Kovalchuk: 'Ovie, Next Time, Call Me'

The Atlanta Thrashers may be one of the worst teams in the NHL, but they definitely schooled Alex Ovechkin on the big screen tonight at Philips Arena with the following "PSA" about hockey players doing bad commercials:

Tarik reports that everyone in the building was laughing, the Eastern Motors superstar likely included.

Brucey B supposedly was not amused at all.

I was under the impression that Ovie's Eastern Motors commercial won the Oscar... for GREATEST COMMERCIAL EVER MADE.

Posted by: skins1110 | April 7, 2009 10:23 PM | Report abuse

Well done Atlanta communications department, well done.

Posted by: Section117 | April 7, 2009 10:25 PM | Report abuse

Mildly hilarious, especially with the inclusion of the horrible Colby Armstrong commercial and his defense on it.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 7, 2009 10:26 PM | Report abuse

Wow, judging from BB's reaction to this in the post-game interview, I think he needs to loosen the tie a bit. That was done in good humor, not malice. I have never questioned Boudreau's hockey acumen or character but he needs to lighten up! (They're lucky they didn't put his "Cup-holder" bit up there!)

Posted by: donknutts | April 7, 2009 10:27 PM | Report abuse

Touché by ATL, well done. That was hilarious... and it shows that Kovi has a little bit of a sense of humor (as opposed to being constantly pissed off on the ice - can't blame him though)

Posted by: johnzilla | April 7, 2009 10:30 PM | Report abuse

that was great, I don't what the fuss is about. I bet Ovie liked it.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 7, 2009 10:31 PM | Report abuse

That PSA was funny...I am sure Ovie laughed too!

Posted by: NatyBG | April 7, 2009 10:35 PM | Report abuse

haha
no complaints!

Posted by: oo7 | April 7, 2009 10:36 PM | Report abuse

thats rich

Posted by: _stevo | April 7, 2009 10:38 PM | Report abuse

I personally don't like it. I think it's 1000X more disrespectful than any celebration Ovechkin has ever done.

Posted by: Ovechwin | April 7, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

The worst thing about it is that http://www.youcantact.com is not a real site... maybe that is what BB was upset about!?!

Posted by: _828 | April 7, 2009 10:39 PM | Report abuse

lol, pwned. all in good fun though, at least that's how I see it.

the Easter Motors PR guy has gotta be sportin' a tree trunk after seeing this though...

Posted by: sargeantmofo | April 7, 2009 10:41 PM | Report abuse

hah personally I thought it was pretty funny. If I were Ovie I would just laugh, but then again I make an a$$ out of myself on a routine basis by wearing a Sombrero to hockey games.

But I do agree, if one were to get high an mighty, the argument could easily be made that the video blatantly "showed up" Ovie more so than any of his celebrations showed up anybody.

Posted by: SombreroGuy | April 7, 2009 10:42 PM | Report abuse

What do you think these guys actually GET from Eastern? And are the ads effective on Eastern's bottom line?

I mean, the production values are (probably deliberately) horrendous. Is that supposed to make me want to go to Eastern?

And yes, I think BB was just afraid that the cupholder (or even worse, the faceoff) Mercedes ad would be shown. He did seem a bit humorless in the post game when discussing the PSA.

Posted by: dukster | April 7, 2009 10:45 PM | Report abuse

*snicker*

OK, that was amusing.

Even more amusing? CAPS 4, ATL 2.

Take THAT, Thrashers, and put it in your hat!

Posted by: irockthered | April 7, 2009 10:45 PM | Report abuse

Totally above board. Having spent a lot of time working in comedy, you usually vet your subjects before taking potshots at them. They know he can take it, and it was drawn up in a light mood.

Think of it like this: if the subject were Don Cherry, or the tone "Ovie is a cocky d-bag", there would be whining and trouble, respectively. But done like this about Ovie, no problem

Posted by: info_stuporhighway | April 7, 2009 10:49 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone remember the whole "Lavar Arrington" fluff piece on the Caps earlier in the season?? Guess who is a majority owner of Eastern Motors...ummm...Lavar! So, he covers the Caps for a couple of days, gets OV to agree to do this, and then someone posts his practice on youtube.

I feel bad for all the football athletes who have been subject to these horrible commercials and felt even worse when OV was schlepping on the most recent Eastern Motors.

I'm actually very happy that Atlanta did this to OV and hopefully he learns his lesson.

Leonsis compared OV & Cindy to Bird & Johnson. Well, the latter two did McDonalds commercials....OV - that's what you aim for - not Eastern Motors.

Hence why someone other than his mother should be managing him.

Posted by: Jaymagz | April 7, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

My biggest problem is that it itself is full of bad acting. Its not funny, its lame.

Posted by: Ovechwin | April 7, 2009 10:50 PM | Report abuse

I've watched that a few times by now and I have a few comments (surprised, aren't you?)

