The Ugly Side of Arbitration

I'm sure many of you have already seen the Globe and Mail's story on Shaone Morrisonn's less-than-pleasant arbitration hearing. It's an interesting read but keep in mind that most, if not all, arbitration hearings are centered on criticism of the player.

Unfortunately we weren't able to get this ourselves, what with Tarik on vacation and me juggling the WNBA beat and a few other projects at the same time.

No worries Katie. It ain't your fault.

Sucks that Mo' had to do this, hopefully he'll earn that ~$2M he's going to get. and then maybe next year he can sign for a bit longer, after he proves his value to the team.

What is this "WNBA" you speak of?

Posted by: Huh? | July 29, 2008 11:17 AM | Report abuse

Want to know, is it possible to see a transcript/report of the Arbitration hearing? Does the league release those at somepoint? I know I read one on Japers' or OFB a month or so back but do they release them all eventually, Mo's would be a good read.

He knew going in that it was going to be rough, but I'm sure that he didn't realize how rough. At least they agreed on one player to compare to, right?

Sure will be interesting to see what develops to get under the cap.

I mentioned this last week. Arbitrations would be good viewing. Interesting that the Caps identified Juice as a suitable comparison to Mo. While they are both big, and Juice has a heavier shot, Juice, um, sucks in the back end. Mo, meanwhile, is solid enough to cover lots of 2 on 1 breaks while Green does his Bobby Orr impression.

If you could make rule changes for the NHL, what changes would you make..keep in mind you have to keep the same rules that are in place now..and NO, changing the point system does not count!

My rule change would be - if you score a shorthanded goal, your player comes out of the box - minor penalty only.

I hope poor little Mo didn't get his feelings hurt too bad. I guess he has two million reasons to not feel too bad.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. Now for a counter point. I happen to watch as many games as I can, but really appreciate the articles Tarik puts out. He has access inside the locker room, I don't. He gets to talk to the coach and players, I don't. He gets to set the topic of the next blog, I don't. These are all things i'm glad he does.

Now for the other part of it. This blog allows us to comment. This becomes our responsibility. If you need to be spoon-fed your opinions and analysis, then perhaps you are in the wrong location.
As a side note, if you are looking for pure hockey news, you should check out TSN.ca.

Hey, I don't agree with 75% of what Chief posts, but I'm glad he's here for that rare insightful gem of a thought. I guess we differ in that I enjoy using my own mind to formulate opinions, and enjoy the contributions of the community. Know the site you are at, and then comment on it. I think many people are glad this isn't some news regurgitation site, but an open forum for CAPS fans to discuss topics.

Anyone who is criticizing Tarik here clearly does not have a full time job. It's the offseason, people take vacations from their job, get over it. Tarik tirelessly covers the team during the season and for much of the offseason as well. As for Katie, how about we refrain from telling others how to do their jobs here...no one's telling you how to flip burgers

Posted by: nhcaps | July 29, 2008 12:15 PM | Report abuse

I am not complaining about the blog commenting section.

I think it is a wonderful thing for the post to do.

I just don't like Tarik's coverage and this is his blog so why can't I state that opinion on here. Tarik has access to players, the locker room, leonsis, mcphee, boudreau, and basically everyone involved with caps hockey. He does nothing useful with all of this access. There is no inside story or behind the scenes look at the locker room mood or the players interactions with each other. He gets little info from the front office. His hockey analysis is mediocre at best. He does the bare minimum on almost everything. His blog posts are usually one paragraph long and look like the notes he has taken for the next day's lame article. When I need salary cap info I look in the comments section for Sombrero Guy's post because he is posting what I am looking for from Tarik.

I understand that the post offers limited PRINT coverage of the caps, but he has unlimited space to post on this blog. He simply posts a few sentences a day during the season and a few sentences a week in the summer.

Posted by: jdub | July 29, 2008 12:15 PM | Report abuse

Tarik can take all the vacations he wants right now. Just give us some better coverage when it matters.

Posted by: 68 | July 29, 2008 12:17 PM | Report abuse

@ Tommy

I'd change 3 rules if I were king.

1) Icing, when not waived off, would be an automatic whistle. The fact they can now waive it off, means that they have already decided to call it icing. Just blow the whistle and avoid the possible injuries.

2) Instigator penalty is GONE. Who are we trying to kid.. the fans LOVE the fighting. Who didn't want to see someone come up and just PUMMEL Avery during ... (pick any Avery moment here).

3) Goalie interference. This is a touchy one for me. I didn't like all the goals being disallowed if a player was in the crease (remember all those controversial goals). However, a goalie should be left alone in his crease. If he's in his crease, it's no-touch. If he's out, he's fair game. Offensive players can be in the crease, as long as they aren't touching the goalie.

I agree with your assessments, just not the no touch icing.

The game goes so much slower when its no touch. I know there is a concern about players getting hurt going to cancel icings but those instances are very few. 95% of the time the icing is called with no real race to the puck, but those races can be the difference between a chance in the last 15 seconds of the game or a defensive zone faceoff

From the previous post, JSchon, I think your numbers are skewed. You need to only count the number of days you actually post, no total days. I don't post on Fridays or sundays (I'm not sitting in front of a computer) so those days wouldn't count toward my average.

