Today's Lineup: Thrashers at Caps (Updated)

Jose Theodore is expected to start in goal as the Caps close out the home portion of their regular season schedule this afternoon against the surging (but still in 13th place) Thrashers. Johan Hedberg, meantime, is expected to start for Atlanta.

Sergei Fedorov is still expected to play, but Coach Bruce Boudreau said he won't know for sure until game time. So all seven defenseman will go out for warmups. If Fedorov plays expect the lineup to resemble yesterday's practice:

Forwards
Ovechkin-Fedorov-Kozlov
Laich-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Fehr
Steckel-Aucoin-Bradley

I won't know the 'D' pairings, or which defenseman is out, until warmups. So check back for an update.

One other note: Boudreau said he expects Donald Brashear (sprained knee) to return on Tuesday.

Update: Okay, so it looks like Fedorov is good to go and that Brian Pothier is the odd defenseman out. So 'D' pairs should be:

Morrisonn-Green
Erskine-Poti
Jurcina-Schultz

Check back later for a postgame wrap-up.

I'd like to see the Capitals take the bull by the horns in their home finale.

Something like 6-0, Caps, with all four lines scoring.

Got to get 4 of 4 points vs. Atlanta in these next two games.

Let's go Caps!!

Hedberg is in?

Haha.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 1:59 PM | Report abuse

Hedberg has won his last five games....

No HaHa.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | April 5, 2009 2:11 PM | Report abuse

He did well against FLA, but he is due for a pelting. Mediocre goalies cannot stay hot for that long, though I should hold my breath. We are talking about the Washington "Make opponent goalie look like Roy" Capitals here.

Ahhhhh, sitting at the Dewars Club enjoying a ice cold beverage.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Anyone know where I can watch this game online?

Posted by: RickyRage | April 5, 2009 2:24 PM | Report abuse

richmondphil: Weren't you the one who said Martin Gerber isn't that good right before we were going to play the Maples Leafs. He played pretty well but the hero of that game was CuJo, so whatever. But anyway, stop saying that stuff! You'll jinx us. Haven't you seen plenty of mediocre goalies beat us already, or shut us out?

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 2:30 PM | Report abuse

Hedberg has been a Cap killer before. Atlanta has been hot lately 11-3 last 14 I believe. So let the inevitable ridiculous "bottom feeder" comments come on having said that.

We need this win to stay ahead of NJ. Not to mention playing Atlanta back to back we need to send a message today.

Richmond Phil, you are the jinx. It's all your fault we didn't catch Boston. :)

Caps 3 - Atlanta 2

Don't kid yourself, all NHL goalies are good.

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | April 5, 2009 2:59 PM | Report abuse

Huh, that's worrying. Isn't the whole purpose of the 'D' rotation to get Pothier as many games as possible? Hope he just needs a rest and hasn't had a setback.

Yeah, buddy, that makes two of us. Remember Boucher? The Caps made him look like Esposito and Roy's love child. Nikolishin, right to the belly. Remember that Philly OT game? People say that no one remembers the ones that lose, but I remember. Oh, I remember.

any stream on the horizon?

Posted by: fnralch | April 5, 2009 3:15 PM | Report abuse

DaveUK

If you saw the end of Man Utd's game a few minutes ago you know what I'm talking about. Sickest finish I've seen all year both of Ronaldo's goals were sublime and Macheda's debut was legendary.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 1:03 PM

Dave,
I've just about calmed down. Not had a finish to a game like that for a while. Makes up for Liverpool ruining my night last night by scoring in the last minute. You're right, that finish was a piece of art, a thing of beauty. And from a 17 year old? Unbelieveable!

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | April 5, 2009 3:16 PM | Report abuse

flash with 3 premium scoring chances so far

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 5, 2009 3:16 PM | Report abuse

Great stop Theo.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:17 PM | Report abuse

Wow zero D there...just skate backwards and give them far too much room. Was that Poti?

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

great

Posted by: Moose33 | April 5, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

Poti huh.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

Phil's at it again making friends huh!

Sloppy defensive zone play so far by the Caps. Atlanta with the clear edge in offensive zone time possession. We can't exit the zone to save our freakin lives

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

soft goal, sorry. Theo wasn't paying attention.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 3:18 PM | Report abuse

hmmm...thinkin theo should have had that

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 5, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

He had the chance to take the body there and just backed off...was a nice move.

DaveUK

That finish was sick, Ronaldo's were top quality as well but for a guy making his debut at 17 no less to have an introduction like that is amazing.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

nice step up by Schultz, he plays so much better after he gets benched

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

PP.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:19 PM | Report abuse

@cs

A lot of it is lack of making the simple play to clear the zone. Always try to tic tac toe it out of our end or they wait for Backstrom or Green or Ovie to carry it out.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

For all the Schultz haters. He is already a +1 today!

