Tonight's Lineup
As you may have seen, Sergei Fedorov, Shaone Morrisonn and Viktor Kozlov are out tonight for the Caps. Brent Johnson will make his fourth straight start and oppose some guy name Olie. Coach Bruce Boudreau said there were no changes to the lineup, so it should look like this:
Forwards
Ovechkin-Backstrom-Semin
Fleischmann-Nylander-Clark
Laich-Steckel-Fehr
Brashear-Gordon-Bradley
Defense
Schultz-Green
Poti-Sloan
Erskine-Jurcina
Before the game Boudreau, said that Morrisonn (groin) skated on his own this morning and continues to improve. The outlook for Fedorov (undisclosed) didn't sound as promising. Boudreau said he hasn't skated and I haven't seen him since he limped off the ice against Carolina.
Be sure to check back after the game for some notes and quotes.

Don't like the idea of playing a video tribute to Kolzig before the game, just to make him inspired. Well I guess it's no surprise. If it's not a video tribute to cheer the opponent the stadium will just allow opponent fans to watch the game.
Can somebody tell me what the hell is wrong with Kozlov? Again!!!
Hopefully Feds didn't sprain his ankle. That's bad news and will take forever to heal on him.

No changes from what lineup? the practice lineup? or the Rangers lineup? Kozlov out Clark in is a change-and not a good one. I getting a little suspect of the orange jersey.

+1 for the good guys.
They are really flying out there. Caps need to clear their zone better. Green and Jurnica are pretty weak on the clear.

I also laughed at Emmy's move to Philthy and TB and the Caps getting a first rounder. I love that move. Now I also hoped that the Caps had kept Ollie and not taken Jose. Not so sure now. Not crazy about JT, but OK does not look very hot tonight. BJ looks awesome holding the Caps in the game early when TB got the first 3-4 shots.

just got in. not a smart move by melrose 2 send in the goalie the opposing team has been practicing against for years. olie enterred the game w/ something like a .914 sv % which is quite good. guess tonight sends that down the drain.

tell me again why we need him and clark
Posted by: wendel2 | November 10, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse
This is worrying me, Ovechkin looks like he has lost all his skills, whenever he's got a good scoring chance it looks like he's trying to do too much instead of just shooting it.. his offensive skills look like Donald Brashear's offensive skills. He just looks so ordinary now, he doesn't look like an NHL MVP. When will his goal scoring drought end? He'll have like 15 goals at this pace. :( Is anyone else worried? I mean we need him to go far in the playoffs, I just wished he looked more like the way he did last year.
Posted by: rachel216 | November 10, 2008 8:48 PM | Report abuse
They better have a better 3rd period then the 2nd. Bolts were comming on some. 18 shots in the second period for the bolts. Go CAPS ROCK THE RED!
Posted by: Capsfannmiss | November 10, 2008 8:50 PM | Report abuse
whoa, it's one bad period, and Johnson stopped 17/18 in the period on top of that. OV will get his goals when the dam breaks, he will get his in bunches, that's his history. The Caps will regroup for the 3rd
Posted by: JIMALLCAPS | November 10, 2008 8:51 PM | Report abuse
rachel, Jim,
Exactly. Ovie does looks abit pedestrian but it is just one period. He is off his pace but unlike last year, he does not have to win each game single handidly at this point in the season.
Bunches or not, they'll come. Besides, the Caps are on the winning side of the issues so I don't think Ovie's too concerned as long as we keep winning.
Posted by: BernieWolfeFan | November 10, 2008 9:04 PM | Report abuse
He carried a large load on his shoulders for a couple years. He is allowed a scoring drought for the time being.

Johhhh-naaaay!
Whipped the 'Nings' ASS!
I knew he had it in him.
His body remembers how it was keeping goal back in 2001. When that guy has confidence, suckas better watch out.
And FINALLY for Ovie...wtf. He gets a goal when it doesn't even matter anymore. That dude needs to find his clutch game. All that money he makes. Christ. But I love him.
Last word out of me for the night: I'm glad it's Barry Melrose and not Gabby that's trying to squeeze W's out of olie kolzig anymore. He is ridiculous for thinking that he could show this team up. I'm just sad that chomp didn't get pulled. Melrose is hating that Olie has to play every game we play against them this season according to his contract.
Posted by: large23220 | November 10, 2008 9:46 PM | Report abuse
Nice game, Caps were picking the Lightning apart most of the game and late TB was trying to save face. Johnny is my number one goalie now... I wonder if BB and GMGM will make it official?
Nice to see Olie, better to get the points.
Did anybody notice we're leading the division again!?
Posted by: TheCapitalist1 | November 10, 2008 10:15 PM | Report abuse
those first three goals were a thing of beauty, the holy grail of hockey, tic, tac, toe, and into the net. not a goalie in the NHL stops one of those goals, problem is when we get that kind of goal, we forget that most of the goals we score aren't that pretty, in fact when our passes get picked off we get like 6 shots on goal (please see period 2). personally I would rather see ugly goals. great game from johnny again!

Just getting back. For what it's worth:
I think Boudreau said something in the post-game about easing off the throttle (my words), and I couldn't agree more. I felt a lot more comfortable after 2 periods against the Rangers than I did against the 'Ning. Put the foot on their necks and keep it on them.
Can someone misplace and shred that contract extension to Erskine? Hooray he got an assist and all, but when you lose the puck in your own end to a forechecking Gary Roberts, who's older than dirt...just saying. On the flip side, that Sloan/Poti pairing is working out well, Poti's got 2g 1a and a +6 in his last 3 games.
Kolzig's comments in the last post on Semin and OV couldn't be more ominous. Semin saw a little more pressure, which opened things up for OV (I thought).
Overall, here's hoping the goals start flowing and improved consistency before the road trip. Night all.
Posted by: Section117 | November 10, 2008 11:28 PM | Report abuse
I'm not sure that the Caps didn't deliberately back off in the second and third, honestly. There was no reason to humiliate Olie, and utterly humiliated he would have been if the Caps had kept going full throttle. True that the second looked nasty, but the third looked rather better -- it looked like they were doing just enough to hold the lead. They wanted to win, not to crush Kolzig. There was no point to crushing him.
Posted by: kittypawz | November 10, 2008 11:49 PM | Report abuse
Well that was fun - bittersweet, but fun. I was proud to be a Caps fan when Olie was received with cheers and O-LIE chants, but disappointed towards the end when he was mocked with OOOOOOO-LIE chants. Was that really necessary? I mean please (at least it didn't last long). Anyway, glad to see Johnny is still strong - I will be curious to see who gets the next two starts. And Ovie FINALLY scored ... pfew! Hopefully that will be the beginning of a looong streak.
Steve:
Loved the picture of Poti. Ya know, he has been playing like a younger man lately ...
Leeguru:
Regarding Jagr, something was missing without him at the Rangers game the other night. While I never boo him, it was not the same without hearing the boos!! ;-) (Briere, on the other hand, I happily boo ...).

Boo-
I agree with you. One of the guys around me started with the mocking Olie chants at the end... if looks could kill, he was a dead man. No class. I thought it was completely uncalled for.