Also, I think you need to set up a countdown clock for the start of training camp. And I checked out your blog. The two Coreys are the same

Posted by: Leeguru | July 29, 2008 12:53 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and as for the comments about Mo in the hearings, he knew they were going to be harsh. It's the agents job to secure as much money as possible for his client, and it's the teams job to get the best value. The agent is going to pump up his value, the team is going to downplay his value. It's business. If Mo is upset by it, he isn't tough enough for the NHL.

Rule Changes:

1) Enforce strictly or further reduce size of goalie's equipment, i.e. pads.

2) Whenever goalie covers puck to stop play, defensive team cannot change players just like after icing. Also, goalie cannot cover puck unless in the crease.

Both 1) and 2) are designed to increase scoring w/o any goofy changes like increasing size of the goal.

3) This is a maybe, but put a five-minute, three-on-three in the overtime after the five-minute, four-on-four and before the shootout. The shootout is a lousy way to decide the winner in a team sport.

Posted by: Katie Castro | July 29, 2008 1:22 PM | Report abuse

@ Tommy

I disagree about the icing. Typically, you see icing about 5-10 times a game. With the new rule that you can't line change on icing, it makes it even less. Refs call off more then less of them now.

The key is that if they are going to call the icing, why wait the 3 - 5 seconds for the defender to skate down and touch it. That just gives the offenders longer to rest. If they decide to call it icing, just do it. That rule won't change the pace of the game. Either way, if i'm in charge to make the rule change, then I'll rule with an iron fist and make it so. =)

@ embarrased

Correction, your posts and spelling are embarrASSing.

"He does nothing useful with all of this access. There is no inside story or behind the scenes look..."

If you'll recall, it was Tarik that Kolzig called when he wanted to spill his guts to the press. Is that enough access for you? Tarik's job requires that he stay on the good side of players and management so that he continues that access. If he pisses people off, they'll all stop talking to him, period.

Posted by: tess | July 29, 2008 2:19 PM | Report abuse

@ fricknoutstandin

What happens when an offensive player gets behind the D and sets himself up to receive a long pass out of the D zone.
He misses the pass and the puck goes all the way down, instantly, its icing.

With a touch up, the D man is forced to actually play D and cover that man. If they leave him alone, he will be the first one to the puck and create that scoring chance.

giving players an extra second of 2 to rest is no big deal given the multiple TV time outs during a game.

"If you'll recall, it was Tarik that Kolzig called when he wanted to spill his guts to the press. Is that enough access for you?"

That had nothing to do with Tarik's access or ability. It has to do with the readership count and exposure. If you want to get your message out, do you go to the better writer or the one who's work is seen by more. Everything being equal, you go to the better writer, in this case Kolzig went to the writer who gets the most eyes.

I'm not usually one to rock the boat, but all of you trolls are getting on my nerves. If you don't have something pertinent to say, stay quiet and let those who do pipe up. At least Chief (who sometimes acts the troll) usually has something to add to the conversation, even if it's exactly the kinda thing that will rouse tempers. But the rest of you who are doing nothing but calling out Katie and Tarik for doing a job that you don't have, shut the hell up.

The bloggers are able to spout opinion in their posts while Tarik is required to stick to the facts.

One thing I've always noticed about Tarik is that he's typically the only reporter at pressers asking multiple questions. Oddly enough, the responses he gets are the ones regularly printed elsewhere. Why aren't these great journalists asking the questions?

People seem to forget that he's a pipeline to the team and generally gets our more sane questions answered. He consistently dishes out good info during his weekly chats and also makes himself available to fans even when having to put up with the asylum escapees around here.

New topic at 68's (and other's) request:

We're over the cap. Who would we get rid of, and who do we think Caps' management gets rid of?

I say Fehr/Fleischman to Hershey, but I think it depends on which line they respectively would play on. If Flash were slated for the 2nd line, for example, I send him down. If Fehr is slated for the 1st line, I say send him down. If they both get slated in those two spots, I say god help us.

For flash's sake I hope he spent the entire summer gaining upper body strength. He seemed to be weak on the puck last year and I have read that the team instructed him to work on his upper body.

Does anyone else think that Gordon might be on the hot seat? He is great at what he does but he doesn't have much offensive upside and steckel can easily fill his role.

Posted by: 68 | July 29, 2008 3:10 PM | Report abuse

Interesting take from Wise on Mo (pre-arbitration):

"If that were the case, the Caps could say that Morrisonn is similar to Kurt Sauer in terms of stats and such. Sauer has four goals, 26 points and 214 PIM in 288 career NHL games. Morrisonn has six goals, 45 points and 278 PIM in 278 career games. Sauer recently signed a four-year deal with Phoenix, a contract that will pay him $1.75 million for each of the next four seasons.

