meetings between TB and the caps -> TB had 2 shutouts
in the last 2 meetings (a span of 9 days) -> TB gets 2 more

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 12, 2011 11:49 PM | Report abuse

Here is a statistical note:

In the 25 games the Caps played before the Flash trade they scored 3.44 Goals/gm

In the 19 games the Caps played after the Flash trade they scored 2.11 Goals/gm

That sample size is starting to get large enough that the stat has some substance.

Maybe having Flash gave the Caps so much depth of skill that it either wore down defenses, or just so many lines had skill that some line was going to create scoring opportunities. Flash has a lot of skill and was good on the rush. In addition, he was a very skilled left-handeder, which would be good for the PP win Backstrom comes off.

I think people may have to admit that Flash had a much bigger impact on the Caps and their offensive production than they thought he did when he was on the Caps.

The difference between 3.44 Goals/gm and 2.11 Goals/gm is huge. And that 3.44 Goals/gm was not an aberration when you consider last year's stats also.

Maybe trading Flash was the worst thing for the team(although I like how Hannan is playing now). Maybe they should've traded Laich.

Or better yet, maybe they should trade Laich, or at least get rid of him in the offseason if he wants anything more than $2M/yr. IMO, Laich is the most overrated player on the Caps.

Different people here have suggested trading Ovi or Semin (along with other people) for Zetterberg and Datsyuk. While I admire their talent and play, they are both over 30. With the Caps' luck, if we made that trade, they would probably get injured and/or have a bad season.

300 replies amd not one drop of Kool Aid.

Not only have the players quit on the coach but the CI fans are quitting on the team.

Of course all 300 of us don't know what we're talking about - if we did, we'd be in the game.

As for Ovechkin, can we start with an MRI and full slate of blood tests? He has become the defeintion of mediocre in the NHL over the last six weeks. The All-Star Game selection? A gift from a league that had no choice. The look on his face? Like a lost child. Gambling debts? Russian mafia? A girlfriend left him? His other grandfather died? IRS on his trial? Putin called him a loser? The Gillette deal has resulted in Samson Syndrome?

I will tell you the answer - he is Orthodox. My wife is also. They need to check for a "mati." Look it up. It's the Evil Eye. Someone has put a hex on him. The old ladies can figure this out with dipping something from him into olive oil. Then the old ladies have to conjure a recipe to fix it. Ovechkin needs to be "de-matified" and have the Evil Eye purged.

SGM3 - if all things were the same I'd buy your argument however changing from an all offensive system to a more defensive system has a lot more to do with that than Flash not being here.

@sgm3

The question is .. what 2nd line centers will be available at the deadline and what assets do we have that are available?

i didn't drink any goats blood tonight - but i must admit, i didn't bother with having kool-aid either

Posted by: Capt_Kirk_in_AZ | January 13, 2011 12:17 AM | Report abuse

@Tom

I couldn't agree more and I'm not buying this more defensive style crap. A more defensive system has ZERO to do with the PP. Our PP sucks plain and simple. Florida who has the worst PP in the league is better than us over the past 2 months and they even scored 3 the other night against us. This defensive crap is just an excuse and just talk. OV isn't scoring, Backy isn't scoring or getting OV the puck in open space, Greeny isn't scoring like he did last yr, Knuble isn't scoring, Semin isn't scoring and it has NOTHING to do with a more defensive system.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | January 13, 2011 12:21 AM | Report abuse

OK, I posted too quick...

sgm...you've just overdosed on Kool Aid.

You actually think Flash had a positive effect on this team? You saw the stats from last year - he had the worst +/- and was worst at penalties drawn vs penalties made. Flash is nothing but a welfare recipient's version of Alex Semin.

The problem is that over the last six weeks Ovechkin and Backstrom have transformed from Ovechkin and Backstrom to Laurel and Hardy. Backstrom had begun to develop a reputation as a solid defender but now he's getting thrown around like the girl on roofies at the college frat party. Ovi can't skate without falling; can't shoot w/o whiffing or breaking his stick; can't backcheck w/o getting a slashing call and can't bring the puck in the zone w/o having it poked away.

Ovi and Backie are like the movie with Dan Akroyd and Eddie Murphy when Akroyd lost everythiong and Eddie Murphy (the goalie du joir) gained it all.

Maybe we can win if BB bets on OJ futures.

It seems almost plausible that George "Faustus" McPhee sold his soul 7 years ago to rid the team of Jagr and Mephistophilis has just stopped by to collect the balance due.

Tonight's game was uglier than Joan Rivers both before AND AFTER her surgeries.

We want the Canucks!

Posted by: tominsocal1 | January 13, 2011 12:26 AM | Report abuse

If you think Backstrom is anythink like his normal self all you have to do is look at how he got absolutely destroyed tonight along the boards by Ohlund. You never ever see him get hit like that. He is always able to dodge that big hit at the last moment and always stays strong on the puck, not anymore. WTF is going on? I flat don't get it but I tell ya, this team does not pass the "eye ball test" in any shape or form. I don't know what you change at this point as I'm as baffled as anyone but a good start might be a new coach.

