The Gaetan Duchesne Cup

In an effort to spice up this week's intra-squad scrimmages (and have a little fun), Coach Bruce Boudreau has created a three team tournament in which each squad will play twice. The award will be the Gaeten Duchesne Cup, named after the former Capitals winger who died suddenly last year from a heart attack.

Team A will be coached by Dean Evason and Blaine Forsythe, whose lineup is highlighted by Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Viktor Kozlov, Tom Poti and Simeon Varlamov. Team B will be coached by Boudreau and Bob Woods, who's got Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Semin, Brooks Laich and Jose Theodore. Team C, meantime, will be coached by Jay Leach and Mark French and it features Michael Nylander, Chris Clark, Mike Green, Francois Bouchard, Mathieu Perrealt, Karl Alzner and Brent Johnson.

"Gaetan was an eighth round draft choice and made the team. The epitomy of training camp is about the guys trying their [butts] off to make the team," Boudreau said. "What better guy could we have than Gaetan?"

Boudreau also pointed out that Evason and Forsythe won the right (in a game of rock, paper scissors) to pick first and they took Team A. (No brainer, right?)

If all three teams go 1-1, the tiebreaker will be goal differential.

Finally, something that makes sense.
Glad BB understands the importance of RPS.

Enough with the stupid slogans, on with some competition.
I also hope BB stands by his words and chooses the best players based on their camp, not their contract.
Good luck with that.

oh decisions decisions.. which team to watch!! i don't have the time to watch all of them, i'm stuck between A and B!

There isnt much as of open spots available on the big squad. The only open spot is 1 or 2 on defense.

OV - lock
Backstrom - lock
Kozlov - lock
Fedorov - lock
Laich - lock
Semin - lock
Nylander - lock
Clark - lock
Brashear - lock
Steckel - lock
Bradley - lock
Fehr - needs to play well
Flash - needs to play well
Gordon - needs to play well

on the outside looking in
Bourque
Bouchard
Perrault
Beagle
Osala
A.Gordon
Laing
Aucoin

Green - lock
Morrisonn - lock
Poti - lock
Schultz - lock
Alzner - needs to play well
Jurcina - needs to play well
Erskine - needs to play well
Lepisto - needs to play well

everyone else has no chance even if they score 45 goals during the rest of training camp.

Posted by: JSchon | September 20, 2008 3:25 PM | Report abuse

"no chance" ?

Hell, why bother showing up ?

I'm 100% certain BB has made it clear that every player will start camp at the same level. If what he tells these guys is true remains to be seen, however any legit coach with his self respect still in tact, will adhere to his comments.

Obviously a core group will always be visibly better than others, but I suspect there are always 3-4 spots on forward and 2 spots (at least) on D worth fighting for.

If the Caps front office get involved with on ice decisions, look for disaster (again).

Posted by: Chief | September 20, 2008 3:41 PM | Report abuse

I love BB, this is why he is winning coach. He is creative, and gets that working hard doesn't mean that you can't have fun at the same time. I think this is a great way start to the season and kick off the "new" attitude of the Caps as a team, plus it will be fun to watch!

Posted by: Puddin_An_Semin | September 20, 2008 3:52 PM | Report abuse

Chief, SabresfaninDC, or whatever other alias you use, why do you even bother? Seriously don't you have anything better to do?

Being critical is one thing, going overboard with a vendetta against someone is another. Who the hell in the caps organization screwed you over? Did you get dumped by a caps fan? Seriously, try to find something else to do and relax. People won't bite. Don't be bitter man.

peerless, come out you coward! Mike Green never cuts corners! Don't hate just because I got $5 mil to spend on watches, sunglasses, and high tops.

JSchon & 94,

Good hanging with you two there. Shame the spirit squad wouldn't share any pizza.

Posted by: Steve R | September 20, 2008 5:41 PM | Report abuse

Just saw Boudreau's press conference on comcast. Coach of the year, new contract and he's still wearing that striped purple shirt. What's it going to take for Joe Bank or Bruno Cipriani to deliver this guy some new polos?

Posted by: markfromparkville | September 20, 2008 6:53 PM | Report abuse

Dont worry mark, me and coach are going to check out some hugo boss tomms after the scrimmage

Posted by: mike green | September 20, 2008 7:04 PM | Report abuse

I've got a lot of catching up to do, but wanted to respond to a couple of things real quick ...

94:
Why did Tarik call you a jerk? Also, you wrote: "... [it] is really cool to talk to a girl with a great grasp on the game." Hello?!?!? ;-)

Steve:
Was the spirit squad really there?

Did anyone ever figure out if Backs aggrevated his ankle or was he just testing it out a little bit?

Posted by: Boo! | September 20, 2008 7:10 PM | Report abuse

so with these "teams" im assuming they might be thinking of having clark and nyls on third line together....which makes sense giving them a chance to test the injuries and get back in the game.

i mean lines can always be changed

Posted by: Mike | September 20, 2008 7:21 PM | Report abuse

I thought the line combinations from the "teams" was certainly interesting. Laich on the second line with Clark and Nyls together.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | September 20, 2008 7:29 PM | Report abuse

There are not 3 or 4 positions available as forwards. Maybe where certain guys will play are still up in the air but not the actual positions.

Why do you come to camp? That's easy.

Who gets called up first due to injury, we have 3 major ones last. Thats why you show up.

Why else do you show up? Because if you dont, you get cut.

Why else do you show up? To get paid.

Why else do you show up? To get in shape for a long season whether or not you're playing in the NHL, AHL or minor leagues.

So many reasons Delle Rovere showed up even though he had NO shot to make the team.

After talking to TEB, the lines might be...

