Today's Lineup

Brent Johnson will start in goal today at Wachovia Center, where the Caps are going for a season-best sixth straight win. Alexander Semin (back) did not make the trip to Philly, but it looks like Mike Green (shoulder) will suit up.

Here are the expected forward combos:

Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Laich-Fehr
Giroux-Nylander-Gordon
Brashear-Steckel-Bradley

The defensive pairs are subject to change since Tyler Sloan (leg) is a game-time decision.

Go Caps!!! I am stuck at stupid work and I cant watch the game :( Hopefully I can get the radio broadcast on the internet somewhere.

What happened to Nyls with Flash and Fehr? That line was really clicking.

Posted by: ChrisAm | December 20, 2008 11:35 AM | Report abuse

I'm a little worried about Green. I'm sure Flyers are aware of his injury, and I wouldn't put it past them to go after Greenie.

Hopefully this is just me being too paranoid, and said situation will not be the case.

I'm at work too. Can someone post a link where I can watch the game online.

Go Caps!

From previous "Not a lot of like..." thread:
I hate whoever we play next. But old Patrick division foes are more fun to hate. I root for anyone who plays the Rangers, the Isles, the Flyers, or the Pens, I root for anyone playing Carolina, Florida, Atlanta or Tampa too. It's a tossup for me; who I hate more. Pens, Flyers? I hate `em the same, which is intensely, bitterly, eternally. Caps 4 Flyers 3. Kill them. (Figuratively. It's just a silly game on skates played with a "puck", afterall.) KILL THEM!!!

Posted by: kevbnyc | December 20, 2008 11:40 AM | Report abuse

I have same question as Chrisam: I like the Flash Hylander combo. Can't remember if Fehr was in the mix the times I liked it, but think so.

Tarik? what's your trake?

Imagine all the people chatting on line about --

Nylander
Kozo
Feds
JT
Pothier and
JT

If we unloaded their salaries -- don't think for a moment GMGM is salivating over this scenario. Almost ready for the Dance just need another 2 years.

Patience grasshoppers!

Dr Update: Green to be in and out in and out in and out of the lineup the next 45 days.

@ Puckguru-
You're right. I wasn't there at The Phone Booth. I didn't need to be. I saw all that mattered. NO ONE CAME TO SASHA'S AID. A good 10 seconds after the incident, OV RELUCTANTLY skated by and PUSHED somebody. Big deal. That certainly doesn't impress me.

OK...I want to start by saying that normally, I agree with, and enjoy 99.9% of your posts. You bring a true depth of knowledge to the board with what you have to say. BUT....with this instance, you are as WRONG as wrong can be. And the comments about not being there are flat out ignorant.

I was there. YOU didn't and and simply COULDN'T have seen what was happening on the ice or on the benches. When Brash tried to take on Tkachuck, Tkachuck skated away on to the bench. Brash was skating towards him at center ice and flinging the arms to drop the gloves. While this was happening, the action and the puck were at the other end of the ice, so there was no TV view of this. (Assuming you even watched). Brash then went to the bench, did not take a seat and was screaming at the Blues bench. I know you say that's what girls do, but he was trying to call out the BLUES manhood and find a partner. No one took him up on that. Why? Because they are sissies.

Next shift...oh about 30 seconds after Brash went off, he came back onto the ice and flat crushed a guy into the back wall. Result? Brash stood over him, yelled at him and again, he skated back to the Blues bench.

You can't even begin to get a feel for what was happening on the ice and the benches if you weren't in the building. TV did not capture everything that was going on, and Joe B wasn't mentioning 3/4 of it. (I watched the replay)

As for the 10 seconds it took OV to skate over? That is flat out wrong, wrong, wrong. He went after Backes the second the hit was delivered and crushed him into the boards. 10 seconds?? Come on!

I think it says more about the Blues and how they view their own player that they wouldn't stand up for him or defend him. It appeared, to a man, that they were saying, "hey..we dont agree with what that idiot just did, so don't kick my tail to get even. Sorry." Why else did every player back down from Brashier???? Because the Blues are gutless and don't agree with the way Backes played.