1) Its still funny after the 3rd viewing.
2) Ovie can take it. If he can't, he should have walked out of that commercial shoot.
3) Colby Armstrong is just as bad an actor.
4) Bruce needs to ease up and have a laugh. Too much stress. For a guy with a sense of humor, he should have seen the funny side. Maybe it reminded him of the crap commercials he's been in (though he was the best part of those, by far).
5) ROn Hainsey was pretty good in front of the camera. He'll be a broadcaster one day.

Posted by: oo7 | April 7, 2009 10:59 PM | Report abuse

Eh, Ovie had the chance to hang out with some NFL players and goof off. I personally love the fact that he isn't super concerned with his "corporate image" as most athletes are. He has fun in everything that he does, that's one of many reasons why he is so much fun to watch.

Posted by: SombreroGuy | April 7, 2009 10:59 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and Kovalchuk saying "next time call me" was great. Because he's right!

Posted by: oo7 | April 7, 2009 11:01 PM | Report abuse

THings look good for you, Sombrero.
I think I'll miss the circus when it leaves town.

Posted by: oo7 | April 7, 2009 11:03 PM | Report abuse

I'm sure Ovie loved it too. Still annoying no mention of the fact he racked up assist #200 career tonight. Averaging 50 assists a year over his first 4 seasons in addition to his goal scoring only shows how much he brings to our team.

Varlamov was superb tonight...if this was his audition to be the backup for the duration of the playoffs it's hard to argue against it knowing Johnson would be cold coming back. Varly's quickness side to side was outstanding on a few of the key saves.

Backstrom again making everyone look good helping Flash and Kozzy out. I think Feds would like to forget his penalties in this one other than that pretty slow game, we did what we had to.

Magic # for 2 seed is down to 1 we can clinch it Thursday night with any points or a NJ loss in reg or OT.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 7, 2009 11:07 PM | Report abuse

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
oh man props to those thrashers people haha

Posted by: lovecaps28 | April 7, 2009 11:10 PM | Report abuse

i enjoyed the PSA. It just means the folks at the Verizon Center should start working on the rebuttle (sp?) for next season.

Posted by: abuddy2004 | April 7, 2009 11:14 PM | Report abuse

that's actually quite funny. considering what it could have been, and the fact that they even poked fun at one of their own (colby armstrong), i would actually say it was pretty tasteful. it seems more brotherly than malicious. besides, ovie probably thought it was funny.

Posted by: chevychase1 | April 7, 2009 11:15 PM | Report abuse

Oddly enough, the Pens are in 6th and could easily end up in 6th...if we clinch 2nd we wouldn't meet up with the 6th seed until the ECF. I know it's the series I want to see, as well the league I'm sure. That is a long way down the road and on the edge of what I expect from this season's playoff run but it is possible.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 7, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

The cup holder commercial wasn't included because A) Bruce isn't a player and B) its NOT a bad commercial, in fact its great

Posted by: doncosmic | April 7, 2009 11:16 PM | Report abuse

I used to know the guy who runs game entertainment stuff in Atlanta... funny dude who used to work at Capital Centre many moons ago.

Posted by: Timo17 | April 7, 2009 11:26 PM | Report abuse

Hey, no dissing the really big cup holder! I hope we need one, personally! :-)

I was MUCH happier about Varlamov's performance tonight than I was the other night. He made some BEAST saves out there, and he kept us in during that horrific second frame. Couple of observations:

* Fedorov? Stay out of the box? Pleeeease? Three of our six penalties went to Feds. Glad the Thrashers couldn't do anything with their power play!

I was, however, glad to see that his goal was credited to him. :)

* The loss by the Devils puts our magic number for getting that #2 seed at 1. We need 1 point to tie our franchise record for points in a season, and 2 to beat it. A win Thursday night will clinch both, and that would be super sweet.

Don't anybody say word one about "adjusted points," either... :-p I know this isn't the same NHL as far as how points are earned, but if the NHL is counting 107 points = 107 points, then I am, too!

Posted by: irockthered | April 7, 2009 11:27 PM | Report abuse

Well done, and funny too. Ovi looks pretty ridiculous, but I'm sure he was laughing too.

Posted by: Sonyask | April 7, 2009 11:28 PM | Report abuse

the islanders looked sharp tonight

Posted by: _stevo | April 7, 2009 11:29 PM | Report abuse

@_stevo: Like a bowling ball - or a team interested in Tavares.

Posted by: kittypawz | April 7, 2009 11:34 PM | Report abuse

haha nice one.
How OVI pronounces SUV, how can you not love the guy :D

lol stevo.

Posted by: mauree | April 7, 2009 11:34 PM | Report abuse

_stevo, huh? Sharp as in, lay there like a pair of scissors while the Canes rocked all over them?

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 7, 2009 11:37 PM | Report abuse

Bruce was actually pissed about that?? I'm surprised.

Good fun.

Posted by: thusler | April 7, 2009 11:39 PM | Report abuse

Varly got Feds to translate for him finally...

