Tonight's Lines

Based on what they looked like in warm ups the Capitals lines are the same as this morning. Jose Theodore will start in net, while Chris Clark is a healthy scratch for the second-straight game. The Caps are still without Boyd Gordon, Tom Poti and Shaone Morrisonn.

Tim Thomas is the starting goaltender for the Bruins and you can check out their probable lines here.

Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov
Fleischmann-Fedorov-Semin
Laich-Nylander-Fehr
Brashear-Steckel-Bradley

Defense
Erskine-Green
Schultz-Jurcina
Alzner-Helmer

From previous Thread.....just heard on the radio that OV is wearing the "C" tonight....can anyone confirm or deny?

Can't help you, RichC3.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 6:57 PM | Report abuse

Nope, just saw on CSN, wearing the A.

Posted by: katzistan | January 17, 2009 6:59 PM | Report abuse

Ok, should I go with the Batemans Autumn Fall Ale or the Schofferhofer Wheatbeer? Its tough, its really tough.

Man Utd won to go top of the Premier League (last minute winner too!) and I'm feeling good for the Caps to claim a huge 2 points tonight.

As for the C. I said last season Ovie is the natural leader of this team and should be wearing the C. If the Capt is injured you can make a claim for not giving the C to anyone else. If he's not making the team, then I think there is no reason not to give it to Ovie.

LET'S GO CAPS!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 17, 2009 7:07 PM | Report abuse

should be an exciting game.

Posted by: richmondphil | January 17, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

C'mon Power play!

_stevo, you're probably at the game, but thanks for sticking up for Brads in my absence! :-D

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 7:11 PM | Report abuse

I remember not so long ago we were forced to dump into the zone on the PP, seemed nobody could carry it in. Now I wish we would dump more.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 7:13 PM | Report abuse

It seems that anyone who plays with Nyls has no idea what he is going to do. Chemistry seems to be an issue, especially entering the zone on the rush.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 7:15 PM | Report abuse

Hell, 5th best on the PP aint so bad though!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 7:17 PM | Report abuse

Come on you Reds!

Decent start but Thomas is seeing everything that fired his way so far.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 17, 2009 7:17 PM | Report abuse

that Juice/Schultz combo is going to be interesting

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 7:20 PM | Report abuse

why did schultz cover the same man jurcina was, and almost give krejci a breakaway?

Posted by: richmondphil | January 17, 2009 7:22 PM | Report abuse

ooooh, close Vic, close.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 17, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

@richmondphil

my observation EXACTLY, kinda scary...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 7:25 PM | Report abuse

holy erskine!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

Great SH shift from Laich and Semin then. Good work boys.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 17, 2009 7:33 PM | Report abuse

OK, THIS JUST IN...OV HAS A SHADOW!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

as much as some people complain about Erskine....we need a defensemen on our team like him....that last bruins powerplay was why i like him he is a tough defender and isnt afraid to knock someone in the mouth. we need someone who can clear that crease area for our goalies

Posted by: capsfan5252 | January 17, 2009 7:38 PM | Report abuse

capsfan5252, I was one of the Erskine-detractors. But you're right. He does perform some much needed duties.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

I think the D is looking VERY strong. I would have liked to have seen Theo be tested a little more. A little.

Posted by: kevbnyc | January 17, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

Ok so I guessing when Erskine was last concussed the conversation went like this:

Trainer: "Hey Coach, I think John's concussed. He doesn't know who he is"

Boudreau: "Tell him he's Nick Lindstrom"

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 17, 2009 7:47 PM | Report abuse

The Pens have a new back-up goalie. The Edmonton Oilers gave them Garon for Sabourin, an AHL forward and a pick.

Giroux has tied Hull's AHL record for consecutive goal-games. He's also one goal short of a hat trick with 40 left to play. The Bears are up 2-0 at the end of the first. Cheezer is in net. Neuvirth is backing him up. (I think Varlamov is sick)

Is anyone more excited than me about the beginning of the stretch run?

The last 21 games of the season the Caps schedule includes:

13 games against division foe

3 against Florida
3 against carolina (2 at home)

1 against the Bruins (A)
1 against the Penguins (H)
1 against the Flyers (A)
1 against the Predators (A)
1 against the Sabers (H)

Seems like a dead moment in comments:

If the Bruin guy had pulled his left leg back instead of jumping sideways to try and avoid the Ovie hit he could've gotten a hyperextension or tear upon impact.
(voice of experience)

Ovie needs to lead with his hip on that.

