Wait what happened to Thomas Vokoun? Also, I'm getting a kick out of reading the comments on Islanders point blank. They are dreaming- their comments:

"Yes Guerin to Caps. Probably Guerin and a 6th rd pick for Ovechkin and Semin"

"Only if we get Green also."

Yeah, only in your dreams!

Yea! Return of the Killer Bees fourth line

@ rachel216

That's funny, keep dreaming Isles, good luck in the draft, haha

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 1, 2009 2:53 PM | Report abuse

Would this be interesting? Mo and something for Pronger? That'd cut almost $2m from the payroll to make up for some of Pronger's. It would be a definate upgrade in D. Prorata share would be doable and still leave room for Alzner to come up.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 1, 2009 2:54 PM | Report abuse

I'd also suspect all these scratches are to put it into Nylander's head that he's not part of the picture in DC anymore. Please waive the NTC and you'll play - just not here.

Posted by: Greg S. | March 1, 2009 2:55 PM | Report abuse

Mo and something for Pronger???

Would that something be Semin and Green with 10m in their pockets as well.

Come on...that's almost as bad as when I joked that Nyls and Beagle for Lidstrom was gonna happen.

Posted by: gtydings | March 1, 2009 2:57 PM | Report abuse

@section117

Getting wacked in the face, getting right back up and going after somebody in retaliation is different than someone "cutting him in half' and say him having to leave the game due to injury, don't ya think?

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 1, 2009 2:44 PM

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't part of Brashear's job requirement to help back up the skill players and give them room to operate? Shouldn't he have done that Thursday?

Posted by: Section117 | March 1, 2009 2:57 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, ludeman95, it's pretty hilarious. Why don't they just become Caps fans cause they want all our players. They also want some of our prized prospects. How about they find their own talent!!

i love Alexander Semin :)

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 3:04 PM | Report abuse

Yeah that is Brash's job to stick up for someone if they can't do it themselves. But Ov got right up and went after someone (even though it was the wrong guy). Im sure if Ov would of have had to of left the game due to that high sticking, Brashear would have been the first Cap to have a word with the guilty one.

Posted by: dmwechs1 | March 1, 2009 3:08 PM | Report abuse

Mo and something for Pronger doesn't work. For the millionth time, Pronger is 6.25. Mo is 1.975. The Caps have no space except LTIR replacement space, which is prorated by game just like the salaries.

As for Nylander, does the NMC prevent him going on waivers? Someone other thread asked about cap space if Nylander moves on. Well, look how Kronwall, because of waivers, has his salary and cap space split between Leafs and Caps. If Caps can and do put Nylander on waivers, and he gets claimed, the claiming team and Caps split the salary and cap hit. If he doesn't get claimed and gets sent to Hershey, then Caps pay full salary but no cap hit. However, I don't know if NMC prohibits this.

Posted by: tominfl1 | March 1, 2009 3:09 PM | Report abuse

Semin is a great 40 game player if he wants to be ! Lets not forget about his toughness! As he continues to steal money from Caps fans by taking days off when he feels like it...I know if I took that many days off i would be fired!

Here we are, 3 days from trade deadline and Nyls is scratched for a third time in a row. Obviously GMGM doesn't want him to get hurt because it would put his chances to trade him from 2% to 0%... By the way, Nyls can't be put on waiver and as of this morning, no one from the Caps had asked him to wave his NMC, which he would at this point. The NMC is not a barrier...

BB shouldn't have started Theo today in the first place. I thought he didn't like playing goalies on back to back days especially with the travel. But I believe we can comeback if we stop playing very loosey goosey as Locker loves to say.

