Thursday Morning Update

Center Boyd Gordon left practice with an undisclosed injury and did not return. Coach Glen Hanlon said it was for "precautionary" reasons. We're supposed to get an update on his status soon.

If Gordon can't play tomorrow against the Rangers, David Steckel will replace him on the checking line and skate between Matt Pettinger and Chris Clark. That would also mean Brian Sutherby would see his first action of the season because he would replace Gordon.

Update:Olie Kolzig is expected to start at the Garden, his favorite building in the league. That probably means Brent Johnson will get his second start of the season in Buffalo.

I know it's a different year, with two different vibes attached to each team, but I still have nightmares about that game in Buffalo last December.

How does Sutherby look in practice? Is he showing any signs of a lingering injury, or is he simply the 5th center / 14th forward who is getting lost in the shuffle?

Posted by: billy | October 11, 2007 12:01 PM | Report abuse

UMMM Yeah! I was at the game in Buffalo last Dec wearing a throw-back Hunter Jersey and was just about laughed out of the HSBC Arena! Lets hope Johnny pulls it together this time as I will be there again this year, expecting different results. Hope BG's injury is not serious!

You wre not alone Sam. I was there too. I live in Niagara Canada. I left with my head down.

Posted by: Brad | October 11, 2007 12:11 PM | Report abuse

If I'm Hanlon, I show the video of the first ten minutes from that game in December. Let the team remember what it felt like to be humiliated by the Sabres and then open the locker room doors and let them get some revenge.

You guys should have just gone to the Buffalo game in DC - that was the best game of the year!

Posted by: Stormblue | October 11, 2007 12:17 PM | Report abuse

Any word on how Slapshot is doing? Was he really hurt on Sat night?

NOT GOOD news about BG, you never see that guy make any mistakes...

Posted by: jma | October 11, 2007 12:25 PM | Report abuse

Hope BG gets better soon...

Posted by: LeeinDC | October 11, 2007 12:28 PM | Report abuse

Not a good thing if one of the caps' best defensive forwards is out against a high potency offense.

Posted by: Graham | October 11, 2007 12:31 PM | Report abuse

Too bad about Gordo. The last thing this team needs is injury woes again.
Now, if they can sort out the PP over the weekend I'll be happy. Here's a hint for them....MOVE! All 5 guys get out there, pick a spot, then pass around. That makes for an easy PK. Weak side needs to find the open spots and streak into them. Move, move move!

Slapshot got hurt? Well I guess I'll over look the fact that our mascot was falling over himself for the home opener then... really embarassing by the way when you have out of towners with you...

Posted by: Dang | October 11, 2007 12:33 PM | Report abuse

Slapshot's hurt? I guess I missed that on Saturday. Olie like playing at the Garden. I though everyone hated the place because the ice is so awful.

Posted by: EricS | October 11, 2007 12:39 PM | Report abuse

Tarik: Any idea why Olie likes MSG so much?

Posted by: Alex | October 11, 2007 12:57 PM | Report abuse

Its MSG baby, NY is the center of the universe. There is something special about that place, the fans are usually really into the game and it makes a nice atmosphere.

Ill be there.

Posted by: TJ | October 11, 2007 1:02 PM | Report abuse

I'm flying north for the the Caps-Buffalo game on Saturday night ...

No Semin, no Olie? That'll make winning all the more sweeter.

Plus, we have Ovechkin. And the Sabres don't.

Slapshot? Hate to sound rude, cause I know there's a real person in that chicken suit, but Slapshot is really a stupid looking and acting mascot.

Posted by: Dezlboy | October 11, 2007 1:23 PM | Report abuse

Tarik. Great work as always.

I know this is not your responsibility but you might pass along to the Wash Post graphic designers for the Capitals home page on the site that the NHL logo they have on it is three years obsolete. After the lockout the NHL replaced the brown and orange one on the Post site with the current black and gold one.

I thought about when I saw that NHL Center Ice standings still shows the old Caps logo (i.e., the Capital dome and hockey sticks).

Posted by: Monty | October 11, 2007 1:28 PM | Report abuse

Correction: The new NHL logo is black and silver.

this doesnt look good for gordon, whats the update?

Posted by: Anonymous | October 11, 2007 1:44 PM | Report abuse

Hey everybody--

*still no update on Gordon.

