Today's Lineup

Based on warmups, here's how the Caps should line up today at Nassau Coliseum:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Semin
Laich-Nylander-Clark
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley
Scratches -- Fehr, Steckel

Defense
Erskine-Green
Alzner-Helmer
Schultz-Jurcina

Jose Theodore is set to start in goal and will be backed up by Daren Machesney, who was recalled to replaced Brent Johnson, who suffered what's believed to be a minor injury in practice last week.

Let's Go Caps!!!!!!!!!

Posted by: cbs75 | January 19, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

No HD? Boooo!

Posted by: cbs75 | January 19, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Happy Birthday, GregAnnapolis!

Let's go Caps!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 19, 2009 2:09 PM | Report abuse

Ah, thats why Clark is in...ceremonial faceoff, you need you captain, if hes healthy.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

This kid McLean who is filling in for Hunter, I saw him play yesterday at the Bridgeport game.

Showed me nothing special, they were shut out by the baby Pens.

His 5th game in 6 days

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | January 19, 2009 2:10 PM | Report abuse

As stated in the previous post... I want two points for my birthday, go Caps!

And I also want CSN to fix the HD channel, they've got the 16:9 feed smooshed into a 4:3 space, then added wings. Just the 16:9 would be nice, thankyouverymuch. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 19, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

OK they fixed the HD channel. Thanks guys!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 19, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

cbs75, The Mausoleum in HD? Bwahahaha. It'll only make the cob-webs and empty seats more visible.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 19, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

This is a tough two more hours at work today... I need a different job. Or one where I work under someone who understands the importance of watching the game, even when it means less production :-).

Posted by: DrinkingPartner | January 19, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

That was weird....screen just jumped to HD mode. It's a positive sign.

Posted by: cbs75 | January 19, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

Oh, I forgot about Sim...CAPS KILLER!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:12 PM | Report abuse

i dont have an HD tv. :(
oh well.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 2:13 PM | Report abuse

DP: Do like me, take the day off! :)

cbs: It's not HD, it's 16:9 (widescreen). Just like all the other non-HD games have been this season. But still a marked improvement over 4:3!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 19, 2009 2:13 PM | Report abuse

Thats not a very strong group of centers down the middle. Too bad for Steckel. He's one of our more consistent performers.

Posted by: cstanton1 | January 19, 2009 2:14 PM | Report abuse

richmondphil, I feel your pain. All this HD stuff doesn't help me one bit.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 19, 2009 2:14 PM | Report abuse

jmu/richmond: It's not HD today, you're just missing a little bit of extra picture around the outside edges. Same level of clarity as your TV. :)

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 19, 2009 2:16 PM | Report abuse

Very sloppy so far, we have been accused of playing down to our competition...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:18 PM | Report abuse

not a good start, not the right effort for against a team that is desperate and playing all out physically.

Posted by: mauree | January 19, 2009 2:18 PM | Report abuse

if ovie deked there, i bet he wouldve had Danis. looked like the puck wasnt settled though.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 2:20 PM | Report abuse

Initial reactions:
Underestimating NYI and trying for the pretty play. Never bodes well.

OVECHKIN!!!

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 19, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

what a blast.

thats ovie's patented shot.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

OVI!!

Posted by: mauree | January 19, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

@GregAnnapolis

Did the same thing dude...took the afternoon off

Posted by: ralCapsFan | January 19, 2009 2:22 PM | Report abuse

Got to agree, pretty poor start.

mauree, any idea for streams other than justintv or atdhe.net. The atdhe one keeps pausing picture wise while the sound continues.

So at least I heard Ovie's goal!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 19, 2009 2:23 PM | Report abuse

@Dave

sorry atdhe is the only one :(
Sometimes they have server issues, try refreshing it.

Posted by: mauree | January 19, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

Let's go, PK!!

Posted by: cbs75 | January 19, 2009 2:26 PM | Report abuse

@DaveUKCapsFan

Be careful about the atdhe.net - someone else here mentioned the threat of trojan horses viruses.

Posted by: ralCapsFan | January 19, 2009 2:27 PM | Report abuse

BTW the Blues (worse team in the west) leading BOS 2-1. Cross fingers...

wow is this a PP for the Islanders? We played more on theirs than our end zone lol

AHHHHH...Caps in the Afternoon...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:29 PM | Report abuse

What if we could get DOUBLEHEADERS!!!??? Like in Baseball???

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

the true test.

maybe football will start playing more than 1 game a week.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 2:33 PM | Report abuse

doubleheaders in hockey?