Posted by: Wemiss21 | April 5, 2009 3:14 PM | Report abuse

So far the mistakes have been by Green with two bad turnovers trying to overstickhandle and Poti with sloppy clears.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:20 PM | Report abuse

Phil's at it again making friends huh!

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:18 PM

Do they taste salty? A little sweaty perhaps? It's hot out today.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:21 PM | Report abuse

Yeah I've noticed that too Dave. And other teams have noticed as well which is why they pinch in so aggressively

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:21 PM | Report abuse

man our PP is all or nothing, we're either scoring or giving up shorthanded chances

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:23 PM | Report abuse

If we make some adjustments you could catch them pinching that much...they need to run a practice drill just chipping pucks out of our zone. That or the nice sand wedge lob shot. Sometimes guys don't know they have as much time as they do as well...maybe a lack of communication contributes to those.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:24 PM | Report abuse

There we go, Backstrom will clear it.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

only one finishing checks out there so far is Erskine.

I wonder if sometimes the worst thing for this team is to get an early lead, they get immediately complacent, no sense of urgency.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:25 PM | Report abuse

That was a good penalty there...he had to maul Kozlov he would've been in.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

OK BOYS PPG RIGHT HERE!!!!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 5, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

Wow, another power play. Gotta get one this time.

Posted by: Wemiss21 | April 5, 2009 3:26 PM | Report abuse

I do agree that we REALLY need to work on our zone clearance. Too often we fail to make the simple play, and we give up to many turnovers in our own zone for my taste.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 5, 2009 3:28 PM | Report abuse

Geez that was a great look. Wasn't flat on the ice though.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:28 PM | Report abuse

its a little depressing to see "awful" teams having such an easy time entering our zone and then controling the puck for so long. Man the playoffs are a whole different ballgame when it comes to offensive zone pressure and forecheck

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:30 PM | Report abuse

Not a good sign our PP didn't Pot one there.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:32 PM | Report abuse

only 6 shots, that's pathetic!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Obviously the problem with our PP is that Brashear is still out of the lineup.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:33 PM | Report abuse

@phil

I almost think with Ovie coming down the slot like that having one of our guys skating towards the front isn't necessary. You don't need a screen from that range.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:33 PM | Report abuse

only 6 shots, that's pathetic!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 3:33 PM | Report abuse

Semin brilliant on the PK.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:40 PM | Report abuse

6shots, 3 hits vs one of the worst teams in hockey-- not what you call "gearing up for the playoffs"

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:41 PM | Report abuse

Poti hasn't played well in 6 weeks.

Posted by: cstanton1 | April 5, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

That should be interference unless the puck was right there...although it won't get called in the playoffs. Guess it drew a penalty though.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 3:42 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin is cleaning house.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:43 PM | Report abuse

everyone always gets mad at ovie's legal hits.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 3:43 PM |

well, the first one was a bit dirty.

the hit on Reasoner was clean.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:45 PM | Report abuse

I am just happy Ovechkin has stopped leaving his feet and doing those borderline charges.

He has still done it a few times this year (see hit on Zherdev and first Pitts game against Malkin), but for the most part he takes the body cleanly.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:48 PM | Report abuse

That's why I said legal hits. :) Ovie is just playing the game. But if they want to get mad, that's fine by me, cause that means a PP for us, as long as they don't hurt OV.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 3:49 PM | Report abuse

I could'nt see the puck when ovie laid that questionable hit, but the puck was going that way???

Maybe this Ovie's getting the superstar benefit of the doubt? Its not like he is an occasional hitter, hitting is a big part of his game. I like it!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | April 5, 2009 3:50 PM | Report abuse

I thought the first hit should have been interference myself.

The hit on Reasoner was legal, he had the puck.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:53 PM | Report abuse

My thrasher friend is saying the hit on Reasoner was pretty high.

DVR's/TiVo's..confirm/deny?

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 3:55 PM | Report abuse

@ richmondphil

I am/was totally calm. I just made a statement that all NHL goalies were talented/good. I was just trying to "warn" you about celebrating a little premature that Hedberg was in net for the Thrash. "HaHa"...if that was the intent of your comment. If not.....what ever...peace-out!

Posted by: Capsfannmiss | April 5, 2009 3:58 PM | Report abuse

great pass ovie. ICK.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:03 PM | Report abuse

I'll throw Ovie under the bus there. Terrible cross ice pass just too much risk.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:03 PM | Report abuse

No, as I stated Moose actually scares me.

