Today's Lineup

Less than 24 hours after last night's 5-1 throttling of the Lightning in Tampa, the Caps are back at it - but with several changes to the lineup. Jose Theodore will start in goal. Jay Beagle, Milan Jurcina and Karl Alzner are back in. Michael Nylander, John Erskine and Staffan Kronwall are out (healthy), and Viktor Kozlov will miss his fifth game with a groin muscle pull.

Here's how they should line up:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr
Laich-Steckel-Gordon
Brashear-Beagle-Bradley

Defensemen
Morrisonn-Green
Alzner-Poti
Schultz-Jurcina

Green can tie the franchise record for consecutive games with a goal tonight (the record is nine). Bruce Boudreau, meantime, thinks this game is really important from a psychological standpoint. The Caps have a 11-point lead on the Panthers.

"They're catching us [but] we can really do a number on them if we beat them," he said. "And we just want to establish dominance over a team. We haven't done it. We're 1-1 against these guys. [But] it's very big, psychologically, to win these games."

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Presuming Nylander is a healthy scratch?

Posted by: Section117 | February 15, 2009 3:43 PM | Report abuse

The key is knowing we are better than this team and going out to prove it.

All of the good teams are starting to win a high percentage of their games. It is time for us to continue with no blips in the screen.

Let's Go Caps!!

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | February 15, 2009 3:56 PM | Report abuse

Perfect lineup changes in my opinion. Much as we hate on Mo he and Green were +3 last night. Nylander looked out of it last night. Whether it's the wrong linemates or just him not being a productive #1 or #2 center anymore I don't know. If he's unhappy maybe he'll accept a trade somewhere so we can get a little value while clearing some cap space.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

Lots of goals in the first period of San Jose and New Jersey... Come on SJ!!

The Rangers have serious problems, I think Tom Renney gets fired very soon.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 15, 2009 4:00 PM | Report abuse

Great to see the Beagle get another shot, if he plays the Boards like he did in his first game, he may stay for another week.

Posted by: gtydings | February 15, 2009 4:02 PM | Report abuse

People make it sound like we've been going through a down spell. 6-2-2 in last 10 games only one other team in the league as of last night had gotten more points out of their last 10 games (NJ who we beat).

NJ beating SJ 3-2 start of 2nd. Could really use the Sharks help there I hope that flu bug they've had is getting better.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 4:05 PM | Report abuse

Hope to see great productivity from the OBS line and the Effing-F Line once again. They were great last night.

Posted by: CapsFan75 | February 15, 2009 4:06 PM | Report abuse

I'm just glad to see another bit of consistency in the lines, especially because I am very much so Pro-F and B lines :)

Posted by: abuddy2004 | February 15, 2009 4:07 PM | Report abuse

Dave,

My biggest concern is that we have been playing pretty well but yet it seems teams are closing the gap (Panthers) or passing us (Devils). We just need to stay focused on each team and take the points.

No room to falter. Just a paranoid fan of 30 years speaking. :)

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | February 15, 2009 4:10 PM | Report abuse

Notice that we not only have the F line tonight but also the B line.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | February 15, 2009 4:11 PM | Report abuse

Woohoo. Glad to see Beagle back in it! I liked the energy he brought last time, plus I really enjoyed watching him in Hershey last Sunday (my first Hershey game and I thought he really stood out!)

I also love that we are healthy enough/have such a full roster that we can rest some players up for a fresh start tonight (even a whole defensive pairing!). Though I thought we played well last night, and dominated at times, I am glad they got their goals early on, because I think as the game went on they definitely looked to be on saving energy mode (so good that they still outplayed the Bolts!).

Here's to a good win, make the mentors trip extra special for all!

Posted by: The_Stanley_Caps | February 15, 2009 4:12 PM | Report abuse

It only appears the Panthers are closing the gap because we still have 2 games in hand on them and before last night they had won a couple games in hand. They are something like 12-3-3 in the new year but over the last 10 games the gap has stayed the exact same. NJ has caught us as I said they were the only team in their last 10 to get more points than us. We just need to keep winning games, both to start finishing up the job of clinching the southeast and to stay ahead of NJ (and Philly who I think will close the gap with NJ).

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Excuse me they still have 2 games in hand on us.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

I sure hope they prove the vibe I'm feeling wrong.

This is a great game for the team to build character.