Quite possibly the lamest thing I have ever heard.

and obviously from someone who never played the game at a high level

@rdy

he was being sarcastic. :)

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 2:35 PM | Report abuse

UKDave/mauree/Leeguru:
See what happens when I am not policing the blog?!? You guys are ALL in trouble!! :-P

ralCapsfan:
Actually, someone else was the offender today. In a "thank you" no less ... too funny! :-)

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 19, 2009 2:36 PM | Report abuse

@rdy4all2000

Be nice.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:36 PM | Report abuse

do the isles REALLY play zone D like they said? i cant beleive that.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 2:38 PM | Report abuse

Hmm ... glad we're up, but shouldn't we be up by more than one at this point?

RE: HD, I was indifferent until Mr. Boo insisted on getting new HD TVs (he, of course, said he wanted to get them for ME so that I could have a better hockey viewing experience ... right ...). Anyway, now that we have it, I'm sold, ESPECIALLY when watching hockey.

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 19, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

Good pressure from the Nyls line.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:42 PM | Report abuse

@Erskine just got walked around...ergh...

Posted by: ralCapsFan | January 19, 2009 2:43 PM | Report abuse

Whats the deal with people chanting 'freak' anytime Chara touched the puck on Saturday?

Posted by: derk45 | January 19, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

Not our best period, grateful we are up.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 19, 2009 2:44 PM | Report abuse

I've watched the caps play the full equivalent of a double header twice.

Once was against the Isles in '87. Almost 69 minutes of overtime hockey in a playoff game.

The other was against Pens in the playoffs. 79 minutes of OT.

Posted by: grackle5 | January 19, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

Who has a feeling BB will provide some insight on the 1st period...glad we're ahead but a bit loosey goosey....agree?

Posted by: ralCapsFan | January 19, 2009 2:45 PM | Report abuse

Mmmm, girls in hockey sweaters...

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 19, 2009 2:48 PM | Report abuse

Mixed feelings... we're clearly not putting the best effort... but, do we need it? As soon as we press a bit the accelerator, we dominate.

Posted by: mauree | January 19, 2009 2:48 PM | Report abuse

yeah, but the isles have also been, using your term, loosey goosey.

this game is a real back and forth scrambler. lots of pressure in both zones.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 2:49 PM | Report abuse

thanks Mauree, refreshing isn't solving it but will keep trying.

ralcapsfan,
Thanks, I'm covered though.

Not much worse than staying up past 1 AM watching OT only to lose.

correction-

Not much IS worse...

I was at that game in 87 - it was way past my bedtime (literally). I was too young to drink but, if memory serves, they must not have cut people off when the third period started like they do now ... the fans around up were pretty chippy!

clark haters.

haha

Posted by: richmondphil | January 19, 2009 3:03 PM | Report abuse

Good acknowledgement by CSN of Willie O. If nothing else it emphasizes the need to diversify this sport, so that it can get the acclaim it deserves. Caps have had a few minorities themselves, Brashear is current, but there is also Anson Carter, I think Simon was an acknowledged American Indian..can anyone name anymore?

The feed I've got is MSG. They have been giving Ovie much love as well as the Cpas in general.

BOS score twice within 19 seconds to go 3-2 up from 2-1 down. 3 mins to go in that game.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 19, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

solid effort by theo so far... everyone else needs to up their game as well. i think we came into this underestimating the isles, CAPS need to wake up!!

Posted by: jogabonito | January 19, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

wtf-e-fehr,
Look how BOS are struggling to get 2 points tonight. Sometimes you get dragged down to the oppositions level.

Next goal is big. If we score their heads will go down.

too much individualism right now, should play more for each other... come on boys...

Posted by: mauree | January 19, 2009 3:28 PM | Report abuse

definitely gotta win this game, if we want to catch up with BOS in the future.

Posted by: jogabonito | January 19, 2009 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Consistency is the key to an elite team. You have to get up for the big games, but you have to avoid the let down against the lesser teams. I think everyone has the tendency to play down (or up) to the competition. You just have to realize when it's happening and make sure you overcome it. Needless to say, I don't think we are quite there.....yet.

wtf_e_fehr
How about you look again at what I wrote. Coming back to score 3 times in the last 5 minutes against the worst team in the West is struggling. That game should have been over after 2 periods.

BOS should have been able to get their top line rested during the third but seems they had to pull out all the stops. I was fully aware they were in front. I posted that they had come from behind.

My point is they are not winning in convincing style. Just like the Caps.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 19, 2009 3:39 PM | Report abuse

Whoa Blues!
Come on Caps! No need to play down to their level.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 19, 2009 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Goal is deemed good, and there's OT in Boston. Two goals in 1:19 after Boston scored three goals in like 1:45 or something.