And if the Caps were to use Sauer as a comparable (again, they can't), the Morrisonn side might like to use Pittsburgh's Brooks Orpik to bolster their own case. Orpik was chosen 18th overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft; Morrisonn was chosen 19th overall in 2001. Orpik has four goals, 36 points and 392 PIM in 297 career NHL contests. Orpik recently re-signed with the Penguins for six years. His deal will pay him $3.75 million per season.

There is a huge difference between what Sauer and Orpik got on the open market this month. On the very surface, neither player seems terribly different from Morrisonn, either."

I would not miss Flash ... I think he is over-rated.

Posted by: Boo! | July 29, 2008 3:11 PM | Report abuse

It has to be flash and gordon. I would say Jurcina but we may need to keep Alzner in Hershey to stay under the cap. If that is the case Jurcina stays and we move a forward or two if possible.

Also, there is probably a decent chance that Clark will start the season on LTIR. If that happens I think we don't have to make a move until he is ready to come back.

Posted by: DC FURY | July 29, 2008 3:18 PM | Report abuse

If clark is healthy, I would try to trade Kozlov and give the young guys another year to improve.

Posted by: jdub | July 29, 2008 3:19 PM | Report abuse

I think Gordon is too valuable a special teams player to lose. Not only was he the best faceoff taker (fact check, anyone?), but he was our best penalty killer (not based on stats, just personal observation).

Flash, though, does need a break-out season, unless he wants to relegate himself to 4th line duties permanently, and even then, i'm not sure I'd pick him over Gordon/Steckel, Brash, or Bradley.

Posted by: Leeguru | July 29, 2008 3:27 PM | Report abuse

MO should be happy with his outcome, no way he deserved a penny more.

Money aside, I know the Caps NEVER attempted to to negotiate with class.

Over the salary cap and nowhere close to being better than last season, basically nowhere closer to the Cup. What a joke.

RE: Tarik,

All I can say is look at Dave Fay. Poor guy only decided to "go against the grain" at the end of his time.
Tarik knows he's not going to report on the Caps forever, so he might as well create an identity by doing some REAL journalism, other than being a FOLLOWER, because that's a waste of his time and ours.
Then again, why rock the boat, rock the red.
Oh, and keep on believing.

Posted by: Chief | July 29, 2008 3:27 PM | Report abuse

I'm going to go ahead and say that next season's Flash will be dramatically improved. However, should he not, then any player that still has a pulse will be a fair trade. I feel like Juice will be better too, but then again, the odds of it getting worse are awful. Camp competition should be pretty fierce.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 29, 2008 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Yikes, there needs to be registration to comment, this thread is ugly, vitriolic, and only 10% relating to hockey.

I think Fehr/Flash whichever is easier to start in Hershey will, along with Alzner unless he really, really shines at camp, Erskine is only what 500k so despite his skating he can play solid enough for that price.

Posted by: 8b4Ovie | July 29, 2008 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Actually, in contrast to Chief, I think that ShaMo was overpaid by about 400k. He is a good partner to Mike Green, which is why he deserved any pay raise at all, but when he wasn't with Green, he was simply ineffective. about 2 mil for a half-effective or conditionally-effective player is way too much.

Unless that condition has him scoring 15 more goals than he did.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 29, 2008 3:34 PM | Report abuse

Mike Vogel and others continue to say that a trade will occur. I haven't heard any rumors yet but has anyone else heard anything?

Also, what would you try to accomplish or do you think the caps will try to accomplish if they pursue a trade?

Do you think they will try to move someone like kozlov and fehr in a package for a dman or just trade a guy like flash to shed payroll?

I don't think Kozlov moves at all. After this season, either Fehr, healed-Clark, Bouchard, or Osala, even, steps up to take his place. Maybe even Semin.

Ovie has good chemistry with pass-first, ridiculous stickhandling Kozlov, and I think they'll keep that where it is.

I think they give Fehr this entire season to see what he can do.

Frankly, I don't think this team will change any. At most, I say Erskine/Fehr is in Hershey to relieve the cap. I think Alzner stays up to gain experience, too. He'll be here all season, probably.

Posted by: Wanax | July 29, 2008 3:55 PM | Report abuse

Financially speaking, Chief, I agree with you -- we are spending a hell of a lot more than we were this time last year.

This time last year, however, most of our team had no playoff experience, we didn't have 3 1st line centers at our disposal, and we had one of the, if not the, oldest goaltenders in the league.

I'm satisfied with what we have, really.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 29, 2008 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Lee,

By my math, we're 956,101 over the cap with Pots being on LTIR to start the season, and with Alzner in the bigs.

Clark makes 2,633,333. If he's LTIR until Christmas, no issues with the cap. Or a combo of LTIR, and Flash/Alzner starting in Hershey. Lotso combos to number crunch, but it'll come down to who has a monster camp (imho).

Sombrero, what do your numbers look like?

Chief...

That's a different argument... But I'll play along...

I forgot that Huet was the 2nd coming of Terry Sawchuk... We should have caved into his demand after his original demand. Then you really could complain about the salary cap thing... I would've too... But we made the right decision based on finances...