Posted by: austinsteve | February 15, 2009 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Actually, the Panthers have played one less game than us so they have one in hand.

Posted by: CTCapsPhan | February 15, 2009 4:20 PM | Report abuse

Dave,

We don't have 2 games in hand on the Panthers. They actually have 1 on us.

And we aren't ahead of NJ. Technically, they are in 2nd place in the conference since they have more wins.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 15, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

I'm thinkin I like "Killer Bees" for the 3 B line

Posted by: ebolean | February 15, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

I really hate 5 pm games!!

Posted by: rachel216 | February 15, 2009 4:24 PM | Report abuse

Yeah I corrected myself they had 2 games in hand on us before last night is what I meant. We've had a lot of off days of late and they had caught up to us in games played and won both of their games in hand so it "seemed" like the gap was closing.

I said NJ had caught us? I guess I should have said surpassed us but I was aware they are ahead on the win tiebreaker ;). Terrible phrasing my apologies, watching the Inter v. AC Milan game on FSC while waiting for 5pm

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 4:26 PM | Report abuse

The Devils are looking consistently good these days and have Brodeur due back soon. That definitely was a big win we got against them last week.

They are controlling the game against the Sharks right now. Hopefully, the Sharks can take over in the 3rd.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 15, 2009 4:28 PM | Report abuse

I like seeing Beagle get back in there, he was one of the first ones over to have a word with the rags if they were taking liberties against us.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 15, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

Dave,

I just read "to stay ahead of NJ" as if we were currently ahead of them.

Re: Theodore, Varlamov, and Neuvirth - When Theo is hot, he is a superb goaltender. Varlamov has spent a fair amount of this season hurt, which doesn't help him out at all, and while Neuvirth was absolutely BRILLIANT last night, it's one game. I'd have to see him play several before I call him the god of the pipes.

I am content, right now, to keep Theodore as our #1 goaltender, with the boys from Hershey and the Rays backing him up. He's shown himself to be a top-drawer goaltender, and hopefully he'll continue to play well tonight.

Re: Nylander - We don't know what might make him waive his NMC... but with seven small children - I think six of the seven are school-aged? - it's probably going to take more than being benched for a game or two...

Re: the Fleischmann-Fedorov-Fehr Line - WooT! I really think that line has clicked mightily, but we've got to come up with a better nickname for them than the Three Eff's. :-p

@ebolean - I'm with you on "Killer Bees" for the fourth line! As long as Brads and Brash can stay out of the box so that Beagley-Beagley gets more than five minutes of ice time all game, they really have clicked well together. :-)

Re: Laich-Steckel-Gordon - Those three worked well together last night, too, I thought!

The problem will be where to put Kozlov when he comes back. He plays SO well with Ovechkin and Backstrom, but that would either drop Semin to the Laich-Steckel-X line, and Gordon to the bench, or it would disrupt the Flying Wallendas on the second line... argh! What a problem to have!!!

I'll be missing the game tonight, unfortunately; have agreed to take my daughter and two of her friends swimming... someone tweet the scores to me? I'm irockthered on Twitter. Gotta know if Greenie scores again!!! I love the Green Monster! :-) :-) :-)

Posted by: irockthered | February 15, 2009 4:31 PM | Report abuse

Ah I see tmac. Forgive my optimism I'm expecting a SJ win and us to beat Fla tonight ;).

I really think this puck is in but they won't give it to SJ. You could infer that it ended up over the line but no visual evidence to say for sure.

I wish the Post would print Games Played in the Standings. It's so important in hockey, and frankly doing the math is not much fun, or you can just get it online, but that's the main culprit for the decline of newspapers, availability of free online news.

I turned it off around the 60th, Inter was up 2-0, and Becks was in, but it wasn't their finest effort.

Posted by: Section117 | February 15, 2009 6:05 PM | Report abuse

UKDave...Inter won 2-1. They just were stronger on finishes they got up 2-0 in 1st half against the run of play I thought...then dominated the first 20 minutes of the 2nd half. AC closed the gap and probably should've tied it late, but fell 2-1. Becks played the first half he looked pretty good I don't know why they took him off to be honest.

Last year we got 2 seats in sec 104 for $75 a piece and the Dewars promo was included. This year the seat are $80 and the Dewars thing is an extra $15. The price of winning I guess, lol. In case anyone is curious, UMBC topped Navy 7-4 to win the 2009 Crabpot Tournament. Didn't catch the consolation game, I think it was UMD vs Towson though.