Posted by: GregAnnapolis | January 19, 2009 3:40 PM | Report abuse

Conceding twice in the last 80 seconds. That's handling your business is it??

Lets hope BOS sloppiness costs them a point!

Come on you Blues!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 19, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

I think I am watching the wrong game - that one sounds like more fun!! ;-) Hope the Bruins lose - we could be nipping at their heels!!

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 19, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

wow didn't expect that from the Blues! Nice effort. And good dent in the Bruins confidence, no matter the final score.

Posted by: mauree | January 19, 2009 3:46 PM | Report abuse

NESN keeps their cameras zoomed too far in for my liking. (Since complaining about CSN seemed to work earlier, I thought I'd give it a shot...)

About 2 minutes left in OT in Boston.

we need to score a couple and shift this game in case they score from "hey, NYI tied!" to "hey, they avoided a shutout".

Six minutes to go.

Posted by: --Boo-- | January 19, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

it was only a matter of time. Schultz played the pole there. I think our PK team should have two good Ds and grinders like Bradley and Gordon.

Joe B is 100% right here, can't have elite ambitions and not beat NYI. But we can do it, let's go BOYS!

Posted by: mauree | January 19, 2009 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Schultz has got to make that clear.

Whether we win in regulation or OT or SO makes no odds that NYI get a point. Come on boys, lets go win this.

Oh and mauree, nice work with the S-word!

cstanton1,
Right because people like Alzner would never, oh I don't know, catch the puck and throw it over the glass? Not saying I like them on there either, but a grinder can fire it over the glass just as easily as anyone else.

cstanton,

That is so true. Every time we're on a 5-on-3 PK it kills me...they just walk the puck in and bang...

Posted by: saintex | January 19, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Was Ovi wide open on an empty net earlier or was it a little different than how it sounded on the radio? Sounded like he essentially missed a layup.

Posted by: WVPhil | January 19, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

The Caps take 1 penalty through the first 2 periods and then with a 1-0 lead they take a parade of penalties in the 3rd, eventually costing themselves the lead. Just seems to me that the Caps have been taking a lot of stupid penalties in bunches lately.

of course anyone can, but if you have a defensive mentality and you're used to being on the PK you generally have a better awareness than a run and gun forward on an offensive line.

The mark of a good team is one which can play badly and still win.

Bruins, played a weak team, played badly and only picked up a point, at home.

Caps, played a weak team, played badly but picked up both points, on the road.

I'll take it.

Ok cstanton, as you only came on here when the Isles equalised I guess you can go.

the goal wasnt pretty, but the setup from feds and semin was.

feds takes it in, drops it to semin who drives to the net and puts it under a stick/Danis pads to wide open ovechkin.

?? - I missed his comments, I muted the whole game - the best experience I had while watching a Caps game at home. Sweet Jesus! my headache went away.

The best call? Bruce putting the Russian line + Green at the end of the game.

The worst call? Bruce taking apart a winning team.

The best serendipity moment? My dog stepping on the mute button and making me realize that I did not have to listen to Joe B and Locker.

Hey Boo, thanks for posting the remaining schedule! I think the Caps will look real good down the stretch...

Have you guys seen this?

I love a good Ovie/Crosby debate. Funny thing is they are really kinda debating just how better Ovie is than Crosby, not just who is better!! ;-)

MReilly9:
No problem (mauree's wish is my command!). If nothing else we should certainly end the season strong ... unless we play like we did today! :-X

I should have said - how MUCH better ...

what's this S- word that everyone is talking about? I'm kind of curious

Only one game with a time change left. Good thing or bad thing? My thoughts (fwiw), good thing in that there's no more crazy travel/jet leg/etc. Bad thing in that a good chunk of those games are against "lesser" opponents and everyone knows what seems to happen then.

Boo!, you know, it was a fine effort of schedule posting, but its missing something. XD

jogabonito,
We were giving mauree a hard time because he used "shutout" before the end of the game. History seems to hold that if you say it before it happens for sure, the shutout will be blown.

JMU:

Boo, you forgot all the "The End is not nigh!" spiel that windjammer adds.

JMU:
LOL!! I just cut and paste, girlfriend. If the Caps want to add that to their download, then I will be sure to snatch it next time ... ;-)

Boo, lol. I will gladly strap on goalie equipment and face down Ovie, Greener and Juice the day they put that on their schedule.

@kevbnyc

Not sure if you were referring to me...if so, let me know what you wanted to touch base on.