Posted by: austinsteve | January 17, 2009 8:49 PM | Report abuse

C'mon Brooks, connect on that!

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 8:55 PM | Report abuse

Does anyone have an idea about how difficult it would be to get three tickets to a future game? Just about every game I have watched of late on TV, Joe B noted it as being sold out. I want to get tickets to take my two kids, but it seems like I would have to plan it weeks in advance.

All these sold out games are well deserved for Uncle Ted, BTW.

Posted by: TimDz | January 17, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

Let's go PP!!!

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 17, 2009 8:58 PM | Report abuse

TimDz, I guess try calling the Caps ticket folks. They'd be able to help you. I guess repost your question after the game or sometime tomorrow when the STHs are back on; they might know something, too.

As a business major, I understand that there is sometimes a need to trade players for the betterment of the club. But I hope we never trade that guy. He's sick (to quote Ovie).
And that was a good recovery by Juice on that Bruins chance.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 9:09 PM | Report abuse

danapa, atdhe.net has the games.

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 9:16 PM | Report abuse

It was a good rcovery by Juice but it was his error(s) that created the Bruins chance in the first place.

Posted by: capsfan5252 | January 17, 2009 9:20 PM | Report abuse

Best all around game from our boys I've seen in a while. With D like that we'll go deep in the postseason.

Posted by: kevbnyc | January 17, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

Huge Win!!!! Good job guys

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 17, 2009 9:21 PM | Report abuse

quality win over a quality opponent. Wins like this are what gets you the cup.

Posted by: ergoroc | January 17, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Thats why Erskine is hustlin', he got mouths to feed!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 9:22 PM | Report abuse

Who says we can't play tight D and depend on Theo for some solid goaltending. I know he didn't face a high volume of shots but he made some key stops, the late glove save on Chara's blast comes to mind. Finally Semin trusts his shot to just let it fly and not try to curl and drag around everyone. Great win, to think Ovie probably should've had a goal or two as well and we still downed them. Now we gotta take care of Isles and Sens this week so we can go into the break on a roll!

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | January 17, 2009 9:23 PM | Report abuse

Best play of Alzner's night

Fedorov looked horrible

Posted by: gtydings | January 17, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Great win lads, winning in regulation was huge. Maybe, just maybe, we can catch em!

JMU,
Of course I knew that's what you meant by "recovery". My point was if he plays the puck correctly in the first place he doesn't have to worry about recovering.

There again, if he doesn't miss-handle the puck then play a weak pass, the play would probably not have developed he way it did and may not have lead to Sasha's goal.

Perhaps Juice had it all planned out and is some kid of genius.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 17, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

Fans, as we discuss this game over the next few days, lets give credit where its due. Great TEAM effort, but recognize the game that Theodore, Alzner, Erskine and Nylander had. ALL of them played major roles in this victory and have be crapped on by many here!!!

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 9:26 PM | Report abuse

Bears update: Game going into OT. Tied 3-3 at the end of regulation. Phantoms coach having a minor meltdown.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Feds was pretty invisable.

Remember guys, they are a quality team but they were also missing Kessel, Lucic, etc.

Still, Thomas/Chara were there.

Posted by: DaveUKCapsFan | January 17, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

DaveUK, He might be a genius. You never know.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

wtf_e_fehr

I agree 100%. I still have some reservation on Erskine, but I liked how he contributed to offense as well with a couple of dangerous shots.

I don't think Fed was all that bad... and he'll pick up his game. What I would have liked more (but its nitpicking for such a beautiful game) is Brash letting Chara know not to get too confident with Ovie.

Posted by: mauree | January 17, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

I've told my wife numerous times how good Erskine in playing since his return. They were definetly missing that physical play on the blueline.

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 17, 2009 9:31 PM | Report abuse

Mtl/Ott 4-4 after 60 minutes. I think I'll stay for OT/SO. We could do with the Sens doing us a favour here.

Mtl start the OT with 1:40 left of PP.