If you'd take a look at the salary cap, you'd see our number next year will be $44.5M... and we have bunch of young talent to fill some of those holes and money to pick up a FA or two and re-sing Steckel and Schultz.

once again, chief nailed it. who wants a team with another year of experience (including a playoff sniff), a younger goalie (with MVP on his resume), and a coach who can actually coach. they were better off last year with less experience, an old goalie and a stiff of a coach. another spot on analysis from the chief.

and you were right to laugh about signing clark. zero leadership skills and couldnt score 30 goals even if he was on a line with the best player in the world.

To the imbecile that noted Clark scoring 30, I'd take Gary Rissling or Dave Semenko over Clark anyday, essentially we are talking about meat heads on a line with gifted players.

Captain Clark SUCKS and is WEAK, he's a loser, just like "cup winner" Clymer, a bonafied loser.

Yes, BB is huge, however the real challenge will be getting these guys to play now that their all paid, good luck.

I didnt need Tarik or Katie or anyone in here to tell what an arbitration hearing is like.

NO

Posted by: JSchon | July 29, 2008 4:53 PM | Report abuse

Cap fans must be only people to reward mistakes with praise.

It must be the Gov influence, because you people can justify anything.

If other teams are over the cap, everyone laughs at them, now Caps are over and it's "no big deal"

Posted by: Chief | July 29, 2008 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Over the Cap with long bad contracts = bad

we are not in that situation

Posted by: JSchon | July 29, 2008 5:03 PM | Report abuse

Do I care? Nope. I enjoyed the story, but I'm not bothered that the WaPo wasn't lined up on the corner awaiting "breaking news" of an arbitration hearing. I've worked in a newsroom for nearly six years ... every stubbed toe and mundane detail isn't going to be reported.

We get much more info from Tarik on this blog site than readers of the WaPo get in their daily paper.

i come to this blog every day to get my 'caps' fix - even if it is just a bunch of yahoo's spouting whatever is on their minds.

@mclovin
yes it would be nice to have someone that appears to be passionate about reporting on hockey - but D.C. isn't the nations capital of Canada yet - so i guess for now we get what we get.

@drinkingpartner
not a new topic but a new view - caps salary cap.
i think everyone is missing something very important. the problems are not just feds, nylander, koz, mo, green, clark etc. the caps put themselves in this position for the next five or six years by giving OV 9.5+ right now. i think they could have structured it to escalate (6.5, 7, 7.75, 8.75, 9.5+ etc) as the cap room increased (assuming it does) over the years. i'm happy he's locked up for so long - but i fear that the next young player we have that has a 'green' type year will have to look outside of the caps for the money (unless the pens have space when crysby goes on LTIR with vision problems from the tears).

The shining part of the day for me has been Chief finally admitting he's not a Caps fan.

Posted by: keef | July 29, 2008 5:10 PM | Report abuse

chief, who was the player? nobody knows who you are so it should be no problem to name him.

you really are showing your ignorance moreso than normal. gary rissling couldnt score 30 goals if you spotted him 30 goals. and semenko's job description didn't include the word "goal".

and weak and chris clark don't belong in the same sentence. broken palate and all.

Posted by: Fidel | July 29, 2008 5:15 PM | Report abuse

Clark should give up the C publicly, because NO Captain is worth having if he can't fight/play.

He's weak, just like Pothier.

No offense, but genetics and survival of the fittest play a huge role in this sport.

These guys need to quit the game instead of milking it.

Can we switch back to the Salary Cap? I'm not seeing a clear path to us being under the cap. We're about 4 over. If Pothier is gone, that takes us to 1.5 over, so who do we dump? Maybe Erskine or Alzner goes to the Famr and thats .5- .8 off. If Clark starts on IR then we're good, but when he comes back, we have to ditch 3-4 guys to cover the cap. There's a rumor floating that Nylander is trade bait, but I think that's a little suspect. Its not like a guy who was hurt all last year and gets 4M a year is in high demand.

With regards to all the non-regulars (yes, even Chief is a regular) here this week: "Who are these guys" -Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid

Guys, let's focus on hockey or constructive comments about the sports page. Its not perfect, but I've found that comments I have left about the dead tree edition have been fixed, but that assumes there is intelligent commentary about the coverage.

2funny. One pylon in a Caps sweater gets mentioned in a Canadian filler article ("Arbitration can be testy!", by Breathless Mahoney) and some doofi want to treat it as a scoop? If that story matters worth a damn, this IS the hockey capital of the universe.
Over the cap by $1M, in July, is not exactly the red phone at 3am.
And 1/2 the players on every team that's not the Red Wings will gladly, and accurately, give the ultimate insider (Chief) this inane and generic quote: We need help.

Sorry all. I took off this afternoon to catch an Oriole's/Yankees game in the bronx. Wanted to see yankee stadium before it got torn down. Still wired from the caffeine on the drive home and it took a while to sift through the crap posts made by the same person under like 12 names.

"By my math, we're 956,101 over the cap with Pots being on LTIR to start the season, and with Alzner in the bigs.

Clark makes 2,633,333. If he's LTIR until Christmas, no issues with the cap. Or a combo of LTIR, and Flash/Alzner starting in Hershey. Lotso combos to number crunch, but it'll come down to who has a monster camp (imho).