The level of talent seemed much higher this season than last. Great job by all involved! Sure, the ref had a lousy call or two, but they play a one ref system. And the ice was in awesome shape; crisp clean passing the whole game.

I was standing in the back corner because my AM radio didn't get reception otherwise. But I did get to hear Ovie's PPG go in. :) And then Fehr's goal as soon as I pulled into the driveway. Now I want to SEE a Caps' goal! Let's go, strong third period!

Posted by: patrone | February 15, 2009 7:09 PM | Report abuse

Two minutes ago my DH said that Semin was due for a penalty. I told him to bite his tongue because Semin would oblige. Sure enough ... so I blame Mr. Boo for that one.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 15, 2009 7:10 PM | Report abuse

Always an adventure from game to game. Never know what Caps team you'll see. Will it be last night's solid defensive and disciplined squad that recorded a 5-1 win? Or will it be the frustratingly knuckled-headed, sloppy bunch that commits 5+ penalties a game, like the one performing tonight in this 2-2 game?

Posted by: CDon | February 15, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

I'd like to see Semin drive more to the net there.

Posted by: cbs75 | February 15, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

I think it was a weak call against semin, maybe that's why they let Poti slide. It evens out. Just a little sloppy. I'd like to win this in reg but at this point I'll take 2 points however it comes.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Vokoun will not let another in, we'll lose, hopefully we get 1 point. Not a great game played by us, offense was off, and obviously taking WAYYY too many penalties. This feels like the Rangers game, cept, we scored more in that game.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 15, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

Actually we will be very lucky to even get a point, the score should be 3-2 Panthers, so I guess we are lucky right now.

the difference between the Bruins and the Caps is discipline. The Bruins have taken the 4th least amount of minors and the Caps have taken the 7th most. And I believe the Caps are more talented than the Bruins.

ROAD TRIP OBSERVATIONS FROM A CAPS FAN IN FLORIDA:

It was ashame I wasn't able to attend either game but there is always next month. :)

A solid solid effort by the Caps in Tampa. It's only one game but Neuvirth??? WOW. Solid - nice glove save on Vinny. They just keep plugging away.

They stayed with it in Sunrise and who else to make the difference then the great 8 himself? It's what he's paid to do. Even the empty net offered a friendly bounce off the post. A solid 4 point weekend.

Finally above moving over .500 on the road and have to keep it up. Now it's back home for five straight. Have to continue to take care of that home cookin. The Habs are on the horizon. Bring it.

So, how many teams can play shorthanded for 16 minutes against a quality opponent and still come out on top?

Not very many, is the answer.

Posted by: chrisd3 | February 15, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

I think you can officially declare he's turned a corner. It's been about a 20 game stretch since the Rangers game when he got pulled. His numbers since then have been extremely solid. Maybe even great.

Sucks that Green's streak ended but we've got plenty of guys who can score when we need it...including the best one of them all. Man he just decided to get over the 40 hump fast...I think 60 is going to happen now. If you look at his numbers since coming back from the trip to Russia he is averaging almost a goal a game over that span.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

Funny stat too. Semin's assist on one of Ovie's goals put him over 50 points on the year. Caps are the first team with four 50 point scorers this year. Imagine how much faster that would've been hit had Green/Semin not missed so much time. Young Guns indeed.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

chrisd3:
True, but think how much better they would be playing if they avoided ALL of those darn penalties? (Oops - just broke my own 'basking in the glory' rule.)

Dave:
Good point - I'm in. And I agree about Green - I wish he had gotten one of those goals. :-/ Oh well, one record ain't bad! ;-)

Posted by: --Boo-- | February 15, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Hahaha. I just got back, had to miss the last two frames due to a scheduled bridge game. Do you have any idea how maddening it is to try to bid and play contract bridge when you can half-hear a game like that?

I was concerned about tonight - Panthers games are always a tighter affair than some others and it was the back half of a back to back.

8 penalties?! SLOPPY SLOPPY SLOPPY, and I can't quibble something I didn't see. I hope we get a serious practice tomorrow and/or Tuesday.

Ovi is back! Hat trick for the Great 8 is awesome stuff. Pity for Green's streak, but I'll take the win and run. I'd been concerned about Ovi, I hadn't seen him score that much lately, but it seems he's back with a vengeance.

