wonder if fehr will be in front of the net on the PP?

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 5, 2009 7:03 PM | Report abuse

also wonder what they are going to do with Clark? Why isnt Alzner here? Even Brooks Laich is talkin about Fehr. He is in the local spotlight!!!

Posted by: capsfan387 | February 5, 2009 7:12 PM | Report abuse

we are doing what San Jose did a few years ago. Load up on a ton of young goalie prospects and go with the best one.

They had Toskala, Nabokov, and Kiprusoff all in their system.

lazy play by green there...

Posted by: wtf_e_fehr | February 5, 2009 7:14 PM | Report abuse

Alex S looks fired up tonight...maybe score 3 goals...

Posted by: MReilly9 | February 5, 2009 7:18 PM | Report abuse

Toskala was with San Jose two years ago, and went to the Leafs before the 07-08 season

Posted by: abuddy2004 | February 5, 2009 7:26 PM | Report abuse

Morrison sure has dropped off from last year. He won't be back next year.

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 5, 2009 7:27 PM | Report abuse

@abuddy

what is your point? i am well aware of who Toskala plays for. Kiprusoff plays for the Flames.
the fact is they were all in their system at the same time??

why did schultz screen theo on that goal?

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 7:28 PM | Report abuse

@phil

because the kings guy wasnt doing a good enough job

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 5, 2009 7:31 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: larisa83 | February 5, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

phil - i misread your comment, thinking you said we were like SJ one year ago, and pulling my random leafs knowledge out of my hurting brain was just saying it was two years ago he went to the leafs.

Posted by: abuddy2004 | February 5, 2009 7:32 PM | Report abuse

koken thinks the kings think green sucks on defense.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 7:34 PM | Report abuse

all good.
Out of the three, it looks like Toskala is the worst though, haha.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 7:35 PM | Report abuse

Kopitar is so good and only gets paid like 1.5 for 5 years.

jesus.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 7:36 PM | Report abuse

maybe, but I'm loyal to my leafs even if they tend to try to be the worst team in their conference every year...but not nearly as loyal as I am to my hometown caps.

Posted by: abuddy2004 | February 5, 2009 7:37 PM | Report abuse

really sloppy period, esp that pp. These boys need a wake up in the locker room

Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | February 5, 2009 7:42 PM | Report abuse

Wow, that was a terrible power play. Why doesn't this team take ALL opponents seriously? They don't seem to care... BTW, how many times have we taken a delay of game call this year. It seems to be happening a lot more often than usual...

I am watching it now with now issues except the performance of some crappy caps

Posted by: ewwsombra | February 5, 2009 7:44 PM | Report abuse

Offensive zone penalties by Steckel in consecutive games = scratch next game.

What a stupid way to end up with a 5 on 3 penalty kill - and a goal against - offensive zone trip followed by puck over the glass for a delay of game.

Posted by: rw-c | February 5, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse

It reminds me of the blow out start against the sens, followed by a terrible remainder. this time they don't have that huge cushion...just the relaxed attitude after the early goal!

This show why they have to pick up a gritty leader type that takes no prisoners.

Posted by: ewwsombra | February 5, 2009 7:53 PM | Report abuse

Theo played great in the 1st. Unfortunately, he was let down by several guys in front of him. Hopefully, Bruce makes a couple of adjustments because right now the Kings are taking it to us.

Posted by: tmac2yao | February 5, 2009 7:55 PM | Report abuse

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:02 PM | Report abuse

What in the hell did they work on when they "worked" on the PP. That is 2 shorties in 2 games. Come on.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | February 5, 2009 8:03 PM | Report abuse

thank you green.

Posted by: abuddy2004 | February 5, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

teams will never learn. don't leave green open.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

I guess as long as you can rack up the PP goals, the short-handed goals don't matter.

Posted by: FusilliJerry1 | February 5, 2009 8:04 PM | Report abuse

well, i would say it does matter a little.

it would be tied instead of 3-2.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:06 PM | Report abuse

it's a wild game...

