Caps Are On The Clock

I guess the Caps are waiting until the last minute before making their final move. Twenty-five players were still on the roster as of this morning, though Jakub Klepis wasn't invited to pose for the team picture, which was taken earlier. Read into that what you will.

I'm guessing Klepis is as good as gone, leaving one more cut needing to be made. That can mean a trade, a demotion of a player who is waiver exempt, or putting someone on injured reserve. I'm guessing the latter.

We'll know for sure by 3 p.m., which is the deadline for setting the opening night roster.

Update:Center David Steckel told me he has moved into corporate housing. So I guess that means he's staying. So scratch him off the list of candidates to be cut.

Update:Defenseman Steve Eminger has been put on IR. So the Caps are down to 23.

Update:Sorry this is a few hours late, but I was tied up with my NHL preview. Some of you will be glad to know I picked the Caps to get into the playoffs as the eighth seed.

Anywho, here's the opening night lineup:

Forwards:

Backstrom
Bradley
Brashear
Clark
Fehr#
Fleischmann
Gordon
Kozlov
Laich
Nylander
Ovechkin
Pettinger
Semin
Steckel
Sutherby

Defense:

Eminger*
Erskine
Green
Jurcina
Morrisonn
Pothier
Poti
Schultz

Goalies:

Kolzig
Johnson

Was Eminger in a cast, real or otherwise?

Posted by: 20008 | October 2, 2007 12:46 PM | Report abuse

I'm sticking to my guess that Suts goes on IR.

Posted by: Jay | October 2, 2007 12:47 PM | Report abuse

We know eminger was hurt earlier in the summer and in camp, so I bet they could get away with placing him on the IR with a "lingering" injury.

If they send green down...gah!!!

Posted by: Mike | October 2, 2007 12:48 PM | Report abuse

Eminger is on the team, Erskine, bradley or Suts is gonna be the one left off. I wouldn't mind losing all three of them, maybe packaging them together for a 7th round pick.

Posted by: Rob | October 2, 2007 12:57 PM | Report abuse

Let's see, we have Eminger, Semin, and Suts going on IR - maybe Green will develop a hangnail so he can join them ;).
I assume the CBA has limitations on the usage of the IR to prevent any shenanigans by wily GM's.

Posted by: Shaggy | October 2, 2007 1:06 PM | Report abuse

OK guys, get close for a picture now....ok Jakub - you move a little to the left...a little more...a little more....yeah, shut that door behind you....ok perfect. Everyone smile!

Poor guy!

Posted by: Stormblue | October 2, 2007 1:08 PM | Report abuse

Erskine was a late scratch from the last game...which could open the door for the IR reason.

Posted by: strungout | October 2, 2007 1:12 PM | Report abuse

Puckhead Thoughts Blog is reporting that Klepis has been traded to the Blackhawks. Any truth to that rumor Tarik?

Posted by: DCProSportsReport | October 2, 2007 1:24 PM | Report abuse

If they cut Sutherby that would be a big mistake. I like this kid, he may not score a lot of points, but he does the dirty work and he can fight. He would be a great captain. Keep an eye on Clark, was he worth the money to be a third line player?

Posted by: Keep Sutherby | October 2, 2007 1:24 PM | Report abuse

They can't just "cut" Sutherby. He would have to go on waivers and since he was not placed on waivers he'd have to either be on the active roster, traded or placed on IR.

Sutherby has a lingering problem with his thumb that appeared to be causing him some discomfort, as mentioned by Tarik in comments yesterday. He played in just one preseason game and we've heard very little about him. All of that is what leads me to believe he's going on IR.

Posted by: Jay | October 2, 2007 1:31 PM | Report abuse

Klepis probably couldn't have been traded unless he had been signed to a contract. Unless, of course, they traded his "rights."

Posted by: stepguybrian | October 2, 2007 1:40 PM | Report abuse

Semins and Clark traded for a first round pick next year. The other team's name was not disclosed but I heard it resided in Pennsylvania.
Go figure! What the heck is going on?

Posted by: Hollycow | October 2, 2007 1:47 PM | Report abuse

Well that was a weak attempt at starting a firestorm...

Posted by: HolyOlie | October 2, 2007 1:49 PM | Report abuse

If that team in PA throws in this past years#1 maybe I'd do it

Posted by: dave | October 2, 2007 1:57 PM | Report abuse

Arguably your best sniper and your team captain for a first rounder from Pittsburgh or Philly? Wow - the rebuild isn't over after all!!! Let's develop one of the best LW's in the league and then, shrewdly acquire a 30-goal scoring leader who galvanized the team, and THEN, trade them both!!!
"Holly" cow, that is some good weed you are selling.