Regarding being worried - hey. I lost my bet, fair and square, but we took four points out of the weekend, and that's worth double fines. More importantly, it was in regulation, meaning no extra points for the Panthers. That puts us 13 points up on them and pretty firmly in command of the SE.

Now we just need to catch NJ, and since they just downed the Sharks (dang it all), it's not going to be easy. Time to look to the Canadiens and after that the Avs.

As long as we can STOP taking those blasted penalties.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 15, 2009 7:43 PM | Report abuse

WWWAAAAYYYYY too many penalties tonight. But great teams find ways of winning in spite of sloppy play.

Posted by: Greg S. | February 15, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Ovie should just play weekends. 5 goals the other weekend with the back to back 12:30 starts, and 4 goals this weekend @Tampa and @Fla.

@kitty

Yeah killing 7 of 8 is good...I'd love to say some of these calls won't be made come playoff time but delay of game is automatic, heh. That F line keeps scoring once a game...can't complain about it at all.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

@Dave: So should we call it the GAG line now? I'm really happy for Fehrsie, he's making stuff happen out there and is making a good argument for a permanent sweater. Good stuff happens when that line is on the ice.

The SOB line is really making a strong case to be called that. They make defenders say it when they get the puck and they make us say it when they take a lazy penalty.

@kitty

The GAG line? I don't know the F line sounds so much better. LOL SOB hadn't thought of putting it in that order. Now the pressure is off Green can put a hat trick in against the Habs. You don't realize how Ovie can explode until it happens. Sometimes you need that. I still can't get over how he's at 41 before anyone else is even at 35 after his slow start. Passed up Crosby for #2 in points too. 7 behind Malkin with 2 less games played.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 8:13 PM | Report abuse

hahaha 117, I couldn't help it. Sometimes the linesmen in soccer matches are just horrible at calling offsides. I think he was clearly not offsides and truth was the linesman didn't even raise the flag until he had already finished his break. "jobber" and "jobbed" have been in my vocab the last couple days so I put it in there. :)

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 8:15 PM | Report abuse

@Dave: Goal A Game line. :) It's an old holdover from Caps history, though maybe those who have been around longer than I could tell you who was on it.

I don't get credit for the SOB designate. That was someone else's wizardry, but it fits more the more I watch them play.

Posted by: kittypawz | February 15, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

No, I'm cool with the vocab, but I think that even when two cartoon characters start pushing one another, Ronaldo would cry for a card/call.

Posted by: Section117 | February 15, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

@kitty

I got the goal a game reference, just reading/saying it as "gag" doesn't have the same ring to it as "The F Line" ;)

SOB line looks great when they're not trying to make highlight goals all game, instead keeping the puck possession game going and getting a lot of good chances.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

@117

He does complain a lot and go down a lot, but to be fair...EVERY soccer/football player does it hahaha. He tackled hard quite a number of times without any calls and plays at such speed all the time when he's making his moves it doesn't take much to knock him off his feet.

"Then, despite a broken stick, he deposited an empty-netter from the defensive zone to seal the game.

Oh yeah, he also told Tomas Vokoun during pre-game warmups that he would score two on him -- and then went and did it (plus an empty-netter for good measure)."

Pens replace him with the WBS coach? Trying to pull their own BB out of the hat I guess. It was clear what Therrien was doing wasn't working though. That team may not be as good as last year's but they have too much talent to be out of the playoffs.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 15, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

LOL he TOLD Vokoun he was going to bury 2? Ovie basically said "You're just a jobber, I'm hitting 40 tonight".

I'm worried about the amount of penalties but I don't think you're going to see Federov and Backstrom take delay of game calls like they did today too often. I didn't like the call on Semin either. Just glad the PK held it down to keep us in it. Thought Beagle had another decent game.

Hey check this out (to add a little spice to the dessert):

I'm sure you are aware by now (not!)that Thursday, Feb 26 fires off the 21-game salute. But did you know that 4 straight games are at home "before" kicking off the 21-game salute. While those teams present a good challenge they are at home and our crowd is the 7th man. It will be a good tune up for us.

The other thing I'm sure you missed but the Wind is here to make sure you don't is that the Penguins (who we love to hate) play 9 out of the next 12 games on the road. Man if there ever is a time for them to melt away on the thin ice of new day let's consider this the beginning of the end of their season. And to boot they have to play our CAPS twice in the Phone Booth with the ZOO present.
