Third Period

1-4 Florida, Dvorak from Campbell and Peltonen.

*Unfortunately I didn't have a good look at that goal and our replay was from behind the net. But Radek Dvorak had a wide open shot to Jose Theodore's right and Theodore appeared to be falling down in the opposite direction as Dvorak's shot sailed in above him.

*Alex Ovechkin is throwing his weight around this period. First he sent Dvorak into the boards in the Panthers zone during Washington's power play, then on his most recent shift he knocked Kamil Kreps off the puck as he skated into the Capitals zone.

2-4, Capitals goal by Kozlov from Backstrom and Kozlov at 16:11.

*Nicklas Backstrom made a nice drop pass to as he skated into the Panthers' zone which Viktor Kozlov shot past Anderson from the center of the faceoff circle to the goaltender's left. It was a nifty wrister and a clean goal that didn't deflect off anyone.

3-4 Capitals PPG scored by Fleischmann from Ovechkin and Backstrom at 17:02.

*Ovechkin fired a booming slap shot and the rebound bounced off a body in front of the net (I think off Kozlov) then found it's way to Tomas Fleischmann who was waiting and open on the backdoor of the net who one timed the puck past Anderson, who got a piece of the puck with his glove.

Game, set, match. Nice game against the pathetic Panthers.

I can't rule out a comeback till there's 0:00 on the clock. These guys have done it before.

Posted by: chuckatcws | December 2, 2008 9:04 PM | Report abuse

At least the Caps are outshooting the Panthers this period

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | December 2, 2008 9:05 PM | Report abuse

no goaltending, no defense, bad decisions, and no leadership. I guess now that we finally lost at home, the just-created Cap fans will see the importance of winning road games, and the glaring mistakes this team is making. Time is running out and do not be suprised if we do not make the playoffs.

Posted by: ergoroc | December 2, 2008 9:06 PM | Report abuse

lol... its one game... half our team is injured... calm down..

Posted by: sexypills03 | December 2, 2008 9:08 PM | Report abuse

its not just 1 game. the inconsistent play is getting worse as the season gets deeper. and noone is returning anytime soon. theodore is a bust. he is good for 3 a game. he came tothe play against Montreal. That tells me he is finished, he can't get it up anymore. Put back in johnson or is he hurt also? its slipping away people. this could be a really bad month if we dont watch out

KOZLOV!

Just got back to the radio - Yea! Go CAPS!

Posted by: vkova10 | December 2, 2008 9:14 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have an uncanny ability to play to their opponent's skill level. They tend to play weak against weak teams and strong against strong teams.

and its on!!

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 2, 2008 9:14 PM | Report abuse

The only thing I don't like hearing listening on the radio is the fact that we have no energy and we have to come back, again. Coming back wears on a team over a season. I just don't like how long everyone has been out. Thank goodness Kozlov just scored. Let's Go Caps!!!

Posted by: caps28fan | December 2, 2008 9:14 PM | Report abuse

Noone is overrated, how many games has he even played this season?

Good thing that Bruce has said we might be getting one back on Thursday and another over the weekend - with Noone a scratch, we're going to need all the help we can get.

Posted by: KurtNYC | December 2, 2008 9:14 PM | Report abuse

I think we have as fans should be impressed with what this team has done with poor defense, poor goaltending, injuries, and some lack luster production at times from the teams marquee players..

That being said Andersson is hot and Theodore is obviously not

3 more goals to go!

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 9:16 PM | Report abuse

Just got back from work. I hate not being able to watch the game. Hard to really see what, if anything, is precisely wrong.

Not sure if anyone saw this, but Sean Avery has been suspended by the league for calling Phaneuf's GF (Avery's ex) "sloppy seconds".

Woooooo!! Come on Caps!

LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Posted by: mauree | December 2, 2008 9:19 PM | Report abuse

ok, I have to do it...Ergo- the caps have won 5 road games. No this is not gonna set the world on fire, but it is a far cry from the "can't win on the road" mantra that seems all consuming to you.

No, the Caps will not win every game at home. Nor will they lose every game on the road from here on out. That will ballance out the ability to collect points, and moving forward, sets things up nicely for the future run.

Since November 19th, the team has played .500 hockey with 7 guys out. What are we going to do when all the injured players return? If you have to deal with injuries, wouldn't you rather do it now rather than in July?

lastly, the team has played, what, 26 games? 56 more to go? I dont think we need to be so gloom and doom yet. It's a long season.

Anyways, it just shows you, don't give up on this team. They have the ability to comeback at any point of the game. That said, I'll take the lost. Hey, one lost at home. Still not bad. The season is long.

Posted by: TheSkyIsntFalling | December 2, 2008 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Wow - almost. Still - the Caps got the first goal and then the bounces went Florida's way tonight. Caps came on late and almost tied it. Tremendous run at home by staying unbeaten for so long. Time for the team to rebound and continue to heal for the injured guys.

Love some of the gloom and doom comments tonight - I'm curious as to how long some of the folks who sound like they're pressing the panic button have followed hockey. Take a chill pill people. It's a long season. Tonight's game theme - "s**t happens." Pardon the expression. If you're offended - get over it. Bring on the Isles.

Ice Breakers Goal Shakers

Posted by: Jonathan6 | December 2, 2008 9:30 PM | Report abuse

if this shows anything, its that all the folks that keep trashing the character and the heart of the players, should slow down a little. almost no lead is safe and these boys will give you the full 60 mins. every night.

cant win them all and i figure that 2 goals were flukes. take those out of the mix, and the we are looking at a marginal effort. marginal isn't gonna cut the mustard long term, but with the state of the team the way it is, i'll take it. our bears are growing and will be better for it in the long run.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 2, 2008 9:30 PM | Report abuse

the start playing too late. how many time have we seen this? at least 3 games where we play too late. this team has the scoring to win a stanley cup, it needs the defense. offensively, we are in the top 5. our defense is absolutely killing us. theodore is terrible. he has been all year. the is no leadership on the blue line. none.