Posted by: NatyBG | February 5, 2009 8:09 PM | Report abuse

Wow, big save from Theo, 3 goal lead before halfway through would be ugly.

Posted by: moondue8 | February 5, 2009 8:16 PM | Report abuse

talk about stinking out the joint!!! what an embarrasing effort so far..........

Posted by: wendel2 | February 5, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

Wow, the defense is looking ugly tonight. The Caps seem to be very casual about things tonight, why don't they play like they did against the Devils?

Posted by: isaacc7 | February 5, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

sigh..

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse

The Kings are exploiting to a larger degree what the Devils were trying to do last night, and that's hitting those long passes up the center of the ice. The Devils started doing that, but L.A. has really taken advantage of the room. The Caps play an aggressive offensive game and oftentimes pinch in deep. The Kings are just passing it by those guys. The issue is exacerbated on the PP.

And tonight again these guys are taking careless, stupid penalities. It's games like these that really give me pause about this team because you just can't take games off. Boston doesn't. San Jose doesn't. If you beat those guys, you earn the victory. The Caps still have to sharpen their play mentally and stay involved in games no matter who they're playing. I mean, facing two 5-on-3 PPs is inexcusable. You just can't do that.

Posted by: CDon | February 5, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

ouch laich.

you are a trooper.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:24 PM | Report abuse

Oh, and someone finally told a team that Theo is beatable up top. He always drops early, so it's easy to shovel the puck above him for goals.

Posted by: CDon | February 5, 2009 8:25 PM | Report abuse

great PK.

now lets roll with it.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

5 breakaways is a joke bb must be fuming

Posted by: wendel2 | February 5, 2009 8:26 PM | Report abuse

I don't like the Caps right now. They don't hassle. No pressure at all. I have the impression they think they're so much better than the Kings... yet they're losing.

Posted by: mauree | February 5, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Needless to say, that PK was essential.
C'mon boys, let's turn this thing around!

Posted by: Terptwin | February 5, 2009 8:27 PM | Report abuse

Once again another NO SHOW vs. a team below them in the standing. If, this trend continues this team is going to be awful down the stretch....all those games vs. FLA. TB, ATL, CAR.....

Posted by: 555Mass | February 5, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

i don't think they think they are better than the kings. they are just straight up getting beat by the kings. again.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:28 PM | Report abuse

we can handle our division. this idea of playing up/down to your opponent is weird to me. we are just getting beat by the Kings system again and taking bad penalties.

BRING THE ENERGY BRADLEY.

Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:40 PM | Report abuse

well, THAT was a crappy period. I wish we could play great teams every night, that'd be nice... and we've been in the penalty box for half this game.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 5, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I feel like I've seen nothing but three white jerseys to every one red. This is ridiculous.

Posted by: mattbuckley80 | February 5, 2009 8:42 PM | Report abuse

I know we should give the boys a break since they've been playing well and all... but shees, it's so stressful to watch them being outplayed, out hassled, out shot and actually losing the game to a weaker team.

Posted by: mauree | February 5, 2009 8:46 PM | Report abuse

The Kings look like the Caps usually do...and the Caps look like a slow Patrick Division team.

The Kings are almost as good as the Playstation NHL game from 1993 Gretzky, Robitaille and Granato tonight. With Blake on D making everyone bleed

The Caps looked slow and lackadaisical in the first two periods, and it seemed like it was because they thought they were better than the Kings. The Caps have played down to competition too much this season. Seems to be endemic of all D.C.-based sports team.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 5, 2009 9:15 PM | Report abuse

Nice goal and great pressure. But another lapse in the defensive zone leads to an Erskine hook and puts the Caps on the PK yet again. Not so good. Seems like the Caps are due for a shortie after the past couple of games.

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 5, 2009 9:25 PM | Report abuse

That was a terrible game. I still wonder why the Caps overlook these teams. Is it the coach, lack of leadership? What?