Sombrero, what do your numbers look like?"

My numbers look exactly like yours, but I think its a leap to assume that Clark would be out until Christmas at this point. I know last we heard was it was that Clark was getting close but his recovery had hit a bit of a wall. Camp is still over a month away....

As for sending Erskine down, I bet he would get claimed by someone on waivers. I think the only waiver exempt guys we have are Backstrom, Schultz, Fehr and Alzner. MAYBE Flash, but I don't know for sure.

I'm not going to speculate on who gets moved/demoted etc until we see something in training camp. A lot of the potential solutions to the salary cap problems are young guys so its hard to predict who will have improved, who will have regressed, and who will have been lazy in the offseason.

"Correct me if I am wrong Sombrero but doesn't matter how you play with the numbers, its the average of the entire contract divided by the amount of years.

Posted by: #94 | July 29, 2008 5:27 PM "

Correct. A theoretical 3 year contract paying 2, 4, then 6 million would have a cap hit of 4 million (2+4+6=12 and 12/3=4)

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 30, 2008 3:36 AM | Report abuse

that's also why some teams have tacked on an extra year on an aging players salary at a fraction of the early years to get the cap number down. Lecavalier's contract is a good example of that. 10 million per year for the first 7, then 8.5, 4, 1.5, 1. Once the contract kicks in during the 09/10 season, his cap hit as long as he stays with TBL is 7.72 (85 million/11).

If Vinny gets traded with 3 years remaining on his deal, his cap hit to the team acquiring him is only 2.1 (4+1.5+1)/3.

So adding those cheap years at the end of a contract make a player more tradeable, while saving some money in the Cap hit over the life of the contract.

In Vinny's case, I think it has more to do with the Cap his. He'll be 40 at the end of his contract extension, so chances are decent he will retire before it gets to that point.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 30, 2008 3:47 AM | Report abuse

think gordon is an nhl player and flash is not.

fehr was not productive but he does not make his line worse (and flash does).

Posted by: jim* | July 30, 2008 4:21 AM | Report abuse

I dont think you can get rid of Gordon. He is great on faceoffs and P/K. Perfect for 4th line.

Posted by: Tim | July 30, 2008 7:02 AM | Report abuse

Boo,
I watched the top 10 bloopers video. Obviously saw the Stefan thing when it happened but its still amazing to see. The worst thing is that he actually passes the puck to a EDM player as he falls over. Had he landed on the puck and slide into the corner with it, there is no way the Oilers score. He'll never be allowed to forget that one.
BTW - working on that travel guide!

Tommmy, think it was you who asked about the rule changes but there is so much crap on here it's hard to look back and see.

I'd get rid of penalty shots. 5 mins 4-4 overtime and if no one scores then a tie is a tie, 1 point each.

Registration for this blog can't come quickly enough if the rubbish from today is an indication of the future. Seriously, if it carried on like this, I'd stop reading.

Dave:
Thanks, Dave (I am going to have to start calling you Rick Steves!)! :-) RE: OT "penalty" shots, you sound like another soccer fan that I know!! ;-) I actually don't mind them during the regular season (the ones that drag on and on are kind of exciting!), but do think that the points should change (3 for a win during regulation play, 2 for a win in OT and 1 for a loss in OT). Regardess, I am glad that they play sudden death during the playoffs.

Posted by: Boo! | July 30, 2008 7:31 AM | Report abuse

I like the shootout. Seems like I am a minority on that matter. I would change the points to 2 points for a win, 1 point for a shootout win and 0 points for a loss. Win in overtime would be 2 points. Also, I would get rid of the instigator penalty. Fighting has been a part of Hockey since the beginning. Thats why there are guys like Brash.

I'm firmly in the no-touch icing camp. After watching what the Wild player went through and still is going through, I'd hate it to happen to anyone, let alone one of our guys.
Boo!, I'd seen the bloopers video before, but I don't have sound on the computer I'm using. I'll watch the goalie video when I get home next week.
As far as waivers go, somebody pointed out Vogel said Fehr would have to go through waivers this year since he was starting his 2nd NHL contract. Schultz is exempt through half the season, Backstrom until sometime in February, I think. If someone knows what year Flash signed his first contract, I could figure his status out.

nhlscap.com used to have waiver status for all the players before they switched over to hockeybuzz. Now I cant seem to find it on there.

Glad to see some hockey discussion again. I dont post too often, but I do read the blog regularly. If you want more hockey coverage, that hardly seems the way to go about getting it.

I will be interested to see how the cap works itself out, but whomever posted about seeing how camp goes may be right. There could be some suprises, plus if Clark is not ready now, it seems unlikely he will be be back in Sept.

Thanks for the blooper link -- much better than yesterday's trollathon

As for the Cap's cap -- sending down Flash, Erksine, or Fehr will not save the c. 1 mil the Caps are over the Cap as none of them make 1 mil and presumably someone would have to come up (which means that player's salary would count against the cap.

It seems like Alzner may have to held down and/or Clark on LTIR. Bummer. The trade deadline may prove interesting.