I better see NEUVY between the pipes beginning the 2nd period. I'm actually very suprised. I thought after the 4th goal BB would pull him immediatley, without even thinking twice. Let's face it, they love playing in front of the young goalies.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | March 1, 2009 3:48 PM | Report abuse

I think someone from very high up in the Caps organization needs to address in public this Don Cherry thing. One, he's entitled to his opinion, but he suggested a player should be hurt and also, basically, criticed the Caps fan base by suggesting we probably also support Sean Avery. I am personally offended by Cherry, as I'm sure most of you are. Mr. Leonsis should, I feel, make a statement, defending not only Ovechkin but Caps fans, and indicate his personal offense at Cherry's statements. It would not be out of place for Gary Bettman to also criticize Cherry for criticizing Ovechkin's "fans." The club should start a war of words against Cherry, which would be a good rallying cry for the playoffs.

Posted by: tominfl1 | March 1, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

lazy backcheck and bad minors are just as much to blame as theo.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 1, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

Granted those goals weren't Theo's fault, especially the McCabe one (thanks Shultz) but BB needs to make a change to spark the team or Brash needs to go beat the snot outta somebody. This game isn't over. I don't even have a problem with the penalties, they happen but our PK SUCKS! Hershey probably has a better PK.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | March 1, 2009 3:50 PM | Report abuse

And i wouldn't mind seeing Neuvy as well. hehe. :) Come Caps, we've got 40 minutes, we can come back. We were down 4 in New York with 1 and a half period to go. Do you like my positiveness, Dave? :0

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 3:51 PM | Report abuse

Yes I love the optimism. It's never over with this team. 3 goals is nothing, DO IT.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 1, 2009 3:53 PM | Report abuse

To put it mildly,I've had my fill of Jeff Schultz. He's pathetic. Ironically, the one thing he does quite well, is SCREEN HIS OWN GOALTENDER. He's evolved that skill to a virtual science. TWICE, thusfar today, he's done it. Lately, it seems as though not a single game goes by where he shouldn't be given an assist for one of the opponent's goals. Disgraceful!
Maybe Sarge ( Or his agent ) DOES HAVE PICTURES on bb or George. I can think of very few other explanations for continuing to give this stiff 20 + minutes of playing time EACH & EVERY NIGHT.

Posted by: Puckguru | March 1, 2009 3:53 PM | Report abuse

Same problem with Hershey. Hershey and the Caps have terrible PK units relative to their overall win-loss record. Defense is a problem throughout this organization. This is not about cutting down on penalties, its about fixing a unit thats terribly broken. And its not just about our defensemen either, our forwards play a very high risk game on the PK.

Whether it's rubbing it in or not is only a matter of opinion. Any sport I played I never had a problem with an opponent getting pumped after they had made a good play/scored. Personally if someone takes it another way, maybe they shouldn't play competitive sports. It's even less class to get upset over such things in my opinion when you're getting paid (and paid very well) to do your job.

They should poll the league about it.

Still can't believe Det lost 8-0 yesterday.

Lefty ....my only beaf is with Semin that he is gettibg payed a good coin and only plays when he wants to...You should be on his case and Nylander for the same ..the other comments came from your views about Cherrys comments ...

Posted by: jogabonito | March 1, 2009 4:15 PM

Talk to Bruce. He'll moan and b__ch about this game after its over and threaten players with benchings but its really his fault. He selects the roster, he selects who gets to play on the PK units. He needs to look no further than himself in the mirror. But he won't. I have never heard him ever take the blame for any loss.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 1, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

Shultz is the WORST DEFENDER.HE IS NOT A HOCKEY PLAYER

Posted by: ludeman95 | March 1, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

I think that's it. Our offense looks horrid today, we absolutely HAD to have the score go to 4-2, we HAD to have the next goal, now it's 5-1, maybe its too late. poop. poor Neuvy, DUMB SHULTZ, get outta here, along with Theo and Nylander.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: gtydings | March 1, 2009 4:18 PM | Report abuse

Schultz didnt even know where to stand on that entire shift. He's too slow to chase any players so he stands around and lets pucks and players skate by him. Greenie is playing much better D lately and I feel bad that he gets stuck with Schultz. Hopefully the big oaf gets traded at the deadline along with Nyles.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 1, 2009 4:20 PM

toronto's stupid. And so is Bruce when it comes to certain things. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that Schultz stinks almost every game. The little we saw of Kronwall was a heck of a lot better than #55.