Posted by: ergoroc | December 2, 2008 9:32 PM | Report abuse

milking injuries? Semin was off to a career year...even if he was only motivated by money, it would behoove him to pour on the points for a bigger pay day down the road. Your theory, that he's "resting for the playoffs" is a claim usually levied in March from bloggers in more hockey savvy markets...I don't buy it

Posted by: Bengt-Ake | December 2, 2008 9:32 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, that 2.48 GAA and 917 SV % to go with a 4-1-1 over his last 7, totally unwarranted.

You FREDs really need to stop pulling the rip cord, you know?

Posted by: Section117 | December 2, 2008 9:35 PM | Report abuse

I'm gonna blame this one on bad bounces. REALLY bad bounces. Two goals off our guys for them? If those hadn't gone in, we'd have had this game sewn up.

When are they gonna fix the ice at the phone booth?

Posted by: irockthered | December 2, 2008 9:40 PM | Report abuse

@lamplighter1, Jonathan6

Allow me to disagree. First of all it's not a "panic" button... but it's really stressful to see such a talented team waste games away... as it happened tonight and in a few games already.

The attitude problem is there. Tonight it's just a game... but Columbus was just a game too... King another game... Wild another game... all games that we could have won if we had a different attitude. You can't tell me that tonight we lost because of bounces. Not when we had ONE shot on goal in the third period until 10 minutes left.

Tampa and Philly tied at 3 in OT.

Posted by: tess2201 | December 2, 2008 9:45 PM | Report abuse

IMO, Theodore is not at fault.

The team in front didn't have their best game, to say the least. And just very bad breaks in that second period.

Posted by: elicea | December 2, 2008 9:45 PM | Report abuse

sick pass there for the flyers win.. 4-3 in OT..

I can't decide whether or not I like the Flyers' orange retro jerseys...

Posted by: tess2201 | December 2, 2008 9:50 PM | Report abuse

For being Flyers jerseys, they're not bad.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | December 2, 2008 9:53 PM | Report abuse

Tess: I can decide & I don't even need to see it -- if its flyers, I don't like it.

Uncatim:
Yea, I know, it's the Flyers and I should hate anything associated with them, but like jmu said, it's not a bad-looking jersey. Not nearly as gross as those Pittsburgh baby blues.

Posted by: tess2201 | December 2, 2008 10:05 PM | Report abuse

Just got home from the "game" Hard to win when you score two goals on yourself.

Mo, I have lost my patience with you. Steckel, for pete's sake. Poor Alzner is having a bad night and you have to bank a goal off of him into the net. Sheesh, the kid can't catch a break.

Team just seemed flat. I am tired of hearing the "we need to work harder" speech. We are far enough into the season for the team to get it. Injuries or not, I want to see more attitude from non-injured players not wearing #8, #19, and #10, #15, and #21.

Posted by: Kim-3 | December 2, 2008 10:11 PM | Report abuse

I don't have much room to talk about jerseys though. I think Atlanta's thirds have redeeming qualities.

Can Bruce wake up and put in Johnny?
I hate watching Theo flop around and scramble on the ice every game.

Defense was also horrible this game.

OV and Backstrom were the only guys who played the full 60 minutes today.

Posted by: ILikeLaich | December 2, 2008 10:20 PM | Report abuse

I did not see or heard the game, but looking at the stats of the game, I have a couple of questions:
1. Who chooses the 3 Stars of the game? Backstroms stats are horrible and yet he was a third star - of course, I am one of those who claim that stats can be deceiving.
2. Theo: 4 shots 0 goals, 9 shots 3 goals, 8 shots 1 goal. When will BJ get a fair shot at being the number 1 goalie. Ok. I am being unfair to Theo, and I am going against my view that one should not rely strickly on stats, but BJ has been there behind has-beens for years and it is time to give him a fair shot.
3. And last, but not without a bit of sarcasm, did anyone notice that there was only one "Dumb" penalty? Yep, it was Nyls.

"Can Bruce wake up and put in Johnny?"

Were you at the game tonight? Because I'm assuming you didn't see the game if you blame any, but one, of the goals on Jose...

Explain to me how any/all of the goals were his fault please.

Alzner IS NOT ready for the show as a top 2 defender. No one, including the first line, came out to play tonight at the first whistle. The defense was beyond atrocious...to include the backchecking of the forwards. BB should make the team watch the entire second period and the first 3/4 of the third period in between making them do suicides for their lack of effort. The entire team sold out Jose tonight.

I'm going to be so bold as to say this was the worst game I've been to at the Verizon Center since the end of Hanlon.

"I guess now that we finally lost at home, the just-created Cap fans will see the importance of winning road games"

You made it home awfully early tonight for being a long standing Caps fan. Did you get a chance to see any of the game? Or are you just going to throw out the same crap every time you post?

Posted by: Yoshietree | December 2, 2008 10:39 PM | Report abuse

Really don't see how you can blame this all on Jose. Very few goalies could have stopped the results of the brain farts by Steckel and Mo. Steckel's was an especially deflating goal.

So what exactly did Sean Avery say to get indefinitely suspended? Wow. Must have been pretty bad.

I don't know why everyone's so quick to defend Alzner. I agree, he is not ready at all to play at this level. He wasn't even one of Hershey's better defenseman. They don't even need him on their blueline.