Also, isn't Erskine on a 2-way contract? Doesn't that mean that he does NOT have to pass through waivers if he goes to Hershey?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 30, 2008 9:36 AM | Report abuse

Even if Erskine has a two way contract, he only makes $500k so that wouldn't help the cap situation too much.

DrinkingPartner, from what I've read, a 2-way contract doesn't really affect waiver status. I'll refresh my memory and get back to you unless somebody else knows.

I'm thinking Erskine has to go through waivers, but would not be subject to re-entry waivers when the Caps recall him. I think the 1-way/2-way contract determines re-entry waivers, not waivers. As Tim said, his cap hit is only 537,500. If we're over by 956,101 with Pothier on LTIR, then we'd still have to lose 418,601.
Could you put Clark on LTIR for, say, 15 games and save his salary, which would work out to an exemption of 481,707 over the cap? Or is there a minimum game requirement for LTIR? Or does LTIR not work like that?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 30, 2008 10:04 AM | Report abuse

I thought the whole point of the 1-way/2-way distinction WAS about waiver status, with 1-way meaning that you could only go up to the NHL w/o waivers, and 2-way meaning that you could come and go as you(r team) pleased.

Or do I misunderstand?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 30, 2008 10:06 AM | Report abuse

I thought the 2 way contract was just a way to save money during the time period that player was not on the NHL roster. I don't know that for a fact, though.

Posted by: gustafsson | July 30, 2008 10:07 AM | Report abuse

a 2 way contract just means they have 2 different pay scales, one for NHL and one for AHL.

Posted by: Sombreo Guy | July 30, 2008 10:08 AM | Report abuse

So why do some players have to pass through waivers while others don't?

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 30, 2008 10:10 AM | Report abuse

I can't see them sending Erskine down, despite what we think he's got NHL experience and is only 500k, compared to the untested Alzner who's what 3x that much? (I can't remember exactly and it's not worth scrolling back up through the trolls) If Flash can clear I'd rather send him down and keep Gordo up at least we know what we get from him. I don't know how LTIR works but if Clark is ready to come back in late Oct or Nov will they allow him to be on it for a short amount of time, it is "Long Term."

Correct me if I'm wrong but with Alzner in Choco-Town aren't we under the cap? Based on comments from I think GMGM aren't they not carrying as many D-men this year, he seems like the logical choice, at least at the start.

Posted by: 8b4Ovie | July 30, 2008 10:12 AM | Report abuse

It depends on how old they were when they signed their first NHL contract. Younger players get more years/games in the NHL before the have to go through waivers. While a player older than 25 when he signs gets one season regardless of how many games he plays in the NHL that season. Goalies also get an additional season if they signed before they are considered 23 by the league.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 30, 2008 10:14 AM | Report abuse

I think you're right 8b4Ovie. If Alzner starts the year in Hershey and Pothier's hit is subtracted, then we are under the cap and there are no problems.

Posted by: Tim | July 30, 2008 10:15 AM | Report abuse

"There are a number of different contracts that a player could sign. The best is an NHL "1-way" which guarantees the negotiated NHL rate of pay regardless of whether the player is sent down.

A good hockey agent, particularly one with legal experience, can help to make sure you get the best contract The more common contract for players who are signing their first contract is the NHL 2-way, which means you have one level of salary for when you play in the NHL and another lower salary when you play in the Minors.

There is also a NHL 3-way contract, which pays you a NHL, AHL and ECHL salary depending on what level you are playing.

The 2-way contract means you make the same amount whether you are at the AHL or ECHL level. There are also AHL 2-way contracts, which means you have an AHL high end and an ECHL bottom end to the contract. Lastly there is the ECHL contract. All of these contracts discussed are all guaranteed, except for the ECHL contract, where you can be waived at any time with only one week of severance pay"

The Caps may have to trade someone for a pick or a prospect. Kozlov and Nylander both fit the salary requirement, but the Caps would miss either one, epsecially with Clark ailing and no established as a 1st line RW and the dropoff from Nylander to Gordo and Stecks is really significant. Also Feds may be a one year deal, so who fills in as the 2nd line center the year after next if Nylander is gone? Laich may work out as either the 1st line RW or the 3rd line center, but having Laich as the 3rd LW with either Nyls or Feds with Fehr or Flash as the RW makes for a really solid 3rd line.

Posted by: JIM | July 30, 2008 10:19 AM | Report abuse

As we stand right now, if Alzner starts in Hershey we will indeed be under the Cap. We would have $718,899 left under the Cap if we started with Alzner in Hershey and only carried 6 d-men to start.

Lepisto could be brought up as needed, or if he started on the roster we would be under the cap by $18,899 due to Lepisto's $700,000 cap hit

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 30, 2008 10:21 AM | Report abuse

Sombrero's right. Instead of "2-way" as in a 2-way street, its more like they have 2-ways to pay them. (AHL or NHL salary) Ovie has a 1-way contract. So, if the entire league is asleep and he passed waivers, the Caps still have to pay him his 9 million. But with Erskine, they pay him his 537,000 a year in DC, but it drops to less than 100,000 if he made it down to Hershey.
The best explanation I can give for waivers I actually found on a tutorial for NHL 2K8, I think. Its basically in place to protect teams from losing young talent. If needed, we could send Backs down without a problem, while sending Poti down would trip the waivers switch. The same sort of idea as RFA vs UFA.