Posted by: Shaggy | October 2, 2007 2:00 PM | Report abuse

Keep Sutherby:

Are you seriously asking if Clark was worth the money? What he is paid is less than many 3rd line players around the league.

Definitely Clark is worth the money he is being paid.

Posted by: TAL | October 2, 2007 2:32 PM | Report abuse

This is just crazy. Both Semin and Clark are staying. And not just for this year.

Posted by: Finn | October 2, 2007 2:36 PM | Report abuse

Sutherby had 2 points in 2 games, it isn't like he didn't do anything this preseason.

Posted by: ASM | October 2, 2007 2:43 PM | Report abuse

ASM,

For veteran's such as Sutherby, preseason points aren't much of a factor in determining whether they make the roster. Sutherby has played in NHL games as far back as the 2001-2002 season (albeit only 7 that year) so the coaching staff and front office must take into consideration his body of work and determine whether Sutherby is worthy of a roster spot. I for one think he has peaked and wont see considerable improvement from here on out in his career. Its time to give someone else (Steckel) as shot, in my opinion.

Posted by: Leigh | October 2, 2007 2:52 PM | Report abuse

What the heck does "corporate housing" mean?

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | October 2, 2007 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Locker rooms at Kettler :)

Posted by: Blank | October 2, 2007 2:59 PM | Report abuse

freakinpeakin,

Corporate housing means he get's to stay in Uncle Ted's guest house.

Posted by: Leigh | October 2, 2007 2:59 PM | Report abuse

I know that they don't put too much into the preseason, but he potentially had an off year last season and what just commenting that he hasn't been non-exsitant this preseason. He is 24, I don't think he has necessarily peaked.

Posted by: ASM | October 2, 2007 3:01 PM | Report abuse

Corporate housing = Ovechkin's Escalade (but only if he washes it)

Posted by: Shaggy | October 2, 2007 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Leigh, that sounds dirty. :)

Blank, I am sure they are nicer than the housing facilities at Piney Orchard. :)

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | October 2, 2007 3:03 PM | Report abuse

It's after 3pm. What's the roster?

Posted by: Blank | October 2, 2007 3:05 PM | Report abuse

Blank, I'll put money on the fact taht Ovechkin cracked the line-up.

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | October 2, 2007 3:08 PM | Report abuse

yeah, i'm on tenterhooks here!

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | October 2, 2007 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Survey says?

Posted by: HolyOlie | October 2, 2007 3:09 PM | Report abuse

For no reason I thought that there would be a last minute trade. I don't know why. Not that I am complaining.

i want some of holycow's product, haha

usein the IR route is the safest choice for awhile, but either steckel or sutherby has to go. and keep two scrathed defenceman. ride out sutherbys contract this year unles he proves worthy of another year. there are plenty of role players on the team.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2007 3:11 PM | Report abuse

It wasnt intended to be dirty. I didn't say corporate housing was spooning Ted in the Leonsis master bedroom....lol

Posted by: A Hardwick | October 2, 2007 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Leigh, that was actually more of an inside joke for someone else who reads these as well. But, nice response.

Posted by: freakinandpeakin | October 2, 2007 3:29 PM | Report abuse

Hmm...and I thought comments much like those above were supposed to be monitored more closely? Can we keep this discussion on hockey please?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2007 3:30 PM | Report abuse

So what will the lines look like now when they are down to 23?

Posted by: Gävletös | October 2, 2007 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Hey "____", I thought we were supposed to enter a name to go along with our comments. Try following directions.

Posted by: Leigh | October 2, 2007 3:32 PM | Report abuse

IR for Eminger. Ouch. Quite a fal lfrom last year. I hope he heals up fairly quickly. Or maybe not to keep the roster from going nuts.

Posted by: EricS | October 2, 2007 3:43 PM | Report abuse

Ok so what now? is the IR move just to wait and see if we can get a trade or for someone to fall on their face the opening week?

Who goes out for Fehr?

Posted by: Dang | October 2, 2007 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Tarik,

Did you ever get to sit down with Semin for that interview? With all the roster hooplah, I didn't see anything from you re: that interview, did it go down? Was there an interpreter?

Posted by: cccp11 | October 2, 2007 4:36 PM | Report abuse

People, the caps don't need to do anything else, there at 23 that's the limit, who is here now, is who is staying here for now.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2007 4:49 PM | Report abuse

the caps don't need to make another move, untill someone comes off of IR.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2007 4:50 PM | Report abuse

wen fehr is healthy smart one

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2007 4:52 PM | Report abuse

My Guess for lines...