Posted by: cstanton1 | March 1, 2009 4:23 PM | Report abuse

panthers are hungry after that NJ romping yesterday.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 1, 2009 4:24 PM | Report abuse

A comeback now would be a long shot, would need at least 1 before the 3rd. Theo just needs to work on his recovery speed, he always seems to do that on a hard shot going wide where the perfect bounce will leave a gaping net on the other side. Although you could probably point that out happening to every goalie when the bounce off the boards is that clean.

im not defending schultz in any way, but i dont have much faith in a 26 year old whos spent most of his time in the AHL. i did appreciate his hitting.

Posted by: richmondphil | March 1, 2009 4:25 PM | Report abuse

Interesting...the ref saw the Fla guy make a motion towards his face and then raised his hand. They've missed a few of those for us the last couple days.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 1, 2009 4:26 PM | Report abuse

I wish I could say fatigue was a deciding factor here. However, the Panthers played yesterday as well.

The truth is yesterday's game was more important to the Caps than today's. Meanwhile, Florida is fighting for its playoff life.

We'll take a mulligan on this one. Let's see more fire in the belly on Tuesday guys!

Posted by: Terptwin | March 1, 2009 4:26 PM | Report abuse

@cstanton1,
That's an excellent point. he's quick to point fingers, but NEVER blames himself. Plus the fact that he DEFINITELY plays favoritism. Flash is his pet. "He was my Ovechkin in Hershey." Schultz, and Laich also can do no wrong in his eyes. Well, Bruce, NEWSFLASH! This is NOT the AHL. Flash has been virtually invisible for more than a month. And Laich, I could easily do without. Heck, in the last game and a half he's failed on THREE cold - blooded breakaways. Oh, well. The next game surely will be better than this. I hope...

Posted by: Puckguru | March 1, 2009 4:27 PM | Report abuse

Semin still working hard on the PK.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | March 1, 2009 4:28 PM | Report abuse

I remember when Chara sucked as a yongster, but he grew into his size...if Schultz can become half that, allright I understand. But Chara at least fought then, Schultz is a soft giant, with not as much potential and he can't clear the crease

Posted by: gtydings | March 1, 2009 4:30 PM | Report abuse

I think Laich is invaluable and the only reason Fehr was putting pucks into the net (he's missed far more wide open chances than Laich) is because of the work Flash/Feds were doing.

Posted by: ejohnsto | March 1, 2009 4:37 PM | Report abuse

The Caps have a 15 point lead in the SE division. The Panthers are in 6th in the division but 2 points from 11th place.

It would be a shame if the Panthers won today and those two points keep Pittsburg out and get a second team from the "lowly" SE into the playoffs this year.

Posted by: austinsteve | March 1, 2009 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Time to go out and play. The Caps are not having a good game. The talk on this blog for the last two days have centered on a Canadian old timer talking thrash and the Americans not liking it, the irony there is that he is what an American looks like to the rest of the world. The only amusing thing has been the guy needling the homers and getting satisfaction at their reaction.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 1, 2009 4:38 PM | Report abuse

Also, we seriously cannot clear on our PK!

And yes, I cannot stand Shultz anymore. He does absolutely nothing. The only thing he has is size and he doesn't even use it. BLEH! I've never felt so out of a game. Usually when we're down like this I feel we can come back but the way we're playing right now, I don't see that happening.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 4:39 PM | Report abuse

Well, the big games this month are against the Pens & the Flyers. The cats are 15 points below us so no big threat there and, who knows, we are capable of scoring 4 goals in the third.

What stands in our way for me continues to be first of all the goalie gap--inconsistency and uneveness; and secondly penalties and PK. Is Varly playing now? Does anyone know?

Posted by: caraveli | March 1, 2009 4:42 PM | Report abuse

I wish Shultz wasn't standing there!

4-1 is very much doable, 5-1 is like asking Jason Campbell to take the Redskins 80 yards down the field for the game tying touchdown with 2 minutes left, not a very great chance of happening. I hate this!