Everyone hates the shootout because (in part) it takes a team game and reduces it to a gimmick of individuals.

While a penalty shot is exciting, the shootout tries to artificially create that excitement.

Well, learn something everyday.

I'm still betting Alzner stays up and Erskine/Jurcina goes down -- probably Erskine before Jurcina, but I don't know.

Though it could be Flash/Fehr, too, going down.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 30, 2008 10:45 AM | Report abuse

I would think an attempt to trade would happen before they take the chance to lose somebody like Erskine or Juice on waivers.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 30, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

I like the shootout too. It gives a game a sense of closure. I can see tweaking the point system (3 for reg/OT win, 2 for so win, 1 for so/OT loss).

I agree with SG -- I would not like to loose Nyls. Three scoring lines will be awesome.

I think Alzner spending some time in Hershey will be the most likely outcome and Clark on LTIR is also a possibility for getting under the cap.

I think Flash deserves a chance this year. BB raves about his abilities in the AHL, so I trust his judgment. Plus, the kid is pretty cheap. I want to see him play tougher and backcheck better.

Posted by: JIM | July 30, 2008 10:48 AM | Report abuse

I see where you're coming from Gus. I wasn't a big fan of the shootout when they first started it, but it has grown on me. I still prefer a shootout over a tie. Maybe they should extend overtime to 10 minutes or even 20.

Posted by: Tim | July 30, 2008 10:50 AM | Report abuse

@Drinking Partner,

But having Erskine/Jurcina go down still leaves us over the salary cap, and unless Alzner really shines during the camp, and to a certain extent even if he does, he's still never played an NHL (or AHL) game. While I feel a forward will probably get moved somewhere to make room for him shortly at this time I think Alzner starts in Hershey.

Posted by: 8b4Ovie | July 30, 2008 10:53 AM | Report abuse

If Alzner really impresses in camp, rather than try to pass Jurcina or Erskine through waivers I would bet we trade them for something, even if it ends up only being a 3rd round pick. If we try to send them down, we risk losing them for nothing if they get plucked off waivers

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 30, 2008 10:56 AM | Report abuse

People, why are we still talking about trading player and being over cap. I think Sombrero and a couple other people have made it obvious that there are several ways that the caps can dip under the cap. ie. Clark on IR at the begin of the season, Alzner starting in the A.

I think we need to calm down and realize that we are in a great position..

It feels good to be talking about hockey again.

Posted by: #94 | July 30, 2008 10:59 AM | Report abuse

#94,
True enough. I guess its fun to come up with possible plans B-Z. But isn't there somebody you'd trade if you could? That way if Clark dramatically improves and Alzner starts the season here, they've got another option.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | July 30, 2008 11:03 AM | Report abuse

As much as I hate the idea of getting a point for an overtime loss, you have to admit that overtime hockey is a lot more fun now, than under the old dump and not really chase style where both teams played for a tie.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 30, 2008 11:03 AM | Report abuse

Realistically, I think BB will stick to his word and keep 13 forwards and 7 D with 8-19-25, 28-91-21, 43-92-14, 87-15-10 w/ Steckel on reserve, assuming Clark is still injured, and 52-26, 3-55, 4-23, and Alzner at 7, assuming Pothier is still injured.

I don't think it'll be too much of an issue to keep Alzner up with the Caps, unless he clearly doesn't belong there, in which case I think Lepisto comes back up.

But, according to that, we're still over the cap with less than the max roster. I'm guessing a Jurcina trade for a 4th round pick and a pretzel w/o mustard.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 30, 2008 11:03 AM | Report abuse

Does anyone know how LTIR works or know of a website with an explanation? It seems that if Clark were to be able to come back in 1, 2 or even 3 months that wouldn't qualify, unless they consider the time he's already been injured, otherwise, even though we weren't in cap trouble at the time, why wouldn't we have put him and Nylander on it last season when we knew they weren't coming back. I just want to make sure if we're talking about Clark starting on LTIR, he'd actually be a candidate for it, I doubt it's something you can just hop on and off of very easily.

Me I'd much rather see him in the lineup.

Posted by: 8b4Ovie | July 30, 2008 11:05 AM | Report abuse

I don't see the need for "closure" in a game. What's wrong with a tie.

How about OT starts with the home team on a two minute PP. If they don't score, the away team then gets a 2 min PP. If they don't score the home team gets a 5-3 for 2 mins. No goals? Back to the away team for their 5-3.

Rubbish idea?

Sombrero,
I personally dont see the problem with a point for an OT loss. I think it should be looked at as a point gained for holding your opponent to a tie after regulation and thats whats being rewarded not the OT loss that follows.

Imagine going to Detriot and holding them for 60 mins. That achievement surely has merit and has to be rewarded. If you were to play your hearts out for 60 then lose in a shootout, and go home with nothing, thats unfair.