The "haha" was intended to point out my amusement that we get to play ol Mooser. There was no premature celebration. But it's not like he is a good goalie or anything. He is just one of those Caps Killers.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:03 PM | Report abuse

don't blow our pp guys...

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:08 PM | Report abuse

7 shots on goal... WOW. THis is seriously pathetic.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:09 PM | Report abuse

I like the idea Ovie...but if Juice is going to miss the net you might as well take it yourself.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:14 PM | Report abuse

Hedburg hasn't touched the puck for 20 minutes. 8 shots..

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:15 PM | Report abuse

Gold Coin.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:16 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:16 PM | Report abuse

Awesome Aucoin! Now let's take the game over and play Caps hockey.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:16 PM | Report abuse

Now that was a pretty feed wow Aucoin. HOnestly though the pass from Semin to set that up was VERY risky.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:15 PM

It seems whoever said above our PP is all or nothing is spot on. It might've been you.

We love those high-risk passes. They will either work or not at all.

But in the end, we have the highest PP percent in the league, so the all or nothing approach does work.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:17 PM | Report abuse

We did have a guy on the other point, didn't see him as the play was developing. Sometimes you have to make the skip pass to get that tap tap down low. Worked out this time.

Ovie is angry he flubbed that one. He might start to heat up here and realize we need to wake up and take this game over.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin is now officially 50+/50.

Jesus Christ.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:19 PM | Report abuse

Wow this is not the kind of hockey I like to be playing going into the playoffs. I'm not panicking but this is the worst hockey we have played all year and for the longest stretch I can remember. I sure do hope we can flip that switch.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:21 PM | Report abuse

Ovechkin should've just put on the jets there.

Looks like he fumbled the puck, or he was tired.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Shoot the puck Semin. He has a great one use it!

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:22 PM | Report abuse

Where have these thrashers been all season?
Or are we just making their defense look like detroits? They're all over our guys. THey look like we did a few months ago.

Posted by: oo7 | April 5, 2009 4:26 PM | Report abuse

Thrashers are really bothering us, we can't get any shots off... it kinda worries me that we're playing like this when there is only 3 games to go before playoffs...

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:26 PM | Report abuse

Ovie is angry he flubbed that one. He might start to heat up here and realize we need to wake up and take this game over.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:19 PM |

People with the ATL feed definetely heard Ovechkin yell "F___" pretty distinctly.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:27 PM | Report abuse

I think they should sit Nylander for the rest of the season. See if the blank playoff slate helps him out. If he's still worthless after the first game or two, sit him. Sorry, dude, you were great once, but you're $#it now and you're getting in the way.

Get out of my head dave.

creep.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

thanks deadskin, now i can watch this embarrassment instead of listening to it.

Posted by: Moose33 | April 5, 2009 4:34 PM | Report abuse

BB needs to get them ready to play in the 3rd...I want to see one of those 25-3 sog periods that we just dominate for a 5-3 win. Although it would probably be a 5-4 just because we can't help it.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | April 5, 2009 4:35 PM | Report abuse

Backstrom backed into the one on that last goal along with Green. He's played no better than anyone else. Ovechkin has played the best, with the only exception being that DUMB pass; which he should have remembered Fedorov doing in OT.
Erskine has looked good.
Nylander looks the worst.

Posted by: oo7 | April 5, 2009 4:36 PM | Report abuse

Poti needs to use his body and not just to dry hump the guy scoring the goal.

Posted by: oo7 | April 5, 2009 4:36 PM | Report abuse

Theo needs to have better games for us to win in the playoffs...he isn't seeing the puck very well today.

Posted by: patrone | April 5, 2009 4:37 PM | Report abuse

Maybe they'll wake up in the 3rd..
why can't Jose ever be that "x factor" for us?

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:38 PM | Report abuse

It's our D that's killing us. Every back pass is hitting a stick or a skate, every outlet pass gets intercepted or tipped. This is what our team is about, quick outs and down the ice. If we can't get that going we're dead in the water. Forwards are gone so if D mess up the outlet we're in trouble and it's shown.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 5, 2009 4:39 PM | Report abuse

I hope the Caps start playing well before the playoffs, or...

Posted by: FancyDan | April 5, 2009 4:39 PM | Report abuse

One play makes Backstrom like everyone else?

He's been the only glimmer of hope I've seen this game, Ovie aside.