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 4:43 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: austinsteve | March 1, 2009 4:46 PM | Report abuse

New Jersey will retake 2nd place unless a miracle happens. UGH. I still say we need a better #1 goalie. I feel we are a better team than NJ but not in the goaltending area. If we had a goalie like Marty we'd be unstoppable, he could hide our many defensive efficiencies.

Posted by: StanleyCup1907 | March 1, 2009 5:05 PM | Report abuse

This is a team that heavily relies on its PP and if the other team doesn't give the Caps many chances they struggle to win. We're good on the PP, decent at even strength and miserable on the penalty kill. As long as teams don't give us 4 or 5 PPs every game its going to make it hard for this team to go far into the playoffs.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 5:05 PM

every team takes penalties though, most of them don't let the other team go 3 for 3 to start the game. IMHO its foolhardy to blame just the penalties, they have to fix the PK.
We're not taking 10 minors a game or anything and we're certainly nowhere near the league lead in PIMs

Also, this was predictable. This is the back end of back to back games for both teams. While we're coming off a huge win over the conference's best team and are prone to a letdown Florida is coming off a total shellacking by the Devils, so they're stepping up after getting yelled at by their coach. You combine these two factors and you get what we're getting today.

LONG AND HOPEFULLY WORTH THE READ:

This game sucked. Bump in the road. Detroit got it handed to them 8-0 as mentioned by a previous poster. You get over it and move on. Kudos to the Panthers for rebounding after they had a horrible game in Jersey the previous day. The Caps get their chance at home on Tuesday against Carolina.

Theodore and Neuvirth made solid saves today. You can't put that first period on Jose. The team let him down and left him out on the island. Lazy backchecking and standing around in the defensive zone will not get it done. They were outhustled and outworked.

PENALTY KILL: Coach Boudreau needs to wake up and smell the coffee. His passive box system does not work. When you don't challenge the high men at the points or put pressure on them and let them move the puck around - you're asking for trouble. I don't care how many men are down low or are in front of the net. The two D down low can do their best. Look at the Flyers and why they've been so successful. They are AGGRESSIVE and ATTACK the puck and don't give teams the chance to set up. Boudreau needs to start implementing that.

PENALTIES: Some ticky tack calls today. Gary Bettman must've made a phone call to these officials today after the Caps must've pissed him off by beating Boston yesterday. Laugh - I'm being sarcastic.

DEFENSE: For many of you that have watched the team this season - did it not seem like this team was more defensively sound when they had all those injuries? Hmmm? And if anyone can shed light on how Jeff Schultz is still up here and Alzner is in the AHL - enlighten me. Is it a cap issue? The Florida announcer said at one point today "Ternarsky made Schultz look like a pylon." NEWSFLASH: Jeff Schultz is a pylon who does not use his size and spends too much time deflecting the puck in his own net.

NEEDS AT THE TRADE DEADLINE: Yes we need that veteran defenseman if the right deal is there. Oh and please please find a centerman that can WIN FACEOFFS. It showed today and the Caps are just not clicking in the faceoff circle.

THE SKY IS FALLING: No it's not really falling but any of you that think so after today's win need to take a chill pill - go for a walk even if it is snowing up there. I'm in Florida and will be at Bank Atlantic Center when the Caps visit on March 17th. Again it was a mulligan today. A chance for redemption awaits on Tuesday.

You all may have snow to deal with tonight and tomorrow but a Hurricane is coming on Tuesday. Be ready.

The penalty kill is the weakest part of this team, and maybe goaltending as well. I don't know how we can make our penalty kill better. Is it the way we do it? Is it because we can't clear and we don't pressure enough? Someone not named StanleyCup1907 please help me understand why other team's penalty killing is better. How can we improve ours? Why does BB say they are working on it? It doesn't look like they are working on it. What can change our PK?

I'm very scared to have Theo leading us the rest of the way.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 5:27 PM | Report abuse

Yoo let the StanleyCup1907 have his 5 minutes of smack talk. That win leaves the Panthers 13 points behind? LOLOL Nuff said. No need to get fired up by ignorance. It is what it is. Still two more games with them left.