8b4Ovie,
I asked a similar question re LTIR recently. Does the league send their own medical team to verify the injury (or are medical reports submitted to the league). If not teams could move players on and off it to avoid cap problems.
No one answered my question btw! :(

Posted by: Dave UK Caps Fan | July 30, 2008 11:13 AM | Report abuse

A player is eligible for LTIR if he will miss 24 calendar days and ten NHL games.

Posted by: wanax | July 30, 2008 11:14 AM | Report abuse

I think it comes down to Pothier. If he can't play, that 2.5M covers just about the entire salary cap overage.

If Clark isn't ready, that's 32K / game under the cap.

Start the season with Clark and POthier on LTIR, we are under the cap by about 2M (bringing Schultz or Lepisto up). After 6-9 games, if Clark is ready, we move Gorodon, Steckly, or Bradly down and can put Clark back in the lineup.

OR

Start with Potier on LTIR, keep Alzer in the minors and bring up Lepisto and Schultz (puts is 19K under the cap). With one of the forwards going down, and the cap difference, then can bring Alzner up after October.

Posted by: fricknoutstandin | July 30, 2008 11:23 AM | Report abuse

One hockey way to resolve a tie would be to keep reducing--evenly--the manpower on the ice. 5 minutes with no goals in 4 on 4 can be pretty exciting. 5 minutes with no goals in 3 on 3 won't happen much--and watching millionaires play pond hockey would be a blast.

Posted by: redlineblue | July 30, 2008 11:25 AM | Report abuse

@frickinoutstandin

the Caps are $956,101 over the cap even after factoring out Pothier's salary.

It's really not that big a deal, I am sure it'll get worked out and all questions will be answered during camp.

Posted by: Sombrero Guy | July 30, 2008 11:29 AM | Report abuse

I would personally love to see a 4-point system come into play: 3 points for an outright win, 3 points for an OT win (1 to the other team), and 2 points for a Shoot-Out win (1 to the other team).

It's dirty and not well thought out, but it would place an emphasis on winning in regulation, and you'd see who the best teams actually were because they'd (assumedly) have far superior point totals due to wins in regulation.

Thoughts?

If you did that, it might work well with 4 pts for a regulation win, 0 for regulation loss. 3 pts for an OT win, 1 pt for OT loss. Then 2-1 for shootout. Although it would work pretty well with 3-0, 2-1. It places a bigger emphasis on winning and less on just getting to OT. It also works mathematically in that it eliminates the situation that happened last year when you had teams making it into the playoffs by consistently going to OT. Can't remember the team(s) off the top of my head, but there was at least one that seemed to lose more games in OT in the last two months of the season than they won outright in regulation, but are still getting pretty good points out of it. The difference between pts in winning outright and losing in OT needs to be higher than it is now.

New thread

Posted by: Woo hoo! | July 30, 2008 12:07 PM | Report abuse

i believe the concept of getting 1 point for a regulation tie, even if you lose in OT, was to encourage teams to try and win in OT vs. just playing in a shell for 5 minutes trying not to lose. i think that concept predates the 4 on 4 OT concept, which was implemented for the same reason, to open up the ice and increase scoring.

i think keeping the 4 on 4 but no point for an OT loss is the way to go. you do get a point if you lose in the shootout, though.

another option is to not have OT be sudden death, like in soccer. you play 5 minutes and the team that scores the most goals wins.

Posted by: Cap Fan 1 | July 30, 2008 12:10 PM | Report abuse

I don't like OT points, either, but I know that that's probably not going to change back to the way it used to be.

Another change I'd make is counting the game winning shoot-out goal. So, Ovechkin would have had a 56 or so goal rookie year, when you add the shoot-out GWGs he had.

And it should count against the goalies, like Olie against the Red Wings last year.

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | July 30, 2008 12:10 PM | Report abuse

Real hockey fans will always be hockey fans even if you do some whacky scoring system, the issue is the rest of the population that has understand the that there is a point rewarded to the loser in OT. Its hard to understand.

Posted by: JSchon | July 30, 2008 12:22 PM | Report abuse

I don't like any idea that results in some games awarding more total points than other games, including the current system which awards two total points for a 60 minute game and three total points for an OT or SO game. So I would go for a three point regulation win which makes all games worth three points.

I believe the reason behind OT points was that the NHL played so many years without regular season OT games, so a team was used to receiving a point for a tie after 60 minutes. When the NHL instituted OT, no team wanted to "give up" the point they had earned for a tie in regulation.

I would not count shootout goals toward personal goal totals, although they could add a separate stat for shootout goals. They can also add a shootout stat for goalies but not as part of normal save percentage. My reasoning in both cases is that the NHL shootout is a contrived one-on-one gimmick in a team game.

Posted by: Joe B | July 30, 2008 12:38 PM | Report abuse

i think any system that rewards for reg win over ot/so is the way to go. if they insist on giving away pts for losing in ot/so then a reg win needs to be worth 3 pts and an ot win is worth 2. teams that really want to win will go for a reg/ot win. a so win gets you only 1 pt while a loss gets you 0. that way you should never see a team just sitting back waiting for their 1 pt