How often do they have two non-Canadian teams playing each other on Hockey Night in Canada? (Thats right folks, I typed it out because in the U S of A....HNIC means something completely different)

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

Habs/Sens going to the skill comp.

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 17, 2009 9:42 PM | Report abuse

Bears shootout status: Going to seventh round. Aucoin & Bouchard both scored for Hershey in the first 5.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 9:43 PM | Report abuse

Phantoms win in the 7th round of the shootout. Bears only two shootout losses for the season both came from Philly.

Posted by: jmu_capsgirl | January 17, 2009 9:44 PM | Report abuse

I know it's disappointing for us when Ovie doesn't score, but the best teams are going to be effective at shutting him down while playing their game. (Hey, did you know that Zdeno Chara is 6'7"?)

And yet we can win great games like tonight's because we have a deep offense and we're building our secondary scoring. I still think the Ovechkin-Backstrom-Kozlov line is the way to go. And with Erskine back, Alzner getting comfortable, and Theodore on a hot streak, we may just be able to stay in there...

I believe Chara is 6'9". And add 3" or 4" to that with the skate. I was at the last BB game at Verizon and a Caps fan next to me yells "You suck Chara, go back to the circus. Pretty funny at the time.

Posted by: ludeman95 | January 17, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | January 17, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Chara isn't 6'7", he's 6'9"

Posted by: nhcaps | January 17, 2009 9:54 PM | Report abuse

Theo and Semin the MVP's.

Fedorov-Fleischmann-Semin looked great out there as always, +1's across the board.

Posted by: DrAdamson | January 17, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

Yes, 6'9", my typo.

Posted by: jen-s | January 17, 2009 10:03 PM | Report abuse

I think Nylander had one of his better games. I think Koz had a solid game. Erskine has been that "nasty" link we have been missing.Theo is now our #1 goalie IMOA

The Bruins "people" are already circling the calendar in 10 days for a "revenge" game, and not blamming but are certainly pointing out the were without 6 regulars tonight.

Was a great win in a playoff type of game!

Great win

Semin: "I told you! I told you I didn't like how Chara was tall! I said I liked how Schultz was tall better!"
Bradley looks up over his menu. "I don't know."
Ovechkin: "Me neither. Sasha?"
Semin: "What? Oh. I want the bakes beans."
Fedorov: "You can't order that. Baked beans are from Boston."
Semin: "From Boston? Really? OK...I order cheese steak sub."
Fedorov: "No. Not that either."
Semin: "Cheese steak sub is from Boston?"
Feds: "It's from Philadelphia."
Semin: "Oh." He glances back at menu. "Is Hamburg an NHL franchise?"
Fedorov: "No, Hamburg is in Germany. It's in the German League."
Semin: "Good! Then I get hamburger!"
Bradley: "Who's turn is it to pay the tip today?"
Green: "It's Ovie's. It's Ovie's turn for the tip."
Ovechkin: "I already give tip. I tell waitress - don't put head down, or I will run you like Malkin."

Jeez, that was a fun game to watch!

So who's the guy wearing #4 out there? And #92? And #60? These guys really stepped it up recently. Maybe all those AHLers rotating it on through gave them a wake-up call.

Chara is a beast out there, though. I was impressed with him a few years ago, but he keeps getting better and better.

that was an awesome game!
tomflin, it's coming along! That was funny.
Boston's missing players gave us an advantage. The next game is gonna be even better.
Wow. This team is getting scary. I wish they were playing the sharks now.

I say us. And we. I told my gf (who only likes the Flyers because she grew up here in Philly, not because she knows or cares anything about hockey(she calls Ovechkin, Overchicken with no irony at all)), "We're going to win the Stanley Cup." and she's like, "Who's this 'we'?" And I said, "Me and my team." Fan is short for fanatic.

Hello All!

Just got back from the game and of course, celebrating a great win. The Bs were missing key players to injury (of which as a fan, I wanted to see play) like Sturm and Kessel to name a few, but we did too recently as well and we stepped up and kept winning (no excuses Boston fans). Anyway, the atmosphere at VC was great and I'm confident the boys can take them again in 10 days. We looked good, real good!

We all know Sasha has a world-class wrist shot but it was great to see him show his fast ball. And yes, Erskine WAY deserved his 2nd star props.

Great win again boys!
