Offensive zone penalties by Steckel in consecutive games = scratch next game.
What a stupid way to end up with a 5 on 3 penalty kill - and a goal against - offensive zone trip followed by puck over the glass for a delay of game.
Posted by: rw-c | February 5, 2009 7:46 PM | Report abuse
It reminds me of the blow out start against the sens, followed by a terrible remainder. this time they don't have that huge cushion...just the relaxed attitude after the early goal!
This show why they have to pick up a gritty leader type that takes no prisoners.

Posted by: wendel2 | February 5, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse
Wow, the defense is looking ugly tonight. The Caps seem to be very casual about things tonight, why don't they play like they did against the Devils?
Posted by: isaacc7 | February 5, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse
sigh..
Posted by: richmondphil | February 5, 2009 8:19 PM | Report abuse
The Kings are exploiting to a larger degree what the Devils were trying to do last night, and that's hitting those long passes up the center of the ice. The Devils started doing that, but L.A. has really taken advantage of the room. The Caps play an aggressive offensive game and oftentimes pinch in deep. The Kings are just passing it by those guys. The issue is exacerbated on the PP.
And tonight again these guys are taking careless, stupid penalities. It's games like these that really give me pause about this team because you just can't take games off. Boston doesn't. San Jose doesn't. If you beat those guys, you earn the victory. The Caps still have to sharpen their play mentally and stay involved in games no matter who they're playing. I mean, facing two 5-on-3 PPs is inexcusable. You just can't do that.

Yep, only one defenseman out there. Bad decision at this point in the game. But really, it's on the players for having zero intensity in the first two periods of the game. This was as sad an effort as I've seen this season. Can't lose games like this at home.
Losses against teams below them in the standings make you wonder how they'll play against the lesser teams in their division and if they can maintain a mental edge in a 7-game series in the playoffs. Still have some things to work on.

I'll take the effort. We put ourselves behind the 8 ball and didn't get lucky bounces like Pitt did last night to get back in it. It's a good wake up call to show you can't get complacent...it's pretty obvious when they put in the effort they can take over games, the lesson just needs to stick.

We played desperate hockey in the last few minutes I was able to see. Based on the posts about the game leading up to the loss I gotta think the last few minutes should not make up for losing to this team at home: BB should be upset cause you guys sure seem to have been all game!
Posted by: austinsteve | February 5, 2009 9:38 PM | Report abuse
No luck tonight, but the Caps learned a lesson tonight, but most importantly, showed what a team with their backs against the wall can do. The last period was a picture of what this team can do when it wants to. Flying around the rink, creating chances, putting the puck on goal, I am impressed with the effort and skill exhibited over the final 20. LA's goal was a product of the Caps finishing checks, and without the play of a superstar in net, the final 20 minutes could have lead to 5 goals.

I was at the game for the first half, but had to leave to get to work for a late-night OC12 turn-up. By the time I left, we were down 4-2. We managed to pull back to a 5-4 loss, but I agree that the team was not playing well while I was at the game. It sounded like they finally got it together in the last third, but what it looked like to me was they were doing all sorts of fancy stuff to try and get Ovechkin his 200th NHL goal, and not shooting the puck, losing control of the puck, losing control of the breakaway. Like Dave says above, it is what it is. The Kings got several breakaways, and that short-handed goal ought never to have happened. But, it did. Now we need to move on.
We have another game on Saturday.

IF ONLY THAT 5th GOAL DIDN'T GO IN, this is the angriest I've been after a game...exactly CDON, where was that in the 1st and 2nd??? It's always too little too late, and what's up with all these okay goalies playing so well against the Caps... Caps had so many opportunities in the 3rd, Quick was great on a few but it looked a lot like the Caps were just not capitalizing, they had great chances and just couldn't finish, at the end it's just us missing the net, if Laich elevates that puck we're heading to overtime... if this is how they play vs below average teams, we'll be in a bad shock as Bruce always says. They have that mentality that they can just show up and play at 50% and they'll win, and then they find out their opponent is actually very capable of beating them.

I don't think you can blame Theo tonight. I'm all for "making the big save when we need it" but when you give up that many breakaways and multiple chances right in front of the net stuff is going to go in unless you're Hasek-good or lucky.
We didn't get the Kings to put 2 pucks in their own net like the Pens did with Tampa last night so they can hail Malkin as the guy who took over that game instead of the ref who stopped that clear and whichever donkey it was that tried to shove the puck under Mckenna late.
Rebound Saturday, nothing cures a loss like this like a 6-1 win.

It seriously looked to me like the Kings found Theodore's number. Just look at the shot totals:
1st period: 11/12 = SV% .916
2nd period: 15/18 = SV% .833
3rd period: 4/5 = SV% .800
Quick, on the other hand:
1st period: 8/9 = SV% .888
2nd period: 13/14 = SV% .928
3rd period: 20/22 = SV% .909
What killed us otherwise was that 5-on-3 that the delay of game penalty in the 1st frame cost us, and the short-handed goal they got in the 2nd frame. In both cases, it's sloppy play.
Without those two goals, it's a 4-3 win for the Caps. We put 22 freakin' shots on the goal in the last frame, and only two went in? That's Quick standing on his head.
I'm more bummed than mad right now... But we'll get past this. We're the Capitals.

How many teams have won the Cup by taking the 4th most penalties in the league and having the 7th worst penalty kill in the league? I'm willing to bet that it's a pretty short list. If Boudreau can't beat that tendency out of them pretty soon it's one and done.

This is just lousy efforts by the young defensemen (Green and Morrison in particular) to let the Kings gain confidence from the beginning. It appears that the Capitals never do well when they score fast because it seems to give them a false sense of invincibility and start playing a more open game. I don't know how many times the Kings were able to send a man behind the defense with long passes all because the defensemen on the Capitals were too caught up with trying to score. Play your position and let the forwards and centers do their thing! Stop getting caught out of position and thus committing stupid penalties trying to make up for your mistake! We have plenty of offensive threat on offense already! Green's goals are just a luxury, not a necessity! God, this infuriates me so much watching the Kings do this to us again! I hope the next time we see that lousy team is in the Stanley Cup, and even then I would still not like our chances if we continue to play this sloppy!

Just came back from the game....
Good job not quitting; in fact, everyone was standing in the main halls watching the monitors with a few seconds to go... but
1. Eric Fehr is not a top line forward. I dont know why he was playing with Ovechkin.
2. Mike Green needs to work on playing defense.
3. Ditto John Erskine, though he's not as bad as the last 2.
4. Speaking of, I cannot wait until we get rid of 26, Shaone Morrison and have Karl Alzner up full time. Ever since arbitration, he's brought nothing to the team. Ditto tonight.
5. Last but not least, is Jeff Schultz. Can ANYONE please explain to me why he is on the roster? He does not score. He does not hit. He does not move the puck well. He does not play defense well. He is absolutely worthless, awkward and, to quote a guy in my section, needs to "Stop being a ****ing wimp."
The coaching staff knew this could be a let down game, and should have practiced yesterday. It showed tonight.

I love these fans who scream armageddon after a loss; I really get a kick out of it.
It's probably the same fans who left the game after it was 5-3.
We'll be fine, it was just an off-game.