OV/Backstrom/Kozlov
Laich/Fedorov/Semin
Flash/Nylander/Clark
Brashear/Steckel/Gordon

and unless an injury is part of the decision process or Flash forgets how to skate backwards, its about 95% set in stone. Fehr + Gordon in the press booth. Its a shame, I was hoping Fehr to break out this season.

Defensively, there are 2 spots open.

Posted by: JSchon | September 20, 2008 7:30 PM | Report abuse

I'm not 100% sure, but I saw what seemed to be the spirit squad. They were getting dressed for pictures of something.

Bimbo level = Yellow

As for why Tarik called "94" jerk? 94 set him up to do it. We went down to say yo to TEB and 94 didnt introduce himself. TEB thanked me for policing the blog last night and 94 mentioned yeah there are a bunch of jerks on there "like 94". So TEB agreed with him. Very funny moment.

Katie was there and we talked to her at length. She knows her stuff and would probably be a very cool person to share a beer with, a ham sandwich even.

As for Backstrom, as the practice got further into it, the drills required more strenuous activity. Backstrom was skating fine just at a low level, I'm sure taking him out of further practice was only precautionary.

Yikes... this is long post.

Posted by: JSchon | September 20, 2008 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, pretty sure Backstrom was just testing stuff.. he was the only dude in an orange jersey and stuff.

Did Brian Mitchell approve of the caps practice?

I'm so jealous, Just hearing all the stories makes me want to hop in the car and move back to DC..... If only SC had hockey close - have to make some trips to Charleston this year to see some of our young boys play! Awesome reporting all!!!@JSchon - I agree there is only two spots at best and mainly I see changes on "D" - I mean hopefully I see changes on "D"!!!

Posted by: Greenie | September 20, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

@Boo - Let me know if your going to the Canes/Caps game in Carolina and we will try to meet! That would be fun!! Love to have another Caps fan to in the house! I'll keep you posted on when they go on sale!!!

Posted by: Greenie | September 20, 2008 9:01 PM | Report abuse

JSchon, did you mean Bradley in the press box, because Gordon's in your lineup...

Posted by: honed | September 20, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

Ooops... Bradley is the 4th line RW, not Gordon.

Posted by: JSchon | September 20, 2008 9:07 PM | Report abuse

And speaking of Duchesne, it was pretty cool to see his son between the pipes on Thursday, even if he was wearing orange and black. Gaetan would have been proud. And kudos to BB for keeping his memory alive.

Posted by: Gumpper | September 20, 2008 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Cool, thanks everyone for the updates. I was determined to study today, took my laptop to the library and everything, and pretty much spent the entire time hitting refresh on various caps site. Maybe tomorrow I will end the charade and actually go watch the scrimmage.

What do you think are the odds that Ovie starts working the PK some this year? Seems to me that he would become an even bigger weapon if that were the case.

Posted by: Mike | September 20, 2008 9:45 PM | Report abuse

You want OV firing shots from the point? Then Green down low or in the slot?

An awful idea.

Posted by: JSchon | September 20, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Lets put OV in net too.

@Galvegirl

That is not only great info, but its visually pleasant. "I'm very aroused". Anchorman Quote.

Posted by: JSchon | September 21, 2008 9:20 AM | Report abuse

Actually having OV doing some penalty killing is not a really bad idea. Many top goal scorers do the PK. With more open ice he would be a major threat for short handed goals. I am not saying he needs to do first line PKing, but once or twice a game would be o.k.

At the very least do not let him serve the bench/goalie minors. We almost got burned with him in the box serving a minor and the other team getting a penalty while he was in the box, thus creating a four on four.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | September 21, 2008 9:42 AM | Report abuse

@Mike

My bad... I misread your comment. OV on the PK?

I guess I still disagree with you there too.

Posted by: JSchon | September 21, 2008 10:17 AM | Report abuse

Seems to me Sergei Fedorov played a bit of PK last season. He's got the offensive threat and a very good, no great, defensive forward. Save Ovie's engergy for regular shifts and PP

Posted by: billd | September 21, 2008 10:18 AM | Report abuse

Love the idea about Ovie on the PK - he is getting better defensively all of the time. Not only that, but he could pick up some points as well as an offensive weapon here - case in point: Gretzky and Kurri played on the PK all of the time for the Oilers dynasty. Gretzky is the all time NHL leader in shorthanded goals with 73, Kurri is 7th with 37, and by the way... Sergei Fedorov is 8th with 36! More ice time = more points... I can see it already: Ovie picks off a blueline pass or blocks the shot, goes the other way, and buries the shorty to bring the house down... Is it October yet?

Was reading about the Tampa/Pens games last nite. Gonchar got hurt, possibly a seperated shoulder. Stamkos netted the winner in the shoot-out.

Steckel's not a lock.

Posted by: C-way | September 21, 2008 11:19 AM | Report abuse

Ouch, Gonch got crunched.

That was a heck of a drop pass that Stamkos gave to Cindy.

Posted by: Steve R | September 21, 2008 11:28 AM | Report abuse

C-way,

If Steckel continues to play the way he did yesterday, he's a lock.

Posted by: Steve R | September 21, 2008 11:29 AM | Report abuse

Not anti-Steck, here.....but for whatever reason, steckel will have to play his way onto the roster.

"Gaetan was an eighth round draft choice and made the team. The epitomy of training camp is about the guys trying their [butts] off to make the team," Boudreau said. "What better guy could we have than Gaetan?"

Some years ago the team practiced at the Mount Vernon rec cntr and our kids would have swim meets next door. We would often see our heros; Gartner, Louglin, and others. I recall once seeing Gaetan Duchesne in jeans and observing that his butt seemed to begin somewhere down around the back of his knees, if you can imagine what I mean: I was sorry to hear that his heart was not as strong as his backside.