DON CHERRY: For everything Don Cherry may bring to the game of hockey - he can take those comments he made about Ovechkin and stick them clear up his ass. It's only an opinion - from a man who has absolutely no fashion sense nonetheless. Let's face it his comments were about as smart as the suits he chooses everynight. The fact is Ovie celebrates with his teammates when he scores. And even when it's not him scoring and he's out on the ice - he leaps high into the pile of players during the celebration. Like Cherry has any credibility to question a player of Ovechkin's caliber and what he brings to the game. Do yourself a favor Cherry - stick to covering hockey - not a hockey celebrations. Crosby jumped into the glass as well. If you're going to get on Ovie's case - mind as well do it to Crosby and any other player that enjoys celebrating a goal.

Ok I'm off my soapbox. WOO HOO :)

So we're not supposed to respond to trolls? Because they are make-believe figments of our imagination. Okay, I'm composing myself.

I won't make any excuses, nor will I try to put my two cents in on whose fault it is that we lost today. Like adults, let's pull up our bootstraps and trudge on to the next game. While we're at it, if we see a troll, shoot it.

Also, what is up with Laich trying to make all these fancy passes lately? He needs to stop that, that's not what he does.

Well, that sucked. Not just Hoover, but Dyson level of suck. Eh, we move on. The coaching staff & players all know that the penalties are killing us. The fact that the AP write-up on the game includes fans booing the Caps kills me. How quickly the start of last season is forgotten! Were we not last in the league less than 18 months ago?

Dude the past does not count. It is the Past. YESTERDAY does not matter. These boys are so young. They need to understand THE MUST bring their A+++++ best game to EVERYGAME! That is the only thing that PISSES me off about this team. They take crap for granted

Posted by: ERHDC1 | March 1, 2009 6:09 PM | Report abuse

Here's the deal. The Caps could REALLY use Pronger and his 25 bruising minutes per game. He's as good as Chara, and Chara is a big part of Boston's success. Do you want to make the playoffs or compete for the Cup? There's $2.4M of (prorated) LRIR cap space available from Laich (Kronwall is using 244; Neuvy meanwhile is essentially using Johnny's space). After the 2.4, you need 3.825 to fit Pronger. You get that by moving Laich and Mo. Would the Ducks accept that? No. So you add a prospect or a #1 pick. Lord knows the Caps have had enough #1 puicks the last few years. And Pronger fits next year with Laich and Mo gone. I'd miss Laich, but he's not a difference maker. He's a part. We need a difference maker on the blue line.

Posted by: tominfl1 | March 1, 2009 6:09 PM | Report abuse

Jonathan6: "You can't put that first period on Jose?" Why not? He made 13 saves on 17 shots--a 76% save percentage. Neuvy was a little better with an 87% (14 saves on 16 shots. However Anderson had a 94.1% on roughly the same number of shots.

And this is not the first time that another team's goalie advantage--even if it is a mediocre team--frustrates our offense and starts a downward spiral leading to defeats.

Not that there are not off nights for goalies or that Theo is bad. But as someone said, imagine what we could do with a Brodeur in goal. I challenge anyone to name a team that made it to the Cup without a phenomenal goalie. No I would really like to know. Maybe I am wrong. I am not as steeped in hockey history as many of you.Obviously GMGM disagrees because I don't see any move to get an elite goalie by the trade deadline.

Posted by: caraveli | March 1, 2009 6:10 PM | Report abuse

Excuse me, $2.4M LTIR available prorated (once Beagle gets sent back down) from CLARK, not Laich.

Posted by: tominfl1 | March 1, 2009 6:12 PM | Report abuse

caraveli: You can't blame the goalies on all the goals that either deflected off Schultz or where Schultz completely screened the goalie. This wasn't a "goalie stunk" loss but a "whole team stunk" loss.