Posted by: isaacc7 | February 5, 2009 9:27 PM | Report abuse

Yep, only one defenseman out there. Bad decision at this point in the game. But really, it's on the players for having zero intensity in the first two periods of the game. This was as sad an effort as I've seen this season. Can't lose games like this at home.

Losses against teams below them in the standings make you wonder how they'll play against the lesser teams in their division and if they can maintain a mental edge in a 7-game series in the playoffs. Still have some things to work on.

Posted by: CDon | February 5, 2009 9:28 PM | Report abuse

Look it is what it is...too free-wheeling early and gave up some breakaways. Even cup contenders have poor periods, the Wings dropped 5 in a row recently. I like to see the fight we showed they just need to seem to be reminded at times how dominant they can be when they

Posted by: rachel216 | February 5, 2009 9:30 PM | Report abuse

The Caps always have fight in them. I never question the effort, really. Just the style of play. The Caps aren't toast, obviously. They're a legit contender for a deep playoff run. But I just don't like the lapses in judgment they show against lesser teams. But they're young, and they'll learn.

Posted by: rachel216 | February 5, 2009 9:34 PM | Report abuse

It's frustrating when you watch two lazy periods of hockey then one period that demonstrates how well they can play. Makes you wonder why they can't exert that effort all game.

Posted by: CDon | February 5, 2009 9:35 PM | Report abuse

Why couldn't that effort occur in the first 40 minutes? ERRRRRRRRRRRR

Posted by: ejohnsto | February 5, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

caps were lazy in first and second period and that's what cost them the game.. this is partically frustrating because you're always saying if only...i only that 5 goal didn't go in...

Posted by: rachel216 | February 5, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

I'll take the effort. We put ourselves behind the 8 ball and didn't get lucky bounces like Pitt did last night to get back in it. It's a good wake up call to show you can't get complacent...it's pretty obvious when they put in the effort they can take over games, the lesson just needs to stick.

Have to saddle up for Florida on Saturday. It can't be said we don't have heart.

Posted by: Davethecapsfan | February 5, 2009 9:36 PM | Report abuse

aww man were now 21-4-1 on home ice, here come the boobirds

Posted by: ludeman95 | February 5, 2009 9:37 PM | Report abuse

Back from HH here!

We played desperate hockey in the last few minutes I was able to see. Based on the posts about the game leading up to the loss I gotta think the last few minutes should not make up for losing to this team at home: BB should be upset cause you guys sure seem to have been all game!

Posted by: austinsteve | February 5, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse

No luck tonight, but the Caps learned a lesson tonight, but most importantly, showed what a team with their backs against the wall can do. The last period was a picture of what this team can do when it wants to. Flying around the rink, creating chances, putting the puck on goal, I am impressed with the effort and skill exhibited over the final 20. LA's goal was a product of the Caps finishing checks, and without the play of a superstar in net, the final 20 minutes could have lead to 5 goals.

3 pt bruins game in progress, not good...

Posted by: austinsteve | February 5, 2009 9:39 PM | Report abuse

I was at the game for the first half, but had to leave to get to work for a late-night OC12 turn-up. By the time I left, we were down 4-2. We managed to pull back to a 5-4 loss, but I agree that the team was not playing well while I was at the game. It sounded like they finally got it together in the last third, but what it looked like to me was they were doing all sorts of fancy stuff to try and get Ovechkin his 200th NHL goal, and not shooting the puck, losing control of the puck, losing control of the breakaway. Like Dave says above, it is what it is. The Kings got several breakaways, and that short-handed goal ought never to have happened. But, it did. Now we need to move on.

We have another game on Saturday.