*Sutherby is just kind of the fifth center right now. If he gets the chance to play, he had better make the most of it.

Posted by: Tarik | October 11, 2007 1:56 PM | Report abuse

I can only assume you're referring to the early December Sabres visit to DC. The one in April was so far beyond dismal that it hurt all summer long.

In the end, maybe that was a good motivator for the team.

Posted by: Goat | October 11, 2007 2:18 PM | Report abuse

Sucks for Sutherby. The guy went from being "the future captain" to essentially trade fodder in about a year.. best of luck to him..

Posted by: Vlad | October 11, 2007 4:27 PM | Report abuse

Kudos to my fellow Caps fans for wearing Caps' sweaters in the hockey mecca of Buffalo! Way to go!

Posted by: Hattrik23 | October 11, 2007 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Why am I enjoying it so much that Atlanta STINKS this season? They look just awful.. another spanking by Buffalo tonight.

I know they've got plenty of time to turn it around but if this keeps up Hartley will be the first coach fired this season.

Posted by: Oneal | October 11, 2007 9:04 PM | Report abuse

Definitely the December game. A shelacking of the Sabres even after Ovie gets tossed for boarding Briere....and that was my person introduction to the sheer idiocy of Sabres fans - worst in the league.

Posted by: Stormblue | October 11, 2007 9:09 PM | Report abuse

Cox Cable in Fairfax County does not carry the new CSN Plus channel, which carries the overflow games for Comcast Sportsnet, so the Caps game against the Sabers will not be shown Saturday night. Contact Cox directly or send a complaint through the county.

on a grimer note, the caps havent won at the garden since 2004. but maybe that means the rangers are long overdue for an ass-kicking.

Posted by: czechsmix | October 11, 2007 9:29 PM | Report abuse

NHL Network doesn't start in Faquier County until Nov 7th.

Sorry...random hostility.

Posted by: pmoravek | October 11, 2007 10:48 PM | Report abuse

Steckel gets the nod ahead of Sutherby? That's gotta hurt.

Posted by: Mike13 | October 11, 2007 11:04 PM | Report abuse

what the heck is the deal with gordon, please

Posted by: Anonymous | October 11, 2007 11:16 PM | Report abuse

any word about NHL network in Montgomery County?

Posted by: MC | October 12, 2007 8:28 AM | Report abuse

Tarik, how about an article on the NHL Network with info on who's getting it when, what channel etc.?

Posted by: TheCapitalist | October 12, 2007 9:02 AM | Report abuse

Mike13: Welcome back.

Posted by: Rip | October 12, 2007 11:02 AM | Report abuse

NEED BLOG. Where's Friday's entry?? That being said, thanks for keeping us informed, Tarik.

Posted by: Bret | October 12, 2007 11:10 AM | Report abuse

Yes, I am kinda hankering for a fresh blog too. I wonder what's happening up in NY at the pregame.....(nudge, nudge)

Posted by: pmoravek | October 12, 2007 11:37 AM | Report abuse

Oneal, you're enjoying it so much because Atlanta is a bunch of cheap shot artists with a coach who encourages it. I can't stand the of the best games I went to last year was the loss to the Thrashers in November when Sutton tried to cheap shot Green and Brashear beat Vishnevski's face in. Hate, hate, hate it that they suck.

By the way....
Just figured out Tarik is doing a live discussion right now.

Put work on hold and join us for a while.

Oh don't get me started on a hate filled tirade!! I'm more than willing to dump on Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Pittsburgh, and the Rangers...but i think everyone has better things to do right now that listen to me rant!!

Posted by: Badkarma723 | October 12, 2007 1:04 PM | Report abuse

FYI, just got an email as a ticket holder from the Caps stating they are working with CSN, local government and Cox over the fact that Cox is the only area provider not carrying CSN+ (affecting Fairfax and Frederick).

The game vs. the Sabres will be replayed on CSN at 10:30 on Saturday.

Posted by: Shmoo | October 12, 2007 3:36 PM | Report abuse

Thanks Rip. Good to be back. Something happened with my Caps board login and I never took the time to look into fixing the issue.

I've been reading Tarik's blog for a couple of months now and finally felt like jumping in.