Posted by: tominfl1 | March 1, 2009 6:15 PM | Report abuse

ERHDC1: I agree. They need to learn that they have to play their very hardest every single game. They seem to have a tough time getting up for games against teams lower than them and on back to back days. And they can't use that excuse that they were tired cause the Panthers were on a back to back as well. I'm sick of their lackadaisical play! I also think Shultz belongs in the AHL, he can't possibly be playing up here every night, he was responsible for 2 goals himself tonight, what a useless player he is.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 6:16 PM | Report abuse

The Caps inconsistency is terrible. This will make for a very short playoff run - unless we can win game 1 of every series. Its a combination of the coaches and team leadership. There does not seem to be anyone in the locker room to make sure everyone has their head screwed on right. The coaches can only do so much - but they should do more. Bruce needs to be coach AND motivator.

Shultz is a waste of space. He set a perfect screen on Neuvirth in the second, then on top of screening the shot, he also deflected it in.

Frustrating, to say the least.

Posted by: joeshred | March 1, 2009 6:23 PM | Report abuse

I really hope Bruce rips them a new one tomorrow. I don't care that they have a game Tuesday. I am a girl who can't skate and I could have played better. I was there I would know.

Posted by: ERHDC1 | March 1, 2009 6:24 PM | Report abuse

Out of the top 30 points leaders, four are Caps: Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin and Green. We are the only team to be represented by 4 players. We've got the goods (other than a stellar goalie) but without consistency I agree with joeshred's assessment that it will be a short playoff run. It will be interesting to see what BB does. I trust him.

Posted by: caraveli | March 1, 2009 6:29 PM | Report abuse

On the plus side, the Bears are winning 4-2 in Providence vs the Baby Bruins at the end of the 2nd. Goals by Mink, CBo, and 2 by Giroux. Giroux is at 43 goals. Bears single-season record (I think) is 51.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | March 1, 2009 6:35 PM | Report abuse

caraveli: Agreed. I feel the Caps and New Jersey are pretty evenly matched as a team but NJ is better b/c they have Marty. Marty is the kind of goalie that if his defense puts him in a tough situation, he can save them. Jose does that sometimes but not many times. He definitly should of had the first goal and the goal by Jay B, the second one was not on him because of Shultz. (Shultz scored twice for the Panthers) A save here, and a save there will make all the difference in the playoffs, I just don't see Jose being the one who can take us far because we can't be winning games like 5-4 all the time in the playoffs, teams will be clamping down on defense and we'll need to learn how to win 2-1. His GAA is 2.90 and his Sv% is under 90. Yeah, he's been playing better but his numbers still aren't good enough. His record is good because we score a lot. I will give up anything for Backstrom. (okay, not anything) He's doing awesome in Minnesota, and that team can't even score.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 6:35 PM | Report abuse

So, this StanleyCup1907 dude is pretty knowledgeable, huh? If Alex was Canadian, Cherry would be sweating him. I think Alex could care less about what some old dude from old school hockey says. I wonder why people stopped watching the 'old school' hockey? Alex is the new breed, get used to it (for all those non Caps fans that spend at least 4 hours on this blog talking smack) Man, I wish I had that much time in the day! As for Semin, he is worth every penny. I guess your Canadian boy Crosby has played a whole season before... oh wait, he gets injured all the time.
And this is why I rarely post anymore. Dumb people posting about nonsense. I love the Caps - win or lose. This year may not be the year, but in the next few years, they should dominate. Get used to it! StanleyCup1907, you are no one... your comments are ignorant and you are posting on another teams blog. Why? Either way, the Caps are here and this town is getting more and more supporters everyday. Like I said, get used to it. The NHL is not the Canadian hockey league. If it wasn't for the US, hockey would be as popular as cricket. I feel Don Cherry fails to realize that.

Posted by: _828 | March 1, 2009 6:39 PM | Report abuse

rachel216: Very insightful assessment. You are so right: "His record is good because we score a lot." I guess that's why he ranks high in wins but not in save percentages. And I hadn't thought of this: "we can't be winning games like 5-4 all the time in the playoffs." He makes some incredible saves but he cannot be counted on. I wish he had been our miracle goalie. I am still rooting for him but I don't see it. The question is what will GMGM do about it?