Posted by: irockthered | February 5, 2009 9:40 PM | Report abuse

IF ONLY THAT 5th GOAL DIDN'T GO IN, this is the angriest I've been after a game...exactly CDON, where was that in the 1st and 2nd??? It's always too little too late, and what's up with all these okay goalies playing so well against the Caps... Caps had so many opportunities in the 3rd, Quick was great on a few but it looked a lot like the Caps were just not capitalizing, they had great chances and just couldn't finish, at the end it's just us missing the net, if Laich elevates that puck we're heading to overtime... if this is how they play vs below average teams, we'll be in a bad shock as Bruce always says. They have that mentality that they can just show up and play at 50% and they'll win, and then they find out their opponent is actually very capable of beating them.

the idea of us not being cup contenders is weird. the regular season and the playoffs are two worlds apart. we are 2-0-1 with boston, does that mean we should walk over them in the playoffs?

I don't think you can blame Theo tonight. I'm all for "making the big save when we need it" but when you give up that many breakaways and multiple chances right in front of the net stuff is going to go in unless you're Hasek-good or lucky.

We didn't get the Kings to put 2 pucks in their own net like the Pens did with Tampa last night so they can hail Malkin as the guy who took over that game instead of the ref who stopped that clear and whichever donkey it was that tried to shove the puck under Mckenna late.

Rebound Saturday, nothing cures a loss like this like a 6-1 win.

It seriously looked to me like the Kings found Theodore's number. Just look at the shot totals:

1st period: 11/12 = SV% .916
2nd period: 15/18 = SV% .833
3rd period: 4/5 = SV% .800

Quick, on the other hand:

1st period: 8/9 = SV% .888
2nd period: 13/14 = SV% .928
3rd period: 20/22 = SV% .909

What killed us otherwise was that 5-on-3 that the delay of game penalty in the 1st frame cost us, and the short-handed goal they got in the 2nd frame. In both cases, it's sloppy play.

Without those two goals, it's a 4-3 win for the Caps. We put 22 freakin' shots on the goal in the last frame, and only two went in? That's Quick standing on his head.

I'm more bummed than mad right now... But we'll get past this. We're the Capitals.

How many teams have won the Cup by taking the 4th most penalties in the league and having the 7th worst penalty kill in the league? I'm willing to bet that it's a pretty short list. If Boudreau can't beat that tendency out of them pretty soon it's one and done.

This is just lousy efforts by the young defensemen (Green and Morrison in particular) to let the Kings gain confidence from the beginning. It appears that the Capitals never do well when they score fast because it seems to give them a false sense of invincibility and start playing a more open game. I don't know how many times the Kings were able to send a man behind the defense with long passes all because the defensemen on the Capitals were too caught up with trying to score. Play your position and let the forwards and centers do their thing! Stop getting caught out of position and thus committing stupid penalties trying to make up for your mistake! We have plenty of offensive threat on offense already! Green's goals are just a luxury, not a necessity! God, this infuriates me so much watching the Kings do this to us again! I hope the next time we see that lousy team is in the Stanley Cup, and even then I would still not like our chances if we continue to play this sloppy!

Just came back from the game....

Good job not quitting; in fact, everyone was standing in the main halls watching the monitors with a few seconds to go... but

1. Eric Fehr is not a top line forward. I dont know why he was playing with Ovechkin.
2. Mike Green needs to work on playing defense.
3. Ditto John Erskine, though he's not as bad as the last 2.
4. Speaking of, I cannot wait until we get rid of 26, Shaone Morrison and have Karl Alzner up full time. Ever since arbitration, he's brought nothing to the team. Ditto tonight.
5. Last but not least, is Jeff Schultz. Can ANYONE please explain to me why he is on the roster? He does not score. He does not hit. He does not move the puck well. He does not play defense well. He is absolutely worthless, awkward and, to quote a guy in my section, needs to "Stop being a ****ing wimp."

The coaching staff knew this could be a let down game, and should have practiced yesterday. It showed tonight.

I love these fans who scream armageddon after a loss; I really get a kick out of it.

It's probably the same fans who left the game after it was 5-3.

We'll be fine, it was just an off-game.