The old saying, "it takes two to tango" is correct in this regard. What were the Caps players going to do. Follow them onto the bench and start throwing punches?

Your perception of what happened is 100% incorrect and to insult the "manhood" of the Capitals players is wrong.

I'm stunned that someone with your knowledge of the sport, the unwritten codes it contains, would stoop to such a swarmy level to defame and insult the very players that you purport to be a fan of.

Posted by: lamplighter1 | December 20, 2008 12:01 PM | Report abuse

@ puckguru-

I forgot to address the use of "reluctant" to describe OV skating in to defend Semin. But I think you get my point.

Vamp, I'll provide occasional updates, but you can get legal radio streams if you've got a pair of headphones. Look up WFED, or bust out your AM radio and look up 1500 or 820.

Whose bright idea was it to have this game so early? I was sleeping in, and I almost missed the start of the game! Yikes!

I have headphones, but I work at a bank as a Teller, so I don't think that would be appreciated...

I'm waiting until my manager is free to go ahead and see if the online stream coming from my computer will be ok. The crappy radio we have here doesn't like AM stations for whatever reason. Quite frustrating, I want my Caps fix.

Lupul scores at 4:29 on a slapshot from right around the left faceoff circle.

Flyers 1-0 with 15:31 remaining in the 1st.

Posted by: isaacc7 | December 20, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

@ Greg

I totally wish it was, we used to have great hours on Saturdays (9-12), then PNC decided to extend them until 4 back in May. Who scheduled this game anyways? I should be enjoying the Caps while on my winter break from classes. Instead I'm in a dull bank reading updates (for which I am grateful)

Posted by: TheVampireCorndog | December 20, 2008 1:30 PM | Report abuse

Nitty worries me. I saw him alot when he was in the minors. He was one of those guys who would be very good or very bad. He appears to be on his game today. We'll have to hope the Caps can rattle him somehow.

As usual, there's no one even close to the crease during a Caps' power play. Heck, there's nobody even in the same zip code. Obviously, that's the area where REAL MEN reside. That's the area where sticks and elbows are flyin'. Hmmm.
Now, WATCH THE DIFFERENCE when the Flyers eventually get a power play. They'll give Johnson "The Blues." Haha. Get it?

Posted by: Puckguru | December 20, 2008 1:35 PM | Report abuse

Notice how the Flyers fans are booing every time Ovi touches the puck? Don't they know he feeds off that stuff? Keep booing folks, you'll just fire him up even more...if that's possible.

Terrible Johnny on the first two, Green is being careless all game and he finally cost us the 3rd. Darn it. This on what was one of the best performance on offense by the Caps.

Unless something happens early in the 3rd period, this game is gone. Flyers aren't push-overs.

On a positive note I think we're playing pretty good, and we're only losing cause of individual mistakes.

This is the most frustrating kind of game. Just a few mistakes have doomed this team, otherwise they have totally outplayed the Flyers... This game really highlights how we need a real goaltender, Johnson is a good backup, but he's never been a #1.

Thanks mauree

Yeah, whats the word on Poti? Maybe thats why Green is getting all that T.O.I if they are down another d-man. He just needs to be carefull with the puck.

This group has been making one great comeback after another all year. I know they have it in them to do it again. Isn't that old addage "worst lead in hockey is a THREE goal lead"?

UNLEASH THE FURRY!!!!!

Carolina and Boston are tied at 1 through 2, hopefully Boston can do us a favor and let us gain 2 points on them (or prevent them from catching up if the 3rd doesn't go our way).

of all goddamn games

Are we really ready to turn this over to Johnson and Theodore? This is embarassing. If neither of them can step up in a big game, what's the point. They are both horribly soft. This is how they will play in the playoffs....

And, we have two vet goalies, what's the upside? None. Varlamov has an upside and I could understand him giving up goals because I know he'll get better.

Bring back Varlamov.

I told you guys before that our goaltending is the weak link in the team. People replied saying that no, Johnson and Jose will be fine, and today's game is proof that even though the boys played an outstanding game, they got 7 goals scored on them!!!