Ovi - Kozlov - Flash
Semin - Nylander - Backstrom
Pettinger - Gordon - Clark
Brashear - Steckel - Laich

Poti - Green
Mo - Juice
Schultz - Pothier

Kolzig
Johnny

Sutherby, Bradley, Erskine in the box
Eminger, Fehr on IR

Posted by: Mike | October 2, 2007 4:55 PM | Report abuse

Yes that was my question. What do you think is going to happen when Fehr comes back. I understand the caps are at 23 now. Lets now look ahead.

Posted by: Dang | October 2, 2007 5:01 PM | Report abuse

I want to join cccp11 and ask the same question

Posted by: Blank | October 2, 2007 5:02 PM | Report abuse

So many things can happen, it might be pointless to predict. there will always be more injuries.

Posted by: Anonymous | October 2, 2007 5:04 PM | Report abuse

Semin's ankle is a good example of this. Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come or a nagging injury for him.
Besides having a good squad on opening night, we need to have some good luck injury-wise during the length of the season.

Posted by: pmoravek | October 2, 2007 8:34 PM | Report abuse

It's my guess that Suds and Bradley will be sharing most of the time on the 4th. line rw, with Laich the odd man out. both bring more grit to the lineup than Bruce. And, Hanlon does like plenty of grit in his lineup. So do I.

Posted by: Puckguru | October 2, 2007 9:19 PM | Report abuse

Tarik, I assume your article goes on to predict a first round playoff series against the Penguins, and then a Caps run to the Cup, eh?

Posted by: Dezlboy | October 2, 2007 9:25 PM | Report abuse

yes, i did sit down with semin. that story will run in Friday's paper. I wrote a story on July's free agent madness for tomorrow's paper.

Posted by: Tarik | October 2, 2007 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Thoughts:

#1 - I'm thinking that it would be tough to trade a borderline player right before rosters have to be finalized.

In other words, why would a team give away even a draft pick for Eminger (or Sutherby/Laich/Bradley for that matter) if they knew he wasn't going to make the team? They could just claim him on waivers.

#2 - If Eminger really is injured, why wasn't he placed on injured reserve Monday? Or all day Tuesday? Why wait until the last minute?

If you combine my two thoughts with the "possible trade" comment Ted made on his blog, it makes it seem like Eminger might have been on the trading block, but GM wasn't getting worthy offers.

If his injury is bogus, it's a tactic that won't hold up long -- they're going to have to do something to truly finalize the roster soon.

Enough of all that.. I can't wait for the season!

Posted by: Oneal | October 3, 2007 12:26 AM | Report abuse

I think the point is, is that it gives the caps more tryout time so bubble players can prove their worth when it counts

Posted by: czechsmix | October 3, 2007 1:02 AM | Report abuse

Eminger hasn't played (m)any preseason games, so it's conceivable that he's injured. Still, they'll need to figure out who they're getting rid of soon.

Here's my guess. GMGM didn't want to fully disclose Eminger's injury because he was looking for a trade. He kept the injury under the table until GMs contacted him about Emmy. A little underhanded, but it makes sense as to why Eminger neither played nor was reported as injured.

Of course that's all speculation. Question for the more knowledgeable:

Does Schultz have to clear waivers on the way back up were we to send him to Hershey? My vote is to send him down when Emmy heels (assuming he's actually injured) and send Schultz back for some more development time til we need to pull a D-man up (due to injury).

Posted by: Raber | October 3, 2007 1:29 AM | Report abuse

I honestly think at this time Erskine fills a role we no longer need with a guy like Brashear. The last thing we need is more penalties!

Posted by: czechsmix | October 3, 2007 1:44 AM | Report abuse

Ya Gotta love Brian Burke. check out the 1-on-1 video at TSN. Shoot straight, fly right.

Eminger hurt his ankle in July. I wrote about it last week. he really is a bit hurt.

Posted by: Tarik | October 3, 2007 7:53 AM | Report abuse

TARIK - how's Semin's ankle? Thx.

Posted by: Dezlboy | October 3, 2007 8:13 AM | Report abuse

good question, how is semin recovering?
will he be ready friday

Gotta,
You are right, great 1-on-1 w/ Brian Burke. That's the way to run things! Very straight forward, great evaluator of talent, and most importantly of all honesty & class! Maybe GMGM and Glen should have stayed longer in Vancouver to learn more from the man.
On another note, it will be great to see the Ducks on VS. tonight against the Wings. Not just for the game but to see Doug "Sluggo" Shearer behind the bench.