Posted by: caraveli | March 1, 2009 6:43 PM | Report abuse

I've yet to understand why we have Schultz.

Had to miss the game today in person but saw it on TV and Theo had NO chance on one of the first couple of goals - he completely screened him.

Posted by: wahoo_Mike | March 1, 2009 6:45 PM | Report abuse

I don't think GMGM will do anything about it. that is the problem. And getting us a quick fix is not going to help if the team doesn't play consistently. Yes a goalie can win one or two games. But hockey is a TEAM sport. the whole team needs to learn responsibility. AND someone needs to step up is captain. yes blah blah Clark is our captain. BUT HE IS NOT OUT THERE. You need someone out there to lead. No one has really stepped up. We need a leader on the ice and the boys to take more responsibility for each other.

Posted by: ERHDC1 | March 1, 2009 6:47 PM | Report abuse

So, people are bashing Jose now? Haha, his numbers are high because he is constantly a second half guy. He has played well these past few months and I see McPhee not doing anything to get another goalie. The Caps are 4th place in the NHL for a reason... why would that change?

Posted by: _828 | March 1, 2009 6:47 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, hockey is a team sport but Nicklas Backstrom is a prime example of a goalie carrying his team. His stats are all better than Jose's and the Wild cannot score at all.

Posted by: rachel216 | March 1, 2009 6:52 PM | Report abuse

I just want consistency. Is that so much to ask? From every player and the whole team. I have been a fan since I was 3 mo old. This has always been a problem

Posted by: ERHDC1 | March 1, 2009 6:54 PM | Report abuse

Does anybody think this rumor is true? "Minnesota Wild, who plan to keep Marian Gaborik, may trade Niklas Backstrom, possibly to the Washington Capitals -- Ottawa Sun"

Also, what about an older rumor about Nylander going to the Blues?

Just managed to connect - in the airport right now. I come back to a 6-2 loss :( what the heck... I guess it's one of those stinkers, plus it's a back to back.

However (and this just reading the comments, I didn't see the game) I'm disappointed, once again, in Schultz. I gave him the benefit of the doubt cause so many good people here are defending him... and cause he's young... and cause I'm optimistic that he can improve... but shees, it's been so stressful to see him losing the puck on the boards, not clearing the crease, and just standing there in front of our goalie. Was he really that bad tonight? Can the people defending him speak up?

hey 828 is in the house :)
But man, you come to feed the trolls? Come on :) Don't be a stranger, we miss you.

It's time to have a "report" and a "ignore" button. Please.

We have the best player in hockey, arguably the best 3 out of the top 10 or or so.

We can get whoever we want in trade. GMGM has indicated he knows we need D help but without knowing what deals are being proposed all we can do is trust he's acting in the best interest of the team and fans overall.

Yay mauree you're here! Well, I'm happy you missed it cause it was U-G-L-Y. I'm certainly not a Shultz defender but man, was he horrible today? He screens Jose so that Jose has absolutely ZERO chance to see the puck and then he stands in front of Neuvy and deflects it in, so 2 goals scored by Shultz for the wrong team. He is just a useless body, standing around, not moving. He has size but for the life of me I can't understand why he doesn't use it... it's like "knock somebody over man!"

Also I see that our own Tarik mentions Backstrom's name so maybe your dream will come true after all:

"That said, I do think the Caps will be in the market for a goalie next week. Perhaps not a No. 1 -- though Minnesota's Niklas Backstrom might be available -- at the very least a vet. No. 2 as a backup plan just in case Theodore gets hurt or struggles."

Randinno: I simply said that this stinker was predictable and that sh@it happens. Both are statements of reality which I know are difficult for you to understand because you live in a world where we should play Kronwall over Green and trade Semin.

Too bad the coach doesn't agree with you. Someone tried to bring that up as an excuse and he blew it right out of the water. You're the classic excuse-making fan. You should go work for Ted. How'd your boy Schultzie do today?