"Stop knocking the puck in our own net"

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 7, 2009 11:39 PM | Report abuse

Oh but there's more to this, Caps fans. (I was at the game tonight). After they ran that PSA, the celebratory video for the next Thrashers goal was a clip featuring MULTIPLE mini-Ovechkins doing that ridiculous dance. That was funny too - but this is getting embarrassing...

Posted by: CAP-lanta | April 7, 2009 11:39 PM | Report abuse

Ovie is the type of guy who can laugh at himself and laugh at others laughing at him. That's part of why we love him so much and just part of who he is.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 7, 2009 11:44 PM | Report abuse

absolutely hilarious!!!!

Posted by: BuffaloCrunch | April 7, 2009 11:47 PM | Report abuse

hey the islanders looked sharp as in....tanking the rest of the year to get the #1 pick (something the wizards should do)

Posted by: _stevo | April 7, 2009 11:47 PM | Report abuse

As subjective as the process is, I would like to know how Varly wasn't named one of the three stars.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | April 7, 2009 11:52 PM | Report abuse

varlamov was certainly impressive tonight.

I'm watching SJ/COL. The abs aren't looking like a last place team right now.

Posted by: oo7 | April 7, 2009 11:58 PM | Report abuse

abs. I hate the auto correct. Make it right, apple!

Posted by: oo7 | April 8, 2009 12:00 AM | Report abuse

Fantastic stuff out of the Thrashers with that video.

And Bruce should lighten up and realize, that video is the highlight of Atlanta's season.

Posted by: writered21 | April 8, 2009 12:02 AM | Report abuse

claude lemiuex. Unreal.

Posted by: oo7 | April 8, 2009 12:07 AM | Report abuse

For those of you that are angered by this; lighten up, it is hilarious! Ovie had to get a laugh out of it.

Posted by: croftonpost | April 8, 2009 1:07 AM | Report abuse

If they had stopped at Ilya saying "Call me" it would have been a great ribbing. Keeping the dance going like that did seem to be rubbing it in maybe a little too much. Kind of "Hey, look at the stupid Russian trying to be like us!" just a little.

Still funny though. I hope the Caps video crew starts digging up every embarrassing clip they can of the opposition for both the playoffs and next year.

Posted by: EricS2 | April 8, 2009 2:30 AM | Report abuse

Bruce should be happy they didn't show his footage from the movie Slapshot.

Posted by: ThomasJefferson | April 8, 2009 5:24 AM | Report abuse

This is freakin hilarious! I love Ron Hainsey now, he must be their Bradley. I'm sure Ovie has a copy of this by now and laughs his butt off at it. People who find this offensive need to get a sense of humor.

Posted by: farmgirl19C | April 8, 2009 10:39 AM | Report abuse

Pretty funny

Posted by: C-A-P-Scapscapscaps | April 8, 2009 10:55 AM | Report abuse

Funny, but it did go over the line by mocking another team's individual player. That ISN'T done.

Posted by: poguesmahone | April 8, 2009 11:12 AM | Report abuse

I'm baffled. The world was on Ovi's back for his hot stick routine and the words "disrespecting the other team" was tossed around and generally, we rallied behind him. Of course, the other team felt disrespected. How is the PSA about bad commercials not "disrespecting the other team" if it's poking fun at Ovi's commercial (hated it when it came out, hate it even more now)? And for the record, no stick up my bum and I'm not wearing a tie today so I'm as chill as I'm going to get on that topic. I'm with Boudreau on that one.

Posted by: LeftCoastCapsFan | April 8, 2009 12:01 PM | Report abuse

Ovie loves this stuff. He likes being booed. He's a great celebrity, he appreciates the attention, but doesn't get off on it...at least in a bad way.

ANYONE doing an Eastern's commercial knows that they're ridiculous.

Posted by: remain | April 8, 2009 12:32 PM | Report abuse

Eastern ought to get Kovalchuk to do a commercial as well...

As for Bruce, he better win the Cup this year, otherwise I suspect his car ads will be the Thrashers next target. ;)

Personally, I think this is a scream and I'm sure Ovie got a kick out of it.. well, ok I'm sure Semin, Feds, Backstrom, etc. got a kick out of it...

Posted by: MikeL-Caps91 | April 8, 2009 1:40 PM | Report abuse

That was pretty funny. I agree that Varly did an outstanding job last night and really saved our butts quite a few times. I'm liking the kid more every day!

Posted by: mikesgirl1 | April 8, 2009 3:11 PM | Report abuse

RE: thrashers PSA

had to go to youTube to find it, but worth it, very funny, esp Kovalchuk cameo.

just one point is all it takes: let's hope we get it tonight, we can give the fans a look at the Hershey Bears on Sat night...

Posted by: WritingLight | April 9, 2009 11:31 AM | Report abuse

@davethecapsfan

Varly's poor english probably has his confused. He hears BB tell the players to create traffic in front of the net - he's thinking 'no! no! get outta my way...'