And I've seen Erskine muff up a clear at least twice. Though I appreciate his physical effort.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

rachel, i think jose has played really well for the 2nd half of the season and even today he's made some really good saves so i don't think he's the problem. we gotta stop turning the puck over.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 5, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

Must have at least 18 shots in the 3rd.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:40 PM | Report abuse

pokerface1208: I agree that Jose has played better in the 2nd half of the season, but he could've stopped the 1st and 3rd goal. It seems he just lost sight of the puck on both of those goals.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:42 PM | Report abuse

Nylander looks the worst.

Posted by: oo7

That can be said for every game. (Since Schultz has been playing a little better.)

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:44 PM | Report abuse

No not one play, just the lack of intensity. Drive. Motivation. He looks as bored as the others. Yes, Erskine missed a clear or two, but he's showed the only physical fire I've seen thus far. Ovie aside, as usual. Poti was literally dry humping the goal scorer.

Posted by: oo7 | April 5, 2009 4:44 PM | Report abuse

I don't know about the 1st one.

I am sure he regrets letting that 3rd one in.

I've got to add Aucoin to that short list. Though he is the call-up and has something to prove. I just wish it wasn't like that.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:45 PM | Report abuse

Poti let him get to the inside but I think Theo still had a shot at it, but whatever.

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 4:57 PM | Report abuse

Holy crud! The blind squirrel found the nut!

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 5, 2009 4:57 PM | Report abuse

I hate to tell you "hope they play better" people but this team peaked too soon. They believe what they read in the papers and online and truly think that they are the princes of the city. I want them to win as much as anyone else but a hockey team cannot simply change their style of play two weeks from now.

Their motivation is almost non-existent, they are sloppy, there is no intensity, and the only time that they score is on the power play if then.

This is just killing me but I am afraid that we will be watching baseball soon.

Posted by: MKadyman | April 5, 2009 4:58 PM | Report abuse

two of our goals are even strength.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 4:59 PM | Report abuse

dude, can we stop with the blind between the legs, just dump in it for the love of god...Aucoin should have buried that

Posted by: Moose33 | April 5, 2009 5:00 PM | Report abuse

Aucoin should not have missed that wide open net, but I can't get mad at him cuz he's got a goal. I'd be mad if that was Fehr.

yes, fehr!

Posted by: Moose33 | April 5, 2009 5:01 PM | Report abuse

mkadyman, couldn't disagree with you more. respectfully of course. i don't think we've peaked at all. i think this team can accomplish a lot more than it already has. in my mind they haven't accomplished anything really but for the most part they are very consistent and "on" but for the past 2-3 they've been very blah.

Posted by: pokerface1208 | April 5, 2009 5:02 PM | Report abuse

No, MKadyman, what you're seeing now is the Caps showing some intensity. Forecheck, rob, steal, grind, rush, shoot, score. Now we're talking. Just goes to show what this team can do when they actually LISTEN to the coach.

Posted by: oo7 | April 5, 2009 5:02 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 5:04 PM | Report abuse

Well something we have certainly been lacking lately is secondary scoring and Flash, Fehr AND Nyls have all scored! If it were July Bob Ryan would be calling for a snow storm!

It must be driving Bruce absolutely bonkers. Stop playing like its a video game and do what made us successful for 80% of the season. They got so far ahead that they got comfortable and a little cocky.

MKadyman: Do you love it now?! Intensity and motivation!!!!! GO CAPS!!

Posted by: rachel216 | April 5, 2009 5:11 PM | Report abuse

Aucoin ripped it off, but he didn't finesse anything.

It started with Aucoin, but in this case it wasn't all Aucion. Flash and Semin handled that puck like a mini-nuke and found the safety net.

Posted by: bajgirl | April 5, 2009 5:15 PM | Report abuse

When does Aucoin's contract end?

I must admit, I was sad to see Laing go down, but Aucoin is fire.

Posted by: richmondphil | April 5, 2009 5:16 PM | Report abuse

See, THIS is how they got to where they are. They forecheck relentlessly and generate so many quality scoring chances that the other team goes into wide spread panic mode. THey make mistakes, do pirouettes, and then take an inevitable penalty. 1st place PP then kicks into gear. Exactly what the coach tells them is what they should do. If they play this way, they'll be fine, as long as they remember they have to play even harder against playoff teams than they did in the 3rd against lowly Atlanta.

So far this game 10 for 13, from TSN. At a very young age, becoming an excellent well rounded player!

Posted by: FancyDan | April 5, 2009 5:32 PM | Report abuse

So...my 5-4 prediction was on the money with Theo's gaffe until they had to bury an empty netter. Seriously let's badmouth Nylander and praise Aucoin more it worked like a charm. Ovie should have had a couple but that was a good 3rd period. I hope we play 60 minutes like we do 20 sometimes come playoffs.