Tom, I don't think we want anything to do with Vancouver the way we're playing now.

Sense my frustration?

I need a tip for how to best clean stains from my dress shirt and tie I wore while watching the game after work. Unfortunately, I spit goat's blood all over myself after Tampa scored the third goal. Any help? I wanted to wipe it off with a Kool-Aid soaked washcloth but couldn't find any.

poker: You'll notice when FL scored on us the other night they had players in the crease!

On another subject:

"On January 23, 2004, he was traded to the New York Rangers for Anson Carter and an agreement that Washington would pay approximately four million dollars per year of Jágr's salary. Jágr also agreed to defer (with interest) $1 million per year for the remainder of his contract to allow the trade to go ahead."

See there, it's been almost exactly 7 years. 7 years. First the dark and brooding Jagr comes to the Caps from Transylvania (well, not quite). He helps turn a decent franchise into a doormat. The excuses are plentiful. Now suddently we are watching the unfolding of the 7 Signs of the Capitals Apocalypse.

1) Players on the Caps speak strange, biblical languages.
2) Caps fandom turns blood red.
3) Ticket office is flooded with season ticket requests.
4) A pregnant Demi Moore attends a Caps game and Alexander Semin first commits a lazy stick foul and then asks Moore if she will, "Go to the penalty box for me?"
5) Ovechkin shaves. Every day.
6) Micheal Nylander. Think about it.

And the 7th Sign of the Capitals Apocalypse:

Moore gives birth and the newborn baby goes into the corner against the Caps and comes out with the puck.

Hey Slurpeesarecool, maybe you can help with the goat's blood stains. What do you use clean off the cherry slurpee stains when you are working third shift at the 7-11? Oh, by the way, how did your Habs do tonight?

You're wrong and I can prove it...in fact, Laich is the team's best forward. Isn't that what Neil Whatshisname proved with his statistical data the other day? Geeze. I'm with you on this one, though there's a fairly long list right behind him.

poker: Was really funny because as a Orlando resident for 14 years I heard plenty of games with Bobby the (whining) Chief Taylor calling color for the Bolts.

Taylor whines almost as much as Potvin for the Panthers.

Anyway, Ohlund has been an absolute goon the last two games and then he gets hurt late in the game. Taylor wants to open a federal investigation why Caps aren't penalized, until he watches replay and realizes Ohlund hurt himself running into Knuble.

Hey Booby the Chief Taylor: Shut the F up already you whiny dirt bag!

@tominsocal1

The results are the results:

3.44 goals/gm over 25 games before Flash trade

2.11 goals/gm over 19 games after Flash trade

That isn't a 0.1 or 0.1 difference. That is a 1.3 goals/gm difference. That has been the only major change in the players over that time.

Does system have something to do with it, sure. But a 25 game sample size and a 18 game sample size are decent sizes. To just say that it happened purely because of coincidence is not a very convincing argument.

I do find it funny that you say that I drink Kool-Aid when all I posted were real statistics that show the Caps have tied for the 2nd best record in the NHL over the past 10 games. You can't deny that, it is fact. Take from it what you will, but that statement is fact.

Lastly:

"Of course all 300 of us don't know what we're talking about - if we did, we'd be in the game."

@tominsocal1

Can you take things out of context anymore. Are you not capable of realizing that GMGMs statement was directed towards writers and TV analysts(i.e. Mike Milbury or Barry Melrose) who had worked in the game but are out because they were poor at their jobs. It was not directed toward you or any other fan.

This is true for the networks in all sports, they end up hiring former coaches or GMs who are only available because they were fired for being horrible at their job.

Then those "expert" analysts are hired to start giving their opinions on how to GM or coach a team, like it is the absolute right way. Hence, the "if they were so smart they would still be in the game" (GMGM didn't use the word "still" but it has the same effect).

i.e. Matt Millen on ESPN
i.e. Steve Phillips on ESPN
i.e. Mike Milbury NBC and TSN
i.e. (I'm sure there is an NBA analyst)
i.e. Herm Edwards
i.e. Barry Melrose
etc., etc.

So we're gonna see BB on Versus one day?

Posted by: pokerface1208 | January 13, 2011 1:12 AM | Report abuse

No pucks deep... no forecheck... this team is in HUGE trouble... look at the upcoming schedule. Vancouver, Philly, some Western teams and Pitt and the end of the month. Not to mention that Caps are horrible on the road this year. Just 7 teams with worse road record. Couple that with the fact that CAPS HAVE LEAST AMOUNT of home games remaining... and you do the math. This team is is deep doo-doo and I'm done saying they need to have more heart, work harder, blah blah blah. That's all cliche b.s. I think we've seen enough of BB, but no idea if a change will spark the team or deflate it further. Who knows? Guess we'll never know until a change is made. This inconsistency and lack of showing up in the 1st pd and crap pp is total b.s. The whole outfit reeks of mediocrity...
